The M1s armor is arranged to provide max protection sitting at ~+8 up angle (like on the reverse slope) where the turret ring is almost impossible to hit. IRL boresight and dispersion is no where near good enough to hit a specific weak point at anything but point blank.

The right turret cheek (where the gunner's sight and gunner + commander are) is easier to pen than the left cheek (where the loader is). This is particularly noticeable when shooting at the cheeks of the base M1, base M1A1, and IPM1 (should be M1IP but Gaijin) with 3BM42 for instance.

The cheeks absorb every apfsds just because the shell is not angled in the direction of the cheek, if you shoot in that way almost every top tier shell gets inti
Same goes for Leopard 2s. Thats why its designed to be struck on a 60 degree frontal arc for all tanks.

The gunner side cheek has flatter armor and makes it easier to pen than the loader side
The cheeks are basically the sponge part of the tank with it's depleted uranium armor
Fun fact, Russian has the best ground atgm who can pen top tier MBT's turret in 9.7, thanks gaijin
Don’t forget about Khrizantema on 9.3. With radar, lots of ATGM with 1200 pen. It’s a beast I can easily take to 11.7

It's almost like determining a vehicle's BR. rating based on player statistics isn't a good idea...
I have an idea for another experiment: try to oneshot char 2c, but dont shoot in the ammo, try to kill the crew with ohne aphe/apcbc shot. Use guns like the 85mm, 88mm, 90mm, ...
At the end, use guns like 128mm or 152mm

Turret ring is just the larger issue for the tank than anything else sadly. every other tank's ring is barely there, so you have to aim for their breech or lower glacis or the sides. In reality, the ring is pretty low on them.
Hence many may see the US in top tier as useless with such a large weakspot.
I think they should change the aim system to make it more Realistic use the Gunner Heat PC Type of aim Then everyone would see how OP the Abrams is but because we have this type of aim style in Warthunder its extremely easy to aim when IRL its not that easy

Love how they nerfed the ADATS missile into not being able to pen tanks like it could and still havent reclassed it as SPAA like its supposed to be.
I think they should add a New Warthunder sim mode where your aiming system is the same as Gunner Heat PC it would make the game WAY WAY WAY more realistic not TO mention add Ballistic Computers to guide your shot while moving

You didn´t test the most important angle which makes the abrams cheeks trash. When you slightly shoot them from the side, reducing the angle, those cheeks become a gaping w****.

Aren’t the Abrams cheeks asymmetrical when you look above, you can kind of see it you know, but from the front, you can’t really see it.

Different Abrams have different types of armour generation for example 3bm60 can penetrate the cheeks of m1a1 but it can't penetrate the cheeks of m1a2

Words can’t describe how much I agree with you brother. Every time I boot up War Thunder I want to play my top tier Abrams tanks but I can’t because they have styrofoam for armor.
Knowing War Thunder though they probably won’t model it correctly and it will only be a very minor buff to protection.

I'm really confused about the design choices in western tanks. If leopard 2a6 and abrams cheeck armor is so powerful why did they only add them to the turret area? Why not cover more of the tank with this kind of design?
