- From the first act of Bizet's Carmen, performed by the Metropolitan Opera in 1988, directed by James Levine, with José Carreras and the wonderful mezzosoprano Agnes Baltsa.

Это самая "живая", "настоящая" Кармен из тех, кого я слышала :) Голос, на мой вкус, немного резковат, но мне очень нравится созданный певицей образ - он отлично передает характер и историю персонажа. Грубая, наглая, крикливая, циничная, шумная, ленивая, манипулятивная, не терпящая возражений торговка-цыганка, которая перекричит и переговорит любого, живет по принципу "ублажайте меня", а понятием "любовь" только манипулирует. Прямо точнее не скажешь и не споешь. Мне нравится, что она совсем не такая "утонченная", какой почему-то принято изображать Кармен.

Agnes Baltsa is Greek, but connecting the dots of her background on an Island that, off and on, spent long periods of domination under the Venetian Republic Control + her physical appearance makes me strongly believe she has a lot of Northeastern Italy Celtic and Germanic DNA. People of her appearance is what usually happens when you blend much Darker Fully Greek or Southern Italian with the more Northern European Genes. The Soldiers, Sailors and Merchants of the Venetian Republic were very much likely to come from the lands not far from Austria and Bavaria maybe even more so than Venice itself. Her birth name was only slightly altered for the stage, and doesn't have enough syllables to be originally Greek. I feel sure though that she must still be very GREEK in her soul.
i guess only Carmen herself did it better as Agnes Baltsa. BRAVO!
