In Germanic mythology, Thor is a hammer-wielding god associated with lightning, thunder, storms, sacred groves and trees, strength, the protection of mankind, hallowing, and fertility. Besides Old Norse Þórr, the deity occurs in Old English as Þunor, in Old Frisian as Thuner, in Old Saxon as Thunar, and in Old High German as Donar, all ultimately stemming from the Proto-Germanic theonym *Þun(a)raz, meaning 'Thunder'.
Thor is a prominently mentioned god throughout the recorded history of the Germanic peoples, from the Roman occupation of regions of Germania, to the Germanic expansions of the Migration Period, to his high popularity during the Viking Age, when, in the face of the process of the Christianization of Scandinavia, emblems of his hammer, Mjölnir, were worn and Norse pagan personal names containing the name of the god bear witness to his popularity.
Due to the nature of the Germanic corpus, narratives featuring Thor are only attested in Old Norse, where Thor appears throughout Norse mythology. Norse mythology, largely recorded in Iceland from traditional material stemming from Scandinavia, provides numerous tales featuring the god. In these sources, Thor bears at least fifteen names, is the husband of the golden-haired goddess Sif, is the lover of the jötunn Járnsaxa, and is generally described as fierce eyed, with red hair and red beard. With Sif, Thor fathered the goddess Þrúðr; with Járnsaxa, he fathered Magni; with a mother whose name is not recorded, he fathered Móði, and he is the stepfather of the god Ullr. By way of Odin, Thor has numerous brothers, including Baldr. Thor has two servants, Þjálfi and Röskva, rides in a cart or chariot pulled by two goats, Tanngrisnir and Tanngnjóstr, and is ascribed three dwellings (Bilskirnir, Þrúðheimr, and Þrúðvangr). Thor wields the hammer Mjölnir, wears the belt Megingjörð and the iron gloves Járngreipr, and owns the staff Gríðarvölr. Thor's exploits, including his relentless slaughter of his foes and fierce battles with the monstrous serpent Jörmungandr-and their foretold mutual deaths during the events of Ragnarök-are recorded throughout sources for Norse mythology.
Into the modern period, Thor continued to be acknowledged in rural folklore throughout Germanic-speaking Europe. Thor is frequently referred to in place names, the day of the week Thursday bears his name (modern English Thursday derives from Old English þunresdæġ, 'Þunor's day'), and names stemming from the pagan period containing his own continue to be used today, particularly in Scandinavia. Thor has inspired numerous works of art and references to Thor appear in modern popular culture. Like other Germanic deities, veneration of Thor is revived in the modern period in Heathenry.
When you break down Thor beyond just the myths he becomes even more fascinating and much more relatable and accessible. Awesome.
One of my favorite things about Thor's associations with weddings is the old practice (pre-20th century) in Scandinavia of putting a hammer on the bride's lap. I suspect this practice predates the story of Thrym placing Mjolnir on Freja's (really Thor's) lap, which was probably a comedic reference/"explanation" for the practice that our ancestors would have found entertaining. Your point about Thor (and thus Mjolnir) being a protective symbol lends to the idea that a man pledged protection to his bride by placing the hammer on her lap. It's possible this could date back all the way to the Neolithic when the Indo-Europeans venerated Perkwunos on the steppe. This is a practice we modern pagans should revive. This also could open an interesting conversation about Nordic Bronze Age burials with ceremonial axe offerings (to offer the dead protection).
A magnificent male llion named Thor, living at a sanctuary in South Africa, was struck by lightening and killed on December 5th, 2013, a Thursday. Gives me chills.

Since seeing Thor as more of this protective life force energy, I've really related it to "prana" (meaning life force) from Indian/yogic philosophy. As they all come from the same indo-euro origins, it makes sense. Especially, in the end of your video, speaking to the strength of aura. I do think there's a connection between doing pranayama (breathwork in yoga) and invoking Thor's powerful life force energy. Just my take on it.
I though the same but dont know alot about it. Thor too is known to be a very distant parallel of Indra. Are prana and Indra related in any way?

