@@eludereluded Oh man, the IBIS on the S5II is 🤯, my RS3 has been collecting dust since January, and it just transformed my shooting experience.
The AF is good, but I would say either the Sony it was more plug-&-Play, with the S5II I found that I had to be more specific about what mode to use in different scenarios, but once I learned that I would say it’s as reliable as the Sony.

@@9adriano21 I noticed quite a few complaints of the wobbles in the corners with IBIS at wide focal lengths like 20-35mm, but then on some peoples videos it doesn't really seem to show at all. How has it been for you?
I do more lifestyle/run and gun shoots so I want to avoid big rigs and gimbals, so I'm considering the S5 II mostly for the IBIS at this point, since I find most of my handheld out of my A7 III to be unusable due to jitters/shakes without a stabiliser/rig.

Thanks! Yeah that is a big bonus if you have a lot of EF lenses. I've seen some mixed results, but some lenses perform really well. The only EF lens I tried was the Sigma 28mm and it worked well with the MC21. I also use that lens on Sony camera with MC11 and it works great. I think in general the Sigma EF lenses play well with the Sigma adapters.

Sony a7IV have more dynamic range on the paper because internal noise reduction is strongly applied. This is also why on sony camera we have the impression that their camera manages noise better. With noise reduction added in post production, the S5II exceeds 13 stop.

@@huzainisahmawi I would be curious to see your version and not just a contradiction without detail or proof. Josh's tests seem strange to me, because I was able to do my own test (with an s5iix) and on this same contrast test, and I had slightly better results on the s5iix, the dark part was slightly more lit and the highlights quite similar. I had done the same test with an xh2s and even the xh2s had a better result than the a7IV. Concerning the figures, unfortunately, the fact that Sony applies a large noise reduction distorts the results. Because the figures that Josh gives are those of the “clean” stops. Noise reduction increases this figure. This value will be much lower on a raw file for example, because more noise or other noise reduction is not applied.

@@peterra2532 Yes with noise reduction turned on in camera or applied in post the Lumix dynamic range would be the same as the Sony. They both use the same sensor. This is seen in cameras like the A7S3 which again has noise reduction that cannot be shut off. Compared against the FX6 where it can be controlled. The FX6 scores lower in dynamic range despite being the same sensor. Yes noise reduction gives the appearance of more dynamic range.

Stabilization drive me nuts on Canon & Sony, the S5II is a nice step up in real world use cases. AF for me on the LUMIX is great, they have a few kinks to iron out, but in their first iteration of hybrid PDAF, I think it’s great and a slight step behind Sony. The Lumix s5ii lacks two features that I find also important for many users, when recording 1080p 48/50/60/120fps video with full sensor will switched to contrast focus and when taking pictures with flash (godox V1, v860ii...) mounted on the camera body Liveview Effect (Constant Preview) will automatically turn off can't help you adjust the exposure displayed on the monitor when taking pictures. Yesterday, lumix released a firmware update that improves focusing when using AF-C, and I'm very pleased with this first update that delivers excellent focusing speed on the Lumix no inferior to other cameras. I hope they will continue to improve on the remaining issues so that the Lumix will be an even more well-received camera.

Fair review. I have two A7IV's and an S5. I bought the Sony's due to the terrific auto-focus and 7K oversampled video. Awesome stills and video camera and, as your video shows, measurably and visibly better rendering and dynamic range than the S5. And just to share this with others who may be considering the A7IV, but are concerned about overheating, neither of mine have suffered from this after a year of shooting video, even in 100+* temperatures. The only caveat to this is my video clips rarely exceed 5 minutes at a time - which probably is the same as the majority of video shooters. But it's a terrific camera, and I've found the battery life is even slightly greater than the S5. As for the image stabilization, at focal lengths of 30mm and wider, I find the stabilzation (in Active Stabilization, not Standard) to actually be slightly better than the S5. Beyond 30mm (for me) the S5 is noticeably better. But this is only while walking - otherwise it's a draw. The Hybrid Shooter actually has a video proving this out. I love my S5 and use it often, but honestly think the Sony A7IV is still the better hybrid option (at this time), even while being criticized unfairly for faults most of us never experience in practice.

