Homesteading is a lot of daily, endless work. We spend far more of our day, every day splitting wood, prepping food, tending animals and gardens, fishing, hunting, fixing infrastructure etc than we ever spent working in on corporate America. I watch several homesteading family channels but am most intrigued by yours. Everything you do from bee keeping to surviving the winter months to growing a most fabulous garden and preserving most of your food is absolutely AMAZING. Season that waffle iron to within an inch of it's life. Place directly on the coals until smoking hot. Grease, add batter, cook on top of stove. Otherwise it sticks. Some other tricks are let the batter stand for 30 mins, the lysis of the flour helps. Fat in the batter a must. And do without sweet or liquidy additions until it works well most of the time. Canned or frozen berries work great in muffins but reek havoc in waffle irons. Go for dried into the batter before lysis. They absorb some moister and don't turn things that weird blue grey color.

Thank you for sharing the issue with your chickens. We had lost our rooster during the same cold snap. It is reassuring to know that someone else is having the same issue :-)
Great to get the small projects finished up and completed while the weather is decent. I am up at 4 am, glad to watch this to motivate me to start my outside projects (loading wood in the house and the like) while we wait for a Nor'easter coming on Saturday. Thanks for the great content!

Long time watcher of your channel. First comment. I absolutely love the teamwork. GREAT chemistry. I recently purchased a 14-acre plot of raw land in the rolling hills of southeast Oklahoma. I am leaving the grid. I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your videos. Thank you.
Good luck to you! I'm trying to work up the nerve to do the same thing, but I know I would not make it in the heat and humidity of the Midwest/South without AC. I'll have to go north.
You guys do such a good job on music selection and editing on the nature scenes you do. It show cases the majesty of the state Alaska is. Hope to be seeing new chickens in the spring.

Hi Illia Family, congratulations for 550k subs. My partner and I love your channel. What a team you guys make, what a dream you guys live, definitely our dream that's for sure. A daily dose of SLA really does make our day, we can't sleep well without one these days. My partner and I both agree that our relationship has improved the more we watch this channel, so thank you, we love the Illia family and the life journey & adventure you share with us ❤
Simple test to avoid sticking and ensure the waffle iron is hot enough: flick some water on it. If it skates around (leidenfrost effect) it's hot enough. If it slowly sizzles, or not at all, you're headed for sticksville (even with oil)
I missed seeing Bandit in this video. I am so thankful for all the wonderful content you put in your videos, plus the drone views. I especially enjoy your cooking; you both are so creative!! I have begun to expand my own preserving and making kefir yogurt!
My favorite memory of my dad is cutting and splitting firewood on a cold day in East Texas. Preparing for the following winter. But of course cold for us is warm to you guys. Btw you are my favorite UA-camrs.
Eric’s sigh after the first bite said it all. Your B roll is always so relaxing and well put together, great job. Enjoy your warmth. It’s making its way here to Michigan….37 degrees in a couple days. ✌️
The enchiladas with mole looked delicious. Have you tried adding a bit of dark chocolate to the mole? That's done a lot in Mexico and is really awesome.
It’s not just dark chocolate. The molé you are talking about has over 20 different ingredients not just dark chocolate. It can include black pepper, achiote, huaje, cumin, clove, anise, tomato, tomatillo, garlic, sesame seed, dried fruit, herbs, cinnamon, nuts chocolate and many more. Molé is my fav food growing up in Mexico. Even now when my wife makes molé y feel like I’m back in Mexico again.
I just love your videos! Watching the two of you in your daily lives is so entertaining and calming. Your photography is stunning. Thank you for everything you two do.

