Idk, the autofocus isn't on sony's level and it's still cropped 4k 60fps whereas the sony does 120fps. Then there's the lens selection (wildlife, pros won't use slow sigma lenses with heavy vignetting, people on a budget can't snarch cheap tamrons etc on ebay) and possibility to build a system with various different cameras for different purposes. The autofocus update is the bare minimum to be relevant at all and should probably have done years ago. But, it's the value king and some features are amazing.

The upcoming one might just be the ticket as the streaming aspects and external SSD you mentioned would make it worth the premium and wait. Funny how Lumix was criticized for not having Phase Detect AF but not a lot of mention about just how bad Sony's SteadyShot Image Stabilization performs. I just sold my G9 and A6400 to help fund the purchase of the S5II. It is the only camera that I can say is a worthy successor to the Lumix G9 (such a good camera). I'm glad to see that you covered more than just the PDAF on the S5II. There's so many really smart and usable features packed into this camera. Yours is the best review that I've seen so far on the S5II. Well Done!

Great review of a really great looking camera. So glad Panasonic has finally made a camera with awesome auto focus. Gh6S with phase detect. Common Panasonic! Thanks for the review and I’m glad that Panasonic reached out to you again as they did with the gh6. 🎥
Yep. It won't work in the higher frame rates and drops back to DFD only. Most reviewers missed this and I confirmed it with Panasonic. At the time of filming this is how it operates.
Awesome! I have said it many times, that the original S5 is better (for video) than the A7IV or A7c except the AF. Now that the AF is sorted, it looks like a winner, especially for video.
Thanks for the comment mate. Your reply went to spam for some reason. If you get your hands on the camera at some point I'd love to see what you think of it. :)
Excellent video, excellent camera, excellent model moves. I like the pre-announced cameras, too, as it gives time to save. Thanks, and looking forward to more.
Panasonic G5 was my first mirrorless body, so I have a soft space in my heart for them. If they had done PDAF in 2018, I'd have saved so much money since then. As things currently are, I think I'll wait for a couple more bodies before switching back to Panasonic. The S5 II is really great for video, and I especially love the 6K open-gate recording, but I'd like a newer sensor with faster burst rate for stills, AI autofocus for subject recognition, FF 4K60 for video, and how about built-in USB webcam features, too? I hope the successor to the S1 has all these things and more. I feel like S5 II would have been a perfect camera in 2019, but competitors have some compelling advantages. For lenses, I really like how the L-mount is looking right now. The primes from Panasonic look amazing, and Sigma has some great values, too. If we could just get Tamron to bring their zooms to L-mount, I honestly think L would be better than E for me.
That's how i see it too. I'll also wait and see how the af really works, and if there will be firmware updates. Some say it's not up to par with sony and it would make sense that it takes time to perfect the technology. For people who focus manually, the s5 and the other dfd cameras might drop in price and be pretty tempting.
Honestly I think it makes sense to sell your Sony kit while it still has value and just invest in the S5II (or S5II X.) 4K 120p is nice but I don't know that it's worth the $1500 (US).
Great review! Thanks so much for testing all this! In the color science test between the s5 mark i and mark ii it seems the s5 mark ii is more detailed, where you on the exact same lens and settings? Cheers :)

