You can have both. This idea that one must choose between fitness/good diet/misery OR happiness/unhealthiness is a copout for at least half of the people saying this. If you're physically or mentally handicapped, by all means this is not directed at you. If you are able bodied and tell yourself this feel-good lie that is parroted constantly, then this is for you.

So true. It was not until I started watching this channel and watched a man who pulls twelve hour days and runs his own business maintain a healthy and functional body that I realized it was possible. Thank you Louis for showing me that being obese and unhealthy was a choice and I had the power to change it. Using you as a source of inspiration I was able to lose and keep off 120lbs and I have never felt or performed better in life. I hope you always share your wisdom and continue to make the world a better place.

I cannot believe that I am commenting on a 6 year old video but holy crap! The amount of true understanding of the human mind, the wisdom, the knowledge, it just blows me away. One day I hope to have the honor of crossing paths with you to explain the background that allows me to just comprehend what you actually have to say. Words that I have perhaps known, perhaps even was taught, and that I may even dare to attribute to some combination of experience and teaching, but as I hear the depth and level of understanding that is coming out of your mouth I truly feel humbled and just watch with awe. The drive that makes me want to comment is knowing your field of work, your formal education and then hearing your words about totally unrelated issues, ones that even the most privileged experts in that respective field might parrot, but would lack even the most rudimentary understanding and depth that you arrive at completely on your own! As I look at this comment and how nonsensical it seems all I can say is 1) words have literally failed me 2) I really hope that when you talk about the experts or the engineers or whoever it is you perceive would have more knowledge on the matter, you do it as a matter of public courtesy and not actually believe this. As a person who has had the privilege of being formally taught by some of those "experts", I can tell you that even in this matter (human health/how it relates to human behavior) what you are casually "ranting" about in 2017, is currently considered a ground-breaking and very popular field of research by some of the most prestigious PhD programs in the world. I know this first hand because as I was shifting away for that field, inspired by watching you and others find meaning in your jobs, it was very disheartening, tempting and annoying that suddenly everybody was hiring researchers in something I had finally given up on after 6 years and a growing family that put financial pressure on me to stop waiting. I realize you probably won't even see this comment, on the off chance you do, I just want to reiterate what I always try to say, trust yourself, this is not some weak-ass, generic, positive image, pathetic nonsense that I would be saying to anybody. I mean trust Louis because what he says is so unbelievably insightful that I can tell by everything you are conveying that you do not at some level. You may believe in it, you may know it in your "heart of hearts" but I swear to you that even in your darkest hours, as you sit there angrily drinking on camera and spewing whatever thought pops into your head, the content of it is so unbelievably insightful that I can assure you even the most expert of experts could stand to learn from it. Do not let all this flashy crap of fancy degrees or "decades of experience" or whatever people hide behind cloud your judgment or make you doubt yourself. It is all garbage. I hope to one day have the honor to actually show you this, my bigger hope is that you kinda already know this but sometimes let it happen lol, but I promise you that most people are idiots. This includes billionaires, hotshot ceos, incredibly educated "intellectuals" and so on. I do not know many of the first two categories, but I do know a lot of people in academia, and as sophisticated and educated they may be, they are merely consumers of large amounts of data, they are not people who necessarily know how to "think" like you do. As a matter of fact, it sadly is the reason they are drawn to academia (IMHO). This has gotten too long and keeps getting more confusing so ill stop.

That said I really agree with your comment. I also think that this type of videos are very insightful and advice that could even be life-changing. I can't help but feel that the ideas in his rant videos hold some type of maturity/ insight in this world that I strive to have one day. This video in particular is about the life principle of not lying to one's own self and that the willingness of improving one's self is virtue, which is deeply meaningful.

