8grand??!!! At that point just go get a brand new bike off the showroom floor!
8200 bucks for a 2023 250r , yeah this makes no sense whatsoever.
He paid 3 for the bike and put more money into it decking it out 😅 he’s got a lot into it buddy
@@Wisconsin-boys who put that kind of money into an old bike when you can get a brand new one for 8 grand still don’t make sense?? At least get something that’s fuel injected carbed 4 strokes run like junk
🤦🏻♂️
First bike and I understand it's your first bike and you want to put it up in the garage brand-new that's cool but if you're just going to go out and thrash
Unless you are building a professional race machine, I can't see how you could spend $8000 on a rebuild and NOT have every internal part new. Whatever mechanic he used, he should not go to any more. Great job diagnosing this. When I saw the video title, the first thing that ran through my mind was "Check the valves". That should have been part of an $8000 rebuild. I am guessing there is still something wrong (ring gap, or valve seals). I think he basically got ripped off.
8k would been spent on new one.
yes. what in the Hell? for $8k, I’d expect to start it up, put it in gear, ride down to my mailbox, open my fresh shipment of stupid pills, crush up 4x the recommended dosage, snort half of it, freebase the rest from my mother’s crack pipe she’s used my entire life plus 5 months (I was 4 mo premature), put my 12 early voting ballots into the mailbox for J. Biden, ride down the hill, then hit top speed in an attempt to make it across the same river that I sunk it in last time I had it rebuilt for $8.2k. I paid an additional $200 to have my headlight fluid replaced with a clear-tinted gender neutral invisible solvent & non-binary filter. what did you guys do that day?
I don't understand... $9500 total on a 20 year old bike.... a brand new 250f is that price... and this thing is almost bone stock other than the tank.
was coming here to say the same thing.. 8k is pretty steep no?? i live in ny where is seems like everything is over priced and i wouldnt be dropping 8k on a 20 year old bike
20+ years old is considered a classic in a lot of places and collectible if built to OEM/OEM+ standards, if not wanted by a collector who grew up riding the bike museums could potentially give a high value tax credit for the donation if not bought. Same reason you'd restore a vintage except parts are typically more available at OG costs the younger they are.
That fresh engine revving to the moon made me cry on the inside alittle bit lol
Rev it up 256 times😂
300$ bike. I guess he hates to hear something idling
I'm not sure what I'm most impressed with, your knowledge or your patience. Always about 10 minutes into your videos I think if I were in your place I would be throwing stuff.
Literally bro , I tossed a box across the room over an oil change on a bayou 300 🤣🤣
Right? I am proud that I can't control myself. Makes my life better.
@@eriklarson9137 who's proud?
All the cold revving on a first start of a new engine hurt my feelings lol
Let the man do this
Yea hate that with a passion!🤔🙈🤔😫😮😫🤔
I wanted to cry .
ESP with no oil clutch side
It’s a Honda. No worries.
My first guess was new Grips! People just underestimate the importance of new handlebar grips
"Seems like he took his time on this bike" as he pulls off floppy ass seat cover held together with like 3 staples and two zipties. Haha
Yeah whats with the zipties?
That was a pretty punk try at a seat cover for sure....
And the un-oiled air filter...
hahaha I had the exact same thought.
Those bars
Ive owned these bikes for a long time and the last thing you want to do is crack the throttle open while kicking to get it started. the procedure is as follows. gas on, two full throttle pumps, and choke on and without giving it gas kick it from top dead center and it will fire every time.
He won’t listen, lots of people have tried to tell him this in the past, he even cracks the throttle on 2strokes. Not hating on him but he never listens lol
@@danm2422 if he blipped the throttle like he does, on my old Kawasaki 500, you pulled the choke full on, no gas. It always started cold with three kicks. If you even touched the throttle it would NOT START.
On my old Kawasaki you certainly never touched the throttle. You left it alone full choke and three kicks started every time. You learned that quick.
I thought the same thing. Only time you go wot when cranking is if it’s flooded to get more air into the cylinder. But I will say he gets them running every time good job.
That's how the buy crabs with the electron carb no matter what if you ever had electronic Harvey with no it revs like that and that particular bike Brad's high anyways it's a fastrip so it sounds like he's rubbing it high but he's really not
Little tip to save you a ton of time and money next time. When diagnosing a no start and checking spark pay attention to whether it is a good consistent spark. If it appears to be a quick bright spark then disappear as this one does that is a tell tale sign of a stator/pickup coil shorted to ground. Should spark consistently on every other engine revolution. Also just checking stator with a meter would have also shown this.
Stators! I hate when they go bad.
Slavens has a neat method for testing spark, he cuts off the electrode, if the spark can't make the jump it's too weak:
ua-cam.com/video/T76ph6Uwmrg/v-deo.html
One thing I like to do at the beginning to separate if it's a fuel or a spark issue is have someone spray the air filter a little with brake cleaner whilst cranking it over, if it fires you know there's a good chance it's a fuel issue
Yeah, i hit 'em with starting fluid 1st thing. You find out real quick where to start looking.
I do the same. If it fires and dies it's fuel. If it doesn't fire you have other problems
Yep, side of the road test helped out w/ my truck. Fuel starvation is an easy troubleshoot
Amazing how you corrected all the faults from a bad rebuilt very good in deed
This guy is a top mechanic and can fix anything but I did feel sorry for that bike being red-lined on first start up 😂
He had plenty R’s left before red line 😂. It’s all the two strokes lately he’s been going through.
If you tried that hard to get a bike to run, there is no way you are letting that sucker stop, trust me.
That was painful to watch but I guess it will benefit him in the long run when it needs a rebuild sooner 😂
@@laska907 yeah I figured out that's how he thinks too!! You know what's worse than him doing. All the idiot's watching him and praising him for his ignorance Green grasshopper LMBO 😂😂😂😂!!
dude every bike this bike has is revved to the moon on cold start it breaks my heart.
There’s nothing wrong with putting money into a machine you love. I know exactly how this goes. He just lost patience with it and you rescued his investment. Nice job man.
Fantastic video. Logical sequence of test, test, test. I learned so much. I’m going to revive my Honda XR 650 R, and my KDX 220. I had no idea about mechanics or how to start but now that I’ve watched your videos I feel comfortable going into it. Thanks a million.
when you said "maybe its not getting fuel" i was like "because there isnt a Tank 😅
right?
There is plenty of fuel in the float bowl guys. He clearly showed it during the beginning of the video. It'll run for a little while without the tank.