Great video! Deciding between a7iv and s5 II for hybrid with more focus on video. Love straight out of camera as I don’t use LUTs and prefer canon and Fuji colors. Which would you choose ?
The S5II 100%. Way better IBIS, better filmmaker tools, better build quality, better audio options, less rolling shutter and way better resolutions and aspect ratios. The only advantage the Sony has is all-i codecs.
@@jaymills1720 what sort of shooting are you doing? My favourite prime is the 35mm for the studio, the 24mm outside and the 50mm when I want it to look epic. Great video mate! What do you think about the 20-60mm kit lens that it comes with? Do you recommend buying it or would a Sigma or other lens be better?
Great review. I have been holding off the s5 due to autofocus issues. Just bought the mkii. Hope to use Canon lenses using MC21 converter. Have always loved Panasonic. Colours are great, and I also love the in body timelapse feature. Those night shots are so good.
Tks for a great review. I ll need to do wireless livestreaming do you think it's better to go S5iiX or just go with s5ii and buy a wireless hdmi transmitter? Tks
The internal streaming is a cool feature but if you're planning on doing a dedicated streaming setup in the studio for example, a switcher or encoder would be my choice if you have a computer that can handle streaming. The Live streaming feature works well but it's better for on the go style live streaming.
I don’t think it does but the AF is so good now you can just move a one area box or touch the screen to move the AF point around. It still has the 4k live crop mode which is a great little feature.
If you’re doing UA-cam the S5II is more than enough. If you need the high end codecs then wait for the S5II 😎 for most of my work, the regular S5ii will be more than enough.
That's backlit and running fast. It outperformed my A7SIII in this tough test. It caught me though which is pretty good. For regular stuff and all the tests it worked fine.
Thanks for the video. What would you say is the best LUT to get VLOG to match the natural colour profile's treatment of skin tones? I see most LUTs for this camera preserving a greent tint on the skin - it seems to be everywhere, and I haven't seen one which can really make the skin tones seem gently natural again. Any thoughts? Thanks so much for the video - very helpful. Also, have you noticed any lack of responsiveness with the auto-exposure feature whilst filming yourself moving from a lighter area to much darker one?
There’s no green tint on this camera it leans magenta compared to the GH5 big time. There’s no LUT that you can apply to get you the same colour otherwise just shoot with Natural. The closest one you can adjust to get better colour again is the Nicest LUT or even the standard Panasonic 709.
for indoor vlogging, would you rather go with S5ii + kit 20-60 zoom or SH5ii + primes from Olympus (12, 17.5 and 45mm which I already have)? There are good offers for S5ii which makes buying SH5ii a question mark now. Thanks for a piece of advice or opinion
They are two separate mounts. If you buy the S5II with the kit lens you'll have a great first lens. I posted a video about the kit lens if you want to take a look.
unsure if i want to buy another lumix or not. the g7 has ruined my image of that line of cameras, and how do you eliminate the background being so blurred out? im not a fan of that on film, because if i buy this camera it will be for filming only
I thought i was going to switch to the lumix ecosystem until you mention the PDAF doesn't work on 100fps while i use 100 fps quite a lot for my work. It sucks that my a7iii, a camera from 5 years ago has eye AF even on 100fps which lumix in 2023 can't even have proper AF in 100fps. But it is what it is, so i guess will have to wait for Lumix to make their move or maybe wait for a7v instead. Regardless, I'm glad Lumix finally get back on the right track, just not yet ready to fill my needs
Cheers much for all your hard work, time and product knowledge and is a real contender! For me though I seen background pulsating, and when you first ran up the Sony was quicker, and slower was better to my eyes from transitioning to the background, also the x30 should be compared to it and I think Sony's colours and dynamic range is better plus finally what I've changed to at the beginning, compared to all UA-cam reviewers including filmmaker friends and that's that I'm totally over the same old same old film looks, that everyone including Hollywood are doing, it's all boring to me now and I thank Sony for the FX30 that changed the same old same old, film look game and I can see how they trick everyone by not just making it about specs, heck they're latest r5 most filmmaker autofocus feature let's you precapture/which was on my 2015 Sony tablet haha along with its self organising photo app, 7 different faces and will autofocus on them all even if they're moving in and behind from each other! Unfortunately it's mainly become about specs, where as I'm all about substance and getting completely new different film looks! Cheers anyways Shane I appreciate all your dedicated in seeing that we're making the best choices for the brands we love 👍
Great comparison. Love it. Do you think it would be worth waiting for S5 IIX over the S5II if one buys S5 II now in a good deal /used market, that would be more judicious? photo/video 50/50 ( Hybrid). Thanks in advance.
Is it possible to live stream with the regular S5 II? Is the steaming benefit that you can stream without a computer? In my country the S5 II will have a big offer upon launch and it will be considerably cheaper than the S5 II X. I do NOT need the other benefits of the S5 II X. Will I be missing in the streaming department? Thanks!
Hi Boyan, You can't stream directly from this camera to the internet. You'll need an computer or encoder to do so or wait for the S5IIX. The GH5II also allows you to stream to the internet without a computer. I don't stream outdoors so for me, I don't need the streaming capability. It's up to how you will work. I think most people streaming outdoors will probably use their phones. Shane

You get APS-C crop on the S5II which is a larger area than M43, but not really any "better". The GH5II has the same field of view in every mode where as it changes depending on the mode with the S5II on those 4k50 or 60p modes.

