    Very nice setup, Simon! I always enjoy watching other people's techniques and seeing the wonderful equipment they enjoy. I laugh when my friends act astounded at the amount of money I've invested in my espresso things, yet they don't bat an eye at spending thousands on golf clubs or guns, lol. Coffee just happens to be my hobby 🤣. Keep up the good work.

      @@SimonDrysdale For a couple of years I have used a ECM Casa V for my morning espresso. I also have a KafaTek Monolith conical (the MC3) for my grinder which I have thoroughly enjoyed. Just over Christmas, I upgraded to a Londinium R24. It is a great machine but it is making me wonder if a grinder with flat burrs might give me a different experience. That is how I stumbled across your channel, I was looking at the Option-O Lagom P64. The KafaTek grinders are great, just a bit difficult to buy. I have been getting lighter and lighter with the roasts I enjoy. Take care.

    Great setup. The best of the best. But, I think I saw some channeling during your extraction. In order to get the most out of your setup, I would advise to use a distribution tool (the thing with the needles) during your puck prep. And maybe a tamping mat or stand to protect the wood of your furniture.

      I think it's great. If you only drink dark roasts Lagom recommend just getting the standard Stainless steel Burrs rather than the optional SSP version. Really nice setup. I am looking at the Lagom P64 and the force tamper, I am guessing you happy with both? Thanks for posting!

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  3 роки тому

      Thanks for your response! The Lagom p64 is amazing. I would definitely recommend it. It looks like they’re going to be releasing a 98mm burr set soon in case that matters to you. I’m happy with this one though. I use it purely for espresso and it works amazingly well and is very quiet. Retention is almost negligible. I haven’t really bothered with filter although when I did try it was passable. When I was looking at the alternatives there was only really the kafatek products which is almost impossible to get or the niche zero which I really dislike the look of (and also seems pretty difficult to buy these days!)
      The force tamper is bit of a love hate thing. It is great for consistency but in all honesty, if you’re good or prepared to practice manual tamping it’s probably unnecessary.

    • @postbeam8200
      @postbeam8200 3 роки тому +1

      @@SimonDrysdale I am glad to hear the Lagom P64 is as good as they say and that the ForceTamper might be more effort than its worth. I like the smaller size Lagom so the 64mm is probably a good size for my use, but thanks for the heads on the 98mm! I had been looking at multiple grinders and the Lagom 64 makes it in the top 3 of my short list. For single dosing I am also considering the Titus Nautilus Grinder made by Frank Durra in Germany instagram.com/titusgrinding/
      It uses 98mm blind burrs and is based on the Mahlkoenig EK43 design but reimagined by Frank. But it is kinda pricy and importing it into the USA might be a hassle. If I don't go with single dosing then I like the ECM Titan 64 for looks, it matches my espresso machine perfectly.
      Other Grinders I considered:
      Webber EG-1: Too Big
      Kafatek flat Max: Too hard to buy, and the display is a letdown
      VeraLab M4: Poor reputation for fit/finish and reliability
      Niche Zero: Too appliance-like and loud
      I subscribed to your channel and look forward to updates!

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  3 роки тому

      @@postbeam8200 Thanks for the reply and the sub! I really like the work Titus grinder are doing, I didn't look at the nautilus because I like having a portafilter holder but I loved the TITVS original grinder, it's just so expensive, I think at least 3-4 times the cost of the Lagom P64 and for me, as someone who is quite new to all of this I don't think I could justify it.
      I agree with your assessment of the other grinders, I was put off Webber because I heard that at least with their hand grinder the HG-1 there was quality control issues. Like you say the Kafatek is too hard to buy, I don't really want to wait months and then not even be sure if I will get a slot. I was also really shocked by how much of an afterthought the display was. I also live in the EU importing it would have been too difficult. The Niche zero apart from subjectively not liking the looks and being loud, they're also having problems with massive demand that they can't fulfil.
      Personally I think the Lagom is the best option, but I mainly went with it because I like the look, I like that it's quiet, it's really low retention and most importantly it was available!
      Best of luck with whatever you choose :)

    Nice video. I just got my Force Tamper today :-) Sadly I got 58.35 and I think a 58.5 would be a better fit, but I think I can just get a new replacement base only (fingers crossed)...
    Question... Have you messed with the tamping pressure of the force tamper? any tips on that?

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  3 роки тому +1

      Ah that's interesting, the 58.5 is a pretty good size for the standard portafilter baskets but I always thought the .35 would work just as well. I don't mess with the tamping pressure all that much because I wasn't sure how you'd know when you got it back to the default 10kg of force, so I wanted to just leave it at that. With that I know that it's applying that force consistently and then the only variables I need to change are my dose or grind size! Thanks for watching.

    Maybe thats because here in Italy usually you can just walk 2 minutes to a bar and for 1e drink a perfect espresso
    btw here an espresso is usually much less, around 25g in 25s from 9g of coffee

    Hi, I just got a mini and decided to upgrade my current specialita to either Niche Zero or Lagom 64. How do you like the Lagom 64 with your mini? Is it easy to dial in? Did you get the. normal burr or the HU burr?

    • @SimonDrysdale
      @SimonDrysdale  3 роки тому +3

      I think it's a great combination, I was looking at the titan grinders and the monolith as well but they are 2-5x the price of the Lagom p64 and I don't think it's possible that they are 2-5 times as good. I got the SSP high uniformity burrs which work great with the Linea Mini. People had said that the Mini works best with darker roasts but I've had no problem with any type of roast with the grinder. It goes finer than you would ever practically need. I was a complete beginner but after a month or so I find it easy to dial in. Perhaps 1-2 brews after I buy a new bean. The adjustments aren't stepwise so you can make minor adjustments.

    • @moningho5859
      @moningho5859 3 роки тому

      Thanks for your detailed reply. I found it’s harder to work with mini paired with specialita than my previous E61 machine. For lighter roasts, the expresso either went too bland or sour on mini, it’s hard to get right. And with darker roasts, it’s easier to get a enjoyable drink. I think it’s just the nature of the roasts not with mini in particular. I’ll go for a HU though it’s twice of price of niche. Practice makes perfect.
