Bullying is a serious problem, particularly for people in our field. The group of people labeled nerds are more likely to enter the tech field, and also more likely to be bullied through their youth.
Here I go through some bad advice I hear given and my experience with it. I go over the beginning of certain bullying experiences and the end of it, and how I felt about the decisions I made every step of the way.
As a kid I was in terrible shape and in terrible health. At 26 I still have health issues I don't publicly disclose but I am no longer 5'6" 97 pounds. I am 150 and can easily outrun many sprinters and benchpress 100 pounds over my weight with ease. I do not have to worry about the issues now that I did when I was younger, and realize how even I was agreeing with some of the crap advice I hear being given to youths. This advice is usually parroted ad nausea by adults that forget what it is like to be a kid.

i understand ur point but no matter how bigger that bully is it only takes one punch in the right place- chances are creating a scene ( punching the fucker) will only show everyone he's dominance is in question, so to stay looking like a hardman he'll back off.

Growing up I was told the same thing.
Well After two years of my clothing being stolen from my 'locked' locker, hit and kicked, I fought back.
1. I got my ass handed to me on a stone platter. I ended up needing stitches.
2. I got my ass beat at home by the same person who told me that advice.
3. I got suspended and ticketed, he did too, but his parents bailed him out for the 90th time.
That advice is bull crap.
Personally, flipped my first bully over my back down a small hill, he was stunned but didnt fuck with me for 4 years
My second, I made him turn blue in the face choking him when his friends couldn't pull me off, when I told him the only reason I stopped is I don't want to go to jail, there was number 2 gone for good
number 1 came back later, but we are in shop class when he decided to start a fight. some of my friends confront him and he gets on my ass a day later and I just flatly asked him did he never notice the icepick in my hand? to scribe in the metal instead of a special tool, we had ice picks. telling him that I let him live after what would have been justifiable self defense considering what he did and where he did it, the way is face went white made it all worthwhile.
as for highschool being the best time of your life... for most people it likely is. they can do nearly anything without lasting consequences, are around their friends all day, and never have to worry about how they will pay their bills at the end of the month because their car broke down and that cost FAR more than they had saved up. I consider myself lucky to say high school was a mixed bag for me, and I'm happier now than I was back then, but most of my friends cant say the same thing, life dicked them hard.
Judo has been my savior when I was a younger high-school boy (a _defensive_ martial art). What's "nice" wih judo, is that the more an aggressor is big and strong, the more it becomes effective against him lol (using the opponent's own inertia force is what Judo is almost all about; more complete than jujitsu, it can be a really effective defensive technique even against karate kids)... There's a way to grab an offender's fist and arm while he's throwing a punch, rotate and throw him on the ground with a hip movement, then use a locking judo flip to immobilize him on the ground until he tires out in trying to free himself, and make him promise whatever your heart's out (in my case it was for him to stop bullying other people and my friends at school, which he did). Apart from my aggressor's over-sized and machiavellian bullying ego, nobody got hurt not even a scratch, but from then on it was a real game changer, and that was really satisfying! To any parent out there, if you feel that your kid is being bullied around, make him/her a favor and give him Judo (it's also fun).

Nowadays nobody really bullies, at least in the school I go to. The weird kids get cancelled out and the scrawny white and small kids get respect from the popular kids. The weird kids being bullies, people that get mad easily, people who bring their ds to school, and Elmo’s/goths.

schools literally do nothing until the victim defends themselves. Even after the victim gets beat up more for defending themselves they just glorify the bully. At least anyone that went to public school can relate to this

I destroyed everyone who tried to physically bully me and I was always the one who got in trouble. There is no winning but definitely better to take some ISS time instead of letting yourself get beaten. I moved around a lot growing up so I actually welcomed physical attackers because people wouldn't insult me to my face if they knew I had been in a fight. My worst school experiences were when no one attacked me so lots of people the whole year would call me names cause I looked kinda crazy when I was younger.
Oh yeah, it happened to me a couple of times.
I thought back but their "No tolerance policy" was to suspend me as well, for defending my self.
I will never forget that I told them "So you expect me to sit there like a sack of potatoes and take his hits? Dumbasses"
Fortunately, my parents more than backed me up with the small difference of "Next time user a chair"
Or prison - though the penalties are worse in prison - 25 days taken off your good time for fighting and you're written up on a 200 - 100 series offense. As well as revocation of parole/probation.
It reminds me of the scene in Spider-Man in where Peter defends himself and they are all against him and side with bully.

