The S5ii is a huge game changer to me. I started out on a Panasonic GH5 because I've always preferred skin tones over other brands. I switched to Sony for the AF. But, now with the S5ii and S5iix, I am seriously considering the S5ii/S5iix. Personally, I don't shoot photos. Rarely, if at all. As much as I liked the S&Q/Video/Photo switch on the A7iv - which I owned before my FX30 - its not really all that important. Autofocus wise, there will most likely be future firmware updates on the S5ii to improve it. So, I don't think that's an issue any more. It's a tough choice. But, the S5iix is looking like a winner. Well worth waiting until May to consider. Who knows. I may not switch. But, the S5ii and S5iix are strong competitors to consider.
what lens would you recommend for the S5II. I currently have the A7III and use the Tamron 17-28mm f2.8 and Sony Zeiss 55mm f1.8. I shoot mainly videos (commercials, product videos) and product photography. I was thinking of investing into the A7IV but now thinking S5II
Great overview. I always love panasonic cameras. Used the GH5 for years, but switched last year to the a7iv for the autofocus and lens options in FF. Still love that and want to get an fx3 at some point, but the s5ii is pretty tempting to run back to lumix. I miss the shutter angle and stabilization so much!
Super fair comparison. I like that you get right down to business. Shot LUMIX in the past, but this ain’t your Grand Dad’s LUMIX. I shoot the A7IV today and would buy it again now even with the S5 II in play. I shoot more photography than video and to quickly switch back and forth between photo and video is just way too convenient. No doubt, the S5 II is the stronger video camera, but the A7IV is good enough for any video production I will be a part of in the foreseeable future. Bottom line: It’s great to have LUMIX back in the game! The S5 II is disrupting the market like the A7III did several years ago.
Buying the s5 over the sony is a no brainer for me the sony is more expensive, less features, worse ergonomy, overheating, less fun to use. For me as hybryd shooter the panasonic is a real dream camera for a affordable price
Hey Terry, first time I've seen one of your videos. I'm in the market my first hybrid camera and this was SUPER useful. Thanks for taking the time to pull it together, love your energy and delivery and for all the details! Cheers and blessings
I have the A73R and G9-GH5 and the sony gives a quality feeling- but shooting is more of a pleasure with the Lumix. One thing I believe is forgotten by most and kind of makes me think reviewers dont actually shoot w the cameras is the AF interface for pictures. In Lumix, even if you are in all-areas auto, if you move the joystick, you quickly get a smaller area that will be the focus area. For sony I have to change a menu to go to that type of AF. I hate that. But my reason for the A73R was resolution (42mpx) so i guess the S5 2 does not cut it. Maybe S1R II...
Yup. The feel of a camera (grip) is so important. The screen res even on the mk1 was so much better than the Sony. I've spent a fortune on Sony but I will slowly be moving over to Panasonic. Finally!
One thing no reviewer ever brings up when it comes to doing post stabilization with Catalyst Browse is that it doesn't do anything about motion blur caused by camera shake. This isn't a problem if you shoot at a high shutter speed, but if you shoot at 1/50 or 1/60, then you'll get these weird linear blurs. There's also the fact that it requires cropping the footage, which sacrifices resolution, on top of adding extra steps in the post workflow. It's just a clunky and far from ideal solution to poor IBIS.
Thanks. I liked how fair and balanced you were. IMO the S5ii hiden cooling fan,and NEVER having to worry about overheating is a game changer and makes the S5ii a clear winner for videographers.
I pre ordered the S5IIx (Currently using the GH5II) I love the GH5II but I have to use manual focus pull all the time and it is not ideal. I think the only down side is when I want to do 4K 60 the ASPC crop but I can get wider lens for those situations. I shoot in studio and only use 2 lenses 12 - 35 MFT and 7.5 MFT so I am OK with the L mount lens selection. Gonna give the 20-60 Kit lens a chance and then upgrade from that if needed.
If you can only choose one which one would you get? Main focus would be photography like weddings and sweet 16 with some senior portraits and some video.
I would set the shutter to either the front or top dial, then leave the rear dial unassigned. You can always change iso or white balance by pressing a button. So then you have 2 dials for shutter and aperture, and won't be using the back dial.
