Don’t listen to all the “professional mechanics” in the comments hating on every little thing. I think your doing a amazing job. Keep the videos coming!
Evan, keep her going Evan, you can learn from every bike, even if you don’t make a lot on the odd one the experience is worth much more, good luck buddy.
Me too. My father had a friend who only had one arm and he would go to big shows like the Big E in Springfield Massachusetts and all of the manufacturers would have huge tents set up with all different model bikes and quads. After these shows closed, he'd take a set of bolt cutters and clip the cheap chains that were around these machines then simply roll them out the back of the tents while no one was there then roll them into the back of his van and take off. No one gave him a second look because how was a one-armed man supposed to steal motorcycles and 3 wheelers/quads? My father would then buy them brand new for $500 apiece (we also got a 1985 Honda ATC 250R and 1985 Suzuki Quad Racer 250 also brand new from the same guy). Ah, the good old days. 😁

Kept going to the docter having him test me for everything thinking something was cause it. He kept telling me I was depressed. I kept rejection that thinking it had to be something else. Plus, the '87 had the new low tank and a completely different set of plastics, and the ATAC system was 💩 canned for the new HPP system. The '87 was the best 125 from Honda for the next 10 + years, according to the purists, and imo they're right.
I have to admit i love your channel! I have not ridden in 22 years, pre kids. Now they are on their own I am getting another dirt bike. My last bike was a 94 KLX 650, loved that thing. My favorite years of CR’s. 85-87. Wish it had the blue seat. I was a tiny 12 year old and rode a 250 this huge 16 year old got new from grandparents as a gift in 85. Your stablizer arm on the rear brake system is also bent. With oil in the cooling system you could also have a leaky head and or gasket leak. Choke plunger is possibly adjusted to high and allowing extra fuel. Middle position clip with stock jets should run good. Also the needle taper could be worn out. Explaining why the clip is so high
I’m really loving your channel. It’s kind’a what I’ve been doing with motorcycles all of my life. That “boggy” running is what we have always called 4-stroking, which is almost always a fuel mixture thing.
Very clean and complete example you got yourself. Raced one in 86 and the engine is legendary. Totally worth a rebuild. The 87 is the real unicorn but this one is almost there.
The 1986 CR 125 had a rear drum brake, The 1987 CR 125 had a rear disc brake. I bought a 1987 brand new off the showroom floor and the dealer had a carry over 86 next to it and the rear disc brake is why I went with the 87.
That’s a smoking deal for that bike. And you didn’t get lied too or cheated. He was honest to you. That was my third bike I owned. I got a 86 cr125 in 1987 when I turned 14. The bike was an absolute legend!

Wow, I was celebrating another amazingly quick repair with you. That issue occurred too quickly for heat to be an issue, in my opinion. I can't wait to see what you find the previous person DIDN'T do correctly when you trace this down.
You started it in gear. Those ATACs are junk, get delet pipe to put in its place. They do plug up over time. We yank em if we see them, clean em out with some acetone or something and once repairs are done, reinstall them if wanted it on there.
Hey just a tip for the corrosion, never use green coolant like the bike had in it. Always use something like Motul motocool factory line red/orange coolant thats specially made for magnesium parts. The green coolant isnt bad in use but it will react over time when sitting still. I had a old kdx250 that the carb needle and tube was worn from years of riding and ran rich no matter what I did. Fouled every plug i put in it. A new carb had to be installed
Hot tip for checking spark at the plug… this is for secure ground connection instead of just resting plug on top of the head..get yourself 2 alligator clips and a short length of electrical wire, clips connected to each end of the wire… one clip around the threaded part of the plug, the other plug to a ground connection. At least this way you know for certain that the plug is grounded securely when kicking the motor over.
Love the deals you find I was a little suspicious when you said 87 because I thought that was the first year for rear disc brakes but awesome deal buddy God bless
Love the channel, always a learning moment. Your knowledge and patience are amazing. Keep up the hard work This may seem odd, but from my father, I learned: to examine all fluids and old parts for stories they have to tell
These little things that you find while problem solving a fault with old 2t crossers must be valuable info for many bikers.....always great informative videos.
