Great video as always man. It really is unfortunate, std lmao. That line "You fried rappers are glad i'm an idol" is because he (and a few others from BTS) were originally underground rappers. And they were criticized for essentially "selling out" to become idols. AgustD (Suga) is saying "You should be grateful i gave you a chance make something for yourself". Also you mentioning the callbacks to old school rappers in the rest; a lot of their inspirations are rappers like J.cole, pac, Kanye, Nas, A$AP... Their rap line is some of the most phenomenal stuff to come out of BTS.
BTS rappers are the best rappers in SK right now … when u hear them u will hear the difference and the rapping the production at a highest level. BTS has 3 rappers -So AGust D(suga)- dechwita , RM- joke, Jhope-ARSON are a must listen!!!!!
I don’t know why people told you he isn’t saying STD. He sure in hell is. Yoongi knows exactly what it means. He is a wordsmith. It fits with the other sexual double entendres in the song: D Boy, tongue technology, and he doesn’t actually say “turn you on” as the translation says. He says “Take you to Hong Kong” which is a Korean euphemism for making you climax. The STD reference is saying he is contagious and you can’t get rid of him. He is dropping bars. Never assume that the rap line doesn’t know exactly what they are saying.
I’ll be honest that’s one thing that’s kept me away from BTS rap line.. I love catching bars and inferring potential double meanings and metaphors but it seems many BTS fans don’t want me to think for myself and would sooner spoon feed me the surface level meanings 😭 for me, as a fan of lyrics, it ruins a lot of the mystique and charm of these artists because fans put them in a box in terms of capability
@@TeddyGreyOS I think people just get a little over excited. Don’t let it keep you away from some of the best rappers on the planet. Flows, lyricism, depth, cadence, emotion, stage presence, all top notch. They do definitely have some fixed messages they are trying to convey, like personal stories and stuff, but they also do a lot of layering and wordplay and deliberately make many songs ambiguous, particularly songs with the whole group, so they can be interpreted multiple ways. Explanation videos (like from DKDKTV and bookish theories) really help unpack the songs, after you have had a crack at them yourself, because with the limitations of translations and lacking cultural context you really do need the help they provide. Doolset is also the go-to site for good BTS text translations with context notes. Every album they make is a concept album and carries themes and messaging and songs laid out in a storytelling order. Books have been written about their music and colleges study their lyricism (really.) They have 8 solo albums out from just the 3 rappers. Plus rap line songs from BTS albums, plus pre-debut and collab and other work. The group has 20 albums as well. And Jimin has a solo album also.

Agust D stands for DT (Daegu Town) Suga backwards. It's Suga of BTS' alter ego and he always goes HARD on his Agust D stuff. Suga and RM of BTS were underground rappers before joining and although J-hope (the 3rd rapper from bts) wasn't he was a street dancer and has an incredible ability to ride a beat and switch up flows like nobody's business. Although Suga was putting stuff out at the time pre-debut RM was much more well known in the underground community and had a fearsome reputation, and he actually taught Suga some stuff which suga mentioned in some early logs. RM is undoubtedly the best rapper in BTS and is the main rapper for a reason, and Suga and RM together taught J-Hope to rap.
Agust d have 2 mixtape he release for free, few songs for my top recommendation is (Agust D, Daechwita, Moonlight, The Last) and a lot more, pls check em out and strm :D , his album is highest charting by any k soloist even tho it doesnt have physical and promo, he is amazing
I've never clicked on a video so fast! You're one of the first reactors who recognized the James Brown sample at the beginning, so thank you for that!! Suga/AgustD/Yoongi is who made me take Kpop/khiphop seriously and got me hooked. As a fellow Stay, I think I get what you appreciate, so I would strongly recommend RM-Joke, AgustD-Daechwita, BTS-Cypers (BTS's rapline), BTS-UGH, Ddaeng and Tear. I think out of all kpop songs Daechwita and Agust D are in my top 5 list for lyricism I love all the hidden meanings in the things he's rapping I figured out Agust D but Daechwita is next level I don't get some of the things in the lyrics because their like metaphors and idioms from Korea but it's so good.
What Suga is probably referencing with the "fried rappers should be grateful I'm an idol" is how in SK idols are frowned upon by the rappers/underground rappers. When they were still rookies, RM and Suga were told to their face by radio hosts that they sold out and "what are you girls now?" Because they wear makeup and how they dress. Suga is basically saying you're LUCKY I'm an idol, because i would destroy you otherwise. The guys were sent to LA predebut to learn about Hip Hop history and rap from people like Warren G, Coolio, and Tony Jones. They have an intense respect for the origin of the art form.
this is one of the members of bts. bts has NEVER been a pop group thats the box people try to put them in. they have 3 rappers and 4 singers and have many hip hop songs. they started as a hip hop group and branched out to other genres over the years but still heavily do hip hop songs. all 7 have solo music. the 3 rappers have solo mixtapes and albums too. all of bts members write and produce their music both group and solo they all write. especially the rappers all write their own raps. look deeper into them dont go by what media tell you. theyre not kpop theyre not pop they do all genres especially hip hop.
Yes those are my biases from both too (Jin too, I'm double biased in BTS) once I decided that Changbin was my bias in Stray kids I figured I really like aggressive marshmallows 🤣🤣