😮😮 This is my third time working on this series. Plenty time this holiday 2023 for some favorites. Joe’s skills are great. I’ve watched so many of these I need to refresh my favorites. 😊😊
I grew up on minibikes right on up to everything in between even homemade projects. I love small engine repairs and a passion to ride anything with a wheel on it lol. But I give you my full attention while I enjoy watching you at work. Im 60 years ald now and I can't believe how far these dirt bikes have come like a new vehicle I can't keep up with the digital world stuff a sensor every 5 inches apart and I know that there's a good living doing that type of work. Just getting your name out there and plenty of repeat customers are the best word of the month is the best advertisement. Good luck with your adventure and stay safe your a very good at making sure people understand why you do the things you know first before you have to much invested into something that might be better for another day because you will come across that special part or piece to finsh a back burner project. Thank you again..
Nice work going through the diagnostic procedures. The tip below on not twisting throttle while kicking the 4-strokes is KEY!
He never learns.
Sorry, I read this just after making a similar comment!
My four stroke bike will only start if I do twist the throttle so it may depend on the bike
Only guy I ever knew that could heat up a throttle cable from the inside
Just some advice those fourstokes have a hard time starting giving it that much throttle when you kick it most 250fs won’t start like that
Yea, like almost all other motorcycles,
I respect 2vintages Work and dedication but his habit of giving them throttle on startup is one thing I hate with passion.

Wow, that one was frustrating... even to watch lol. I knew that you would figure it out and not give up. I'm agee with that wire and the shavings in the stator causing a short . (Intermittent spark) keep up the good work. Can't wait for part 2:)
Love the content. I'm learning a lot from them. Having a string on bad luck myself with a Chinese quad lol

right?
Lol yup. "Everything he bought was top of the line" *pans around to the jank-ass cheap looking seat cover*
Joe, you are an amazingly talented mechanic! But I must draw your attention to the very beginning of the video when you asked Vinny what the problem was and he went directly to the stator!!! Vinny knows! Is he on the payroll?

That's so awesome your helping a subscriber out! I'm sure he's paying for your time, but that makes sense. I'll tell you, if I ever get stuck, and can't figure the issue out, you would be my very first choice for help. Great job
Have the same bike with the same problem, I'll go over some of the stuff you've done that I haven't, I was hoping you'd do a video on one of these CRF 250's.
Did ya figure it out?
Just how many times must you kick a bike engine over looking for spark and not seeing spark? 5 or 6 kicks should show you everything you need to know.
Love the dirtbike/motorcycle videos. Keep em coming! Great job as usual.
Once I saw your spark test, I immediately thought electrical. Glad you ran through all the mechanical stuff too and fixed gap spacing and all
IM more of a quad and side by side guy but these videos have made me want to get back into dirt bikes again. Great job as always Joe
Do it! I was a die hard sport quad guy my whole life 20 years. I just bought my first bike a 22 yz450f. I have been having a blast, it's actually fun to not be an expert again if that makes and sense.