I had a bunch of holes from corrosion in my cover. I glass beaded the cover to get rid of all the corrosion. Then I used JB Weld to fix the holes. There is a guy in Australia who sand casts aluminum cases so the corrosion will never happen again if you get to that point. Yours is much better than mine was.
What a rude, and incorrect, comment...if you're fouling plugs from using throttle with the choke on while starting a 2 stroke, you've got other issues going on...
I rebuit the exact same bike. It wasn't starting either, had to rebuild the water pump and the manifold connecting the carb to the cilynder head, had a crack after that, it ran like a bat out of hell. I loved that bike.👍
Once the bike is fixed up, good, they should run and sound great and definitely in the future definitely should start putting graphic kits on bikes, and ATVs love to see what number you pick for the graphic kits Love the Channel. Keep the awesome Contant coming.
I love your channel, so much great information. Just consider this, your young and you can breath in a lot of crap without any side effects, but over time it adds up and when your old you might wish you had been more careful. At least invest in a powerful fan to pull the fumes out of the garage when you dont want to open the door. 2 stroke smoke can be quite toxic…
My guess is the UA-cam algorithms favor frequent publishing. Thus, one would need to save up a collection of finished videos or do installments in somewhat real time. Online parts sourcing for older models adds lead time. @mustie1 and others do multiple videos on the same project as well. Plus more video opportunities for crusty old guys to comment 😂
Primary Compression in the lower crankcase requires seal and reeds to be good in order to get fuel mixture up to the top of the piston before they will start up but i noticed earler you were bashing the ATAC system that it doesnt really work, well they actually really do make a big difference and more so on smaller displacement bikes.
Someone's probably already said but the choke on these is also a fuel screw.... Up n down for choke clockwise and anticlockwise for fuel mixture..... Standard pilot was fine probably, fuel mixture needed adjusting. Have a look at the carb it's got 2 different sets of arrows for the choke mechanism
Had an 88 CR 125 and the suspension was primo and the forks were the best forks I had owned up until that year. Every year I had to put new crank seals in it but otherwise a dependable bike.
My 1987 TRX250X is having similar bogging issues, ran the Keihin and a Chinese carb and got similar results so I'm gonna change my spark plug and if that dont work check my needle to make sure it's not all the way down
The valve plate you replaced does have a hole through the middle (square hole) so the one you made isnt exactly correct. Changing the jetting definately seemed to help and it was revving out a lot better
I came across this video, my hats off to you, you are the man!! I watched both videos of this bike, I’m having the same problem with my 2000 KX 80 I just bought, I’m gonna check and do everything you did on this beast, and I know my problem will be solved, and fixed like this beast. great bike ,and great fix up,,,i wonder if the carburettor was set up for methanol?,,and they bypassed the ATAC expansion chamber valve for the same reason??--reguardless,, what a great bike
Hey man I love your shows but when you go to start an engine if you'll hold the throttle wide open they will start a lot easier and when riding them still going up and down with throttle hold it steady
I love the way it's always a mystery what’s wrong. It's like a detective novel, with the sleazy seller saying "Oh.. there's nothing wrong. It started right up, but now it won't start." 🤣
Not what the seller said so get it right.he said it ran but bogged.he thought it was the reeds.seller wasn't sure what Was wrong.and that's what he told him so get it right.
@@jerrywilcox9890 Ok ok.. Lol.. It's just a joke. But seriously almost every episode of 2vintage has Joe buying a bike from a seller who says there is nothing wrong with it, and it ran fine, and now it won't run anymore. Sometimes it's an easy fix, and sometimes it needs a whole new piston and top end or something. Anyway, I really enjoy watching Joe narrow down the problem, and then get the bike running.
You are correct 87 was the first year of the rear disc brake on the CR125 and this bike must by a 86 because it has the drum brake.
You are doing a fantastic job VINTAGE PAL! MY VP!
Love your content! I’ve learned so much from watching your videos! Keep them coming!
Love the channel, always a learning moment. Your knowledge and patience are amazing. Keep up the hard work
This may seem odd, but from my father, I learned: to examine all fluids and old parts for stories they have to tell
These little things that you find while problem solving a fault with old 2t crossers must be valuable info for many bikers.....always great informative videos.
