In my long career as an auto mechanic I exclusively worked on VWs for the first 28 years, when they began as aircooled. It was common to see them "swallow an exhaust valve" as in normal operation they required manual valve adjustments; being too tight as the valve stem stretched. I saved the heads of the broken off valves in a drawer in my toolbox and had 163 of them. I didn't see if the larger intakes or smaller exhaust valves was the one that snipped off. You brought back a lot of memories for me. Keep up the good work. This most concisely demonstrates why not only does “Everyone needs a Craig”, but Craig has a talent for explaining the complex into easy to understand terms. He should be teaching! Great job!
Limiting the scope of this project to just the top end is a gamble, but a brilliant one IMO. If he gets away with it, it will save tons of time, effort, and money. Hardly anyone would sink time into it without doing a total rebuild. You can't warranty it. I think he has a good shot. He might be doing a busa burnout 🔥🔥🔥 in the next episode. Take a 2 week test ride Craig.
@14:39 - That's an External Wastegate, not a Blow Off Valve. The Wastegate controls the amount of boost you produce and prevents the turbo from spinning too fast, by allowing some of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbo. This is an external wastegate because it's outside the turbo, versus a traditional swingvalve wastegate often located in the turbine housing / outlet. Because that bypassed exhaust doesn't go thru the turbo (which quiets it down by stealing some of it's energy), guys often "divorce" it's outlet from the exhaust like this into it's own "dump tube", which causes the engine to be much louder whenever the wastegate is open. The Blow Off Valve (BOV) is on intake side, on the charge piping between the turbocharger and throttle body, and is what makes the loud "psssh" noise on shifts etc. It allows boost pressure to be vented to the atmosphere when the throttle body is closed, so that the pressure doesn't reverse direction and go back into the turbo, causing the compressor to stop suddenly and stall, leading to wear, and increasing turbo spool time when the throttle is opened again. If you vent the boost back into the intake instead (what most factory turbos do), it's instead called a bypass valve (BPV) and is much quieter.
21:39 That manual cam chain tensioner is the culprit I'm telling you right now. Every knucklehead that gets one over tightens it. That leads to your chain guides quickly wearing out and shaving plastic into the oil pan. That clogs the oil pickup screen. Oil starvation would most likely be why your cams are worn, your connecting rods are tight on the big end (unless ypu meant "tight" as in not sloppy and worn out) and the pistons got hot and detonated. The detonation can cause valves to break as well as typical piston damage.
On top of all that it looks like one pistons top ring butted together (22:26), not enough ring gap under high heat/load. The ring expands, butts together and then cracks the piston.
You have a lot more faith than I do. I'm working on a motor that dropped a valve and I'm pulling the whole lower end apart for cleaning. All it takes is one tiny piece of piston in a crank lube hole and the whole bottom end will go boom. Good luck with it!

LOVE the RE5. Blew up my honda back in 88 on a roadtrip in Seguin Texas. Costed the Honda in to a local motorcycle dealership and it was done for. They had a beautiful RE5 sitting on the floor so I traded them on the spot. Wound up roadtripping that Suzuki across all of Texas (just stopping wherever and living out of a tent) for the next 6 months. Things you HAVE to know - it is a 2 stroke - the oil goes in a separate tank on the right hand side of the bike. If it has run without 2 stroke oil, it will likely have burned rotor tips & will need to replace them. Flush the coolant. Treat it like an old Suzuki Waterbuffalo in every way but the motor. It is a blast.
You need to get a filter cutter tool , works like a can opener so it doesn’t put metal in the filter makes it easier to get to the filter media to inspect
I love how you explain in detail all the parts and functions. For a new generation (or two) learning how to work on these bikes it's great. I personally love working on the vintage (old) bikes, but this pretty cool and I can't wait to see your progress.
Not enough ring end gap is why the lands blew outta that other piston. Ring closes up gap, ring can't expand out anymore so it wants to go sideways and blows out the ring land. More end gap on turbski motors, especially non intercooled.
Hi Craig. The broken valve/piston is one thing but the other broken piston is another. Make sure you have enough ring end gap for a boosted application. It will be considerably wider than non boosted. Should be an absolute rocket when you get it done.

backpressure in the oil return line could increase the oil leaking into the intake side. All the oil sitting above the throttle body is just from the turbo
My hope is you plan to do the bottom end as well, I'm concerned about bent rods. I wonder if you cant get a low compression flat top piston that could alleviate some of that detonation? Great video!!
Hey a great way to open a canister oil filter like that is a pipe cutter. Runs little cutting discs around the edge and can cut the top ring off a filter clean, no debris. They make both direct-pressure versions (couple of big cutting discs) or chain cutter versions (lots of small cutting discs). Great tool to have around a shop.

