  • There are many different parts to the soul/self in Norse Pagan Beliefs. The hugr/hug is perhaps the most important and most attested in later folktales. It is also similar to other tribal peoples around the world who have concept of a soul that can travel in and out of the body. This video goes over the whole background and history of the Hug.

I have had many astral experiences throughout my lifetime. Dismissed as "dreams" by my Christian family as a kid, and yet when I went to describe them, I found that it was impossible to describe places and events that I had experienced while "unconscious" that were more real than waking reality. After awhile, you give up talking to people about it, simply because it is like describing colors to people who are color blind. I explained to my kids that dreams are like the old box tvs of the 80s and 90s, really vivid dreams are like modern HDTV, and the visions I used to mistakenly lump into the dream category are like a 4D IMAX theatre ride. Thanks for adding clarity to this subject, it helps me not just understand my personal experiences, but also explains a lot of the odd behavior of my German grandma who routinely predicted events and described far away experiences she had while "dreaming".

The frustrating part about it is the disbelief.
You can tell people about it, but you can't understand it for them.
I has a Epiphany as well as out of body experiences. No one believes me when I tell them so I finally quit talking about it.
So here I am. I've been given very important information about the destruction of this planet. One would think that people would be interested, or do some research and see for themselves, but nope! They simply reject the truth and act like your out of your mind.
If there isn't a major change in the way we think and operate, our Epatath will be, "TO STUPID TO SURVIVE! "

@@kurtbogle2973 I would say that for most people, they are not stupid for not being able to perceive what seems to be experienced by a tiny minority of others. But this is a consequence of our collective destruction of and separation from nature. I wonder just how many people have also had these experiences, but suppress, ignore, discount, or deny them due to cultural and religious biases imposed upon them by society as a whole. But yeah, I understand, most people prefer their creature comforts of fast food and entertainment over deep thought or direct spiritual experiences that should be the norm for human beings.

Best explanation I've heard so far. The nature of your thoughts are shaped by both conscious mind and unconscious mind, and are unique to you...Odin gave us the gift of breath, which gave us life. When you meditate you focus on the...breath...to control you mind. So in theory the connection of Hugr to thoughts, and to soul/life makes sense, as Odin is kind of involved...

My grandmother “Wicker” died very young at only 62 years old and I was 22. She died January 21st. So it’s very strange I’m finding this video January 24.The moment she died, she waited until I arrived, when I walked into the room and I felt like a ton of bricks hit me in the chest and like a breeze went through my body. That night I saw her standing outside my window underneath a street light and I believe it was her soul or Hugr saying goodbye. I think I felt her life force pass through my body. There have been times when I think a little bit of her is still with me. I know it seems very strange and her and I were very close. I love her very much. It took me years to grieve her death. Thank you for this video because it makes what I experienced make so much more sense. I’m so glad I found your channel. Thank you again.

this is so important and you RARELY see people talking about this in mainstream media on norse religion its always about the gods because thats the lens thats always taken to explore religion "what gods do they believe in" but I think that really speaks more to a kind of late christian epistemology than any universal truth about the human experience of spirituality

From a Neuro Cognitive Psychology perspective, I suspect that the Hugr is connected to consciousness. When you are conscious (i.e., aware, alert, and being "yourself"), your Hugr CANNOT be present; conversely, when you are unconscious (i.e., unresponsive) or in an altered state of consciousness (e.g., sleep deprived, on medication, sick, drunk, high), your Hugr CAN be present.
Also, when you talked about Odin fearing losing Huginn and Muninn, it made me think of a man aging and feeling his mind slip away... an experience we now know as dementia. Interestingly, the risk of developing dementia is positively correlated with alcohol consumption... so, the Norse were probably at higher risk for developing dementia. Also, dementia and consciousness are linked...
Their belief in Animism probably ties in nicely with consciousness too.

Look into the culture and religion of your ancient pre-Christian-conversion ancestors. They knew a lot more and were more connected to Nature and the Earth and Wildlife than the Christ myth conquerors led us to believe. They were called Heathen or Pagan or Barbarian or Savages. Any of these titles should be worn on the sleeve as badges of honor! Connect with them. Realize the same Earth you walk upon was the Earth they also walked upon. The same moon and sun they glared at are the same moon and sun you see every single day of your life. It's a fascinating connection. It can be DEEP if you allow it to be. It touches that soul you speak of.

I am interested in your thoughts on how there could be an hereditary DNA element that allows an ancestral Hugr to temporarily control your body in a "berserker" state. It is more power than normal, but it is also doing combat skills that you never learned and in which we are not in control of ourselves. It comes not at our request. And it is very controlled. On a battlefield, yes, it will kill. But off the battlefield, say in a sports competition, it will win but not cause damage to the opponent. It's almost like just a quick message. Honor your ancestors. We are with you. We can be one with you.

I had surgery today and was put unconscious, as I was waking up I had a genuine real feeling of me with my ancestors preparing to sail of to sea as a Vikings (I don’t know what for), there was no visuals of this “dream” its was just a complete sense/feeling of this is who we are and this is what we are doing. And when I woke up all drugged up the nurse said the first thing I said why just “Viking” and “prepare to go”. I don’t believe in our ancestors beliefs or spirts and afterlife but I’ve alway felt a strong connection to it and this was on another level
What do you think was this me connecting to my ancestors or was it just a drugged up dream, I know your into the spiritual side so I thought I would ask. I have strong German, Scandinavian and especially strong danish viking ancestry in England so who knows

There is a word in Sweden that is commonly used today; håglös - a person can be håglös (lös meaning loose basically). Translates to a person who has lost energy/spirit/drive. To be completely håglös, someone would be expected to basically just lay on bed all day without energy to do anything. Listless is what google translates it to.