I'm certain the carburetor had been adjusted to Account for the missing baffle. It will need to be tuned at this point now that you have replaced it
I had a bunch of holes from corrosion in my cover. I glass beaded the cover to get rid of all the corrosion. Then I used JB Weld to fix the holes. There is a guy in Australia who sand casts aluminum cases so the corrosion will never happen again if you get to that point. Yours is much better than mine was.
I also had this bike as a kid.thanks for bringing back some fun times.the honda was way faster than the Yamaha.
If you had checked the oil prior to agreeing on the price, you could have negotiated him down. Just a thought.
Doubt it parts alone are worth more then 500.
Same issue is going on with cars and cameras CR500. Has a bad bog.
Can anyone explain why hose clamps are still flat head screws?!?!?! Blows my mind and aggravates the crap out of me haha
i guess u dont listen ur commenters but DONT give bike gas when u have the choke on, u will foul the plug most likely
What a rude, and incorrect, comment...if you're fouling plugs from using throttle with the choke on while starting a 2 stroke, you've got other issues going on...
Had one, it used to foul the plug, choke or not ! 😞
I rebuit the exact same bike. It wasn't starting either, had to rebuild the water pump and the manifold connecting the carb to the cilynder head, had a crack after that, it ran like a bat out of hell. I loved that bike.👍
$500 is a steal, remember the chain slider or your gonna wear a hole in your swingarm… just like I did many years ago 🍀👍🙏
If you use your eyes you will see he puts on a carbon filter spray painters mask when he starts it up
Just when I thought you were on the right track by focusing on finishing projects....here you go again. Another 1/2 finished project coming up.
I'm with you. Too many half finished videos.
@@markusaytcrusty old guys laughing at all of your fuckups
You take the motorcycles off of your truck so gracefully. Have you ever dumped one while unloading?
Best channel i learn so much by watching your channel much love from sweden❤
Realy enjoyed the hard work , and determination , patience, most of all the payoff ride, Outstanding Dude,😊👍✌️🇺🇸
He doesn't check the oil when looking to buy the bike? That's one of the first things I'd do, and I'm not a mechanic.
Love the videos, though.
He mostly negotiates on fb marketplace, in some Videos He said im gonna Pick up X He had it listed for X amount i offered him X and He agreed
*negotiates beforehand
My 1987 TRX250X is having similar bogging issues, ran the Keihin and a Chinese carb and got similar results so I'm gonna change my spark plug and if that dont work check my needle to make sure it's not all the way down
The valve plate you replaced does have a hole through the middle (square hole) so the one you made isnt exactly correct.
Changing the jetting definately seemed to help and it was revving out a lot better
And the old plate has probably gone through the exhaust untill finding somewhere to block ?
Love your channel. My next goal is to find an old CR125 fixer upper, as I had a 1976 model and it was pure badass
The disc that fell off is probably stuck in the exhaust pipe restricting the exhaust gases just a thought , love the channel 👍🏻
Probably should of used JB weld on those holes.
The epoxy will not make it lol
Just make a cap to replace the atac as it was just a gimmick similar to the boost bottle before it.
I came across this video, my hats off to you, you are the man!! I watched both videos of this bike, I’m having the same problem with my 2000 KX 80 I just bought, I’m gonna check and do everything you did on this beast, and I know my problem will be solved, and fixed like this beast. Awesome video, I look forward to the next bike you get you’re hands on. I wish I could find them as cheep as you find them . A new fan gene 👍👍🤙🤙
I've always started my 2 stroke scooters (Vespa and Lambretta) with a closed throttle, when starting cold on choke.
You deserve more views this channel is awesome
11:19 needles moving
Check the water pump for corrosion cause I did eventually have to fix that but never had any issues with it running!
I had same bike. Actually +3.I removed the atak when installed a full dg system. I could never get jetting spot on. Alway had slight bog at 3/4 throttle. I was also 17 . 30 years ago and wasn’t the best at tuning..