@@maddog7999no idea what busa parts go for. But the amount of machine time to fix what I've seen so far up to the 25min mark. Your better off buying new parts for a third of the engine and doing a full rebuild than trying to machine what could maybe be saved and replacing whats totally gone and slapping it back together.
I have been working on turbo engines for many years, i used to work for Saab, and had myself, many project cars of my own with turbo engines. Based upon the damage on the pistons and the broken valve, i think the damage is from ignition. Your hayabusa enginge has no knock sensor connected to ignition/turbo pressure, so called APC on many cars. On modern engines you dont have ignition adjusted by vacuum anymore, thats made by the box for ignition. But the box need a sensor for micro knocking in the piston to quickly change the ingition and turbo pressure, and that does not exist on hayabusa boxes. Also in my opinion you need warmer sparks and might be a little low on fuel flow (thats probably what causes the strange melting of pistons). On the new engine you need to messure exhaust temperature, you dont want more than 920-930C, then you need to up the fuel.

Last summer I rebuilt a cylinder head on a Yamaha 200 TW because it swallowed a valve, a quick file over the piston and reassemble, and its been running good since.
I put after market jugs on my 1953 HD. The rear jug grenaded at a stop sign, the piston cam down tilted and blew the cases to pieces. I gathered the pieces, welded them all back together and machined the gasket surfaces. The old sand caste cases would not stop spider webbing, so i took them to be cryo tempered. Woked like a charm and after temper, and welding, I cryo tempered them again and never had a problem after.
What you labeled a blow off valve is actually a waste gate which relieves exhaust gas before it gets to the turbo’s turbine once the desired boost is created. Turbo is driven by exhaust and venting some keeps the turbo from making excess boost

Twenty three years later, it was nice to see how things really work. I had a 96 Blackbird that I felt was too slow. I had engine work done (port and polish) and some tuning and felt it was still too slow. I had the bike go on a diet (Dymag Carbon Fiber rims, all bolts other than weight bearing were replaced with aluminum and felt it was still too slow. I then had a turbo installed. Mark Moisan from American Turbo in Naples, FL had a kit for the blackbird. My bike was built to be a sleeper and if I wanted to run in high boost (Aerodyne Turbo) I had to mix VP Racing VP16 and 92 pump 50/50. If I was on low boost, pump gas was fine. One night, 10 miles past nowhere, at 160, the bike felt weird. I pulled the clutch in and 2 seconds later the whole bike shut off. I had the engine pulled. I am nowhere near the knowledge level of you or even capable of repairing it. When the engine was pulled, it did make the sounds you mentioned you didn't want to hear. When the engine was opened up, we learned that the biggest piece of piston left was about the size of a thumbnail. The piston exploded into pieces and the crank ripped into the cylinder wall. Your explanation of all the workings was very educational for me. Now I know what things are and can apply it to what happened to me. That bike had 280hp, 180lbs of torgue and was a little more than 400lbs wet. I miss that bike.

I'm not remotely into bikes and this was my first Bearded Mechanic video but I found it very interesting! Definite vibes of Craig from Dynotorque on the Driftworks channel. Mature dude who's been round the block and knows his stuff! Looking forward to more mechanicing 😁
Better tuning and oiling I would say. Thank kink near the turbo clearly translates to bad oiling up top too.
backpressure in the oil return line could increase the oil leaking into the intake side. All the oil sitting above the throttle body is just from the turbo
Hi there from Greece. We enjoy to watch and learn for bikes from your videos ! Great job !
My hope is you plan to do the bottom end as well, I'm concerned about bent rods. I wonder if you cant get a low compression flat top piston that could alleviate some of that detonation? Great video!!
Piston selection will make or break this one I think. It's a custom build so it might be easy to go wrong.
These guys deserve more of a following I just love how knowledge is shared patiently and not rushed.
I had a 442 hp turbo Hayabusa a few years ago. What a wonderful motorcycle. The top end charge was surreal. Love the video!
😂

