- @yammienoob can't seem to keep this bike from exploding. Now it's our turn to fix it! Thanks for the Busa, Mr. Noob!

I’m excited to see how this turns out, maybe if craig is lucky it will make as much power as my turbo Harley. Maybe we should race ?
I can make more power than that Harley by accident with this busa.
But can you handle the power ?
Sidenote: Accepting a barehanded beef stick, possibly pulled from a pocket, without hesitation is a true friendship.
A real challenge for Craig would be getting the OCC GEICO Bike over 100hp
Or getting it running for more than 20min at any hp lol
cool the air charge with meth injection to stop the melting
"Done gixxed its last brah."
Well said.

I haven't gone that far down the comments yet, but I didn't hear GixxerBrah mentioned at all on that one! lolololol XD
That dude is mad. It's amazing
Pure poetry
Came to say, there are a lot of us who don't have much like for yammienoob after the way he treated Spite. But Love what you do, I don't care who's bike your fixing, its just enjoyable to watch.
Same. Yammie made good content, but not into supporting that unnecessary immaturity. But will still gladly watch Craig fix this bike. My dislike for Yammie won't taint my love for The Bearded Mechanic
I kind of thought putting a lady in the hospital while riding uninsured then begging his viewers for money to pay the bills was just as classless. The guy is trash.