Learn how to quote people properly. As for this generalization, it is false. It sounds hopeful, but one only needs to look at any tragedy from history to see that there are graveyards filled with good, hard-working people who were obliterated in horrible ways (World War II, 9/11, etc.). Besides, Louis's own life hasn't ended so he cannot speak about how life ends, or whether his own end will be "fair." Fair doesn't exist. There is no judge at the end of it with a scale. There is no objective measure of one's existence, only what's in your own brain. You might be a great person who is murdered or a piece of shit of dies while having sex. Work hard and do your best, but don't be under any illusions.

Louis, you are one of my favorite people on this whole planet and I hope like hell you see this. I'm not a religious person, but I believe you exist for a reason. And while you're good at board repair and almost eerily good at remembering serial numbers, I think your purpose is higher than that. Keep doing your board repairs and posting those videos. +Louis Rossmann Yup it's great advise, and I know the feeling as well... I wasn't the weekest kid, but I was slow, and I had a class mate in elementary school, as well as in high school(the same person), that wasn't strong enough to really hurt me, but he would pay my other class mate, to annoy me, or other times he would just hide my stuff, or damage it cause I was even more sensitive to that, than actually getting hit, or verbally abused... University was(and is) a bit different, I was a bit more silent, and wouldn't hang out with others much, I guess hiding in background, and not letting everyone close sometimes also work, but it has the disadvantage of not being present when some important stuff being announced(but I just don't really mind it)... And I also had multiple teachers, that just didn't care, or would punish me for not being silent...
Some people just don't really tolerate weirdos who make stuff, spend their time in the school's IT lab, playing on "broken" PC's using some ubuntu live disk, when every other PC is occupied... :) My solution was learning karate for a while, and carrying my stuff always with me, even in breaks...

@@NMG.11 It's a little too narrow expression about broad context.. sure behavior in general shouldn't be let to change, but, and in order to keep the general behavior and sanity, the behavior towards the individual bullies *must* be changed. There's no need to feel bad about giving deserved payback.

You're spot on here. Hollywood loves the story of the little kid fighting back and then the big bully respecting him.
It's dumb. Some bullies are pathological (which it seems like he was). If you fight back, their anger grows. Their determination to make your life hell increases 10-fold. Chances are, they are being abused...or heaven forbid, they're just born with a faulty, pathological brain. Fighting back as a strategy is a horrible idea.
Honestly, I don't think Public Schools should be mandatory. We should be able to opt out of having those types of experiences.
I agreed with you til I read the last 2 sentences. You're clearly being one-dimensional on the issue. There are many negative implications with what you've written. Public schools SHOULD be mandatory.
You know, you can't make the world around you all nice and easy, you can't escape the harsh reality. It doesn't work that way. I get it though, the vast majority of people want to make their lives easier, to alleviate whatever they're struggling with, it's natural. But there should be a right balance between good and bad, between enjoyment and suffering, otherwise there will be no meaning in life. The world is cruel but you have to learn, you have to grow, you have to overcome challenges on your way like, for instance, bullying. And the harder your lesson is, the farther you get in life. And if that lesson breaks you, I'm sorry, maybe you weren't born to win.

If the argument is that kids need to learn how to interact with other kids there are countless alternatives than sticking them in a classroom. Sports for instance being a great example. I learned more about myself and other kids growing up from playing soccer twice per week for two years than I ever did in the entirety of my academic career.

In 2009-2010 I was bullied buy one of the most awful people I've ever had the misfortune of meeting. Strangely enough, karma got the better of him and he ended up in an accident where he fell 30 feet from a hillside and was permanently brain damaged. Now he's confined to a wheelchair and can't talk or speak properly. I never got back at him, but it didn't matter. I wasn't even glad it happened. I was just glad it meant that he'd never bother me or anyone else ever again.

i remember i once got bullied by my entire class i told my parents and family and they said "ignore it" not hey lets tell the teacher or lets tell the school, no they just told me to ignore it, but how...how does a 7th grader ignore an entire class full of students just ignore a bunch of people in my face shouting at me. i couldnt, and i was so mad at them because i tried to get help but help was denied by those i thought would protect me.
i mean now im older and no longer bullied but man that 7th grade year caused so much pain and mental shit for me in the future that could've been prevented.

