In reviewing this presentation I could see how someone could erroneously infer that it's an angry rant. It isn't we had fun filming this vid. Also there have been a few comments about the pistol under my armpit. That won't look good to flag half of humanity and the gun In the armpit doesn't work well if you have to take cover quickly. Some people have suggested that an auto can be partially reloaded by single loading a round into the chamber. Remember, the object of the partial reload was that you were intending to completely reload and then you were interrupted.
I think most of us understand, or should understand, that this comparison is a bit obscure. Any of the downfalls on both types of guns can be mitigated by either training or preparation. But to another point you have made several times in other videos, the overwhelming majority of scenarios are over well within in the fully loaded capacity of either a revolver or an automatic weapon. In the very few instances where reloading would be necessary, most of us would be screwed anyway. The minority that have had the training to keep their head while being shot at and could reload effectively, would also be the one that would probably carry extra magazines or speed loaders. As for the security guards you mentioned that have restrictions, I would assume they would have speed loaders at hand in addition to their loose ammo, just not on their belt. Either way, once shots are fired the situation has escalated to a point where other factors such as alarms and police calls would be initiated, the offenders would more than likely be looking for an escape, not a shootout.

I knew someone who shall remain nameless that carried a 1911 with 3 mags, it took him several years to discover that only 1 of them fed properly.
That is why i mark my carry magazines and when i go to the range I cycle rounds through all of the magazines I own.

I bought four extra magazines and gun came with two. This way I can go to the range with six loaded mags and shoot without having to reload.
Or be like me and buy 30 round mags for my beretta m9 and 33 round mags for my glock 17/19. Pretty much infinite ammo cheat code for real life. I hate reloading, just saying.

@@misterbaker9728 i usually carry 3 15 round magazines and 1 33 round magazine when carrying my g19c. 1 mag in chamber, 1 in left mag pocket, 1 in right mag pocket, 33 round in my inner jacket pocket. With the baretta its the same but with a different holster that has a magazine pocket. Most guns i own i have purchased with 2 to 3 mags from the manufacturer luckily and then got the others usually 2 to 3 after i save up for it or see a good deal at my LGS.
Also a side note: in the 20 plus years of shooting ive never personally had any of my magazines jam and only seen 3 m16 magazines jam in 60 marine corps rifle and pistol ranges training thousands of Marines. Not sure if thats just pure luck or a testament to Marines taking good care of their gear knowing we cant afford replacements.
I broke the rear sight on my 454 and it took at least 5 years to locate, purchase and install a new one. It cost less than $3. Laziness happens.
I meant to get a spare magazine for my carry gun 5.5 years ago. but that gun is a Pheonix Arms .25, mags are hard to find.
And i got a different gun after that, so I stop carrying it thankfully.
The point is, i still only have 1 mag and 30-some rounds for it. Some things just dont take priority.
You may have to use a single 30 round glock mag, shoot the gun one handed at a 45 degree angle and tactically hold up your sagging pants with your off hand. In that situation It's hard to reload an autoloader without dropping trou.
But what if you also have a blunt and lean?
from my experience and in my training i noticed that the 45 degree angle should be increased to a 70 degree angle (completely sideways) it not only increases accuracy it also increases reliability

@randomdoodification I've known a few pro-gun Democrats myself over the years. None were the socialist type and I found them to be more intellectually honest and consistent than other Democrats... and many Republicans. The honesty and consistency bit seems to be rarer and rarer these days among champions of either party. Oh, and I have a Makarov and bought two extra mags for a total of three the day I purchased it. :) I wish I had two more. It may be a Commie 9, but it is fun to shoot (few guns aren't, IMO) and quite accurate.
@randomdoodification Yep! And at least it is honest, too. It's blocky with a less-resistant finish and crappy European-style mag release, heavy for it's size, and not particularly powerful. But when you ask it to digest some cheap, steel-cased ammo and put those rounds in a nice, tight group, it will do so with the motivation of someone held in a basement by the NKVD.

@@Just_Pele I've seen some guys who carry spare cylinders on a piece of coat hanger wire and they just remove the whole cylinder for a reload. Most of them practice in Cowboy Action Shooting sports and the likes but if you were to ever rely on a single action revolver for self defense that wasnt something like a Schofield pattern gun where you COULD get speed loaders for, I dont see it as being a bad idea to practice that method and get good at it.
Many people don't consider the revolver to be obsolete. They're thought of as "timeless" .....it's been a relevant platform for 175 years! This test showed how they can hold their own!
@@markshippoli8918 He's not talking about all revolvers, he's specifically talking about single action gate loaded revolvers. Just about any way you cut it, they're pretty obsolete haha. They can still be used effectively of course.

