  • Over the last few years the Keto diet has become extremely popular and like most diets in the world there is money to be made. This leads to a lot of advertising and overselling of what the diet actually is and what it entails. So beyond the hype and marketing does Keto make sense for you?
I break down the 5 reasons why you should maybe think twice before starting. If you decide to do Keto let it be for the right reasons.

I have been eating low-carb for over 20 years. I am a sugar addict, and for me, keto is a healing way of eating. Several times I ate wrong foods for me, and the cravings immediately returned. Each time, I gained weight rapidly and had to recover by going back on keto. I am 74 years old, and I feel better now than I felt in my 30s. Abstaining from sugar and refined carbs has leveled out my moods, helped me lose weight and have more energy.

Although I find the title just a "tad" misleading...maybe incomplete would be a better term, your points are spot on. If you don't have a real reason and desire to live a keto LIFESTYLE, you will ultimately fall off the wagon.
I was a type 2 Diabetic, and started Keto 2 years ago, my A1C dropped from 8.3 while on a full insulin regimen, to 5.8, without a drop, or a single med at all for that matter, and I feel like a new person. My Dr. and nutritionist all pushed me to eat 2500 calories a day, 75 grams of carbs. They basically wouldn't listen when I told them I was having trouble just eating 1400-1500 calories a day. I was a super macro counter, and just the stress of knowing I had to plan for another meal accompanied with the testing and injections all the time put me into a real depression, to the point where I was off work just trying to cope. I spoke with a therapist a few times my depression was that bad. My eyesight also deteriorated to where I needed glasses full time.
One thing I learned, is it's my body, and ultimately, it's up to me how I treat it. I did a lot of research, and found Keto. I didn't consult with my doctor, or with my nutritionist, but I did buy a Freestyle Libre blood glucose monitor and ketone monitor. That allowed me to track my levels as frequently as I wished, without the constant poking. I essentially became my own test subject. I picked a day, and went full-on Keto, still macro counting and logging everything. That day was the last day I took insulin.
After about a week, I was feeling MUCH better, sleeping better, and the nerve pain seemed to be subsiding. I could also see the steady drop in my blood test results, the levels were steadily dropping. Not a lot, but it was a steady drop. I must add, when I started, I was 348 pounds (158 kg). I am 6'3"(191cm) tall, and quite muscular, but before diabetes, my average weight was 240 pounds (109kg). The medications and attempt to keep eating that 2500 calories had me gain over 100 pounds (45kg)!!
6 months into Keto, I called my doctor. I told him what I had done. He asked me to get a blood test done so he could check everything out. A week later, he called me. He essentially said, whatever you're doing, keep doing it. All my levels were normal. Cholesterol, enzymes, A1C, liver and kidney functions, all of it, perfectly normal. By this time, I had lost 50 pounds (22.5kg), 4"(10cm) around my waist and very seldom ever had any more nerve pain in my feet. The only reminder of the whole ordeal is the fact that I still need glasses due to the damage to the vessels in my eyes because of the diabetes.
I may change up my diet from time to time to be more protein based or more fat based now, but I still maintain fewer than 25 grams of carbs per day, 0 sugar. It truly has become a lifestyle. I don't say I CAN"T eat this or that, but i choose not to eat this or that. It has to be a conscious choice. If you go into anything saying you can't eat or do this or that, you are punishing yourself. If you simply choose not to, then you don't feel the resentment and negative emotions and connotations that arise from the use of CAN'T. Choosing to do something is always the easier path, and that simple step will put you into a mental space where you not only feel better physically, but emotionally as well. If you find the positives (of which there are many), and focus on them, it really is quite easy. Do I miss pasta, not really, there are so many other meals that actually taste better, it's easy not to miss it. Do I miss bread? No, but in all fairness, I have found a recipe and tweaked it to my liking, that is essentially flax bread, but without the flour. It rises, looks and tastes just like flax bread. I have a sandwich nearly every day for lunch, or toast it at night, spread some nut butter on it....yumm!
I guess what my long winded speech really amounts to is, with so many positive benefits, it's really easy to see and FEEL the good in Keto, and that makes it so much easier to stick with it. Don't look at it as a diet. It's just a new way of eating, where you will discover so many new and interesting recipes, many provide by the man, Sahil himself, that you will find you actually get excited about the journey and the new discoveries. Diabetic, a bit overweight, or just looking for something a bit healthier, you may find the solution you have been looking for with Keto. I did. Just remember, I can, but I CHOOSE not to. Your body will thank you.