There is a conversation in Upanishads between Indra and Pratardana where Indra says: “I am Prana… Meditate on me as life, as immortality. Prana is Life. Life is Prana. Immortality is Prana, Prana is Immortality. As long as Prana dwells in this body, so long surely there is life.” III.2 (Max Muller, 2004)
I actually come from a Thor clan--my Norwegian farming family, in ancient times, viewed Thor as their patron god. Oak clan--Eike. Very surprised we still know this! They needed rain at the right times for farming, so the god of weather was closely associated with good crop production. Finns (Ukko) and the Sami (Tiermes) have their own versions of Thor--he really got around. And Thor's hammer was placed on the bride's lap for fertility (and, I suspect, a crude Viking joke, something about hammering...LOL). Also, a saga says Thor is a redhead. Marvel couldn't even get THAT right!
Marvel Thor is different for copyright reasons, just like GOW Thor.
There is no such things as a Thor clan. Thats ridicolous. We havent had "clans" for a thousand years. Can you trace your family straight and exact for a 1000 years back? There were cults surrounding certain gods in certain geographical areas, thats all.
"Patron god" is the wrong term, its modern.
Everyone worshipped Thor.
Everyone needed rain.
And all the other things Thor do.
Many sagas and sources say hes redhead, not just one.

That the reason i cant make a Thor that looks like Marvel Thor or a Dracula similar the Dracula from Castlevania. Its not hard to understand lol

Tacitus may well have been an honest and true historian and wrote down exactly what he discovered and was told without embellishment (other than interpretaio romana), but that doesnt mean what people told him was also true, especially if we assume he bought them some ale to loosen their lips
@@isty4491 in ancient times, people served their kings. They went to them for advice & help & authority. The greatest & valiant kings were treated as a husband-owner of the peoples.
So after a king died, people would still go to them for advice, help & authorization. But they were now in ‘spirit’ realms, so the people would treat them as an ‘ascended’ spirit-king
..this is the literal definition of a ‘god’. Many gods of many cultures can be traced back to humans. Some even trace back to antediluvian Nephilim & many myth gods are blurred together & recreations of multiple beings.
The whole idea of completely fictitious ‘gods’, is only a modern idea from the same people that teach us that the ancient people were too stupid to have built pyramids, monoliths & granite stoneware. It’s just a false narrative that looks at the past through modern cultural [mis]understanding.

There were actually many iterations of & different historical men each called ‘Heracles’. The original or most ancient one is the ‘Libyan’ legend
..it stems from the king of a people that Rome called the ‘Carthaginians’. Their first great king was called in Semitic language ‘the king of the city/place’. The term we know as ‘Ha Milca Ar’ (Hamilcar) ..the title given to a man who was the king that built an aqueduct over the Straight of Gibraltar.
A title that later became a name through misunderstanding of language.
..and yes, Rome literally pre-existed their own founding & history. They rewrote their founding & history but their name itself proves they existed long before 750 AD ..as Semitic tongues called these Chittim a nickname that stuck.. ‘the spear peoples’. HaRomaim/HaRomim from Romakh (Spear).
But that’s all just from my own fallible research. The point is, Hercules is a name used by many & blurred together into one modern legend. It could have just been the title or nickname given to any valiant hero.
Maybe one of the handful of historical men that this name can trace to, did actually travel to the northern pagans. Or Thor, when told among the other cultures, was translated to the term Heracles. 🤷🏼♂️
But I do know that Jupiter is most likely just the Latin translation of their forefather, Japheth.

U could possibly be referring to how many Germanic gods had alternate names, like Odin was also known as Rik. So interesting.

Hi, I live in Gothenburg and have been studying the map for a while. Thor in swedish is "Tor". I have found we have many places containing the name "Tor". And, I have found some of those places are in line on the map. For example outside my hometown I found:
Tormunden - Torsvik - Tors slott - Torsholmen - Torsby (Gloshed altare)
Those place are in line and whats more strange, if I measure distances between I find mathematical correlations such as mid position and golden ratio.

It sounds like your talking about Ley Lines, though I'm not certain. They supposedly make up some sort of power grid and places along the lines are presumably places of spiritual power plus, where they cross each other, or meet up, is supposed to be a very spiritually powerful vortex, or something like that. I don't really know how best to explain/describe ley lines so it's probably better to just search it on the internet. I could be completely wrong of course, but I hope this helps. Good luck.

@@Greye13 Yes it's a geographical leyline. But it streches over our archipelago so I think it is not a so called energy line. I have to do more research. I am wondering why the golden ratio appears. This number is associated with the pentagram, and the planet Venus. Can Thor have any relation to the morning star?