You should definitely hit up donut media they also have a blown hayabusa I think it would be a great collab with you and donut media those guys are really cool
Yeah! i'd really love a video with Donut
I came mainly to give you that beef stick😂. I really miss you and Sean being in every video together.
I like Craig and Dan alone together more
Craig Jones of Doghouse motorcycle fame is brilliant, especially with building bobbers out of enfield bullets and he had ADHD with his work and fabricates hardtail frames for bobbers and the welds, snagging and finish is second to none. Top bloke too. 😊😊😊
So fun to see the Busa went to you guys. And get to know what the reason was it blew. Looking forward seeing it being rebuilt.
The Lime Green Monster needs a seat with springs that can also reposition rider more comfortably reaching ground and handlebars.
"Unfixable? You mean YOU can't fix it" - This man
no dude. it means it is not repairable. it may not even be rebuildable. tell us you dont know motors without telling us you dont know motors
Dude you are my favorite YTber, as I love motorbikes! I would love to see you recover a old MotorGuzzi. Keep up your enjoyable contente!
Craig,
You need to do a joint tear down with Eric from “ I do cars” he brings a cager engine and you bring a bike engine!
Dan can be the tear down supervisor?
Great carnage “ in the combustion palace “!!! episode.
As always stay safe and healthy.
Ron
oh no. Don't Collab with that dude. Can't stand him. Did Spite dirty.
Edit: still enjoy you're videos. I de-subbed from yammie a long time ago.
What happened ?
@@CyberChristhe fires him so spite could make his own channel. I think people too emotional about it. Let people collab with who they want. Can’t deny y’all have watched yammie moon before
Yeah, what happened? I’m not up on the tea lol
internet drama. a bunch of stuff wr only know very little about with people we know very little about
i dont care about the internet drama. i did not even know about it, i just find the dude very annoying .
Yammie noob... Gixerbrah and Bearded Mechanic
the motorcycle community really does cross any boundaries doesnt it?
Been there done that, I had three valves put in new guide seals and surfaced, put one new piston in WITH SAME RINGS , honed cylinder new gaskets 👍
Ultimate compliment---I'm not even into motorcycles yet never miss one of your episodes---NUFF SAID
This feels like watching the autopsy of a bodybuilder whose heart exploded after too much steroid use
Came for the YN trash talking train. Staying for Craig now.
Remember the exhaust side of that turbo needs inspected
I started watching Yammie but am glad because I never would have found this. Glad to see you Craig.
no surprise you got voted to look at this bike Craig, your a legend.. Enjoy your videos so much !! keep up the good work
Your start attempt sounds like you need a young priest and an old priest.😂 My suspicion is the cam chain tensioner seal leaked and owner cranked the tensioner down squeezing oil out of those top cam lobes.
Hi Craig, I have you watched all of The Noob's videos about this bike? It is a problem looking for a time and a place to happen. Send it back as it is now that you have stripped it down. He will make you the fall guy if and when anything else goes wrong. Your reputation is worth more than this nob head, seriously. I love your work and antics in the workshop and when out on a mission. Cheers
That was my first thought exactly. How long before he rides it into a Porsche then calls up Craig to do an interview about how he didnt fix it correctly.
@@Visoris Hi, have you watched the previous videos The Noob made about this bike? It is a disaster and am surprised Craig has taken it on. He should give it back exactly as is right now so no finger can be pointed at him at a later date.
That Hayabusa must have been a Porsche fan, nuked itself before Yammie could take another one out.
Woked like a charm and after temper, and welding, I cryo tempered them again and never had a problem after.
gross, i can't stand that dude.
Nobody can.
TyAu25 insecurity? i'm not the one coming to the defense of some idiot youtuber. check the mirror brah.
TyAu25 guess nobody’s allowed to dislike another person?
14:40 that's no blowoff, that's the wastegate! It doesn't go pff, it goes braaap, because it bypasses the exhaust by the turbo! :D
Man so many of your fans are NOT fans of Yammie. Self included.
What you labeled a blow off valve is actually a waste gate which relieves exhaust gas before it gets to the turbo’s turbine once the desired boost is created. Turbo is driven by exhaust and venting some keeps the turbo from making excess boost
Fantastic walkthrough of the engine and the issues you find. Very educational for me at least.