DMT is not a something to be experienced before death, it's like the trip for the real you, the soul to leave your body again. But you can learn breathing techniques to excrete DMT in your body, because the lungs produce the most DMT in a human body. What I do is, I eat psilocybin mushrooms from my homeland collected in autumn (or sometimes homegrown), It helps a lot when learning these breathing techniques and these techniques intensifie the trips by thousands. it's also possible to leave the body at will and go to the astral planes, to speak with the gods, and the spirits. It has helped me in my life also, because I can use my body's capabilities almost 100%, because I move and use my body with my soul like the bodies were intended by the gods and not the other way around, like most of the material people these days do.

Being a old Spirit is hard. We are at a much higher frequency than people to day. We do not fit. People shunn us without knowing why.
On top of that we were already awake in past lives, so during our lives we wake up.
It's a little bit like the red ,and the blue pill in the Matrix.
In all honesty here we are totally awake in a world of people pretending to be asleep.
    Eventually we detach from Humanity,
but being very Empathetic that gives little relief.

Nowadays this is called "Astral projection", there are many studies that have been done, and even documents of people who worked for the government that were successful at Astral projection, they worked for the Cia and it has been used to eavesdrop on enemies to find nukes, and other operations. One of the main things they said was NOT to disrupt them in the middle of this, because they could die, and the part of them that left can't get back in the body.
This is all very well documented. So it's not a myth. Our people were able to do some amazing things.

it´s definately the head soul / the dream
soul, the soul that represents your
consciousness.. it´s the same in most
    uralic traditions.. although memory
could also mean the memory of you, as in
you live as long as you are remembered.
it´s one of the main agents in shamanic
    work.. i would separate it
from the breath soul (löyly in finnish,
also steam that comes from sauna) which
    is connected to actual breathing..
because you don´t really die when you go
asleep or unconsciouss, but when your
breathing stops that´s when the end comes
(try holding your breath, that´s how
    close we are to death).
also it´s different from the re-incarnating
soul that is more connected to bones,
skulls, nails or hair, the latter often
being added to death dolls.. there are
tales of people having actual bones or skulls
of their relatives, so the death dolls might
have replaced that tradition.. i guess it´s
just something that belonged to the person,
where their soul can rest until it is reborn
(there is no otherworld in this tradition,
the soul goes straight from the doll to the
    next child of kin).
also it´s different from the heart soul
("the core") which is often considered
the same as life soul but more connected
    to gut, arteries, feelings, happiness,
    saddness, honesty, being sincere, things
like that (when you live against your
heart soul you become very tired).
however it is very similar to the shadow
soul (is, lotar, ort), they are most likely
the same thing.. the shadow soul can
shapeshift and do many kinds of crazy
things, which corresponds to what happens in
dreams.. though often even it is considered
two different souls, with the shadow soul
proper turning into a ghost after death
(and then into an insect) or travelling
to the moon / otherworld and the other
shadow soul (mirror image) continuing to
live with the relatives.. it is told that
the shadow soul proper gives a person their
    identity, memory and consciousness (which
is different to breath soul that gives
    actual life).
it´s very complicated, everything i said
there is also incorrect when reading from
another source, because different people :)
but the important thing is that all the souls
should have a function, you only need the
ones that matter to YOU (just because
some shroomhead shaman said that you
have seven souls doesn´t make it so).

    • @joutavainen2920
      @joutavainen2920 2 роки тому

come to think of it!.. "it" is probably
one of the names of the shadow soul
in ie languages.. because it´s also
that in modern finnish (it-se).. i don´t really
use It because we make our own terms
      but you know.
      pronoums, they´re old as fuck.

So I know my wife but I can't remember her name, as an example, although this is a very superficial example of how this actually feels. In reality it is terrifying. Not only can I fail to remember my wife's name I cannot remember most vocabulary. This happens about 2-3 times annually so not a lot and I have just lived with it. I'm a monotheist, in the sense of believing in Existence as the highest deity. But I take away a completely different view of the soul than traditional Judeo-Christianity. It never says an immortal essence. In fact the texts constantly remind that man is mortal, but the spirit carries on.
The creation of the nephesh describes a process of energy and hardware giving rise to software. Breath and body joined together to produce a soul, a living creature.
So with that perspective (just for my own speculation on the nature of things) I think of the idea of Hugr more as sending out the spirit, the lifewind, while maintaining a kind of tether to the body to convey thought, or patterns, words in the sense of information transmitting through 'geometrical' energy.

He is not a real human vitki in the Ynglingasaga, but rather a vitki who has been transformed, has been ergrifte by Odin. He was seized by Odin and so would ,and this was not considered presumptuous at the time, a personification of Odin. Likewise, I always understood the story of the anchorite’s living in a hammock slung from a tree for days and receiving an insight leading to the runes as a godi’s being possessed by Odin, not a God, Himself, having to suspend Himself from the World Tree.