@@The_Bearded_Mechanic Completely agree! I’m a car guy, and you’re honestly the only bike content I watch on here.
This most concisely demonstrates why not only does “Everyone needs a Craig”, but Craig has a talent for explaining the complex into easy to understand terms. He should be teaching! Great job!
He is teaching. And he has about 100,000 students!
Limiting the scope of this project to just the top end is a gamble, but a brilliant one IMO. If he gets away with it, it will save tons of time, effort, and money. Hardly anyone would sink time into it without doing a total rebuild. You can't warranty it. I think he has a good shot. He might be doing a busa burnout 🔥🔥🔥 in the next episode.
Take a 2 week test ride Craig.
yup definitely teaching. good guy there.
My Craig is named Brian.
In my long career as an auto mechanic I exclusively worked on VWs for the first 28 years, when they began as aircooled. It was common to see them "swallow an exhaust valve" as in normal operation they required manual valve adjustments; being too tight as the valve stem stretched. I saved the heads of the broken off valves in a drawer in my toolbox and had 163 of them. I didn't see if the larger intakes or smaller exhaust valves was the one that snipped off. You brought back a lot of memories for me. Keep up the good work. Now in retirement at 76 years old I can just enjoy my 4 Honda motorcycles; my 2010 VFR 1200f, my 2014 CB1100, my 2012 CBR250r, and my 2023 Grom.
I took a near 7 year hiatus from acvw 😄
Just dipping back in for one final project.
I'm definitely more into motorcycles nowadays 😊
76 and you're on those bikes? I hope I'm as cool as you when I get to 76 🙏 I'm enjoying my 2023 S1000RR right now at 33.
That's one reason I use quality feeler gauges ,
I shoulda bought one of those CB1100s when I had a chance. Nice.
@@cjhickspe1399 I just had a nice ride on it yesterday. The '14 is all black and has a 6 speed transmission and has mag wheels where the '13s were red and silver. 5 speed trans and spoke wire wheels. One thing I really like about it is if you hold the throttle steady and go to downshift the engine revs are exactly correct for the next lower gear. Friday-Sunday in Leesburg Florida is the Leesburg Bikefest and I will be there ( I live 30 miles away)
Craig, you do some fine work. Far and away better than Noob deserves. Send his 'busa back exactly the way you found it. That person gets no respect from many in the community.
@14:39 - That's an External Wastegate, not a Blow Off Valve. The Wastegate controls the amount of boost you produce and prevents the turbo from spinning too fast, by allowing some of the exhaust gas to bypass the turbo. This is an external wastegate because it's outside the turbo, versus a traditional swingvalve wastegate often located in the turbine housing / outlet. Because that bypassed exhaust doesn't go thru the turbo (which quiets it down by stealing some of it's energy), guys often "divorce" it's outlet from the exhaust like this into it's own "dump tube", which causes the engine to be much louder whenever the wastegate is open. The Blow Off Valve (BOV) is on intake side, on the charge piping between the turbocharger and throttle body, and is what makes the loud "psssh" noise on shifts etc. It allows boost pressure to be vented to the atmosphere when the throttle body is closed, so that the pressure doesn't reverse direction and go back into the turbo, causing the compressor to stop suddenly and stall, leading to wear, and increasing turbo spool time when the throttle is opened again. If you vent the boost back into the intake instead (what most factory turbos do), it's instead called a bypass valve (BPV) and is much quieter.
Thank You! ^^Read this for a good explanation of Wastegate vs BOV^^^
Excellent explanation - I’ve wondered about this for years.
That was a mouthful and had to read it twice. Great explanation 👍
I liked my shorter version myself 🤣 although an hour later 😅😅
And “dump tube” = Screamer pipe 😎
21:39 That manual cam chain tensioner is the culprit I'm telling you right now.
Every knucklehead that gets one over tightens it. That leads to your chain guides quickly wearing out and shaving plastic into the oil pan. That clogs the oil pickup screen. Oil starvation would most likely be why your cams are worn, your connecting rods are tight on the big end (unless ypu meant "tight" as in not sloppy and worn out) and the pistons got hot and detonated.
The detonation can cause valves to break as well as typical piston damage.
Would that also explain the potential oiling issue on the cam shaft?
@@mattyrs4 of course
@@mostlymotorized What about the scoring on the piston heads? Are they on their way to detonating?
@@sana-cm7ocscoring is raised metal, which can glow red hot and yes, detonate.
On top of all that it looks like one pistons top ring butted together (22:26), not enough ring gap under high heat/load. The ring expands, butts together and then cracks the piston.
Sean got me crackin' up. Drove up from Tennessee, "Mainly to give you that beef stick!" Always great to see Shake N Bake back together.
Gixxer brah blowing that thing up is, to date, one of my favorite videos
Fixing broken bikes takes a lot of time, energy and mental effort. It's obvious you are very gifted as a mechanic, just like the fellow on the 2vintage channel.
Thanks. Yeah he has a good thing going.
Craig and 2 vintage are night and day different. He(2vintage) couldnt even co.e close to the abilities of Craig. Trust me, Im a Yamaha Technician and 2 vintage has so much to learn.
Craig is a tech, 2vintage a mechanic
You ended up with a turboed, supercharged and a rotary bike in your garage at once. That's probably not your normal week.
Loved the section at around the 13 minute mark, where you explain "where" everything is in the engine. Really informative. Can't wait for a part 2.
I love how you explain in detail all the parts and functions. For a new generation (or two) learning how to work on these bikes it's great. I personally love working on the vintage (old) bikes, but this pretty cool and I can't wait to see your progress.
I couldn't care less about the drama behind this bike. I'm here to watch Craig.