Quit twisting the throttle when trying to start. That's why it's taking forever
He does that with every bike. People have been telling him for years.
And revving the piss out of a fresh rebuild as soon as it starts up.

Very cool watching your troubleshooting skills... Definitely the hardest part... I went from being a bike/atv/snowmobile/car mechic into computer science after I grenaded an arm and wrist. Sooo crazy how troubleshooting skills translate across multiple platforms......
Troubleshooting is such an art and applies across multiple platforms!! Super cool watching and learning!
Awesome mechanic!! You make it look so easy. Keep up the excellent work.
Nice to see you got it running. When dealing with problems like this on any engine it's good to make one change or repair at a time. This way you know what works and what doesn't. Was it the valves or the carb or the stator. The not knowing makes it harder for the next project. If it can save you time that saves you money
"Everything he bought is OEM". Takes off seat... "Look at all those aftermarket parts in there.."
👏BRAVO, after much frustration you found it. 😱I would have guessed the dreaded electrical
wow, I am thoroughly impressed with your persistence
Great great job on that one Joe ! Love the shim formulas and all ! You are definitely a pro at this stuff buddy !
I used to own a crf 250 x and the trick to starting it was never twist the throttle when kicking it over or you were in for a hard start. Great diagnosis!
I cant understand why Joe twists the throttle on a 4 stroke. It only works on 2 strokes.
Absolutely correct. It has an accelerator pump. Twist the throttle 2 times before kicking pull choke and she should fire up first kick as long as everything else is in spec.
@@slickricktheruler its to allow more air into it. you get a cylinder full of unburnt fuel, so in turn you open the throttle to get more air to mix with the fuel. like blowing on a fire. same way we open the choke. it just adds basically a little more choke. more air the better on startup. its just not good when its running because the fuel burns way to hot , and causes issues .not sure where people got the impression , that you never touch the throttle during startup . im assuming a reddit post ?
I enjoy watching all of your different videos, I've learned a lot about how to repair engines and little things to try when everything should be working, but they don't . Too, what may actually be a good buy, with just a bit of work. 👍
I know jack shit about bike mechanics but damn this is Hell of a fascinating.
Been binge watching.
I'm a steel / electric motor / electronics/ concrete guy but love learning.
Vinnie sniffed that the front brake line runs on the wrong side of the shock. 😅
You are the man when it comes to fixing small motors!
At first I thought, all that work and the SOB won't start. Good job as always. The owner knew who to take it to. Keep up the good work 👍
When doing valve adjustments I always go for the wide side of spec. More torque and easy starts hot.
Any chance of an update sometime? That thing never sounded like it was running very good and I’m sure a few of us are curious if it would actually make any power. Thanks.
really took his time as theres zip ties around the seat
He didn't have a staple gun. The rest of the bike looks like he really took his time.
Dude you are crazy at this stuff been subscribed to the channel for a while love watching and learning from your content thank you 🥰🥰🥰
I enjoy watching ur vids. helps to get a new perspective on things while wrenching. and I always like another set of eyes making sure I'm doing what should be done correctly. only thing I would reccomend for u is to not use the impact while loosening torqued bolts that are into aluminum or other soft metals. steal is fine imo go nuts on it. but aluminum!!. on my rides i always break bolts loose by hand then use the impact. if u use an impact repeatability say troubleshooting or a clutch basket. u will destroy the threads. I'm all for saving time. but I'm also for not causing ANY damage. just my 2 cents from being a mechanic 15 years and been around 45 year master mechanics my entire life. also ur pup or u shouldn't breath those fumes. much love from Michigan
Cool video brother keep up the good work
Why is everyone freaking out about reving a bike when you break it in... that's how you're supposed to do it, anyone that's ever rebuilt an engine knows you need to vary the throttle when breaking in an engine apposed to keeping it steady. That's how you seat the rings
I have PTSD or something because I can’t stand to watch him kick that bike and it won’t turn over. Brings back every moment when every bike I have owned wouldn’t start.
Yeah I agree the bur on the crank trigger and possibly also the shavings from it interfering with the signal were causing the pickup to give the intermittent spark and maybe changing the Ig timing to be off/jumpy depending if it read of the bur or not. Probably happened from the pickup/trigger air gap being off have seen that a few times with non runners from customers trying to install new pickups before.
My friend you are a magician. You could be a teacher for this stuff. I want to say thank you cause I feel like I am learning a bit each and every tear down you make. Thank you again.