The BTS guys are actually taught themselves the culture of Hip hop and know about the history..... They love Hip hop, especially the Rapline. I knew he would catch it. You really have to check the song called JOKE by RM from BTS. By the way, RM stands for Rap Monster. But, make sure you find a video with English subtitles. It will blow your mind!
When he said " you fried rappers should be thankful I'm an idol", he is referencing when some undergound rappers insulted him and Namjoon for becoming kpop idols. Turns out, him, Namjoon and Hobi can out rap these supposed rappers. |And they are lucky they are considered kpop idols and not just burning the stage down in the rap scene.

The quality of BTS's rapline is DIFFERENT!! Suga (AgustD) has been my favorite (flow, cadence, wordplay, attitude) But J-Hope slapped me in the face with his album Jack in the Box last week, the consistent storytelling throughout is poetry and he went back to the roots of hip hop RM is the mastermind, he writes most of BTS's lyrics, he's got crazy charisma, word play, and sick delivery It's not comparing because they really got there own thing going but if i could say some inspirations they had - Suga (agustd): Eminem, Kanye, Kendrick -J-Hope: J Cole, Tyler the Creator, much more sing songy usually with boom bap or dance beats - RM: Eminem, Nas
So let me give you a little bit of background: Suga aka Agust D got a lot of hate and criticism when he left underground rapping to join a “ boy band” (BTS) even from people who he had considered friends. In Korea someone from a boy group or a girl group who sings or dances or raps, they are all called Idols. It’s not really the same connotation as we would use the word in English. This song is to all his former colleagues in underground rap that said awful things about him when he joined BTS, but he’s saying they should be grateful he’s an Idol now because those other rappers don’t have to compete against him anymore because he’s in a different category.

Chang Bin got it from Suga/AgustD. He is his junior and is a huge fan of Suga. No one was doing that before Suga. Also, GDragon, Zico, RM and Suga changed the game for rappers as idols (as opposed to underground). They reintroduced real rap into K-Pop. No, he is not talking about STDs. He's just spelling out his name. Although I'm sure he knows now. Koreans raised in the west would certainly have roasted him back when it came out. (Or perhaps not, he commands a lot of respect).