The pics u showed as germanic tribes are actually celtic, even one of the chieftains is wearing an Urnfield culture armor from early iron age.
About thursday, the spellbooks actually indicate thursday's eve, that is, the start of Friday, norse and germanic tribes counted the days starting at sunset, the best sourse accounting it is Tacitus' Germania; so each eve was the begining of what we perceive as the next day in modern times, so Thursday's eve is actually early Friday and magic was preferably performed at that time frame considering the seeress goddess Frigg the sourse of her day's power.
The ancients thought deseases were caused by thurses and Thor hunts down thuses so he was summoned to fight the thurse that caused a desease, even the pus was thought to be a thurse's doing, this can be seen on the inscription on the Sigtuna amulet, so I don't buy that magnetic thing at the end of the video

I agree that Thor and the other Gods are feelings/ emotions and events interpreted by pre-scientific minds.
I have seen in my personal life that if you believe in the power of something so much (Know that it is there without a shadow of doubt in your heart) that your subconcious will alter situations or bring about some great change over time.
I am not Christian, but I live in Honduras and have seen the Christian people here do some amazing things. I Know what I know about Christianity, but they Know what they know as well. So in my opinion the subconcious plays a huge role Faiths and even Magic around the world.

Hi Devon Musser, you are right about the subconscious and magic-religion.Alot of magic is concentrated thought .The "tools" used to help consentrate are ritual , ,sacred objects ,group participation ,singing chanting etc. When you think about it a lot of valuable things ,foods and materials are concentrations and that's part of why I have this theory. Honey ,cream , gold , iron.Even a garden bed is a concentration of organic matter , and fertility in the soil to create ideal growing conditions for food plants.
In regards to the runestones, I'm reminded of a runestone in Sandby, the inscription of which Dr. George Stephens reconstructed as including "while this stone has life." Now, there's no mention of Thor on the stone, to my recollection, and we have to take Stephens' reconstruction with a grain of salt, but I wonder if an animistic idea of "bringing the stone to life," so to speak, would illicit the invocation of Thor.

Thor was the son of Odin a sky /death god and earthmother .It makes sense he controls crops ,and health.If any of you out there are farmers or even back yard gardeners you'll know that the amount of plant growth after a rainy thunderstorm is amazing ,far more than other water.Also you cannot have growth and life without death, metaphorically and practically all very normal and natural ,

Could you do more videos about England? I’m very interested myself took few dna test and some mistook me completely for Danish. Others got it right with English some significant Scandinavian. Im very interested in England’s history now with Denmark Norway etc
The ancestry dna studies have been lumping Denmark in with Northern England and Germanic for sometime.. until recently that is.. depending on which ones you used they have been updating them. You have to remember when it comes to dna it isn’t really about where you think your ancestors are from but where their ancestors came from.. and that’s what you got.

Funny thing I looked at a study the Danes did on themselves at an international level on themselves as a country and was published in their newspapers and media I think they found genetically they had the highest resembles of genetics or genes to England

I've read there is at least one stone carved with an invocation to Thor to aid in Seidr work.
Something that I have also heard (I have forgotten the source) is that Thor controls gravity which is why Mjolnir always returns to him.
I presume that since Thor is connected to the Earth's magnetic field, those in the Viking Age knew that our globe HAD a magnetic field. I wonder how they detected it. But, moving on, I suspect that my aura is in need of a casket.

It seems for what the ancestors ask for and want to invoke points to an actual deity like a Zeus type god that is living. But it does make sense that the gods were energies and elements and that is what they were thought to be. It's a little confusing to me but all I can do is continue to learn.
Many of Thor’s features, for instance relating to thunder and lightening, and weather and sky more broadly, seem to relate to the theorised Indo-European Sky Father god Deus-Pater (from whom the Greek and Roman gods Zeus and Jupiter derive their names). However, the Norse god derived from Deus-Pater is held to be Tyr (I think the link can be seen more clearly in the Anglo-Saxon form of the name, Tiu, which is quite similar to Deus). Any idea how or why the features of the Sky Father shifted to another deity in the Norse, and possibly more broadly Germanic, tradition? Thanks!
Norse gods were prayed to way long before Greek gods were. Little secret most of what Greek gods are is stolen from the norse pagan gods.

