The first time I saw Carmen the opera was this one with Julia McGinnis-Johnson, above all of any that I've seen she is the ultimate "Carmen" Bravo Julia bravo.
I owned this DVD some years ago and one day it cracked right across the middle, and I could never watch the riveting sexy Julia Migenes-Johnson become my ultimate Carmen ever again. Trouble is, Julia has spoiled me for any other opera singer trying to depict Carmen! I miss this film and its music so much. So thanks so much for posting this.

I had to watch about 8 film versions of Carmen in my Race and Identity in Music class this semester, and this Carmen was the one who turned me on the most (and we even watched the Hip-Hopera where Carmen was Beyonce!). Jesus Christ, this woman IS Carmen.
The movie is 30 years old. If you ever come to Italy I suggest you visit Verona and attend a CARMEN performance at the 2,000 year old Roman Arena. The festival usually takes place between end of June and early September. Unfortunately 2020 the festival was cancelled due to Covid-19. Hopefully it takes place in 2021.
If I had been introduced to opera with this, I would have paid more attention.