Or buy a used one for around $1k. $8k blows my mind for only a 250.
That's what I thought 🤷🤦
yeah he got cornholed on this deal...
I'm assuming that's due to labor charges, that's why smart men learn to fix things themselves - saves money and a good hobby. Plus can have way more toys for less

$8000 jesus he was taken for a ride with labor charges because a full engine rebuild will never cost that much,i had a 2002 and fully rebuilt it including bottom and top end for $3000 including the labor
Great video as usual. Good to watch you work your way through to a fix.
After watching these videos with Joe working on these four strokes I'm so glad that I wrote two-stroke since the seventies and still riding two strokes I love my husky 300 fuel injected 2-stroke
I love how he squirts oil in the head and then is confused when the bike smokes LMAO! Love the videos man!! Keep pumping out good content
Here's my question did he build the engine or did he have a shop do it ? If a shop did it they'd be fixing it until it runs
Love the channel. Great learning moments. Engine basics, same on a Honda 250cc or Cadillac 472ci. 😭I didn't know there would be math. If the garage was't fumigated before, it is now.
Amazing persistence and diagnostics! I can't believe you work that long on a bike while squating down... I'd be crippled after 1/2 hour!
I recommend getting yourself one of the inline spark plug testers from Walmart that you can attach to that spark plug by getting A set of automotive spark plug wires to make A adapter for going onto those spark plugs without the regular threaded tip on it like A lawnmower does.,or vehicle would normally that is to Joe. You slide that wire out of the end to squeeze it around to fit the other set-up on those spark plug without the threaded twist on tip.
To be completely honest I guessed it was the pick up coil from the beginning I have had the same problem with so many of my four stroke dirt bikes and motorcycles but excellent diagnosis man and as usual great video keep them coming love watching your videos 👍🔥
Lucky the timing chain fell and he had to take the case off
I don't think somebody did a very good job of rebuilding the engine
I was stumped watching you try to diagnose that bike I could feel the frustration lmao. Only thing I’d say is on 4 strokes no matter how hard it is to start you don’t wanna twist the throttle while kicking. Give it a few twists then kick it without twisting the throttle. Good work
Yup. It took me a while to figure that out. Kinda have to do a little starting sequence on these for them to start consistently
Sterling work young fella , what a conundrum . Vinnie was trying to tell you that that Yamaha with the DYNASTART that would run and then not run , had an issue with the live wire into the ignition . The wire wasn't strong enough , and the heat generated when it was running increased the resistance and inhibited the current flow . That's what he said anyway .
The price tag on New 250r is just over 8 grand , this makes no sense whatsoever.
Absolutely agree. What an idiot to drop $8k on an old abused bike.

to those about to whine about the startup revving: know that he was nowhere near redlining. those that have actual experience with this specific 250 will tell you that he was in the bottom half of the rev spectrum the entire time, but it does jump from the middle to the top pretty dang quick. that’s why this era CRF250R was so good coming out of the corners & on Florida tracks. it’s a berm blaster, for sure. I had/kept this exact year/model bike & it’s big 450 brother for over 5 years. the 450 hurt me more than any other bike I crashed on course & I avoided it for nearly a year before we made up. I was wearing a stupid pressure suit because it seemed cooler than the type of gear that kept me safe for over 12 years of serious & circuit riding. that lesson was learned the hard way. I made it through, but blew the best season I ever had going.
personally, I would’ve taken it a little easier on the startup; though, I wasn’t the one with a getting-sore right foot, burning quad muscles & hard-tried patience.
nice work, Joe. those rings will probably come in well enough in a cycle or two. the Honda Bong Hit you were hearing was probably due to the clutch side being oilless. if you try a LDT again with the wet basket side full, it won’t sound like my college apartment with my roommates watching the new South Park (not that I wasn’t seated with them or reading a Bible alone upstairs)
$830 for a carb for a non-circuit racer is pretty dang zealous. I had 4 sponsors, but would never…

I bought an 05 CRF 250 off the showroom floor for $5000 out the door due to it being last years model in 06. Once i redid the suspension to fit me it was the best handling motorcycle I have ever owned. I have had many. Wish I had never sold it.

How do you expect it to start with no gas tank ?
There's 8 grand in it. And your seat is zip tied down like what's going on. did he not hear it run when he got it back from the shop
Zip ties are only there to hold the aftermarket seat cover on without staples
its alive! the sweet sound of victory !! great job man rock on🤙✊
Those CRF throwaway MX bikes all have issues like that. If compression is low, good luck getting it to light off. They have a piston that looks like an aluminum disc with 2 tabs on it to keep it from turning sideways in the bore, and it uses one compression ring and an oil control ring and that's it. Titanium intake valves only compound the problem as the faces get pounded out and clearance goes away, killing compression. We won't get into a less-than-1 quart oil capacity which only promotes grenade action.
Bring back the 2-stroke MX bikes!
Joe, you're a pro at this and you get stuff running when others give up! Thanks for a cool video!