I agree with your points, very well presented.
Now, I wouldn't say I've been doing keto very long, just 1 1/2 years. However, within the first few months, I completely reversed my type II diabetes. There was a month this summer where I had to return to the US for a family matter, and I fell into my old bad habits. I gained weight and felt horrible. Upon returning to the UK, I made it a point to get right back into keto. It wasn't easy, but the results were undeniable! It only works if you keep away from the foods/carbs that trigger an addiction response. It's different for everyone (and I'm talking about store bought, highly processed stuff). For me, it's all baked goods, pasta, and ice cream.
I wish Sahil and everyone who watches a very happy, healthy New Year--may it be the year that brings us all the blessings we deserve.

I lost 70 pounds on the Keto diet in 18 months. I was under doctor's supervision; one who specializes in the Keto Lifestyle. She was encouraging, informative, sympathetic and supportive. Then the pandemic hit. My doctor had to close her practice. Without her guidance and encouragement I began to flounder and drifted back to my old eating habits. Mentally, I became lost and discouraged as my weight started to go up. All the health benefits I had gained from Keto were destroyed. I gained 40 pounds back and I don't feel well. I started doing Keto again on August 24th. To date (10/8/2021) I have dropped 21 pounds. Physically I feel pretty good. I'm trying to keep a positive attitude, but I am struggling. I've never been much of a meat-eater and most of the 'legal' veggies on Keto make me sick. My go--to foods were fruit, pasta, rice, corn, all the high carb veggies, sugary sodas, and sweets. The one thing about Keto that I do like is intermittent fasting. It helps me to stop focusing on food that I should not eat and refocus my energy to planning meals that are low carb. I must be brutally honest, for me the Keto diet is not sustainable. It feels cruel, restrictive, depressing, and exhausting. So, how do I deal with the negativity, the anger, the oppression that I feel on the Keto diet? I take it one day at a time; one meal at a time. I am a carboholic. I am genuinely happy that so many people have lost weight, improved their health and do so well on Keto. You covered many of the reasons I recognize in my attitude, for not doing the strict Keto diet. I appreciate your honesty. While I don't keep to a strict Keto diet, I take what I learned from my doctor as guides for not going back to old eating habits. I am 73 years old. I would like to enjoy the rest of my life in good health, both physically and mentally. Sorry this post is so long. My best wishes to you and all your viewers.

I just want to thank you. Your honesty is immensely refreshing, and the info you give is very useful. I did strict keto for around half a year, and I honestly can say that it’s the best I’ve felt emotionally in my whole life: like a zen monk, at peace with life (I have a tendency towards anxiety, so the change was amazing); It also helped with weight loss. I haven’t continued it because my wife finds cooking a source of joy and family integration, almost in a spiritual way. We are Peruvian, so foods tend to be high carb, with rice and potato everywhere. 2020 was such a hard to year, that I decided towards regular meals that made everyone happy and gathered sharing in the table. But now I know I have a tool that is more powerful than anything I know for managing my anxiety.

The evidence is mounting that virtually all doctor and nutritionist recommended diets are appropriate only for people who are already in good health, but harmful to those who need to regain their health. At the heart of many of the most common diseases today including diabetes, heart attack and stroke, is inflammation, caused by decades of carbohydrate abuse and seed oils. Unfortunately, those continue to be included in most "recommended" diets, making it all worse.

Why non-medical people blame doctors is...
      A. Doctors say eat balanced diet..
      ? What is balanced diet
? We have been eating balanced diet throughout our life
B Doctor's should understand Nutrition is the main cause of all aliment.
? Body type - food type
      ? Importance of vitamins
      ? Deficits and additives
      C. Even-If Doctor's know - they don't tell us as they will lose lifelong income out of patients.
? Hence those patients come to Google youtube to find what is a food type for them.
? What is balanced diet for them.

hay there... i am 35 (years old). i started the strict keto when i was a tween (9-13). i had bad epilepsy (or seizures) since i was 5-6... and no meds worked for me. now i am on the regular keto to the loosely based keto. loosely base means i guessamate on the scale. anyway... my dr said to try keto, not to loose weight but to control my seizures. and yes it works wonders. oddly enough my strict keto included the pod based peas (legumes). i am trying to say... there is a lot of types of keto. we are used to the strict or regular keto but there is a lot of other keto to chose from too (like loosely, targeted, cyclical, and lazy man keto). i'm rambling so i will stop... thanks for my rant about my keto story.