BRAVO, is another great find. Besides a great backyard mechanic, you can sniff out some finds
Hey I love your channel and content!!!! Been watching non stop for 2 weeks.
This is my ASMR. I have watched 80% of all the videos so far. I try to limit it now to one per day. Keep making these videos and I'll keep watching. Are you going to run out of bikes in your area soon? I mean how many can you find in one area?
Has anyone ever heard of a PY90 ? I had one when I was younger and I loved that bike the most , has so much fun on it and it took some abuse ! Watching from Ireland 🇮🇪
Pw90
@kingyankee69 yeah moreless the same style bike ! Been looking out for one for a while
@castortroy6588 I got an 86 yamaha big wheel 80 in decent condition I've had it for over 20 years it has super fat tires its red and white very cool collectors bike
@@rockman49erI remember them. Cool bikes.
@@rockman49erthink they was called fat cats
We love your show because you are so GOOD!
Are you not tempted to take along cable ties to check for milkyness before handing over cash?
I had the same bike. Magnesium and not using distilled water messes the water pump impeller up. Myne had the same problem. The owners manual says to run 20:1 mix. Myne smoked soooo much but never fouled a plug and idled perfect with plenty of power.
27:20 Welcome to HOTBOX the garage! Brought to you by 2 Smokers Enclosures! Nothing like the smell of premix in the morning!
Seat cover would have been blue. One of the meanest 125’s ever made!
Sounds really cool, now smooth in the higher revs.👍
great bike ,and great fix up,,,i wonder if the carburettor was set up for methanol?,,and they bypassed the ATAC expansion chamber valve for the same reason??--reguardless,, what a great bike
Only issues I had with that year 125 was the ATAC.power valve on them but great bike
Not to ell you how to spend your money, but for 12 dollars I would have replaced that butterfly valve with an OEM part.
Hey man I love your shows but when you go to start an engine if you'll hold the throttle wide open they will start a lot easier and when riding them still going up and down with throttle hold it steady
Vinny looked like a doctor/ scientist with those goggles on him...... DOCTOR ViNSTER ❤ !!!!!!!❤
Kick starting in shorts makes me cringe lol. I had my foot slip and the kick starter tore my leg up bad
He never said there wasn't anything wrong.
That's why it's like a detective show. Cheers :-)
@@robinbrowne5419 who says they don't know.not everyone is a mechanic.
@@jerrywilcox9890 Take it easy.. I am not trying to argue with you :-)
Another great video. I like to try to revives bikes that haven't been run in a long time by putting it in 2nd or 3rd and roll down a big hill.
Why can't I ever find Facebook deals this good 😂
Cause he beats us to em🤣 he’s the guy who’s got a truck and 5k cash and just waits for deals to pop up and snags them same day.
I can find some good deals on Facebook in my area all the time,it takes a lot of looking
Put an ad "dirt bikes wanted".
@@myguitaryourface5160 I'm sure you live in a big city or a country town I don't I live in a small city and new dirt bikes pops up every other day and most of them want 1500+ for junk and the cheap bikes are just frames or small trial pit bikes/Chinese I have yet to see a mostly complete bike under 1000 bucks lol
@edjacobson8480 never works...people just offer you shit at more money. Put the effort in to get deals.
I’ve got an 1989 cr125 just sitting in the garage. Runs fine, new tires, complete… not perfect but a good looker and runner. Hopped up motor too… thinking it’s time to let her go…
New to the channel here. Just wanted to say that I love your videos. Clean work and detailed talk.
I got a KTM 520 exc '02. I was wondering, can you do a top build on a 4 stroke so I can learn some from that? Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Go to upallnight91 he does several 4 stroke rebuilds and with ktm's , he's a pro mech. With over 20yr. Experience. Very thorough, detailed explanations.
@@bradley7723Thank you!
1986 had DRUM brakes. I loved that bike.
1987 had rear disc as far as I remember from 1990 when I rode one.
You can get gold colour premix too. Amsoil interceptor is gold and you should know this because you used to use it all the time lol
Need to clean the carb and try cleaning the power valve too them get gummed up. check your compression too might be a lil low.
33:09 Epoxy mixing ASMR! haha
Nice one dude...love the older Hondas