7th grade was hardest for me too, the aabsolute worst.
You are right, fighting does not work even if you are big and strong.
I let the bully and his mate attack me in front of a teacher, that did nothing.
Reported the incident to school authorities, that did nothing, called the headmaster a coward, that did nothing.
Later I beat up said bully and his mate, did it solve anything? No, because one week later the bully now had two mates with him...
In the end, I had to change school, because it was becoming stupid.
He even tried to come and bother me in the new school.
By then I had wizened up, and let him harass for a week or so, got some nice bruises, but carefully documented every event in my school agenda, took pictures etc.
Went to the cops with said agenda, had a long chat with a nice man, bully vanished from my life.
In electronics as in life, good documentation goes a long way.
i'm sorry that was your experience. in my eyes, it's a question of bluff and/or mental sanity on the side of the bully. after i beat up one bully. his other bully mate got a bit scared. he actually only wanted to bully the easy targets. but interesting to hear how you solved the problem in a smart and responsible way!
As someone who was bullied as a kid in physical ways, and in mental ways, both by students and teachers, I can honestly say that all bullying advice is situational. "Hit them back" worked for me with other students if they were physical, but that's because I was freakishly strong for my age and size. When you can shove a 200 pound wall of muscle back 7 feet and leave a dent in the lockers despite being under 90 pounds, generally physical bullies back off. But not everyone is the same, bullies and victims alike. Some victims are weaker, some bullies are bigger, some victims -me- have mental issues and can't control their emotions, some bullies are the same, some victims -me- aren't as effected by physical bullying, but are more affected by the mental aspect, the name calling, the insults, the manipulation, the lies, and some bullies use those less visible methods because they can get away with them more, some victims react more to physical bullying but are mentally solid, so the manipulators don't have as much an effect. It all depends on the situation.
And that's why most anti-bullying advice is nonsense. Even what Louis here said about not letting others effect your emotions. Sometimes, that's not possible. Sometimes, you can't just not do that. It's easy to say so, not so easy to get it done, as it is with anything. It's never as simple as "Just do this" or "don't do that", it's always, *always* more complicated than that, and anyone that doesn't realize that shouldn't be giving advice.
And bullying has more results than just causing school shootings. Suicide, drug use, alcoholism, mental illness, lasting physical trauma, PTSD, and all kinds of other things. A lot of the people that get bullied are bullied specifically because they're the people that can't, or at least seem like they can't, fight back, defend themselves, or withstand the mental and physical assaults delivered to them. A huge misunderstanding is that if you ignore bullies and don't let them see any reaction, they'll go away. Some might. In my experience, that only made it worse. I *still* deal with the mental aspect of bullying to this day, and I'm almost 20, starting college soon after a few years of a break after getting my GED, and I'm still bullied. It's given me depression, it's made my anger issues and anxiety issues worse, it's made my mental state degrade to the point of having hallucinations, hearing voices, quite literally losing control of my body and feeling like someone or something else is controlling it. And none of the effects, nor the problems, are going away any time soon, not entirely. But I know some things I could've done to prevent this, and some things I can do now to mitigate the effects.
All I can really say that's universal, however, is to use your brain if you can. Think about the issues you face, try to read the personality and actions of the bullies, and try to gauge what their reactions to things will be. Because that's what they're doing to you. Do the same to them, and whatever their weaknesses are- and believe me, they have weaknesses... Target those, mentally and/or physically, and make them realize what they're doing to you. Show them how they make you feel, by making them feel the same. Then stop once they realize. They'll leave you, and everyone else that they've bullied, alone. Or at least, they should.
Changing schools doesn't always work. I went to three different schools, one of which was a *private Christian academy*. Every time, there were bullies, and the only other options I had were homeschooling or online schooling. I went with the latter until I dropped out and got my GED to graduate early.
Long story short, no advice works for all cases. Use your brain and think up intelligent solutions to your problems, and remember to prepare for every eventually. Occam's Razor, anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. So all you can do is prevent what you can, and prepare for everything else if you can. Good luck, my prayers go out to all of you.

