I love Agnes Baltsa! She is one of best mezzos ever to grace the operatic stage. She blends her chest voice seamlessly with her upper register. And her voice is sooo sexy! A perfect choice for Carmen!

I remember when this was on PBS. I was so tired after a hard day and then I remembered Carmen was going to be on PBS that night. I loved this opera. It was not a HD TV nor was it stereo nor was it cable TV. But it was such a wonderful performance. Then it came out on VHS. And I played it and played it. I have viewed many other versions of Carment but she is my favorite. Her voice and facial expresention, i have seen no one surpass her performance. And the presentation was in my opinion as Bizet intended it. I have many VHS of Carmen but this performance is my favorite. I imagine somewhere along the way there was a DVD version. I love the scene that follows where she danced on the table.
She has a brightness to her voice that I really like! She doesn't go so dark as some singers do. The acting in Carmen is great. I just love this opera anyway, and I love seeing a mezzo as the lead! I wish there were more lead roles and beautiful arias for mezzo sopranos. Her singing is a little undisciplined but very effective!

Note how powerful her voice is, even at low volume.
I had a French Canadian roommate translating this for me as it was sung. I had the translation on the CD insert, but when she said, "watch out" with her Canadian accent...it was a moment. 🇨🇦🇫🇷🇺🇲 👀

The night I watched Marilyn Horne sing this in recital at Wait Chapel. During our trip to the venue Ms. Horne insisted we observe her from backstage which we did. She handled her body like the bellows of some great organ; and short of a live human birth it was truly an amazing sight to witness. She swelled her body controlling every breath, tone, or utterance from her neck to her knees. A master class for anyone with ambition to sing opera.

Like a fine wine, savor the flavor, or perhaps better said, savor her voice, and give it time to age in your mind. it will be all the better when you hear it later.
I listen to this wonderful 63 year old lady every day before starting work. Not only is she a wonderful singer she can change her slippers twice while performing.
