Four of the RAF’s new F-35B jets have returned to the UK after a two-month exercise in Cyprus. During their time on the island, the Lightnings flew their first operational missions over Iraq and Syria. Just before they left Akrotiri, Simon Newton spoke to the Wing Commander John Butcher, the officer in charge of 617 Squadron, about what it is like to fly the world’s most advanced warplane.

@@rpm1796 the argument is air superiority is just about information. The F35 denies it to the enemy via stealth and picks it up better than the enemy by it sensors. That make sit a boss CAP aircraft.
Once we've adapted the meteor it has the weapon advantage too.

I would take a f35 over a f22 ANY day.
And the F35 will wax the floor against the F22 any day of the week.
But why?
In the 1950’s everything was thought to center around speed. Even an f104 Starfighter (1958) can maintain supersonic flight without afterburners.
In the 29 dogfight kills during desert storm (1991), max speeds seen by fighters were Mach 1
Now of course the f22 has award winning kinetic performance, no doubt about it. From a raw performance point of view, the f22 really is impressive.
However, that performance is not going to rack up or increase kills in the battle theatre.
Tops on this list is that due to budget cuts, the f22 lacks “passive” systems to track aircraft. By “passive” we mean receiver only (non radar being sent out). This is where the f35 excels right now, and is a significant shortcoming of the f22.
Computer processing:
The f22 in its debut had a very good computer system. It is rated at 700 MIPS (700 million instructions per second).
There was plans to future upgrade the f22 with a 2000 mips processor. But the CPU used on the f22 is now long out of production.
But, remember Moore’s law in computing? Every 2 years we see computing power near doubling. While this doubling every two years don’t sound like much?
Well, place one grain of rice on the first square on a chess board. On the next square, place 2 grains of rice. And on the next square place 4 (so we have a total of 7 grains of rice).
Do the above for 64 squares. You wind up with 1 billion grains of rice by the 40th square. By the 64th square, you actually need 210 billion tons (not grains, but tons) of rice! That amount of rice would cover ALL of India with about 3 feet of rice!
The above means that the f22 has a really poor computer.
For comparison, a low cost budget smart phone with a snapdragon processor? Well, one CPU core is rated for 1400 MIPS. But you have 4 of them!!! (All in that $90 smartphone).
So, that smartphone has
5600 MIPS
F22 = 700 MIPS.
So, your cheapo smart phone has EIGHT times the computer power of the f22.
The F35 uses RISC based CPU’s built around IBM’s power PC chips. They are the same architecture and chips used at the Lawrence Livermore atomic labs to run computer atomic bomb simulations. And all of IBM’S advanced Artificial Intelligence systems also use this chip set from IBM.
Upgrades for the F35 central computer are to be rolled out next year - they will increase the computer power of the f35 by a WHOPPER 25 times (over what the f35 has now!!! And what the F35 ALREADY has is VERY good!!!).
Not only does the f22 lack computer power, but it also lacks high speed networking.
While a good many new fighter jets have passive (IRST) systems, they are mechanical scanned (a rotating mirror sends the input light and directs it to a sensor). Such sensors will tell you a fighter is say 35 degrees off the front of your jet. But you don’t know the speed, direction etc. And those systems have limited coverage (only front/forward looking for the jet).
You need speed, direction, and altitude to generate a weapons lock.
With 3 or more f35’s in the area, then just like 3 compass points or lines on a map, you can with computers triangle the location of the target. (You need 3 or more inputs).
Toss in a BIG dose of computer power?
Toss in some really amazing network commutation between the jets?
Well, you now get x,y,z position of that target. And if you do this over and over, then you now get a new set of x,y,z and thus compare it to the last set of data. Now you have the REALLY valuable information of speed and direction of that enemy. And you doing this WITHOUT radar to give yourself away.
And even MORE important is you need to be able to feed that data into the computers to generate a weapons grade solution.
