During transition from forward flight to hover or vertical flight, the fairing hinges upward and diverts airflow into the lift-fan, which pumps the air downward. On the fuselage behind the fairing are a pair of auxiliary inlet covers for the aircraft's (main) engine, to offset disturbed airflow to the main engine during V/STOL.
