Maria Callas Live: Bizet's Carmen Habanera, Hamburg 1962

Callas’s only operatic appearances in Germany were Lucia di Lammermoor, with Karajan conducting, in Berlin in 1955, and La sonnambula in Cologne in 1957, but in both 1959 and 1962 she made concert tours of the country, visiting Hamburg twice. The video recordings of her concerts in the city showcase her in a dazzling variety of Italian and French repertoire for both soprano and mezzo-soprano: three contrasting Verdi roles (Lady Macbeth, Elvira from Ernani and Elisabetta from Don Carlo); Imogene from Bellini’s Il pirata; Giulia from La vestale; Chimène from Massenet’s Le Cid; Verdi’s most explosively dramatic aria for mezzo-soprano - Eboli’s ‘On don fatale’ from Don Carlo; Carmen’s seductive Habanera and Seguédille and, from Rossini’s La Cenerentola, Angelina’s final rondo, which magically combines modest charm and sparkling virtuosity.

Callas IS Carmen. too bad she never did the part on an opera stage, but we do have these concert numbers from it, plus the complete recording (which i have, and treasure), and it all sounds very definitive, in terms of the part. always wondered why she didn't do the full version on stage somewhere. Callas IS Carmen. surely, she should have realized this, but... we must respect her reasons, whatever they were. who ever sang it better, or was more temperamentally suited to the part? yes, Rise Stevens did a fine, intelligent job, and was renowned for it, but Callas, Callas!!!

Man, the confidence is in the body language, the crossed arms, the facial expressions, the POINTING, the swinging back and forth that you just HAVE to do on those notes, and that’s not even to mention the singing. What a great art form, very glad this came with a video, half of the beauty truly is in the way she grabs the audience so tightly, so confidently, it’s almost alien! You know I don’t mean this as an insult but I personally don’t find her exceptionally attractive, I definitely don't feel the need to focus on her looks at least like so many of these comments are, and I bring that up because a lot of these comments are so focused on either calling her ugly or just fawning over how beautiful she is, and I think that’s a shame because no matter how she looks, she fucking NAILED this, absolutely dominated this performance with the precision and skill of a god damn brain surgeon. Imagine you get out of surgery and instead of thanking the doctor you tell her she’s pretty, it doesn’t make any sense to focus on that.

I was watching videos by André Rieu, and then I googled "la Habanera" from Opera Carmen and this video appeared to me. I think it is the 1st time I hear María Callas sing. I've heard a lot about her but it never occurred to me to try to hear her sing, I don't know why ... maybe because I don't usually listen to Operas. And if it wasn't for UA-cam, I think I would never have heard it

Kudos to her, standing up there for a full TWO MINUTES of living the music before the Habanera begins, with all eyes upon her, waiting for her to perform, looking professionally engaged the whole time. NOT EASY.

Я в восторге! В Советском Союзе была такая практика, знакомить школьников с культурой союзных республик и государств. Мы с нашим учителем музыки сделали танец на эту музыку и она меня волнует до сих пор

GEN Z: PAY ATTENTION. This is without doubt the finest singing voice of the 20th century. Any genre, and situation. No artificial aids, no autotune, no amplification, just pure vocal talent and power. No one since 1980 to today is anywhere near this level of brilliance.

Me, being from Gen z and listening to this masterpiece, or.. well... one of them. Generation Z, like previous generations, do not listen to a single genre. The fact that a generation listens to a genre more frequently than others does not mean it is the only musical genre they like.