It was 48 here in Anchorage last Friday evening through Saturday. Insane. I remember checking the temp and it was 36 and knew it would be that and then going out to do some things in the driveway and not wearing a jacket then checking and it was suddenly it said 48! In the past 21 years I've been here, it has NEVER been that warm in Anchorage in January. It makes me wonder what this spring and summer have in store for us. 😮❤️
I'm a 47 years old hungarian, who had the fortune to spend 3 weeks in Alaska in 2010. That trip was one - if not "the One" - of my best trips in my life, and until now i visited close to 30 countries in the world. Arielle and Eric truly thank you for sharing with us your life, with your videos - i think i watched all, it took me some months - i can relive my fantastic feelings, and i can remembrance the most beutifull place in the earth!!
When we camp we place them directly in the fire to get them really hot before using. We then oil, put them in the fire and turn often. Works like a charm. We also have one waffle iron per person.
I like how you had to give Eric props on the waffles 🧇 Arielle. That’s alright though I love watching you make rolls and bread. The wildlife at the end was splendid. Big Love & Keep walking in the light ✨✨✨
Who would think a video of maintenence and chores would be relaxing, but this one in particular was. These maintenance and repair videos generally are not on my favorite list of all your videos, although I look forward to all you do and always watch each one several times over the course of viewing your channel. This video was so well done showing the tasks done by Eric, interspersed with the house, property and animal care by Arielle. Then some of my favorite viewing is always your cooking. And Arielle, your editing was so superb, especially when taking a breather, like in real life, of relaxing enjoyment of your environment at just over 20 minutes in. You show the magical wonders of Alaska that exhibits why all your hard work is worth it. Most impressive for me is your work ethic where you join forces to do all the big and little tasks vital to your lifestyle. I've never, ever seen 2 people work so successfully as a team in such endeavors. Then while sharing your meal, your love for each other swells with a gentle kiss and a smile. How we all would give the world to have that joy in our lives. At least I can get a vicarious inkling through watching both of you. Thank you for that.
Really happy to see you guys and are surviving the winter. Definitely going to try making your enchiladas and I sooo can’t wait for spring and all your videos of your harvest and foraging and thank you again for sharing your life with us we appreciate everything you do and teach us and hope you have a blessed winter
I know you welded an extender on to that other wagon connected to the dogs wagon. But I personally would have drilled a hole down after welding and put a bolt just in case the weld didn't hold at least you would have a hole there to replace a bolt or the bolt would keep it on.
How do you guys manage to take mundane, everyday living & turn it into art? Seriously. As so many people have noted, your vlogs are so relaxing and fun. I save them to view the way you save the best piece of chocolate for last in your Valentines Day candy box. Wowthanks Arielle and Eric! Now I need to buy a blowtorch to start the fireplace! It was 26* Sunday night in Florida and I used a mere match on our fireplace. Our organic pineapple farm and all the citrus and Florida crops are at risk right now with the 2 40* rainy days (too cold for tropical plants) and another freezing frosty night coming this Saturday. All our hard work....peppers, tomatoes, celery, citrus, banana, pineapples, etc close to ruined now....😱. @Simple Living Alaska. Wow same temperature in Alaska as in Florida 40* and rainy!

@pinsch Runner Oh, I'm so sorry. So devastating to lose crops, especially trees! Too many people think you've got it all covered with "technology." I've read about how much work and all-nighters are needed to keep the fires/heaters going, protecting vast acreages of crops, and lots of prayers. Again, very sorry. Praying u can maintain what you have left and these losses don't present a lasting burden on ur farm.