F35 can use radar, DAS (which is IRST) or use the targeting pod on the front (which is also an IRST + targeting system for air to ground).
However, you have NOT turned on your radar to give yourself away.
So, 3 F35’s approaching some f22’s will:
See, track, display and build weapons grade firing solitons against the f22’s.
And all of this will occur without radar.
The f22?
Blind as a bat.
It will not see, track or be able to deploy its weapons on the F35.
The f35 will simple fire away and shoot down those f22’s like fish in a barrel.
The f22 on board systems are outdated.
And what makes the f35 so deadly is its software. A phone without software is of little use. With software, it becomes near magic.
So what else does the F35 do with all that computing power?
Well, the DAS system (distributed Aperture system) is 6 high resolution high quality solid state cameras mounted around the F35. So, like a graphics card in reverse to make a 3d game? Well, this system takes that input, and provides the pilot with 360 views. It allows the pilot to look right thought the floor (and that is a HUGE blind spot for fighter pilots).
So, you put computers to work on those input cameras. The computers will detected mortar fire on the ground, or even when a tank is firing its gun! The computers can process the camera input in real time. Lockheed states that the F35 can detect tank and mortal fire on the ground at “considerable” distance. So, now the F35 can slew it weapons towards those ground targets.
And the computers also do full time real tracking of aircraft in all directions with this system. And go watch videos of HOW amazing zoom is on a distal camera - what the F35 has is even better and MORE sensitive.
In fact, the DAS tracking system will allow the F35 to compute and give a firing solution for a jet following it from the rear. That’s because unlike the f22, the F35 is not limited to JUST using radar for a firing solution. So, to fire at a jet following you requires rear facing radar! (But not with the F35).
So, radar in most jets is required for a firing solution. When the missile leaves the rails, it is NOT the missile that navigates to the target, but the fighter provides computers and radar that manages the first part of the missile flight. When the missile gets close to the target then the missile own radar and tracking takes over.
And keep in mind that even during war games, the instant you turn on your radar is the instant you just turned your jet into a HUGE giant lighthouse of a target - stealth will not help so much. Look at me, I am here! Come and follow my powerful radar beam right to me!!! Stealth or not - you just given yourself away.
The air battle theatre is now becoming like submarine warfare. Run silent - don’t give yourself away.
And the F35 as even more tricks.
The f35 also has a door that opens, and it can spool out a mini drone at the end of a cable. Again, with computers, that deployed drone (at the end of a cable) can make fake radar signals. (Even fake a squadron of jets - even of different types). And this deployable drone can even become what we call a “honey pot”. If all of the amazing counter measures of the F35 fail, then the drone can give off a radar signal for the missile to hit the drone at the end of the cable and NOT the f35!
Right now? The f22 is hopelessly outgunned and outclassed by the F35.
The f22 has next to no means to see, find, track and MOST important generate a kill solution to shoot down the f35.
As much as I love the f22?
It don’t stand one hope of a chance to engage the f35.
@@Albertkallal That was actually a really interesting read, thank you :) One thing I find really amazing is if we translate what you say into the compatibility of the f-35 with other RAF assets e.g. Typhoon which from what I've read is the stealthiest (clean config) 4th Gen around allowing it to operate closer to the front, and send/receive data via link 16 with the f-35, then the typhoon becomes the weapons carrier due to it's large payload which can fire from longer ranges using meteor/latest brimstone variant etc whilst the f-35 does all the targeting magic. Pretty lethal combo. I've heard the f-22/typhoon combo is pretty nuts as well from a few exercises. Put all 3 together plus land/ship based radar/missile capability + AWACS and it starts getting unbelievable. I'd hate to be the one coding all that software haha.

