This camera is objectively a better video camera than the A74 and its cheaper too. The AF might not be as good but it will improve with updates. Almost all other specs are either on par with the a74 or just plain better (like ibis, exposure tools, resolution options, & other menu options). I'm a Sony user and don't plan on switching due to the amount of sony lenses I already own. But pound for pound this camera is really good at that price.

agreed.....the S5iix is what the a7IV should have been. a7iv was overpriced for sure. They should have kept it at 2000. But the pandemic scared them into raising it I think.

Only problem is that you lose PDAF when you are shooting in slow motion for certain resolutions ... it ends up switching back to the contrast focus, which we all hate ... oh and 4k slow motion footage is cropped ...

As an A7IV shooter, I am impressed with how good the S5II is, and it’s their first gen PDAF. I see no compelling reason to go back to LUMIX, but for someone looking for a competent hybrid shooter, this seems to be well worth a hard look.

I think this is an amazing camera now, and agree that it will get better with firmware updates. Lumix cameras always do. I would not hesitate to buy it over the competition, not for any one reason, but for dozens and dozens of reasons. Since AF is no longer a deal breaker, it is time to focus on all of the other hybrid features the S5 II offers creatives. I've been using a Lumix G9 for 4 years. It does everything I need and of course I want a new camera. I have been seriously considering the Sony FX30 and abandoning Panasonic. But the S5II is intriguing. For $200 more, it offers far more capabilities than the APS-C FX30. Something to think about. I was really impressed with the lack of focus breathing of the S5 II combo. I know Sony has solved it in software with some of their lenses but I was surprised you didn't mention it because it was very gross on the Sony. Finally, your wife is a peach.

I think the Lumix S5ii is at a point now where it's good enough for some applications. As a filmmaker where I can ask an actor to just 'do that scene again' this is absolutely good enough. But for something mission critical, like a wedding, I'd maybe not be as confident. The IBIS on the Lumix is probably the deciding factor here. From what I've heard and seen on youtube it's incredible for in camera stabilization.

I don't know what Sony or Canon are like, but I'm coming from Nikon, and I have to say the Lumix port covers are far better. Lumix has a metal pin for the hinge, with Nikon, it's one piece. It has a plastic hinge that eventually breaks or tears off.

Great comparison, thanks! It looks the S5II is really improved a lot on autofocus. However, I have just bought the S5 4 months ago! ;)
Since here must be a lot of S5 fans, I would like to borrow a little space to ask some questions, which confused me these days: I have connected my S5 to Ninja V and carry the camera on a DJI RS3 gimbal. As the S5 does not support blue tooth connection with the RS3, I connect the S5 to the RS3 with a USB-C cable, to use the red button on RS3 to start/stop recording.
When I switch on all these 3 equipment, the monitor on S5 is off (How can I turn it on?), the Ninja V is on. At this point, the red button on RS3 does not work (why?).
If I unplug the USB-C cable between S5 and RS3, both monitors on S5 and Ninja are turned on, but obviously there is no way to control the camera by using RS3.
If I disconnect Ninja V and then connect S5 and RS3 with the USB-C again, the monitor on S5 works, and I can control the camera using the gimbal.
It seems the 3 devices cannot work properly at the same time. Did I miss any settings? Many thanks in advance!

20:23 I believe it was a spec that it takes a while to start the camera at the beginning of the day.
A Japanese UA-camr (theTakaTube) verified that if the camera is turned off for more than 12 hours, it will turn off completely to save battery power and will take longer to start up.
It is similar to the difference between putting a computer to sleep or shutting it down. Just as you would put the computer in sleep mode if you want to start working on your computer immediately after a break, you can turn the camera on once beforehand if you need to start shooting immediately.

I was hoping you could help me decide between the Lumix S5 and the new S5 II.
For context, I’m starting out with photography and I’ll be going to film school soon, so I want to buy a hybrid camera that performs great for both stills and video, that will also grow with me as I develop.
I’ve found the S5 with a lens for £1400 and the new S5 II is about £2300 once you factor the lens in. The S5 has almost all the functionality I think I’ll need and at this price it’s a great deal but I’m unsure if I should save up a bit longer and get the newer version with all the updates (i.e. better autofocus and unlimited video recording at 4k etc). Which camera would you recommend buying in my situation? Is the S5 at £1400 too good to pass up or should I hold out for the S5 II? Loved the review and thanks in advance!