I think body positivity is just a reaction to the continous harassment and mocking fat people take. people are wired differently, some lift weights to relieve stress, some eat, some snort drugs, some gamble. if someone has an addiction to food, is it right to harass or mock them? also, if someone is just slightly overweight, is it right to push them to lose weight to fit some fashion stereotype? fat people need some relief and that's why the body positivity movement started. of course it's not healthy to be proud to be morbidly obese, but maybe it's better to be morbidly obese and somewhat at peace with that, than to be morbidly obese and think daily that you're unworthy of living because of the continuous negative reinforcement and lack of true, compassionate help (and not bullying masquerading as "help") you get from society.

I went Vegan 7 years ago this month.
    Two things happened:
    1) I healthfully lost about 50 lbs and kept it off; I've never felt or looked better.
    2) People close to me (family, friends, and co-workers) systematically and almost uniformly, at one point or another, criticized my eating habits, my lifestyle choices, and many even attempted to shame me for "wasting away to nothing" (I'm 6'0", 170lbs).
I truly wish more people had attitudes like yours towards self-improvement, especially self improvement when it comes to being out of shape, because this world just seems more and more okay with being out of shape, being resigned to it, and even celebrating it.

This video of Louis reminds me of myself in high-school. I was a computer science nerd, but also a nutrition and gym nerd and I started to volunteer myself training people in our weight room. Those shy nerd kids( the self conscious ones that wouldn't change for gym) loved me. I wasnt big or intimidating so they wer comfortable taking my advice becuase they could relate to me. I didn't care about working out with jocks, i wanted to help people who wer afraid to start helping themselves becuase of what others around them might think. Being positive with all body types and focusing on where your starting from is way more important then people think. Everyone tells themselves "I'm out of shape or I'm weak people will make fun of me" get that out of your head, any kind of effort in bettering yourself is Positive no matter where you start from, you got to start somewhere.
Iv fallen off the wagon but seeing this video reminds me of how I once was. I'm signing up to a rock climbing gym now! :D

I have been struggling with health for the past years, yet the latter four, five with this year, I have been doing calisthenics, body weight training, reading, trying to improve myself! Right when I though I was going to be back on the road to relapse, I find this video, with you explaining with eloquence the issues of most importance in almost everyone's life. I knew about attracting people with the same... frequency about them, though now I completely understood it. Thank you very much for sharing your thoughts on the matter! Your way of speaking, the cadence, the way you actually are is the most adequate for - I would like it to be that way - everyone's understanding! Thank you again!

Some people pay a fitness center more than twice that a month. In this case, I paid myself.
To be completely honest, there was another reason: given a pack for Christmas. I wanted to try out on longer distances (more than 5k). It's fantastic (though the straps bled dye into my shirt).

      @dpwellman 7 років тому +11

Heh. I _used_ to have knee problems. Then I started running: no more problems. Anecdotal? Sure; but I submit it's entirely untrue running has a detrimental effect on joints-- quite the opposite. I further submit 99.999% of injury risks during long distance are fatigue related.
But no one has to even _run_ the entire distance. Walking three miles has nearly the same benefit as running three miles.
One more anecdote: Two years ago, I got beat by a 68 year old man on an 8K course, by just over four minutes. He finished in 33:50. A 74 year old ran the 5K course in under 20 minutes.

Bit late, but damn do I relate on that crappy food vs good food. I was raised on trash, and it's a hard habit to break, man. We're all gonna make it, though.
Also, holy shit about the height thing. As a dude who's also short (5'4", woo), it's hilarious to watch the absurd hypocrisy. 10/10.

I really enjoyed watching this video for various reasons
When I was a kid and had to undergo physical therapy for over a year -- I realized as an adult I was more fit at the age of 8 than I was at 18; that's when I started exercising and running.
I have "exercise bulimia" according to my doctor; where I feel as though I need to exercise after eating a meal to burn off the food. Unfortunately, the issue is I also have many medical problems that require me to exercise each day in order to help with pain -- it's become both a healthy and unhealthy addiction to run as much as I do.
I'm very happy with where I am currently, so I do my best not to makes any more "gains" but more to "stay where I am" on a fitness level -- eating healthily and exercising for 60 minutes a day keeps me satisfied; but on days where I take breaks I always feel guilty due to that "exercise bulimia " I have.
On another note I totally agree with everything you said regarding self improvement and what people want and strive for -- I know quite a few people that are not in great positions in life physically, mentally or socially, but are still striving to become better in a healthy way -- it's something I greatly admire and what keeps me motivated, seeing other people work so hard to attain what they strive for makes me say "If they can do it, I can too"
I'm disabled but I still do my best with what little I can do -- it makes me a bit angry when I see people who are capable of so much more than I am, do nothing with their life.