I was totally carb and sugar addicted when my body had had enough in January 2016 (age 59) and one day woke up feeling like Iʻd been playing NFL football for 20 years and suddenly quit -- and wasnʻt on any painkillers. I hurt absolutely everywhere. I felt fine as long as I didnʻt move anything, but anything I moved, I was almost in tears. Bending over to pick up after my dog was excruciatingly painful. Getting out of the car after a few minutes, painful. Mowing my yard, painful and exhausting.
It took me months of research, and I learned about cutting out grains, so, aha! I did that in May 2016 and that helped a lot. It eventually reduced 70% of the pain and I lost some weight and felt better, but I plateaued, and there was still some pain and I couldnʻt figure out why. What was causing all the inflammation?
The following July I learned by watching a Dr. Berg video that it was the sugar. I needed to cut out all sugar. I learned from him that that meant sugar, honey, maple syrup, agave, FRUIT -- why had I never heard to cut out the fruit before?!, all sweeteners except stevia or monkfruit.
Two days into no sugar and no grains and I was totally, 100% pain-free.
I went through several difficult weeks of going off sugar, with my fluctuating energy levels and insulin trying to rebalance itself, and eating way more green leafy vegetables than my body had ever processed before, and finally I started feeling good. The flexibility returned. I lost the rest of the weight I needed to lose. In my total journey, starting in May 2016, so pretty soon Iʻll be 5 years grain-free and 4 years grain- and sugar-free, I started out as a size 18-20 and now Iʻm a 6-8. I can go without food for days and not feel bad. The hypoglycemia I had since I was a first-grader disappeared. Iʻm smaller now than I was anytime after 6th grade.
I have never cheated (except for an intermittent fasting cheat once in a great while, extending my fasting window too far) because I know how painful it is to my body, eating sugar and carbs. Iʻm not going there ever again.
Iʻve also done the research and know that at least with mice, if they do the keto diet and then quit, and gain it all back, itʻs much more difficult if not impossible to get back to the place they were originally with keto. Iʻve done too much hard work to get me where I am today. Iʻm not going to jeopardize my success or my feelings of health and strength and flexibility and pain-free-ness and endurance.
I see keto as a life-long commitment. And itʻs fun and enjoyable! How many keto mug cake recipes have I tried? Not enough yet!!

I'm a 78 year old male and have been on Atkins for 25 years now. This was a life saver because it stopped me from feeling starved all the time. No other diet would stop me from feeling hungry all the time. I am now the same weight at 78 as I was at 19! I have lost 82 pounds and kept it off. It is not a restrictive diet. When I'm hungry I eat. I remember what Dr. Atkins said about the restricted calorie diet he was on before he came up with his Atkins diet. Atkins said that he had already eaten his daily allowable calories by first coffee break. That summed up my feelings before the Atkins diet. I'm in better shape today than I was at 19. How many people can say that? If you don't know how to cook then learn! There are more low carb recipes available today than you could ever use in ten lifetimes! There is absolutely no reason to ever get tired of a low carb diet.

I think that's exactly the way a lot of people think of keto...all of the bacon and steak your stomach can hold. I started keto in November of 2019. It was easy, simple and I lost 20 lbs. in about 2 months and everybody noticed. I felt better, had more energy and my blood work was great. I guess this is nothing but an excuse, but after the virus hit and I was at home a lot more, I got bored and started eating carbs again. Let me tell you that it doesn't take long to gain it all back. Those fat cells never go away, they just deflate and when you eat bad, they're very eager to just fill back up again! The great thing about it the diet was that I never got hungry. I could literally go ALL day on a mug of coffee with whipped cream. It really satiates you.I 'm planning on going back on it this month. Happy New Year Sahil! I've got to grab your cookbook and start using it again!

