I've been praising this game for over twenty years. Maui Mallard definitely deserves more love. It's a very well-made game and definitely one of Disney's biggest oddities of the 90s.

Definitely! It's one of the games I always recommend when it comes to the SNES library. It deserves more love.

Stumbled upon this vid at just the right time it seems. Noticing how much I've missed out on from previous console generations, been gathering retro games to play later, including the ones people deem as hidden gems. It's good to have all these lists of "must-play titles" from each console but vids like this are extra appreciated because there's also stuff I've never heard about before that seems appealing to me.
Either way it always stings to see an alternative release that apparently had so much going for it in terms of visuals and OST ending up inferior, thank you for the dissection

Thanks, glad that the breakdown was helpful. I too have been gathering a list of games/series that I missed out on. My hope is to get around to them one day, but backlogs lol.

Now that's a game I love! I've played this on PC for decades! I'm more familiar with the PC/Genesis/Mega Drive version, but the SNES version is pretty well-made. Either way, thanks for spreading more love to this underrated Disney classic.

I got a question, the stuff I'm describing in the video (like swinging feeling off), was it something you remember being a thing? I'm curious if maybe everything I experienced is just a weird quirk of the steam version.

@@tildeshambles I do remember a lot of it actually, especially the swinging. The swinging is a bit off, even in the old pre-Steam PC CD version (which was just the Genesis version but with nice music). You have to jump and have Ninja Donald touch the swingable object (typically a sparkling object in the wall) at the edge of his bo staff. If you do it anywhere else, it seems to not register. Then, you actually have to hit the jump button AND hold the desired directional button (right, left, or up) at the end of Ninja Donald's swing arc to jump further or higher. It's a little too precise at times, but it works well enough.
I have to admit, for the longest time, I've never played the SNES version. Growing up on the PC version... I'm more accustomed to that game's speed and level progression. The SNES is new territory to me. Funny how life works, eh?

@@MrToontastic okay good to know I wasn't going crazy. It is wild to think that people who have nostalgia for this game would have had two such distinct experiences. I might have to try the Genesis version at some point now.

Oh my goodness this game art is amazing and stunning the game is a little dark though!

Right? As a kid I thought this was a game for a TV show or movie or something, but no, it was just a once-off standalone release. I kinda dig the darkness a bit since the setting of the story involves spooky mansions, ghosts and the land of the dead.