I actually beat a bully in two ways. I've always been naturally strong, but the bully was stronger. He had an entourage, one of which was kinda scrawny ... the scrawny kid once made the mistake of assaulting me with none of his buddies around. I got called into the Principals office to explain why I nearly choked him out in the middle of the gym. I didn't plan it, but it was the last straw.
It also turned out that because it was mostly a Native American school that I was good friends with one of the big bullies cousins. One day when I went to my friend's house to hang out the bully came over as well. In that more private setting, he was actually quite a bit more reasonable. Even though we only played video games for a little while and never hung out again I think he gained a little respect for me.
I'm not sure which incident made the most impact, but after those two things happened I never had another problem from him or his possee.
Like others said, it always depends on the situations. I myself got bullied by a gang of bullies that felt strong when they were together. Individually tho, they are weak as shit. So i took advantage of it, followed each of them to where they lived and then for a week straight, every night i sent a solid "message" to each of them. After i was done with the last one, i was never bullied again by any of them. I won't go into details much but let's just say i had a few screw loose when i was younger and would cross lines that shouldn't be crossed. Thankfully i got help for that later and am all better for it today but i am still satisfied in a way to what i did to them to leave me alone.
It wasnt my only bully experience but usually if you left me alone i didn't bother anyone. Provoke me and it's at your own risks, well when i was younger that is. Today you'd have to do something pretty horrible to me to make me angry in any way.
@@tifsa Trust me, Anger makes many people do stupid, horrible things, myself included. I used to act purely on impulse in a stressful situation, and I nearly got into deep deep shit on several occasions. Thankfully, I have worked through that now, and am much more stable. But I still remember what it was like, and it was horrible.

Hey man. You just described PTSD. Now you know, on a smaller scale of course, how we soldiers feel everyday after we come home from war. It never ends, it never gets better, the only thing you do is learn to cope with it better. Welcome to the club friend. But, I will say, good for you for learning how to deal with it. @@oneheckofabanana2016 It's not a horrible job. It's not even a 'job' so to speak. It is a calling. People join for their own specific causes. Mine was to do something good for the whole of the nation. It wasn't just to get a 'job'. I'm a Geophysicist by trade. I also do electrical work on the side as I have my Master Electrician license in Texas. But, yeah. It's not a horrible job. It's something that has to be done. Think about if you had no military, no soldiers. Who would stop an invasion? Who would help out when things go horribly wrong? Nobody. That's who. Also. If we didn't take up arms for you. Then, you would be forced under draft to do so or go to jail. So, it's a win-win. A win for those who don't want to and a win for the soldier. Because being a soldier also has it's benefits. I got a GI BILL to use for college tuition to get that Geophysicist career I always wanted. I could have paid for it via student loan and my electrician license. But, since I did go to the Army willingly (volunteer); I was given the opportunity to pay into the Montgomery GI BILL (yes, you have to pay for it with money from your check) and I paid for the kicker as well. No. I didn't know about the GI BILL until I signed my contract either. So, it isn't like I tried to join for 'free tuition' as some try to say. I joined to do good. But, a lot of people now have a bad view of the military. No. It isn't all roses. But, it isn't all bad either. Soldiers are just people like everyone else. And we do our best even though we see some really bad stuff. But, there you go. That's why I joined and I hope that sums up an explanation for your idea that it is a horrible job. And don't take this wrongly. I'm not chewing you. Nor am I angry with what you said. I get it. But, I just wanted to clarify it for you. We're good people just like you. Just some of the higher ups are bad apples. When you have them, and they give you a lawful order. You must follow it. If you don't, you risk jail, loss of pay, and possible shame that will render you near unemployable in the United States. Having a Dishonorable Discharge from the military is about the same as committing a serious felony offense in the eyes of employers. So, when you are told to do something. Well, YOU DO IT!

Your advice sounds a lot like the philosophy of stoicism which is very different from the stereotype of what it is. I figured out as a child that while I could be aware of my feelings, I never would let emotions affect my actions. I would always try to act in my own best interest regardless of how I felt. You gave great examples here.