I couldn’t agree more ! … 🙏☘️😘
I love how you don't take things for granted. Knowing how hard you work to get your food, you have a sincere appreciation for what you eat, whether it be meat that was hunted or veges from your garden. It is good to be grateful.
Blueberry waffles are the best.
I'm not the only one who likes this channel. 113,000 views on the first day. Well done.
The ariel views of the water and mountains and the videos that you capture the wildlife around is so beautiful! I am sorry to hear about your chickens but you seem to have it under control now. You guys really do live a great and simple life.❤️ I enjoy your channel.
TRULY enjoy all of your Videos . I'm 75 years old, and started on my journey to ALASKA. BUT FELL IN LOVE IN COLORADO. HAVE ALWAYS BEEN A OUTDOORS MAN. LOVE YOU BOTH , TRULY TAKE CARE AND BE SAFE!! ALWAYS HENRY W JACOBS.
it's strange how watching other people work after working all day myself is so enjoyable. And i'ts good to hear Eric has another new 'it's probably the best thing Ive ever eaten in my life' meal ;)
The nature footage and editing is simply amazing, as good as anything I've seen on National Geographic or any other platform, and I even found it to be therapeutic, had to watch it twice. Awesome work!
Another awesome video!! No phony baloney stunts and set ups just to get viewers, but real, honest to goodness, day to day activities that we all look forward to and enjoy so much!! Has to be the best one on UA-cam!! And now time to make a snack after drooling over those luscious-looking enchiladas. Thank you for sharing with us, love you guys, stay safe and happy!!💖
I wish you'd consider doing a daily video for February! You just make my day whenever a new one is posted.
Aren’t the new uploads just absolute mood lifters? I’d be ecstatic for even two per week. (But I understand they’re busy people.)
I'm in Michigan. When I'm outside and it's really cold, I think of the 2 of you in Alaska. As beautiful as it is, I don't think I could handle it. lol...I just love watching the 2 of you work as a team to build a life that many of us will never experience. Thank you for sharing your life. You made my day! God Bless you, and your furry and feathery friends. :)
Just what I enjoy...mechanical fixes, bee check, chicken status, wood chop, hi Boys and unbelievably beautiful photography tidbits!! Not to leave out outrageously great looking food. All rolled into an entertaining video. Thanks so much. 👍❤️🥰
I literally laughed out loud when he took your first bite and the “ohhh, that’s weird, I meant to actually cheers you on that one…” 😂
They always have little blips of humor that I feel like no one ever catches! I laugh out loud all the time at their casual humor
Eric so handsome and smart. Arielle so very beautiful and positive. I love watching you guys! Thank you for sharing your love and passions with us. Thank you!
It’s always such a special stop for me to get on your channel. Your drone footage is excellent! What spectacular scenery! You two made excellent use of such mild weather doing all the necessary tasks for your homestead and the special food for those chickens ! Two disciplined adults living your best life. Susan
I'm sorry you lost some of your chickens. They are all so beautiful and well-cared for.
Thank you for a safe and comforting place when the world doesnt always feel that way. Love your cooking, chores and adventures. All is right when watching your videos. Blessings
It's funny when someone says "it's been so darn warm lately" and it's like 30°. Can't wait when it's fishing time I like watching you guys catching fish. 😂
The difference between the stove waffles and burner waffles were quite significant, to say the least😂😂
FWIW, I just love the respect you show to each other and that you show to the dogs. You are very good people.
One of the best things I ever did for myself was making a tall stump (waist high) just for splitting kindling. The ergonomics are so nice, your knees and back will thank you!
What an excellent idea
You guys are so great together. Remind me of my wife and me. I'm so blessed to have such a loving wife. Keep the wonderful videos coming, and God bless you all.
Is there anything Eric can’t do?! You both amaze me…ty for another awesome video!