You know bearded mechanic isn’t the greatest mechanic
I know absolutely nothing about bikes but your content is outstanding and great to watch. Your enthusiasm and knowledge is fantastic. Glad i found your channel.
Dude you are easily one of the best mechanics I’ve ever seen on UA-cam. Your observations were on point and even the little things during disassembly like keeping your hand on the cam bridges so they don’t try and torque a weird way. The little note about sharp points on the piston especially on the exhaust side getting hot were chefs kiss. Earned a fan today.
You have a lot more faith than I do. I'm working on a motor that dropped a valve and I'm pulling the whole lower end apart for cleaning. All it takes is one tiny piece of piston in a crank lube hole and the whole bottom end will go boom. Good luck with it!
Dang it! Don't make me rethink it... You're not wrong.
@@The_Bearded_Mechanicother comments have said it, you’re 95% of the way there. The few hours opening and checking will be worth it! Both for us viewers and peace of mind.
@@adammcallister2260where’s Kevin!? 😂
@@adammcallister2260 yeah. doing it is 50% to be sure and 50% to uphold reputation as a meticulous mechanic. its not fun, its just hard and complicated... but its mostly consuming time, not money for parts.. so put in the work.. Just Do it! Do it.
An old mechanic friend gave me this advice long ago - every job will take 2x as long as you suspect. You can either spend the time now, or spend it later doing some of it over again, either way, you're going to have to spend that time.
Literally the best channel and the nicest guy on the internet!
Your videos are great. Perfect amount of information, about the bike and only humble chatter about your personal experiences. The video edits are quick and clean and the added comedy in the post are great!
So interesting when you explained each section of the engine. Much appreciated.
Tell Sean he should have grabbed the $15K for that chopper when his neighbor offered it.
i think he might still give it to him but he wants it fixed first
Lmao I think he tells himself that enough in the mirror 😂
That's for sure
He makes much more off the content and can sell it later anyway
Only doing the top end is NOT recommended. You're already into it this far, just pull the bottom end down and clean up all the metal that got trapped in the bearings and crank. Doing it your way guarantees you will be doing it again, with the probability that it will be way more expensive the next time. Your milage may vary.
I would definitely pull apart the bottom to inspect rod bearings main bearings etc just in case, as theires nothing worse than rebuilding the top end and the bottom end needs repair after starting the engine. P.S I'm not a fan of Yammie Noob for how he treated Spite but I'm here for the Busa rebuild.
Not a fan of him either, but I do like turbo Busas.

LOVE the RE5. Blew up my honda back in 88 on a roadtrip in Seguin Texas. Costed the Honda in to a local motorcycle dealership and it was done for. They had a beautiful RE5 sitting on the floor so I traded them on the spot. Wound up roadtripping that Suzuki across all of Texas (just stopping wherever and living out of a tent) for the next 6 months. Things you HAVE to know - it is a 2 stroke - the oil goes in a separate tank on the right hand side of the bike. If it has run without 2 stroke oil, it will likely have burned rotor tips & will need to replace them. Flush the coolant. Treat it like an old Suzuki Waterbuffalo in every way but the motor. It is a blast.
holy moly man that engine breakdown and explanation of all the parts was awesome and genuinely helped me

Hi there from Greece. We enjoy to watch and learn for bikes from your videos ! Great job !
14:41 in.. thats a Wastegate, it bypasses exhaust gases which helps to maintain a set boost pressure by slowing down the turbine wheel.. a blow off valve is on the boosted side of the turbo system and not on the hotside/exhaust side of the turbo.
Not enough ring end gap is why the lands blew outta that other piston. Ring closes up gap, ring can't expand out anymore so it wants to go sideways and blows out the ring land. More end gap on turbski motors, especially non intercooled.

Oil filter cutting tool was one of my all time best purchases 😅. Love your channel!
My hope is you plan to do the bottom end as well, I'm concerned about bent rods. I wonder if you cant get a low compression flat top piston that could alleviate some of that detonation? Great video!!
Piston selection will make or break this one I think. It's a custom build so it might be easy to go wrong.
Big bag of Oil Absorb to grab by handfulls put over oil on floor to grind down with foot and sweep away was always handy for me.
These guys deserve more of a following I just love how knowledge is shared patiently and not rushed.
Hey Craig, I think that the boost pressure for the intake valves caused the valve to float. Maybe replace the intake valve springs with harder ones and get those valve shims in spec! I'd say that you could just get away with rebilding it without splitting the cases and just changing the oil filter with a ring magnet after some hundred miles to fully get the metal bits out of the engine. Looking forward to the series :D