Most of the people I know who are into body positivity use it in essentially the kind of way you respect. It's not supposed to be so much about saying "I'm perfect the way I am, so I don't need to eat right and exercise" as much as it is about stopping destructive patterns of binge dieting and eating that come from hating your body and how it looks. In order to become healthier, one has to learn to love their body. If you love your body, then it becomes a lot more difficult to treat it wrong. If you love your body, you listen to it. If you can love your body, you can start to cook it food that doesn't come with directions on the package. If you love your body, you can start to explore how good it feels to use it and move it the way it is meant to.
If you love something, you are more likely to put in work making it better. If you hate it, you are more likely to put in work making excuses.
Now, there are also a lot of people out there using body positivty as an excuse and unneeded ego boost. They are generally assholes. Unfortunately, assholes tend to be so loud and self absorbed that they drown out the voices of reason. That doesn't mean that they are the majority.

I used to help family withoutdoor stuff a good bit while i was in colege, looking for work. I finally found a job in I.T and am going on for a BS degree. Last semester I did windows server 2012R2 class and statistics which was a bit of a challenge itself going from 2008 to 2012R2. I managed to do okay in both, but between that and work it seemed I was lucky if I had an hour for anything else. I had originally planned to do 2 classes again, but due to technical issues and the teacher basically telling me they couldn't help solve the issue I decided it was better off to just drop the class.
In a way I feel like I may end up with extra time and regret it, but it beats doing two classes 1/2 way and then dealing with all the scheduling crap. Or passing one and failing the other and blowing like $1200. I sort of think even later if I can do 2 classes i'm not sure I would want to. I almost think even if adds another year it may be better just take my time but do good. Then I don't have to constantly be figuring out how to cram stuff in so I get it done on time. Pressure like all the time for a semester gets kind of old. Then add on the occasional odd off hour/overtime I.T stuff.
My main co-worker I guess has always been into sports, etc. We have free access to a gym on site and I thought it's here atleast over time I didn't have classes I would try some weights, etc. Mostly working on areas I know are weak or would be cool just to do. Some stuff like situps I can barely do and one day getting out from under a desk working on a PC I just thought if I could do a situp this stuff would be a bit simpler. At some point me and my coworker may have a foot race. I sort of think it's pathetic, but sometimes i'll climb like 4 stories of stairs towards the end my legs start to feel a bit tired. If you don't use I guess you loose. We usually walk around a lot though doing helpdesk stuff, etc. I guess there are better things to do too.

Recently I moved from my parents and I am now faced with cooking for myself. Due to this I have read about healthy eating and I think there is one issue with this topic:
You do not really know what is true.
There are many gurus, dieticians etc. out there with many different ideas about proper nutrition(Low carb high fat boom/keto, paleo, veganism etc.) which often aim for different macronutrient-ratios and ban different food groups. This makes eating correct a lot harder because you do not know whats right and you do not arrive to a conclusion
    For example:
    Is saturated fat really bad?
    Which oils are healthy/unhealthy?
    Are eggs healthy/unhealthy?
    Is proccessed/red meat bad?
How much meat should you eat?
    Is every fish healthy?
    How about carbs?
Are (a lot of) fruits(=fructose) really healthy? Whats unhealthier - fructose vs glucose?
    ...

The chair might be controled by pushing the knob that you use for lowering and increasing the height, but insead of pulling it try to move it in left or right while sitting straight.
A bit difficult to explain, just straighten up the chair dont lean on it at all and try to push on the knob into the chair or pull it out only trying to make it move horizontally. Thats usually the blocking mechanism for those kind of chairs.