Agust D and SUGA are one. They're both Min Yoongi (real name). He goes by SUGA in BTS and Agust D as a solo artist. Agust D came from *DT (Daegu Town) + SUGA* spelled backwards. Daegu is a place from S.Korea where he came from and I think DTown was the name of his group when he was an underground rapper when he used to go by the name "Gloss", a literal English translation of his name Yoongi. If you wanted to listen to BTS as a group, it's a good start to watch their BTS Festa Room Live. It caters both their vocals and rap skills. It is heavily produced though since it is performed without an audience so if you don't mind listening to a live performance with some auto-tune used to achieve the sound they wanted (not that they need to), please check that out. Agust D or SUGA is my favorite rapper but all 3 rappers in BTS are equally good in different ways. Their vocalists are also unique made them complement each other's voices. Yes this is Suga from BTS. When Suga (real name: Min Yoongi) from BTS makes solo music his Artist name is Agust D. If you drop the D and the T and spell his name backwards it says Suga too. I know that’s really smart. D and T stands for Daegu Town which is his home town Always use subtitles. If there’s an option for subtitles always do it. That’s number one rule for K-pop fans. Suga puts traps in his songs to catch the cockroaches and it works because the haters never learn. Big Hit and HYBE take legal action against perpetrators of misinformation and vile comments towards BTS. To get a better understanding of our boys maybe watch excelestes videos this is BTS an introduction and then who is the BTS ARMY. 3 rappers 4 vocalist. Every one of them is so talented but together they are so amazing. His name SUGA is shooting guard his position in basketball which he loves to play. The Cyphers parts 1 to 4 are so good. bts rapline (which consists of Suga/AgustD, RM and Jhope) in my opinion is THE best rapline in and outside of kpop fun thing is that all three of them got their own style going on. SUGA and RM used to be in underground hip-hop scene in South Korea. All three of them have been hugely inspired by the veteren rappers from the west (Nas, J Cole, Kanye etc)

In Korea, an “idol” isn’t just considered someone people look up to, it is used to refer to kpop artists and them only, so it’s associated with being manufactured. Most idols do not write their own lyrics, the rappers only getting that role because they can’t sing, etc. They both got A LOT of backlash for leaving the underground rap scene and becoming idols, and were told to their faces that they were conflicting with hiphop, being girls, and they “had the talent, but went down the wrong path” or smth stupid like that. So basically it’s him clapping back at those “rappers” who looked down on him and rm and saying they’re lucky he’s not in the underground scene anymore or they’d have their assess beat 💁🏻♀️
I got into BTS through rap so I have to recommend these to rap lovers: solos by RM: MONSTER and RUSH (feat. Krizz Kaliko) solos by JHope: 1VERSE and AIRPLANE solos by Suga(Agust D): DEACHWITA and THE LAST by all 3 BTS rapline: UGH and DDAENG. Note BTS actually started out as a hip hop idol group so their music was and still is heavily influenced by rap and R&B, although the genres they cover are far reaching. D-boy because I'm from the D (he's from Daegu)...Another interesting fact about his name...it's his BTS name (SUGA) backwards plus DT for Daegu town (SUGA=AGUS DT=Daegu town....all together (backwards) Daegu town SUGA. He used this "alter-ego" type name because his personal style was so different from BTS he wanted it to stand alone under another name (not associated with BTS, per se). All of his solo works are under this name.

This was SUGA aka Agust D's first mixtape from 2016. He has another mixtape after that D-2, and he will be putting out a full album very soon. BTS debuted in 2013, so they have 9 years of experience, and RM and SUGA were underground rappers before signing with Big Hit and becoming trainees in 2010. Thanks for your reaction to our Agust D. Some wee points - you will most likely have heard about this from others, tho. First - and just incidentally - I don;t speak Korean, but it seems to me that it may be common for them to add a syllable to separate two consonants, so Techanology (which I also like), but also filum, geuround, goleud, mixeutape - more fluent speakers are less likely to do it, but his use of it here is inspired. Secondly, this song is from his mix-tape using his alter eg - yes, this guy is in fact Suga. Shortly after their debut, Suga and RM were on a small radio podcast at a hip hop festival somewhere in Korea, and the (much older and much more experienced) other rappers took the opportunity to be extremely rude to them, calling them sellouts because they had left the underground scene (where you don't get paid for your work or get fleeced) to join an idol group, and calling them girls for wearing make up on stage. They were still in their teens at this point and Korean culture is very much, you can;t call out someone alder than you to their face, so they had to bight their lips, and, after trying to explain their own point of view a couple of times and being talked over and name called, RM just said "well, you can think that way if you want to". And this is Suga's clap-back to those and others who also gave them hate.

It fits with the other sexual double entendres in the song: D Boy, tongue technology, and he doesn’t actually say “turn you on” as the translation says. He says “Take you to Hong Kong” which is a Korean euphemism for making you climax. The STD reference is saying he is contagious and you can’t get rid of him.