I used to be bullied so much for thinking different (which got me to go to college 2 years early on a scholarship) and beaten up, I had to go to the ER multiple times and went on suicide watch, I hated it, until I got an invitation to a special school for kids who aren't into the normal things, and I loved it

Tell your kid to go to police station and tell police, that they are bullied, the teacher ignores it and they feel urge to take a knife to school and kill the bullies, that they don't want it, but the teacher ignored him, ignored his parents and if police doesn't help, they have no other option. Accompany your kid to the station and speak with the police yourself. The police will involve a psychologist and will go investigate in the school. The teachers will be forced to do something and might even get fired, because in this case, unions will sacrifice him. Unions protect their members, unless they are creating school killers, endangering other union members.

If ur being bulled, you need to understand why the bully chose you then change so that the bully no longer sees you as a viable target. Sometimes that means fighting back. Sometimes that means telling a teacher or authority figure. Sometimes that means telling a teacher the bully confided in you that his mother's boyfriend is molesting him. You be the judge. You choose which outcome you can live with.

Yeah I remember getting bullied in high school from grade 10 through 11 then the summer before my senior year I started weight lifting and boxing. I came back to school and literally no one tried anything from that time on. The thing is even though I had gained a noticeable amount of muscle I really wasn't that strong but that just goes to show that most bullies only prey upon people who are the absolute weakest in their eyes.

I was a teenager in the early 80s.
I was a die-hard geek/nerd.
These days, it's far more "socially acceptable" to be a geek or a nerd.
In fact, it's become almost fashionable.
I like nerds. You're a cool guy and I get a heck of a lot of enjoyment watching your videos.
I don't give a shit about what people think of me. It doesn't change my life in any way.
As for the "hit the kid back" bit... I did... I broke his nose... Not because he was bullying me but because he was getting rough whilst I was trying to put away our school's RML-380z and my concern was for the computer.
From that day on, whenever he saw me, he crossed the road.
Sometimes it works but it's not always a good idea.
I rarely fought back because I could run way too fast and no-one in the school could catch me.

Someone online recently told me that I need to get out more (without knowing me) and I agreed and pointed out that I'd love to but due to a spinal injury, my mobility is limited... It was an "egg on face" moment for the guy.

I got bullied from age 7 to about 15. Unfortunately my bully had his friends that would defend him when we'd get physical. I always fought back and most of the times didn't win because he was a fat fuck (and to this day he still is). Now i'm 6ft and athletic. I will never forget the mental damage he did to me, it was far worse than physical. Because of him i've spent my teenage years in solitude, with very few friends and with no will to socially interact with strangers and acquaintances. Now when im 20, i'd love to beat him up so bad he'd need a good plastic surgeon to fix his gorilla smug face. But i'm not gonna get down to his level. Karma is a bitch, i'll let her deal with him.

Same here, I was skinny and tall, bullied, all that. After a few years in the military I put on a lot of muscle and a few inches of height. The only take away of my bullying experience is now I stick up for those that can't. I am a nicer person & have found peace in my life. I don't even remember the names of most of my bullies anymore, I saw one of them few years ago. He approached my car asking for a few dollars, he was homeless & drug addicted. He didn't recognize me until I recalled his name...Lee Meyer former bully, present day homeless addict. KARMA or not, I found no reason to gloat or smile...it was a lesson to me...stay true to your principles & be kind to others.

There's an interesting positive movement in Croatia & world called street workout, and at least half of those teens & young adults were victims of some kind of bullying (as a former bullying victim myself I can see it in their eyes, why they're doing it). It's really nice that young people have that, the ones who were in the same situation , and wing tsun kung fu for example. The streetworkout teams here form strong brotherly friendships, even if their minds become a bit overly body-centric, but from what I saw in Zagreb & Croatia they literally go to every school and give free training classes, advice and build their base. You would think when you see them in the park they are like "alpha males", but they are really open and friendly, help and give free events, advice and trainings, and ''force'' officials to build them workout parks. I'm very happy for kids/bullying victims to have that kind of a positive no bullshit force and visible support groups: tinyurl.com/otlddmn ...Bullies are like a hand of some evil force, it's never just one person doing it, and that evil smells your weakness/fear, so to see that there are some who resist it and create a cool power workout circle is awesome. This is so right. I did the same thing - gained about sixty pounds of muscle and have never had a problem with a bully again. From my experience bullies are always cowards that choose targets they think or know are weak. I can honestly say with all of my heart, that this is the very first UA-cam video I have ever cried while watching. The hurt, you felt about the crap that kid said about your Mom, is so tangible Louis. It seeps out of your pores at a certain point during your story and it broke my heart. It's also entirely relatable.
I'll try and keep this short, as I have a habit of not doing. I was a small girl, my max height now is 5'1", so you can imagine how small I was at 8. I'm adopted, I knew nothing about my birth mom until I was 30 (knew of her and that I was adopted but that's it) and I grew up as an only child. Got bullied alot in elementary. I was small, enjoyed playing football with the boys, was a tomboy. I was harassed on a continuous basis by a couple of boys. I was going through other shit at the time that I won't get into. But, I still to this day remember how much I hated 4th and 5th grade.