    • @BorisTheArtist
      @BorisTheArtist 9 місяців тому

Why do you keep S5 then? I'm curious because I own an S5 and I plan to sell it and get A7IV. For me, the deal breaker is HDMI latency on Lumix, and I'm shocked they didn't fix it with their new cameras, which makes their Raw over hdmi unusable, hence useless. So I wanna try Sony. Though I'll probably miss shutter angle and luts.

    • @ronphillips7952

@@BorisTheArtist - Great question. I like the handling/ergonomics of the S5 slightly better than the A7IV and, in low light shooting, think the S5 actually has better image quality - though the differences are slight unless it's extremely dark. As for the latency, I don't use external monitors and such so cant comment, though I suppose it comes down to processing power/speed. As for LUTS, I edit in Premiere Pro, so plug them in there. I missed the shutter angle as well, initially, but found an easy and useful work-around. I programmed my 60P and 120P settings to 1 and 2 respectively on the PASM dial, so switching between 24P, 60P and 120P is quick and easy, and forgetting to adjust shutter speed is no longer an issue. It's turning out to be a terrific hybrid camera, though I think I'll always like the ergonomics and handling of the Panasonics, even though the differences are slight these days. People complain about the short grip of the Sony's, but with an L-bracket, or bottom bracket, or cage attached, it's a non-issue.

Oh, I love it when Josh cures my gear acquisition syndrome! I was blown away by the dynamic range difference. I know that the A74 kills my old R5, but I thought on paper the S5 II would be similar. But the A74 actually can outperform the C70 if you push some extra light shadow noise reduction in post. I would love to see a comparison between the A74 dynamic range and something way above its weight class because I feel like guys with cine cameras don't like to talk about that lol

Guys with cine cameras could care less. They light their sets and control their lighting and get paid to create content. They are more concerned with the utility of a camera like form factor, xlr inputs, internal ND, robust codecs and frame rates with video centric tools like histograms, false color etc. 90% of the people who obsess about stuff like autofocus don’t make a living creating video content and would probably never use either of these 2 cameras to their fullest abilities.

Heres how someone explained it: “Shutters are flimsy, and easy to damage. They also don't protect much from dust.
If the shutter is closed, it's more likely to be damaged. A DSLR has a mirror in front, but with mirrorless it would be very easy to bend the leaves. It's easy to clean a sensor instead.
Dust collects on the parts. A closed shutter will get dusty, then the action of moving the leaves for an exposure will knock dust off, and allow it to fall on the sensor, so it won't really protect from dust anyway. If it did, you wouldn't need to clean DSLR sensors, though it's only the mirror that's closed there.
So, it's mechanically easier, less likely to get damaged and just as dusty to have it open”

It's really weird that gerald undone tests old S5 gets 1,5stops better dynamic range than S5II. 🤔

What video is that? On his s5II video he gets same dynamic range as on the s5.
Both 12.5 stops signal to noise ratio of 2

@@Valerossi0 Yes, slope based dr medium 0,5, it gets same amount dr, but in high 0,1 it's 8,92 vs 6,49. So I think that original s5 have lot cleaner image.

My A7III/IV and S5 have better image quality than my S5II. The new video engine from the S5II uses too much sharpening when sharpness is set at the lowest setting, and this new engine also smooths fine detail in low light. Only V-Log profile is way less impacted but the V-log from the S5 remains slightly better.

We are getting to the point, we are splitting hairs that the Client could really care less about…. The A7IV looks too clean 🧼
I bought 3 S5ii for Events and this debate was raging in my head for a minute 😅. Ultimately the stabilization and the long record time avoiding overheating did it for me not that autofocus as an option is no longer a big issue.
