  • Breelynn was born a healthy baby but was kissed by a person with a cold sore as an infant. Since her immune system was not developed, this infection attacked her brain and left her with a severe traumatic brain injury. Now 8 years old, Breelynn is unable to walk or talk and is not expected to live into adulthood. Breelynn's family wants others to know that there is real danger in kissing a baby, especially on the mouth.

No, not me. I kissed my 2 kids on the mouth all the time. They're grown now and we still kiss close to the mouth. Never on the cheek. But I didnt have fever blisters while kissing them when they were babies. Never had the HSV virus, nor anyone in my family that I know of. Maybe we were just lucky. My dad used to kiss my kids on the cheek or the bottom of their feet (when they were infants), my mom too. None of my family or friends ever tried to kiss my kids in the mouth.

HSV is one issue, but also a lot of adults haven't had a pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine in a long time and can pass that too while having few or no symptoms. Very young babies are fragile and really nobody but the parents and pediatrician should be handling them extensively. Once they grow a bit, get a few of their vaccines, and more exposure to the environment it's less of an issue but too many people have boundary issues and a feeling of entitlement about babies. Yeah they're cute, but maybe don't get all up in their faces. And maybe get that TDAP shot updated if you're gonna be around babies...

Left side is involved in language for most people. About 20% of left handers have language on the right hemisphere. Because language lives in the left hemisphere it has been called the dominant side or the logical. The right hemisphere is involved in spatial perceptual and vision. That’s why it’s called the more creative. That said, what we call logic involves more the frontal lobes both left and right. There’s also the connections between different structures of the brain that give us creativity. Very complex our brains!

Exposure to the breast/nipple and consuming human milk poses a risk the baby will contract herpes encephalitis as well. Bottles can be sterilized in the dishwasher, the breast can't. Also commercial formula is pasteurized and breastmilk is not. Even if the risk is small, the sacrifice is small too. You can't be too careful.. So the person that gave it to her could very well not have known they had it bc their viral load was enough to pass it on but not enough to produce a lesion or mouth sore. This is so heartbreaking. What always blows me away and makes me cry when watching these interviews, is how much it contrasts with broader society. Society devalues disabled lives, sees us as “unproductive”, but you can always see in these interviews, how the truth is really the opposite. The disabled family members are the most powerful people in the room. They’re the heart, and the love they generate in the people around them is so pure and unconditional. It shows how backwards society is. The only productivity I strive for is producing a world where everyone is valued and worthy.

With sores I don’t want you around at all before 3 months.
Other fact: if you or the dad has the virus and will give it to your newborn, it can become very sick as well, only the change of dying is less likely. After 3 months the baby will not be at that amount of risk anymore. Just be careful ❤ your child is your everything

I agree that setting boundaries is important, but it is difficult to know what to mention because this seems like the kind of thing no one expects to happen. I had never heard about this no kissing rule until this episode, and kissing people on the mouth is something I just don't expect anyone to do unless they're dating (so definitely not babies).

@@nightyew2160 I've seen a few adults in real life kiss children on the lips, and it always makes me feel icky even though it's supposedly just the adult being affectionate - not just because it kinda looks wrong, but children's immune systems aren't as developed and it's a *great* way of passing germs and stuff on that might overwhelm a child, case in point like the video (and vice versa, but kids are def more vulnerable to it than the adults).

@@Juju-nr7cbyou'd know. There'd be signs. That child wouldn't be calm being held and touched, as you see she's happier in her moms arms than in her chair on the couch by herself. Abuse has signs, people look past them and claim abuse when the child is taken care of. That's the sad part. Abuse is easier to see than anyone realizes, just pay attention to the kids body language around the adult/caregiver, the way they respond and compare that to how they are around friends and other trusted adults like a teacher. It'll be night and day.

PSA- if you ever get cold sores, you shouldn’t be kissing babies anywhere, especially on the face. It can cause blindness if the infection gets in the eyes, and even if you kiss arms, hands etc the baby can still wipe your saliva with the virus onto their face.
Also you don’t have to have an active coldsore to be shedding the virus in your saliva!

I think it's a bit extreme to say anybody who gets cold sores ever should never kiss babies at all.
Certainly, kissing a newborn, especially on the lips, should be avoided. I don't understand the mind of the person who caused her disability and I am glad I'm not overreacting when I cancel plans if there's even a chance I might accidentally spread it.

    • @nattykitkatty

@@Roaming725It's not extreme to say at all. HSV has no cure and doesn't ever leave the body once you have it, so if you have ever had a cold sore ONCE in your life, you have HSV and the potential to spread it. It's not really anything to be ashamed of, though, most people have it. But yeah, don't kiss babies.

When my first child was a week or so old, an uncle of mine came to visit. I watched as he kissed her on the mouth. He had a sore on his mouth. I was in complete shock. Literally nothing I could have done to stop him besides saying from the get go “do not kiss my baby on her mouth”.. which I thought would be a given but it’s really not. After he left I had a meltdown, called my mom, asked her to ask her brother if it was a cold sore. He felt terrible and reassured me it was an injury he got at work. I still don’t think I believe him.
My daughter is a medically healthy happy 7 1/2 year old. This video really struck a chord. Our life could have been very different.

You did an amazing job talking & making her use her expressions to answer all of your ?’s & it was cool to see her loving brother & her parents who are always there for your special needs child or young son too! Keep up the good work & interviews you do with children, teens, young adults & adults of any age in the world we live in! You are a positive person.
I am a high functioning adult & was diagnosed as a kid with ADD & then when I was a young adult in my early 20’s I got diagnosed more with something called Developmentally Delayed from the Children’s Hospital here in Denver CO. I am just to the point I can be who I am today & enjoy life to the fullest & be around my Christian friends & family. Plus a Christian all my life, my dad was a pastor & my mom was an OT!

The ones that there is a computerised voice that is activated when she looks at a certain word/object. I think she’s a bright little bunny and would really enjoy having a conversation, saying I love you or being able to tell them if she’s in pain or feeling unwell. Maybe Chris could start a fundraiser for one. She’s a beautiful little girl with a wonderful family. Xx❤❤