I was on a school trip in the Lake District, we were canoeing across a lake when we heard this sound in the distance, then two of these came over the hill, flew past us only a few hundred feet above. Even though I knew we were on the same side it was still terrifying due to the speed and noise. God knows how scary it must be for anyone who’s seen as an enemy to these machines
Are you British or a fellow American? Just curious. The most insane thing I've ever seen is the original F117 and B2 flying. I was in PE class in highschool and one of each flew over for an air show here at the local airport. They both looked like they were from outer space in person

I think adversaries dont realise so many american and british pilots have combat experience in hostile airspace and how much experiencing that pressure counts

UK was instrumental in the development of the DFLCS for JSF-B with the VAAC Harrier and X-35 test program, with Rolls Royce making the lift fan. They've been in on it from the ground level as partners with the US.
It's a joint development with the UK involved lad.
The F-35 is not just American you know, from day one the UK was part of the YF-35 project, the F-35 is basically a UK - US Designed and built jet, it was after the YF-35 won the contracted then other's cam in to the project.
This is the UK's technology.

As a Brit it's a privelege to see our great pilots taking to the skies and defending our allied nations in such an aircraft. The F-35B compliments our Typhoon aircraft to give us a well rounded defense/attack capability and we are grateful to the US for sharing such technology with the UK.
As far as I'm concerned, you guys are entitled to anything and everything we have. We're family and I wouldn't have it differently.

Seems the world's main response so far is to dream up imaginary paper weapons to combat it. In the meantime this is real and in their face. It's a massive upgrade. I wouldn't want to be flying for the red team at the moment.
Red team has also been upgrading, gradually replacing terrible obsolete fighters with mediocre to okay new fighters. This may not seem like much of a worry, but keep in mind these are large quantities. As good as the F-35 is, it still has a very limited weapons load and can only engage small numbers of hostiles. Ideally stealth fighters should be backed up with high end balanced fighters with large external weapons stores. Fortunately the UK has Typhoons to do just that.

The US also has around 3x as many fighter jets that are more advanced
Stu Bur - Russia isn't producing a lot of fighters and isn't going to because they can't afford to. Right now Russia only has around 800 fighters (Mig 29, Mig 35, Su 30, Su 35). I'm not sure how many fighters the UK Air Force and Navy has, but the US has ordered around 2,000 F-35s! Right now the US has around 190 F-22s, 451 F-15 C and E models, 943 F-16's, 200 F-35A, 57 F-35B, 21 F-35C, 512 F-18 Super Hornets, 540 F-18's. That's almost 3,000 active fighters that the US has right now that can be used. Even when the F-35 fleet has replaced the F-16's and the F-18's (not the Super Hornets), the US will still have a LOT more fighters than Russia could hope to have..
@@mississippirebel1409 Red team includes more than Just Russia. Both Russia and China have recently placed large orders for new fighters. The plans for the USAF are not firm orders, only about 500 F-35 are under firm order so far for example and even getting up to that number is going to take years. There is also the concern that Red team will likely not engage the USA directly but instead attack allies who are far less capable of self defense. This then could hurt US interests in various ways.

Above figures are max takeoff - empty weight.
Even if you take max combat loads, the F35 is certainly at the top here, not “limited”.
What legacy fighter are you suggesting that has better payloads? In addtion, the F35 has huge internal fuel loads, so the wing pylons are now avaiable for EVEN MORE weapons.

Well,with fighter jets, you ALWAYS, but near ALWAYS ALWAYS see extra fuel tanks. The are so small as to be use-less.

@@Albertkallal they wanted to save money using a single module for both wings. They shot themselves in the foot with that because they had to place the air intake for the vertical takeoff in the front for that reason. That cause a lot of safety issue, the first one being hot air from the jet entering in the front when landing and causing the engine to stall.

Yes, you even see Harriers tend to rather strong cut their power when landing on ship decks. Think of when you turn on a kitchen faucet. The water streams down, and when it hits the bottom, it spreads out. So a layer of hot air starts to "build up" on the deck. If the engines digest this hot air, then you can get a compressor stall, and the hotter air also has less O2. Both are bad.
The Harrier has a 150 gallon water tank on board. This water injection is turned on during hover. However, the tank only allows for 90 seconds of hover. At air shows, we have seen Harriers hover for say 3 even 4 minutes. They can do this if the weather is not too hot, and of course they have no weapons and VERY light fuel loads. edit: The water inject system keeps the Harrier engine from overheating, but also increases thrust of the engine since the water makes the air "more" dense when vaporized, and thus increases thrust. But that 150 gallons runs out after 90 seconds.
The F35 is far better in this regards. First up, the cold air fan is pushing down a huge amount of wash that mixes in with the rear (hot) down thrust. Lockheed states that the Harrier when landing on cement can cause such rapid changes, that some bits can actually explode. Lockheed engineers state that the F35 actually puts down less heat (hot spots) then the Harrier and actually prevents hits deck overheating issue. So while decks should have heat treatment, the F35 is claimed by Lockheed to be less harm and heat on decks then is the Harrier.
The other VERY but VERY significant issue is that behind the lift fan, an 2nd set of doors open to pull air from the top of the jet. And the front intakes are restricted (there are doors in the front intakes that close own air flow)
So, you see the F35 do in most cases a softer landing then Harriers, since the F35 is pulling most of the cold air from the top of the jet, not the front like the Harrier.
The Boeing design while very interesting would have been a real challenge to deal with the hot air. The F35 along with the Rolls Royce designed and built lift fan is really the way to go. And Rolls Royce has and had 40+ years of experience with the Harrier - so they were the best choice to get involved in the F35 VSTOL systems.
The often quoted "myth" about the F35 is how it is oh so much harder and throws down more hot spots on ship decks. It is another one of MANY false rumors we read about the F35 on a near daily basis.