And further, the people we call the Norse did not even exist at the time of Classical Greece. The Norse were an early-to-mid Medieval culture. They came from earlier Germanic peoples who would have existed in the classical era. The earliest writings we have of Germanic peoples are all written by Greeks and Romans, and a long time after they had already been writing about their own gods. And what we have of the Norse sagas and epics were not written down until the Christian era in Scandinavia, well over a thousand years after Classical Greece. This does not tell us when the people who would become the Norse started worshipping their gods, but it certainly is not true that any Norse, or even Germanic, books date to before Classical Greeks, because there were no Norse people, and the Germanic peoples didn’t have books at all at that time. And what we do know from linguistics certainly does not tell us that the Greek gods derived from the Germanic gods. Rather, it tells us that both pantheons descend from a common ancestor, the Protocol-Indo-European gods. Watch the videos on this channel about the Indo-European people. He explains a lot about it. I somehow doubt that people back at the 900's and earlier knew about the magnetic field of the Earth and the atmosphere. It makes sense, I just doubt they knew about there being any kind of magnetic field or things like that.

Very good and interesting video! It can be hard for young, new pagans like me to actually buy this "true" meaning of the Gods. Because the image from our folklores are so strong. But it makes sense and we'll have to mature with time and find ourself in our ancestors faith.
Hercules actually is not the Roman equivalent of Jupiter. He is the son of Jupiter, and is himself a Roman Demi-God (the equivalent of the Greek Heracles). This appears to mean that the Roman interpretation of Germanic gods is somewhat inconsistent, because Tacitus equates Thor with Hercules, but the days of the week equate Thor with Jupiter.
Both kind of make sense - Hercules and Thor both carry a blunt trauma weapon (a club and a hammer respectively), and they both fight a giant serpent. But, Jupiter and Thor are both storm gods, associated with thunderbolts, etc. These different Indo-European pantheons never seem to quite match, so there must have been quite a few changes as they all evolved out of the Proto-Indo-European belief system.

I thought I'd post this about the depression. Also I would NEVER suggest or encourage anyone to stop any medications prescribed by a Dr, ever.
For myself antidepressants never worked for me. I've tried most SSRs. A few mood stabilizers made me very aggressively violent. I don't take anything now tho.
Depression is actually the bodies normal response to inflammation or any damage or traumas. The body making you depressed. causes you to have to stay in a stationary position and in one spot, so that it is able to heal itself. That's what depression is for. It's literally a perfectly normal bodily function. Whereas a 40hr week stuck inside, with low levels of sunlight, is very abnormal. And very unhealthy since sunlight kills viruses naturally. And vitamin D is essential for just about every bodily function we have to from thyroid chemicals to serotonin and melatonin to building healthy cells walls. Literally. But please I'd recommend that everyone go look all this up themselves. Research it yourself. Please don't believe my information and look it up yourselves. For me it was the oxalates. It sent me to the ER a lot.
Regardless of all that, a lot of the stuff with the runes works with sympathetic behavior. It's why prayer works.
Also a lot of this is so psychosomatic. Marriages, they were unions made for protection and babies, mainly. Oh and I have found the subject matter of Tartaria and what's thought to be a massive mud flood to very educational. There's a channel called, minds unveiled that throws out some very interesting information about the Irish and religion itself.
Is there's anything in the Scandinavian historical records about a flood or cataclysmic event other than Ragnarok? That's comparable to the apocalypse written in the book revelations though. Thought you might find the "outside the box" thinking put forth in the videos. Oh and there's also a channel called, Universe Inside You, which goes over the information about manifestation, self healing and the powers of the both the body and mind. I think there are some very valid points made by all of these channels I've suggested. You appear to be the type that also knows how valuable knowledge can be.

Particularly when dealing with religious beliefs, I don't feel comfortable with creating an equivalency between "earlier" and "purer." If you do cling to such an equivalence, you have denied any changes in beliefs over time of legitimacy.

I think people get Thor and Jesus mixed up a lot...especially the Christians. They want Thor (strong, vengeful, weapon toting and don't take no shiz) but technically worship the God of Love, Kindness, and "Turn the other cheek". I think Thor is much more likely to open-carry and/or have a CWP. :)