I think people just get a little over excited. Don’t let it keep you away from some of the best rappers on the planet. Flows, lyricism, depth, cadence, emotion, stage presence, all top notch. They do definitely have some fixed messages they are trying to convey, like personal stories and stuff, but they also do a lot of layering and wordplay and deliberately make many songs ambiguous, particularly songs with the whole group, so they can be interpreted multiple ways. Explanation videos (like from DKDKTV and bookish theories) really help unpack the songs, after you have had a crack at them yourself, because with the limitations of translations and lacking cultural context you really do need the help they provide. Doolset is also the go-to site for good BTS text translations with context notes. Every album they make is a concept album and carries themes and messaging and songs laid out in a storytelling order. Books have been written about their music and colleges study their lyricism (really.)
They have 8 solo albums out from just the 3 rappers. Plus rap line songs from BTS albums, plus pre-debut and collab and other work. The group has 20 albums as well. And Jimin has a solo album also.

I think out of all kpop songs Daechwita and Agust D are in my top 5 list for lyricism I love all the hidden meanings in the things he's rapping I figured out Agust D but Daechwita is next level I don't get some of the things in the lyrics because their like metaphors and idioms from Korea but it's so good.
What Suga is probably referencing with the "fried rappers should be grateful I'm an idol" is how in SK idols are frowned upon by the rappers/underground rappers. When they were still rookies, RM and Suga were told to their face by radio hosts that they sold out and "what are you girls now?" Because they wear makeup and how they dress. Suga is basically saying you're LUCKY I'm an idol, because i would destroy you otherwise.
The guys were sent to LA predebut to learn about Hip Hop history and rap from people like Warren G, Coolio, and Tony Jones. They have an intense respect for the origin of the art form.

So let me give you a little bit of background: Suga aka Agust D got a lot of hate and criticism when he left underground rapping to join a “ boy band” (BTS) even from people who he had considered friends. In Korea someone from a boy group or a girl group who sings or dances or raps, they are all called Idols. It’s not really the same connotation as we would use the word in English. This song is to all his former colleagues in underground rap that said awful things about him when he joined BTS, but he’s saying they should be grateful he’s an Idol now because those other rappers don’t have to compete against him anymore because he’s in a different category.

Agust D and SUGA are one. They're both Min Yoongi (real name). He goes by SUGA in BTS and Agust D as a solo artist. Agust D came from *DT (Daegu Town) + SUGA* spelled backwards. Daegu is a place from S.Korea where he came from and I think DTown was the name of his group when he was an underground rapper when he used to go by the name "Gloss", a literal English translation of his name Yoongi.
If you wanted to listen to BTS as a group, it's a good start to watch their BTS Festa Room Live. It caters both their vocals and rap skills. It is heavily produced though since it is performed without an audience so if you don't mind listening to a live performance with some auto-tune used to achieve the sound they wanted (not that they need to), please check that out. Agust D or SUGA is my favorite rapper but all 3 rappers in BTS are equally good in different ways. Their vocalists are also unique made them complement each other's voices. This was SUGA aka Agust D's first mixtape from 2016. He has another mixtape after that D-2, and he will be putting out a full album very soon. BTS debuted in 2013, so they have 9 years of experience, and RM and SUGA were underground rappers before signing with Big Hit and becoming trainees in 2010. All seven members will be releasing solo albums, and being the first one - J-Hope just released his album. I can link you his title track.

Some wee points - you will most likely have heard about this from others, tho. First - and just incidentally - I don;t speak Korean, but it seems to me that it may be common for them to add a syllable to separate two consonants, so Techanology (which I also like), but also filum, geuround, goleud, mixeutape - more fluent speakers are less likely to do it, but his use of it here is inspired.
Secondly, this song is from his mix-tape using his alter eg - yes, this guy is in fact Suga. Shortly after their debut, Suga and RM were on a small radio podcast at a hip hop festival somewhere in Korea, and the (much older and much more experienced) other rappers took the opportunity to be extremely rude to them, calling them sellouts because they had left the underground scene (where you don't get paid for your work or get fleeced) to join an idol group, and calling them girls for wearing make up on stage. They were still in their teens at this point and Korean culture is very much, you can;t call out someone alder than you to their face, so they had to bight their lips, and, after trying to explain their own point of view a couple of times and being talked over and name called, RM just said "well, you can think that way if you want to". And this is Suga's clap-back to those and others who also gave them hate.