The lift fan was the way to go, and one BIG reason was the lifting ability. All VSTOL jets have LIMITED payloads, and tend not to be able to fly fast. The F35 and the lift fan is a game changer. The HMS Q would be really hampered with ANYTHING else then the amazing Rolls Royce lift fan system.
It allows about double the payload of the Harrier.
It gets even better!!!
We all know and love the Harrier, but the ocean floor it littered with un-used bombs, since the Harrier often has to dump fuel, and even weapons before landing on a ship.
The F35? Well, bombs are expensive now, so you can't have a system that assumes you can just throw away some missiles or bombs to land on a ship.
A f18 landing on a USA super carrier is rated for 4,000 lbs return stores. If payloads are over 4,000 lbs, then the F18 has to dump fuel, and if they are still not below the 4,000 lbs "stores", then they have to start dumping weapons into the ocean.
MOST amazing? Well the F35B model on a vertical landing is rated for 5,000 lbs (already better then a f18 on a USA super carrier using a cable trap). However, on the HMS Q, they are going to use rolling landings for the F35 B, this will add an additional 2,000 lbs of return stores (for a VERY good world class rating of 7,000 lbs total return stores (fuel + weapons).
The result of this means they can add more fuel (or weapons) to the F35 B for each mission, and do not have to SUPER EXACT match the payloads to the given mission. This will increase mission "stay on time", and just over all general force projection since they are now free to load up the F35 with lots of fuel and weapons as they please. The F35 B is really the first VSTOL fighter jet without the compromises of such past jets. So untreated roads, small ships, farmers barns.
Question:
How does a nation plan a defense strategy against the F35 B being able to be a stealth nuclear bomber, and being able to fly and be deployed even without long runways? It is impossible to to plan a counter strategy against stealth nuclear bombers that don't need conventional runways. Such a fighter can still be launched without conventional runways. It is thus the ultimate doomsday stealth able nuclear bomber. VSTOL is near impossible to plan against, but a supersonic stealth bomber with nuclear abilities is the worst nightmare of any military planner.

@The Vengeance of Diana If the F16 still runs the show why does the F-35 have a 20/1 Kill/Loss ratio in exercises againt other NATO planes? In a combat situation the F16 barely stands a chance against the F-35. The F16 lacks stealth and technology, the F35s DAS System alone is superior to anything the F16 has in both air-air and air-ground capabilities. The F-35 also has the EOTS Electro-Optical Targeting System and OECM Offensive Countermeassures. The F-16 lacks all these features, even the F-22 lacks behind when it comes to sensors.

Modern harrier in my eyes
It's a fitting tribute, for sure. I'll be sad when I see the inevitable story of the last AV-8B being retired by the U.S. I remember being absolutely fascinated by them as a kid when they had a show at a US Army base near where I grew up (they hosted equipment from all different branches for a public display).
This aircraft is primarily a night fighter. They train during the day though.

YoloPixels Probably had a bit of cashflow coming in from assisting Lockheed Martin in the design and manufacture - allies have helped out immensely too!
UK laid down much of the DFLCS testing in the VAAC Harrier, provided X-35 test pilots, and manufactures critical systems for the JSF-B, including the Rolls Royce lift fan.

These planes are coming in slow though. I think we get just 7 this year to add to what we already got
I only learned recently that the largest sapphire is no a jewelry gem stone, or even a watch face. It's a very thin layer on a stealth jets canopy. Transparent to light and infrared but opaque and reflective to radar. The sapphire is synthetic and applied as an ion bath onto the canopy in a special vacuum chamber. Sapphire is extremely abrasion resistant. Synthetic sapphire currently used for smart phone camera lenses and are starting to be made into entire display front glass for high end smart phones.
They deserve so much more for the what they get

While the F-22 is an AWESOME aircraft and is the best at what it does, it is mainly a one trick pony in the fact that it was designed and built for one reason and that is for air superiority! When the US built the F-22 there were restrictions and the program had all the money it need for R/D. The F-35 on the other hand can perform just about every kind of mission you can think off. The F-35 is by far the most capable strike fighter in the world.
So in other words, if you are a pilot and want to get into the action, then fly the F-35 because it will be used a lot more because it can do every kind of mission.