no dude. it means it is not repairable. it may not even be rebuildable. tell us you dont know motors without telling us you dont know motors
@@maddog7999no idea what busa parts go for. But the amount of machine time to fix what I've seen so far up to the 25min mark. Hi Craig. The broken valve/piston is one thing but the other broken piston is another. Make sure you have enough ring end gap for a boosted application. It will be considerably wider than non boosted. Should be an absolute rocket when you get it done.
Im so happy your channel has been a huge success, Craig. Congrats man.
Better tuning and oiling I would say. Thank kink near the turbo clearly translates to bad oiling up top too.
backpressure in the oil return line could increase the oil leaking into the intake side. All the oil sitting above the throttle body is just from the turbo
Not a fan of that noob guy.
Me neither but he hooked our boy up with a project so he can be but so bad 🤷♂️
I 2nd and 3rd that
Yeah no kidding just after list after list after list and opinions😂
Know it all arrogance drives me nuts
I didn't see this coming at all!!!!
Well, the broken valve was one thing, but the other broken piston speaks to not having enough ring end gap for use in a boosted application - something to keep in mind in the rebuild. I agree that lower comp pistons and a better tune (maybe a boost specific cam too?) will go a long way to making this rocket actually reliable.
Hopefully helpful hint. Exhaust pipe cutter to open your oil filters. I have the mac ratcheting one... but any Amazon/harbor freight tool will work just aswell. Good vids.
Came for the YN trash talking train. Staying for Craig now.
That Hayabusa must have been a Porsche fan, nuked itself before Yammie could take another one out.
Hey a great way to open a canister oil filter like that is a pipe cutter. Runs little cutting discs around the edge and can cut the top ring off a filter clean, no debris. They make both direct-pressure versions (couple of big cutting discs) or chain cutter versions (lots of small cutting discs). Great tool to have around a shop.
Craig, you rock... You're about to tear into the biggest, most powerful motorcycle ever built... Obviously, it needs a complete top end rebuild and most certainty a bottom end rebuild as well. Can't wait to see it...
Remember the exhaust side of that turbo needs inspected

Your start attempt sounds like you need a young priest and an old priest.😂 My suspicion is the cam chain tensioner seal leaked and owner cranked the tensioner down squeezing oil out of those top cam lobes.
I love working on these type motorcycle engines and transmission because it's basically a Itty bitty compact car..can be extremely reliable and once you're used to them it's quite easy to repair.
Fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
ewwwww, Yammie Noob
What you called a blow off valve is actually the waste gate which expells exhaust to control how much boost the turbo makes.😊

edit- Ok, Sean turned up. 10/10 video now.
Didn't Sean do to Craig more or less what's Yammie's getting blamed for ?
Twenty three years later, it was nice to see how things really work. I had a 96 Blackbird that I felt was too slow. I had engine work done (port and polish) and some tuning and felt it was still too slow. I had the bike go on a diet (Dymag Carbon Fiber rims, all bolts other than weight bearing were replaced with aluminum and felt it was still too slow. I then had a turbo installed. Mark Moisan from American Turbo in Naples, FL had a kit for the blackbird. My bike was built to be a sleeper and if I wanted to run in high boost (Aerodyne Turbo) I had to mix VP Racing VP16 and 92 pump 50/50. If I was on low boost, pump gas was fine.
One night, 10 miles past nowhere, at 160, the bike felt weird. I pulled the clutch in and 2 seconds later the whole bike shut off. I had the engine pulled. I am nowhere near the knowledge level of you or even capable of repairing it. When the engine was pulled, it did make the sounds you mentioned you didn't want to hear. When the engine was opened up, we learned that the biggest piece of piston left was about the size of a thumbnail. The piston exploded into pieces and the crank ripped into the cylinder wall.
Your explanation of all the workings was very educational for me. Now I know what things are and can apply it to what happened to me. That bike had 280hp, 180lbs of torgue and was a little more than 400lbs wet. I miss that bike.
Craig Jones of Doghouse motorcycle fame is brilliant, especially with building bobbers out of enfield bullets and he had ADHD with his work and fabricates hardtail frames for bobbers and the welds, snagging and finish is second to none. Top bloke too. 😊😊😊

I put after market jugs on my 1953 HD. The rear jug grenaded at a stop sign, the piston cam down tilted and blew the cases to pieces.