24:32 : Didn't realise my S5 has no downconvert like the GH cameras have... The only time I had to have 1080P output on the S5, i was recording 1080P aswell so i didn't notice.
I had to go in the menu to double check after watching this part.
I am very curious to see some 1080P120 shots in APSC mode (both h264 or h265), do you know who can send that to me ?

Wow, your review is the first I've seen to mention the auto-switching to the EVF when held close to your body! As someone who shoots almost exclusively from the hip, this is really good to know. I got a little confused though-- were you able to find a workaround for the S5ii or only for the a7iv?

@@laylahassomethingtosay Definitely wait for the x with the added versatility which will future proof the camera the extra $200, it makes no sense to buy the base S5ii. Thats coming from someone who knows they really dont need the added options and actually prefers the look of the red ring and white text on the base model over the blacked out look of the x... Im buying the X on a interest free payment plan and paying it off slowly before release so it is a much more manageable purchase and then should I need a camera with good autofocus (I normally manual focus anyway, unless on a gimbal) I can just hire a camera until then.
That being said I do own an original S5 so I can make do until may. If you need a camera now, the S5ii is a great purchase and should you need higher image quality in the furture you could always sell the s5ii or maybe you're successful enough by then to just buy a second body haha!

@@jockslifeatliftvideoproduc8528 Haha yeah, I haven't got enough money to justify two bodies, but I have got enough to justify taking the plunge on the S5ii and later paying the difference necessary to trade up to the x, should I find that I need it. For me it came down to this...
      Reasons to get S5iix:
External SSD support. The other features seem nice, but that's really the only one that I could definitely see myself getting use out of.
      Reasons to get S5ii:
I like the look better. It just excites me more than the all black design and at this price point, I want to have that emotional connection.
Release date. I've got a couple trips in March and May that I want to record, and my current DSLR is really lacking in video features.
For what it's worth though, I think you're making the smarter decision than I am. They're both great cameras, and in the end my decision was largely driven more by emotion than logic😄 Still if I find myself constantly running out of storage or having problems with Panasonic's IPB, I might be cutting my losses to skip to your side of the fence.
And congrats on the new camera heading your way!! It sounds like we're both in for an exciting year😋

@@laylahassomethingtosay It sure is a shame that I cant have the X with the red ring under the drive mode dial... I dont get the appeal of the all blacked out design and Id argue it could effect functionality as itll be harder to read the text and symbols on the buttons at a quick glance. I bet you love your S5ii and be getting it much sooner than I will be hahah! Have a lovely 2023

Nice to see Panasonic finally learning from Sony, and massaging UA-cam influencers. Yes the phase detect is incredible, apparently competitive with Sony, and better than Canon and Nikon. The Lumix features were always the best for video, and with state of the art AF it makes Panasonic Lumix a very attractive option. However, I am much less interested in L-mount than seeing a GH6 M2, G9 M2, or GH5 M3 with phase detect. FF is okay, but I prefer the smaller size and weight of MFT lenses.

Question is, will it be as good in the low light as the a7iv. As a wedding videographer the a7iv is pretty incredible even when using 4k60 crop mode. Better than the fx30 as I owned one for a month before returning it and switching back to the a7iv. Better ibis would be nice for sure. The fact that you can go full frame in 4k30 if you need extra low light capabilities is insane

Panasonic fall's into the old saying "A Day Late, And A Dollar Short", I have invested too much into Sony bodies and glass to switch. I started out with Canon ten years ago, then switched to Panasonic back when the GH-5 came out, then finally switched to the Sony A7III, then the A7SIII, and now have those plus an A7IV and an FX3. Add the thousands and thousands of dollars of glass ( probably around $14,000) on top of the thousands and thousands of dollars worth of camera bodies (around another $14,000), and like most I am now too invested in Sony to ever switch. Long term Sony out smarted the competition by creating both better bodies and glass years ahead of the competition. I do like the ergonomics of the Panasonic and their video centric options like shutter angle. But I am a one man show, so I need the reliability of Sony.