Damn that was well said explanation of f35b and some capabilities not some reporter trying to trash talk f35. People now are starting to understand what it's about.. as of February all software update has been done now giving f35 it's full flight controls and combat abilities. All that talk it couldn't turn slow climb lol never had it's full capable software. Turns were restricted to 7gs all kinds of stuff but now it's shine... God bless the 🇺🇸🇬🇧.

It costs pretty much the same as a Eurofighter Typhoon.
How do you figure that? It's equivalent to fourth generation platforms in cost and that will only get cheaper. Especially with commonality of parts helping any logistics train. Plus, you don't have to buy a lot of other plane types for each strike package, which means it saves money.

One question that woke me up last night. The vision from the F-35 cockpit. Isn't it more obscured by the bars in front and the bump behind? (Sorry, not a native speaker) The F-16 has a bubble💧canopy which, i assume, gives the pilot more visibility. Is this indeed the case? I wonder how pilots react to this.
The F-35 pilot can see through the aircraft, so canopy visibility is much less important. The front facing canopy gives more favourable aerodynamics compared to a bubble cockpit.
Like the prior comment, the f35 could have cardboard applied to the windscreen to completely block the view from inside with the naked eye. Good thing the pilots don’t rely on their naked eyes, they can literally look down and see what is under the f35. The hmd is on another level.

The brits had just as much to do with the F-35b, if not more, than its parent US manufacturer. For example, the short or vertical take off and landing system, which the entire F-35 program was built around, was based on proven British (and some degree Russian) technology.

@@roblockhart6104 Incorrect. Lockheed holds the patent for the lift fan/clutch/shaft design. Rolls Royce participated in the development with a number of other manufacturers. The swivel nozzle is a refinement of the one that was on the Convair 200. Flight test data was purchased from Yakovlev but the 141 utilized a different lift system. The Harrier's Pegasus utilized a completely different and inferior design - direct lift - as did the X-32.

@@magecraft2 though it might not be relevant, stealth is often about targeting rather than spotting. A burst of data will tell people your there but not allow them to shoot a missile at you.
The f35 has directional antennas, and computers reduce the signal strength. And with extra computer power the data is compressed. So it does everything it can to reduce "EM" out out. However foes against the f35 are attempting to cook up means to detect such communication. So such communication can give away that stealth jets are lurking in the air battle theatre.
Albertkallal - That kind of technology is a long ways off and still wouldn't be able to give the enemy a chance to actually track and lock on to the F-35/F-22. All it might be able to do is to warn the enemy tha there might be a stealth aircraft in an area (a large area).

Israel proved that this bird is more than capable.
The helmet needs to be much lighter and more compact for pilot safety and comfort. Some stabilization for the neck might be helpful too. A large and heavy helmet is a potentially life threatening hazard if they ever need to eject. Pilot size and weight guidelines were made more strict because of this helmet, in order to mitigate the potential hazard.
Frankly, I'd be more worried about my safety if I wasn't wearing it.
The weight and height restrictions in regards to ejection seat have been removed. They re-worked the ejection profile, and thus restrictions are now removed.
The helmet removes a huge hodge podge of dash instruments and also removes the hud. Furthermore, at night, most pilots have to wear night googles (over one eye - and switching to look at the dash is a huge pain. With F35 - no hud required, nor no night goggles - it all built in. Overall, you get far better pilot comfort and better SAS (situational awareness).
I think despite the looks, the Gen 3 helmets aren't any heavier than the old helmets. They are also custom made to each pilot's head shape, so they should 'feel' light.
That's an old myth. Except for the very frailest (female) pilots, the helmet is no hazard.
Carbon fiber construction is very lightweight. Helmet inserts are custom-made for each pilot so they get a snug fit with minimal helmet-cueing deviation from G.

The RR alternative engine has been shelved but RR did get the contract for primary maintenance on UK PW engines on behalf of PW.