Terry, what a great review. You've said what needs to be said that no one else has made clear. You've said things that make the Panasonic a great pleasure to use---the lack of which makes it more difficult to get good results with Canon and Sony. thanks! HANDS DOWN BETTER VIDEO. I own both cameras. See if you can guess which one I'm selling?
Man you did a GREAT job summing this up. Ima stick beside the a74 tho! You made a strong point about the downsampling. I don't really feel the need to record in 6k since 4k has been quite sufficient. But getting 7k quality in a 4k package is something I've definitely taken for granted.
It's crazy because you said everything right in your video, most reviewers doesn't give proper explanation about IBIS or video modes, some test the camera with just one wide lens for the IBIS and draw a conclusion about that. I lost some hours to watch a lot of videos about the S5II when I should have just watched yours. The only thing is about Catalayst, it's a nice feature but you need high shutter speed, it's crop (so you lose field of view and resolution) and need post processing. Indeed overall, the IBIS of the S5 II is way better from 20mm onwards.
I would really be interested in an R6 Mark II vs S5 II comparison. The R62 punches closer in terms of video capabilities than the A7IV and on paper beats the S5II in photo specs. Would definitely be interested to see how they stack up.
Sounds like I just made my decision, save myself $500 and go with the Panasonic Lumix S5ii. Lenses are great but who needs 1,000 lenses I don't. so I am good there. but this camera is badass. I was looking at the Sony ALPHA 7R V but now save even more money and go with Panasonic.

So for some reason people who prefer to shoot 1080p FF in slow-mo from 50 to 120 fps they should do that with old glitchy Contrast base AF. Same for all of those who were hoping to upscale 1080p 50-120 fps to 4k - no PDAF. And taking into account it's a video-oriented hybrid camera, it looks like without a firmware update in the next several months almost perfect camera becomes garbage. Excellent Review!😎😎
The A7IV is about 2k on Ebay, thanks for the vid!
Does the S5II have 6k 60 or 4k 120 fps?
no, it even focuses very slowly and sometimes can't even focus at 1080p 60fps at full sensor. Meanwhile, the nikon Z6 can do this
A camera that does not overheat/shutdown is more important to me. Sony a7iv fails in this way and becomes a waste of $2500 when it shuts down and becomes unusable.
As a person who does half his professional work in photography, a7iv is a no brainer and the a7r5 is a god sent.
💯💯
Iove your channel man
Where ya get the Durango from?
Good video, very fair comparison.
Own both, don't fight, LOL. Honestly, hope Sony comes back with a good counter, love both brands.
S5ii gives Sony a few sleepless nights. 😄😄😄💝💝💝
A74 gets the job done, but Lumix S5 mk II adds so much more fun!
I like that analogy. Actually it’s spot on
S5ii hands down
Dang, the intro made me realize I suck lol
Shame on the people who cooked you 🤣 I mess up too even with scripts written for videos. Great stuff bro happy I discovered your channel!!
This just shows how the A7IV is already becoming dated for video S5ii and for photos A7RIII or higher.
Honest guy ✅
Was really set on s5ii but L mount lenses aren't as cheap as Sony 🥲
Great vid
Good comparison.
If you can't get good results........"you just freaking suck". LMAO. I've shot with both and prefer the S5ii. Your review is spot on!!!
Oh Yeah 😎
Neither - I am sticking with my Fuji X-H2.
Lumix s5II
Don’t believe the Hype terry. Sony a7iv is superior.
Watch my last video dedicated to the a7iv… it was the last video I posted
For me botogrpahy and videography both are equality as important. So that alone won't make the decision.
You Said you prefer what😱I don't believe my ears bro🤧
Panasonic has Awesome body no lenses! Sony all day!
yes it does ! You can use natives, sigma DN DG or mc21 adapter with canon EF lenses. PDAF works for all!
S5ii better video
A7IV better hybrid
Would be better if you did not say the full model name every. single. time.
Would be better If you stfuuuuuuu and go make your own video
@@TerryWarfield Sorry I thought you were a man to appreciate honest feedback. My bad.
Maaaannnnn 😅
I'd hope it would be better for video since the a7iv is over a year old now.
The old S5 has most of this except AF.
@Big Cook s52 has 6k open gate video s51 has not and no sony under 5000 has 6k or better
Valid. We know these manufacturers leapfrog eachother about every year