Super cool to see you working with other UA-cam content makers. You should help shadtree surgen fix a raffle bike next
Ok, I'll stick around if you just fixing the bike but if I see any more Yammie face I'm out.
edit- Ok, Sean turned up. 10/10 video now.
Didn't Sean do to Craig more or less what's Yammie's getting blamed for ?
Hope whatever agreement you have with noob is in writing.
stumbled across this channel, and watched 2 videos.. Early 100 Yamaha fun little a bike.. then TurboBusa fellin love straight away, love the style of vids and the bants between you guys
This is my new favorite channel. Honestly better than Bikes and beards garage. Love the selection of bikes and his knowledge of like every motorcycle
I stopped following yammie when he snaked spite. And put out that demoralizing video that is now long gone
Spite was THE reason I ever watched any of YN's stuff....
FYN, Long live Spite.
I don’t get involved with the drama bullcrap. I still watch Yammie as he still puts out decent content, although I really liked him and Spite’s chemistry together. I watch all of Spites’s stuff as well. I think Spite is better off doing his own content. He’ll definitely make more money doing his own thing…
He's also just an all around loser that acts like he knows how to ride till you actually see him ride and see he has no skill lol
Sorry, I am new to bikes and bike channels. What’s snaked spite?
@@Jump-n-smash Spite was on the Yammie Noob channel for a while and was kind of Yam’s right hand man. Then Yammie decided to kind of go into a different direction and he let Spite go in a controversial way. So now Spite has his own channel, Spites Corner is what it’s called.
Fixing broken bikes takes a lot of time, energy and mental effort. It's obvious you are very gifted as a mechanic, just like the fellow on the 2vintage channel.
Thanks. Yeah he has a good thing going.
Craig and 2 vintage are night and day different. He(2vintage) couldnt even co.e close to the abilities of Craig. Trust me, Im a Yamaha Technician and 2 vintage has so much to learn.
Craig is a tech, 2vintage a mechanic
@@4thdimensiontravels855 I unsubbed from 2vintage a while back. His new videos still pop up on my feed however. I strongly disagree with that fellows method of buying stuff with a blindfold on. I walk away scratching my head wondering how he could buy stuff that would be better suited for a junkyard heap.
ewwwww, Yammie Noob
Gixxer Braaaaah
Thanks
.
Nice selection of orchids. Very high quality.
Appreciate your videos.
Dont like the noob, but i dont mind seeing craig work on that bike
Bit sad to see so many whiny, entitled children here moaning...let the man fix the bike, take your bs disdain and drama elsewhere.
What in the actual F? Do all you mvloggers just live in the same neighborhood?!? Sounds like a pretty BA zipcode..
I praise the algorithm that it brought your channel to my feed. Literally was relaxing while watching this video. Very few times UA-cam does such a good match to my feed and you sir, just gained a loyal subscriber !
I don't ride motorcycles, but I really want to ride a motorcycle by watching your channel. My first bike will definitely be something made from Japan used and cheap. Thank you for sharing.
The yammie noob drama started way before the Spite incident, just do a search on here for yammie noob bike crash, never liked the guy or been subbed to him i think hes a prize w⚓️ but im not gonna stop watching Craig because of it as Craigs a good dude and probably knows nothing of the dramas.
Yeah his behavior surrounding the crash with the Porsche left a bad taste in my mouth. But Craig fixing a bike is Craig fixing a bike 👍
I stay way away from the dramas....
@@The_Bearded_Mechanic Yeah me too generally but it was hard with Yammie Noob as his 2 main drama's, Crash and Spite incident were all over youtube with a lot of the channels I do watch making videos on the subject's...
That’s the last content creator you should be working with. Usually support every thing Craig does. But this guy is a danger to himself and everyone on the road.
What has he done thats so dangerous since like 2019? The guy that was riding it when it blew up sure.
I think he's talking about Gixxerbrah lmao
Sorry but Yammie noob doesn’t deserve a place on this channel mate. Plz make sure this doesn’t happen again.
Holy crap just learned a lot about motorcycle engines and transmission I never knew before! Awesome!
Heck ya
the fact its only some top end work is an absolute score. need to get a reading on those cranks if you really want to be sure tho.
Not a fan of this noob guy. Please don’t promote him on your channel.
Yikes after what yam did to spike I'd be staying far away from that guy