Bullies don't stop when you leave school, they get worse, they to f**k with your life, career, your health and your family. I'm not even talking about bullying at management level (that's something we all know about), i'm talking about co-workers that are so incompetent that they need to make someone look bad in order to advance their own career, and who do they pick on? That's right the quiet geeky guy in the corner, because "if I can make him look bad, then I won't have to work so hard to impress the boss".
It's not hard to make the "nerd" look bad, just accuse him of hacking or of creating software to do his job while he sits doing nothing, because even if he can explain himself, nobody will understand and nobody will believe him.
Well, I've learnt the hard way and I don't take sh*t lying down, i'm alert and aware of what's going on, I understand peoples motives and I always make sure my back is covered, I use what I know to protect myself and when my boss tried to set me up to commit a gross misconduct I voice recorded the f**ker.
The advice to strike back is correct, but the key is to think first, know your limits and use what you know to your advantage.

My time in highschool was similar, I was smart and fat, got bullied from grades 2-10 (a charming blend of racism and the usual remarks) ended up with busted ribs once from one of the routine beatings. I definitely agree you shouldn't go to extremes and toss people down stairs or into traffic but, in my experience if you are in a position to undermine a bully whether it be socially, mentally or physically, once you've done it they'll generally leave you alone and move on to the next weakest link.
ignoring bullies, being nice, telling on them etc doesn't work, finding a way (preferably intelligent) to confront them and as you say, fighting hard to deter them is basically the only way as long as you don't become the bully.

I remember growing up with my brother, he had incredible pent up rage and aggression from his own insecurities and thoughts. He was so frustrated with himself and what he thought everyone thought of him that, when he saw my abilities and talents, he saw me as a threat to his world and place in the family. He’d take any opportunity to be superior to me, and if he had it, he’d abuse it. I was lucky to have a mother who knew just how to raise and handle both of us, and a father who could scare him from hurting me further. but when they were away, I was always in fear of him. He was stronger than me, as well he hated what I was, so it was strange to see him sympathetic when after he was done beating or belittling me he would see me attacking myself and beating and scratching myself. He would sit there thinking of himself as horrid, thinking that this is his fault, when his little bipolar brother was screaming how much he hates himself and continues to do more damage to his own body. I never understood it as a kid why he was like the way he was, why he would be attacking me one moment but stop when he saw how awful I’d react, why he would be sympathetic afterwards. It was because he was human, and he was the same victim of other’s manipulation. He never understood himself until he was an adult, and he never knew how to manage his own issues without displacing his anger onto whatever he thought was ruining him. Bullies are people who need as much guidance as those who are bullied, because they all come from a certain background that shaped them into who they are in that moment. Some may have come from being bullied and take it as a way to help themselves, others have been abused by parents and think the only way they can show themselves powerful is in enacting that same behavior onto someone else deemed “weak”. And some are simply mentally ill children with no concept of remorse, because they had no guidance-even proper guidance-to save themself. Perspective should always be taken into account when managing these sorts of people, and if you can find a way to see into the “bully’s” ideas, you can manage with them properly. I only really understood how to talk to my brother when I grew up and handled my own illnesses; I put myself into his level to understand why he “hated” me. And from that, I grew a better understanding of him and have found a way to love him like the brother he was supposed to be. Granted, not every person is like this, and not every person deserves your respect or will even want it, but finding that way to relate with this person is the only way to manage a conflict like this.

I can double confirm, getting into shape is the best way of dealing with bullies. I been bullied a lot for many years in high school, soon as i started to workout and getting strong, i received so much respect. Louis you always speak so much truth, i would say the only person who i seen who really understands bullying.