Good video, thanks mate. I am 65 and have been a sugar addict for 60 years ,and I mean a REAL ADDICT, so 6 months ago when the doctor told me I would die of a heart attack unless I went on Statins it was a shock for me. I stumbled across Keto by chance and I am so glad I did . The first 3 weeks were shear HELL, I had terrible withdrawal symptoms by cutting out carbs, cakes,Mars bars ,Snickers bars ,Kit Kat’s, you name it, if it had sugar then I would eat it. Converting my body to burn ketones was not easy so anyone going into this having been on a high carb diet for a long time should be prepared for a rough ride, but , it is worth it. I now just have one meal a day, am rarely hungry . I know at my age I probably have done to much damage to my body but if you are younger than me then please do it, you will feel so much healthier and energetic once you have acclimatized to Keto. Don’t listen to the scaremongering by the doctors, they do not even get taught nutritional medicine. By the way, like your music, I am a headbanger too, and grew up with Ozzy Osborne so that makes me a granddad headbanger. Lol Rock on and Keto hard fella

My only slight rebutal is that many people have to be on keto for a couple/few weeks before they can start to truly see the benefits, realize all the food the can eat, and get over sugar cravings and addictions. so for someone considering it or who hasn't been on it long enough they might think it is unsustainable or too restrictive. But if they give it a try they might change their mind.
I feel like people should try it for 30 days no cheating and then consider those questions

I am a type 2 diabetic. I started Keto to lower my blood sugar. It did help a lot. More than the medication I was on. I did loose about 13 pounds. A good chunk of that was water weight. I have transitioned to Carnivore for the hormonal benefits. I gained back the weight I lost but am feeling much better. Now I am starting to transition to a hybrid between Keto and Carnivore. Dr Ken Berry and his wife call it Ketovore.
You are definitely correct in that calories matter. What I am finding is that as I heal, I am getting less and less hungry. I sometimes even eat only once or twice a day because I generally am not hungry for breakfast and some times lunch has me full enough that I don't feel the need to eat dinner (sometimes but not often). This is reducing the calories I take in daily compared to what I used to eat. You are also correct in having the right mind set. If you go into this with the mind set that this is a diet and not a lifestyle, you're setting yourself up for failure.

Then I went back to normal food and my weight crept up, so then I started severely restricting my food to one small meal that I would have in the evening....my weight didnt drop and I was almost starving every single day and would binge....I tried portion control, vegetarian, raw food diet, fruit diet..nothing worked ........
......then I discovered Headbangers Kitchen and went Keto. Just finished a lovely plate of egg fried rice (cauliflower and pork). If I get hungry and need to eat something I just eat some dried fish (we have that here in Iceland) or a small can of mackerel.

I do intermittent fasting (18 hrs fast and 6 hrs feeding period) some time on weekends I do 20/4 without problems. I work physically and like to exercise on off days. It is a little challenging with my wife not being Keto, having to plan for 2 meals a lot of days. She tried and couldn’t. But she tries to blend our menu to accommodate both diets. I am not sure if I will keep Keto forever, I really miss my red wine and beer. Not that I overindulged with booze but I like my wine with a filet mignon or my beer on Hockey night. I don’t really miss sweets even if I always had a sweet tooth, and I never crave junk food. Even when my wife opens a bag of chips, I won’t even have one. Life is too short to do without the little pleasures.

Keto made my psoriasis completely disappear in just 4 months. Had it for 2 decades. It also helped my fatigue/neurological illness. It was hard work but I'm coming back because it was worth it!

Bro! You have my respect. I loved that you mentioned that you aren't a doctor, dietician, or a consultant. I have seen people taking advantage of innocent people and scamming them with ridiculous consultant fees and give them shit in return.
Being a Doctor myself, You sir, Have my respect.
P.S. I really think you somewhat sound like Vir Das.

I found keto to be the best life style for me, With all my health issues. The beginning was harder. I have to admit, most of my sugary cravings are gone. It is nice to see so many new bread alternatives recipes now.

I started Keto four weeks ago. It wasn’t to lose weight but was lured by the health benefits. The health benefits are really great and as a bonus I have lost 10lbs of fat too! Loving it!

2.5 yrs strong. So YES. It’s sustainable. I am keeping the weight I lost off. But it’s still a day by day battle. And I never got to my goal weight, but did lose 30 pounds! Which I had never been able to do until I went keto. ( and I spent wasted years on vegetarian, and 3 yrs vegan with no weight loss. THIS is what works for me.