Rolls Royce is also the primary contractor and designer of the lift fan system. After all, who the heck has 50+ years of VSTOL know how? Why of course Rolls Royce. So, that contribution to the F35 model makes Rolls Royce a primary contractor for the F35 B model.
And look what the Rolls Royce Spey did for the Phantom: Delayed it by years, made it much more expensive and made it slower. Even though the Spey has more power than the J-79, modifications to the airframe necessary to allow it to accept the larger Spey added more than enough drag to eat up the extra power. The Brits would have been much better off just accepting American engines in their American jet.
@@Mishn0 Putting the Rolls-Royce Spey turbofan into the Phantom wasn’t a bad idea: it provided more power, for less fuel (especially at low level), got rid of the distinctive smoke trails, and generally made the UK Phantom a quicker, slicker, longer-ranged beast especially at subsonic speeds (where fighters spend pretty much all their time).
Pilots they always talk up what ever they are currently flying as the best they've ever experienced.

for example, it has a door that opens, and it spools out a drone at the end of a cable. This device can spoof radar, and with computing power can actually fake radar images (it can even fake a squad of fighters). And if all the counter measures fail, and a incoming missile is about to hit? Well, the drone then becomes what we call a "honey pot", and the incoming missile hits the drone at the end of the cable and not the F35. So, no lighter, but it has every other feature and option you can dream up, and some of the classified features are even more amazing!

F-35B cost continues to go down as the irders go up. Typhoon doesn't even have the Captor E AESA, maybe because working with F-35s makes it unnecessary.

I'm a bit concerned for the RAF acquiring 'Fat Amy'. She's not stealthy in profile, hence the nickname. She can't go far without refueling. She's unstable in Mach 1+ regimes. The 35yo F-16 flies circles around her still in anything but BVR engagements. Russian IR targetting loves that big tail nozzle. She's a sitting duck for anything with vectored thrust. Several other factoids out there, but they are still classified (so I am told.).

the problem with the f-35/f-22 is how new the technology is when radar even jet fighters first became a thing it took decades in order to get the perfect recipe and perfect the idea of a fighter "jet". These planes are so new and the technology is so new that they are bound to get to a point where they don't know how to implement it into the current demands of the active military. America has always wanted to take a first step in improving the tech knowing that it will take years for everything else to catch up to the needs of these aircraft its hard to see the purpose or reason for these new jets but I think giving it some time and possibly a new threat will show its true power and reason for being created, people need to remember that its not like KSP where you can test a new variant it takes years of programming, testing, and engineering in order to get these planes/carriers off the ground

I will need to look into it more, usually though military contracts are quite convoluted on the internet as design - implementation changes a hell of a lot and the old information is ran as the know, when politics gets into it that doesnt help like the HMS QE is set to carry 18 F-35 however the max load online is between 42 - 50 exact figures aren't fully aware as commitment to purchase is totally different to how the program is distributed such as: What model, will they be launched from ski ramp, straight or would you want vertical take off or would the RAF be in main command of the jet and get to choose the loadouts for majority of the aircraft and stations?
@@flaggnerd The Italian are assembling some, the Japanese some. Most in the US of course. The UK is building 15% of the parts. Lockheed is the prime, but BAE for example is building more than 10% of it (some of which is BAE in the US). Defence industries are so intergrated now.

I hope this Brit Pilot has opened eyes of the EF, Typhoon lovers. In the hands of a Harrier pilot there’s no way you can tell me he’d lose to an EF, Rafale or even latest Russian jets. Why? Because the UK F-35 has STOVL & massive thrust vectoring that would be deadly in head to head dogfighting.

Nobody is trying to get into WVR of each other nowadays even in Typhoons vs Flankers. That fight is all about BVR missile exchange, where the Meteor really makes the Flanker be very careful using maximum stand-off, which is hard because the Typhoon has a very small frontal RCS and world class acceleration into supersonic regime.
Flankers must rely on countermeasures if they gets MAWS at all during missile terminal stage.
After that, they're going to bug out if anyone survives because nobody wants to close into helmet-cued ASRAAM range, just as Typhoons don't want to close into helmet-cued R-73 range.
F-35 totally changes this with unobserved approaches with kinematic advantage over its prey because it can choose when to accelerate into optimum supersonic separation speed for the most brutal No Escape Zone parameters on a poor sucker who doesn't see it coming.
Any talks about dogfighting immediately tell me the conversation is based on no modern weapons on any of the fighters.
Typhoons normally carry 4 AIM-120s or Meteors plus 2-4 ASRAAMS and will be in a 2-4 ship minimum.
Flankers carry anywhere from 6-12 BVR & HMS-cued HOBS missiles. You want to set up a merge with that?