You work so hard. I dont know how you keep going. I watch you every time you post. You work hard but you take the time to enjoy life so important. When yall grow old you will have so much to look back on and have so many wonderful memories. Love yall.
Yay! I was just wishing last night for some at home winter meals!! I love watching your meals. Y’all are fun and creative.
Their meals are the BEST!😋😋😋
I would love to see a Q&A or a day in the life of you guys!! Love watching your channel
Is there anything Eric does not know how to do? I love y’all’s channel!! Your cooking always inspires me the most, but I love all of your adventures. Much love from Texas!
Another beautiful episode of the days in your life in Alaska that you so generously share with us. The chores, the repairs, the cooking and tasting..... all part of the magnificents!
Hey guys! How's your other property down the road coming along? I know you have cleared the land but have you started building yet? Would love to see your progress!
Did all my laundry and dishes today, split green oak and took a bath in my #3 wash tub, life is good and it's amazing how warm 32 feels when heat comes by wood. I start my Alaskan adventure next year at 62 years young.
Hi Illia Family, congratulations for 550k subs. My partner and I love your channel. Thank you for bringing joy, inspiration & love in a time where life is a real downer for so many including us downunder in Perth City Australia. What a team you guys make, what a dream you guys live, definitely our dream that's for sure. A daily dose of SLA really does make our day, we can't sleep well without one these days. My partner and I both agree that our relationship has improved the more we watch this channel, so thank you, we love the Illia family and the life journey & adventure you share with us ❤
I love to hear the chickens "singing". In your next life Ariel will be a famous Photographer and Eric will be a famous Chef.
Erik is an everything guy. He knows how to do EVERYTHING! But let me tell you, a man without a good woman is nothing ;-) He's got a good one
They already ARE!
They both are that now!
@@Flowergurl2000 oops true.
@@ewakraft5770 yes, you are absolutely right.
Simple test to avoid sticking and ensure the waffle iron is hot enough: flick some water on it.
If it skates around (leidenfrost effect) it's hot enough. If it slowly sizzles, or not at all, you're headed for sticksville (even with oil)
The drone footage is breathtaking. Truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing the beauty with us.
Lol Eric loves food- he’s had so many “best food I’ve ever tasted” meals. So awesome.
I missed seeing Bandit in this video. I am so thankful for all the wonderful content you put in your videos, plus the drone views. I especially enjoy your cooking; you both are so creative!! I have begun to expand my own preserving and making kefir yogurt!
I too missed seeing that handsome Bandit. Hope he is doing ok.
He was there at the end! I was watching for him because he wasn’t in the first part!!
My favorite memory of my dad is cutting and splitting firewood on a cold day in East Texas. Preparing for the following winter. But of course cold for us is warm to you guys. Btw you are my favorite UA-camrs.
It can get very warm in Alaska in the summer ,when we were in Fairbanks a few years ago at the end of August it was 82 degrees
The shot of the snow removal from inside the polytunnel was great - I love that you are always trying new ways to show your normal routines.
Eric’s sigh after the first bite said it all. Your B roll is always so relaxing and well put together, great job. Enjoy your warmth. It’s making its way here to Michigan….37 degrees in a couple days. ✌️
Arielle is left handed!! I never noticed before! Now I know why I love her so much! LOL God Bless you both.
Is there anything this couple can't do?! What a team 💕
Thanks for the beautiful fly-overs with the drone! Love seeing the gorgeous landscape!
Great video as ever you two but the drone footage and wildlife with that music combo was OUTSTANDING!!! I wish you all the success in the world!!
Eric is all man
Do it all .. amazing
Thank you for sharing
The waffles look good to me
Stay safe and blessed
Another great video as always. Not sure how to feel after seeing chickens eating better than me. 😉 Looking forward to seeing the next video already. Take care and have a blessed day ahead. ❤️🍀
We appreciate the tech that goes on behind the scene. No cameras, drones or editing computers to diminish the simple ethos. Your work is quite the respite from our personal yoke!
Im loving the longer videos. Can't ever get enough of watching. Makes my day!!!
Perfect videos for anyone thinking about your lifestyle. Everything from pancakes to welding to chicken poop. The reality of it all. Your the best. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so jealous of your project days! With 3 little kids, I’m lucky if I can get one project even started. Loved all of the scenery in the middle, makes me want to plan a trip to Alaska. And those enchiladas looked amazing! Thanks for another awesome video!
I just LOVE THE TWO OF YOU! You are not afraid of anything. You just March forward so sure of yourselves! It’s to amazing and inspiring to see. Thanks for sharing your adventures with all of us! 💕👵💕
I love how y’all treat and take care of your animals. Wonderful!
Warm day, 32°. 😳😳😳
You are loved. By your many followers. THANK YOU!!! 😍😍😍
Lovely music. 👍👍👍
Nothing like the feeling that comes with a full woodshed, freezer, and pantry in the middle of Alaskan winters…
I love how you two interact with each other and work together. Wonderful. Blessings Helena Montana
My closed caption thinks your chickens are "LAUGHING"😂 Thank you for the much needed break in my day! Much love from Ohio!⛄
Such a beatiful place. I'm not sure I could handle the cold weather, but you sure have breathtaking views.
I'm glad you got a break in the weather to get some needed projects done, stepping ahead!
Really happy to see you guys and are surviving the winter. Definitely going to try making your enchiladas and I sooo can’t wait for spring and all your videos of your harvest and foraging and thank you again for sharing your life with us we appreciate everything you do and teach us and hope you have a blessed winter
The drone footage and music is so amazing and beautiful!
BTW, Arielle's look when Eric ate the bite was priceless LOL!
Y'all are such fantastic Cooks to come up with your own touch is out of this world and I could tell dinner was fabulous,,, great job guys ❤❤❤❤
You guys should put together a cook book 📖
I drool so much watching you guys cook sometimes!!!!
You keep in the mistakes-Ariel’s woodstove waffles-and act like normal, albeit extremely hard-working, people.
Before you guys, I always thought of Alaska as cold & dark, especially in winter. You’ve shown me the beauty. So thanks for that.
@pinsch runner on no, hadn't seen the news about the cold temps in FL. Hope u fared ok. Prayers for u
@@sknap2728 just had another weekend of sub freezing temps here in Florida, this time 3 nights in a row. Many crops lost. I lost many of my dragon fruit, vines, papaya trees, and other tropicals. 😡🥶😱
@@sknap2728 yes, we slept midnight til 2am and then out in the fields again. Painful to go back the next days and see plants and trees wilted like jelly. Yes most people are clueless about where their food comes from. Thx for your kind words
What a crazy winter! We in SW WA state had 10 days of Christmas/New Years snow! Practically unheard of near the Columbia. Snow then crunchy snow then ice before icy rain finally took it away. Now weve been having warm days and cold nights but clear for a week... but our normal rain is supposed to be back Thursday...we'll see... you got a lot done. Glad to see that mod on the dog house sled... it was pretty unbalanced. Hope that the regulator cleanup lasts awhile... the cooking looked amazing as always... well the woodstove waffles not so much but hey just put less on the plate before closing next time! As said many times thanks for sharing and especially the wildlife in this one. Still my favorite You Tube channel!