I am 65 years old and have been doing keto for approximately 3 years. I was diagnosed with T2 Diabetes about 10 years prior to that but since starting keto, have not needed medication and my sugar levels have remained in the normal range ever since. Sometimes I struggle to keep the amount of food I eat under control, but I know if I don't keep the carbs low, my health will suffer.

Very true words! I still love Keto. The longest stretch I had it straight was 3 years. But I'm doing partly Keto since over 25 years, I think I will do it the rest of my life, strict or less strict.

Keto is no magic bullet, but it fixed the one thing I have struggled with my entire life, it gave me control over my appetite like I have never ever had. It’s made a huge difference in my life.

I'm on Keto for almost two years..this diet helped me to loose a lot of weight. I tried a lot of different ones and somehow i couldn't stay on it When I started with keto I was 350lbs now I'm 180.. it takes a lot of wheel power and work on yourself but it's worth it. It also helped me with my immune system and well selfbeing.. Now it became a life style I don't think I could change that , no I know I won't change that..
    Btw I love your clips

As a guy doing a short-term keto cut, I've simply replaced both of my weekly cheat days with fast days. Sunday sees me eating nothing and doing nothing, Wednesday is the same, but simply ripping it up in the gym.
Should keep those daily calorie requirements up while stringing me along at a confident deficit. As commitments go, it's no sleep 'til 6-pack over here.
I did notice that there are a couple of people have raised an interesting point about people failing to push into dietary changes at the turns of each year. Feels a bit strange to think about, considering that I can completely stick any change I make pretty much at time I recognise the need for one.

I have been doing a so called vegetarian keto (may not really be keto as per standard). I used to limit carbs to 50 or 75 grams per day along with keeping calories in control (less than 2500 cal) . Your videos were still helpful because i got the method. Used to replace ur chicken with soya chunks (may not be fully keto).
I did lose weight as much as I wanted. All i want to say is that any high protein and low carb diet works like keto. Keto is still most effective of all fat loss diets

Good points, I agree. Thankfully none of these applied to me and I've done great on keto. A "cheat day" for me is having something with artificial sweetener-- which is like once a month. I do love that I no longer have the desire to eat sugar or grains or starchy fruits/veg for the first time in my life, as I used to be quite addicted to them. That makes this the first healthy way of eating that is sustainable for me (reversed diabetes, off meds, down nearly 100 lbs).

A month and a half ago i went to the hospital as my blood sugar was way up in the 500 range. i was already on a diet two months before that and i had lost about 8kgs.still i got diabetes because of what i ate i.e potatoes rice and pasta .my doctor gave me meds but i also decided to follow the keto diet after some yt video watching mainly mr ekberg.i know i ll be satisfied with eating meat etc forever .my blood sugar has come down to normal lvls within this short time and i keep losing weight so for me it is magic.i went to the doctor again after one month and he was pleasantly surprised.my goal is to stop taking the meds and if i lose weight its an added bonus.i enjoy watching your keto recipe videos and you seem like a cool dude.i see keto as a lifestyle change along with walking more than i used to.i do 3k a day most days which isnt a lot but it used to be zero and i feel comfortable doing just that so.. .thank you and sry for being jibberjabbery :)

I was on Keto almost 2 years ago and dropped it too. I did lose some weight but I couldn't see myself eating that way forever. It felt too restrictive especially fruit-wise. Not sustainable for me. I'd rather do moderate carbs moderate fats and I manage to still lose weight while eating non processed carbs.

I do keto and intermittent fasting during the work week and then relax on the weekend but maybe skip sunday suppers. Overall I’ve lost about 10kg in the last year or 2 and I generally have a much better relationship with food. Like i don’t really enjoy sugar anymore and cook at home a lot more. Some weekends I stick to keto and sometimes if it’s near to my period I’ll have some extra carbs in the week.
It’s a bit slack but it works for me

I've been doing low-carb and keto for almost 3 years. I think the most liberating part of it is the fact that one isn't beholden to the mood swings and hunger that comes from eating a standard diet. My wife and I do things like resistant starch as well, but I've also incorporated the Targeted Keto Diet as well for days where I'm doing extensive levels of exercise. Fasting goes hand in hand with this way of eating and enhances mental clarity. Weight loss and maintenance is fairly easy.