If you’re doing UA-cam the S5II is more than enough. If you need the high end codecs then wait for the S5II 😎 for most of my work, the regular S5ii will be more than enough.
And as you saying how the AF system didn't fail once, at 9:05 you can see how it fails. Also few frames before. Bummer :)
That's backlit and running fast. It outperformed my A7SIII in this tough test. It caught me though which is pretty good. For regular stuff and all the tests it worked fine.
What nd filter u use
None.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy then how u shoot at lower number aperture?
You think firmware will uncrop 4k 60 or will we ever see 6k 48 fps from firmware?
I doubt they'll do it, sadly. They are probably saving all of that stuff up for their S1H replacement or something.
for indoor vlogging, would you rather go with S5ii + kit 20-60 zoom or SH5ii + primes from Olympus (12, 17.5 and 45mm which I already have)? There are good offers for S5ii which makes buying SH5ii a question mark now. Thanks for a piece of advice or opinion
SUPER VIDEO !
How does the S5II work with MC21 and Sigma EF lenses?
I haven't tested it as I don't own any EF lenses. I think Tony Northrup had one in his video.
hi, I have g85 I’m planning to buy this S5ii, does lens of g85 can fit this one?😊
They are two separate mounts. If you buy the S5II with the kit lens you'll have a great first lens. I posted a video about the kit lens if you want to take a look.
I’m excited that adapted EF lenses reportedly work with video CAF! Did you get a chance to test any adapted EF mount lenses?
Hi Luke. I didn't get a chance to test that out as I don't own any Canon gear but it would be a great thing to check out in the future.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thanks Shane, noted.
Great overview of a powerful looking camera. I hope Panasonic will now bring the PDAF technology to their M.F.T cameras in future 🙂
unsure if i want to buy another lumix or not. the g7 has ruined my image of that line of cameras, and how do you eliminate the background being so blurred out? im not a fan of that on film, because if i buy this camera it will be for filming only
I wish it had the focus stack mode like the G series cameras. That was super useful for macro and food photography
Regardless, I'm glad Lumix finally get back on the right track, just not yet ready to fill my needs
i am very confused in S1 focus breathing is have same problem in this camera ? answer please
Focus breathing is a lens issue. The S Series of Primes have next to no focus breathing. Check the lens you're using.
Thanks sir
Will you ever record in Pro-Res or ALL-i or need SSD recording? I won't, so my choice is the S5II standard.
Thanks!
Hi Boyan,
You can't stream directly from this camera to the internet. You'll need an computer or encoder to do so or wait for the S5IIX. The GH5II also allows you to stream to the internet without a computer. I don't stream outdoors so for me, I don't need the streaming capability. It's up to how you will work. I think most people streaming outdoors will probably use their phones.
Shane
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you Shane!
Finally some clarity!!!
So it turns out I can confidently go for the S5 II
It has still not arrived (maybe too many orders from bigger markets. I live in Bulgaria) The promotion is until end of March so hopefully it comes by then.
I do not know why one of the biggest stores with prime store locations in the country is offering a discount on launch but I will take it! Lol
Plus the S5 II X official launch in Europe is in June!!!
In the EU the Lumix S5 II and S5 II X arrive last and coat the most unfortunately… so a deal is welcomed.
How well would this work for guitar videos? (I know you should be able to tell me 😂) Would the autofocus be ok?
It works great for guitar videos just leave human tracking in and you’ll be good to go. I’ve used it on my guitar channel a few times as well
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Thank you. That's good to know!
Will this camera have BRAW as I can find no info on which raw format will be possible? People seem to be assuming BRAW but it could just as well be ProRes.🤷♂️
I think it’ll have raw via HDMI in a paid firmware but I could be wrong. Maybe check the specs of the S5IIX
Hi! Interesting camera review esp. against the Sony a7siii. Wonder if u might have attempted any copy work with stand etc. using the 96 mgpx of 35 mm slides? If so, did u us the Sigma 105 mm Macro Lens? Or other lens? If so, plz share results & maybe a video to follow. 😎😎
I didn't test the camera with that sort of work sorry. I just did some product and landscape photography but that sounds like a good idea! :) I'll see what I can do.
Are you based in Melbourne?
Sold!!!
Hi, I thought the 30 minute limit can be defeated on the higher resolution modes if you set the fan speed to high. Is this false?
Unless something changed since I got the camera. The recording limits are 30 minutes above 4k
@@GeekyNerdyTechy You don't say! Thanks dude. Great video!
Excellent video about this camera. The strongest pro is the features you get for this price. Features that Canon R6 Mark II and Sony A7 III for 700 USD less.
Hase the GH5m2 whit the S5II in Crop Mode 4K 60P Different in Video Quality and which is that?
You get APS-C crop on the S5II which is a larger area than M43, but not really any "better". The GH5II has the same field of view in every mode where as it changes depending on the mode with the S5II on those 4k50 or 60p modes.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Is the Bild Quality and the Low Light better in APS-C from S5II or the GH5M2 is better?
Hase the S5II Overheating Issues?
This doesn't overheat, it has active cooling. Most Panasonic cameras don't have issues with that like Sony or Canon.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy In 4K 60P it's ok in a all day filming situation?