I've been in a position where my agency issued only one magazine--or a revolver without speed loaders. This was during my military career from 1974 to 2010. Until the 1990's this also meant issuing only five pistol cartridges--from the 1990's on the Force Protection ammunition was either ten rounds or one full magazine depending upon being in a war zone. Sometimes it was possible to obtain more ammunition but no additional magazines. Being issued agency weapons (police, military, armed security guards) may mean being restricted to one magazine.
Great info; I didn't know this. I can't imagine a good reason for such policies.
@@bhoward9378 I don't know how good the reasons are, but off-hand I can think of two. First, the "armed" representative of a government office or corporation is regarded as untrustworthy. Second, the officially-armed person is vulnerable to being overpowered and their issue arms and ammunition will wind up in the hands of anti-government forces.
One smacks of poor personnel management policy and the second demonstrates a systemic failure to recognize and appropriately respond to the actual operating environment.

The problem with the reasoning behind ammo capacity is that it stems too closely from military strategy and tactics that are often out of place in personal defense situations. The line of reasoning is that more ammo capacity means an increase in superiority of fire, which can lead one to have both offensive and defensive advantages over enemy forces. Superiority of fire allows one to 1) engage multiple targets, 2) destroy more enemy forces or equipment, 3) suppress/disrupt enemy force movements, or 4) strengthen friendly force movements (i.e. advance, flanking, retreat, etc.). These advantages are clearly necessary to win battles and wars, but the problem is that superiority of fire is rarely necessary in personal self-defense situations, and I say this leaving statistics aside and simply thinking through this point strategically and tactically. In a self-defense situation, an individual who is attacked and trying to defend himself will likely be at two disadvantages: first, he will likely be surprised and have to react to the threat without complete awareness/information (whereas the assailant will likely have this advantage), and he will likely not have back up support from other team members or units (whereas the assailant may have this support). If an individual faces an attack from only one other individual, perhaps superiority of fire can be an advantage and deciding factor of the gun fight. However, so can marksmanship, accuracy, and the firepower of the cartridge. In other words, increased ammo capacity or superior rate of fire in a personal defense situation may not necessarily lead to victory. While "superiority of fire" and "firepower" are often used interchangeably, I use "superiority of fire" to mean the ability to maintain a sustained volume of fire at either high or low rates, whereas I take "firepower" to mean the destructiveness of a weapon system. The real question is, when can anyone ever truly know that they have the superiority of fire in a self-defense situation? What if the assailant is wearing body armor, has several extended magazines, multiple firearms, or even NVGs? Even if someone is likely to carry two spare mags for self-defense, is engaging and staying in the firefight to see who has the most ammo capacity ever a risk worth taking? No, the best strategy is to engage only enough to either eliminate the enemy, provide suppressive fire for a retreat or to flee, or worst case, take a defensive position, call 911, and wait for 911 to arrive. Moreover, every shooter has to legally account for every round that is fired in a criminal or civil case. The more rounds that are fired, the more difficulty one faces accounting for them. And, even if one is justified in the shooting, if one round hurts an innocent bystander, one's case will likely be lost. If one is outgunned in firepower and not sure he or she has the skill or firepower to eliminate the enemy, then the best strategy is to retreat/flee. If one is attacked by multiple assailants, then increased ammo capacity/superiority of fire is not going to give one enough of an advantage to overcome the surprise of the attack, the lack of backup support, and being outnumbered, so the best strategy would be to retreat/flee. With that being said, I think ammo capacity is overrated for personal, self-defense situations.
Most debates of personal defense firearms and calibers almost always take place with the assumption that the sole adversary one is likely to face is against human enemies, too. However, there are two types of personal defense: defense against humans and defense against big/dangerous game (hogs, deer, elk, buffalo, moose, coyotes, black bears, grizzly bears, mountain lions, or even aggressive dogs). In the case of big/dangerous game, firepower is almost always an advantage over ammo capacity, too. First, rarely is one ever going to have to face multiple big/dangerous game adversaries, so ammo capacity is not really an advantage in this situation. Second, the likelihood of getting multiple shots on any big/dangerous game animals will also be unlikely, and hunters can draw on experience on this point. Third, the idea that the foot-pounds of energy, or momentum, or velocity are the most important metrics of cartridge effectiveness is a fallacy: the truth is that the most important factor of ballistics performance is not how much energy is generated from a cartridge, but how much energy is transferred to the target. Lastly, the idea that the kinetic energy (foot-pounds) of cartridges in a magazine is additive is also a fallacy. Some people like to take the kinetic energy of each cartridge and multiply by the number of cartridges to say that the magazine has a total kinetic energy of the sum of all of the cartridges. For instance, 15 cartridges of 147 grain 9mm at 1055 ft/s has more total kinetic energy of 5448 ft/lbs than 6 cartridges of 240 grain .44 Mag at 1300 ft/s with a total kinetic energy of 5402 ft/lbs. The problem with this idea of additive energy is several fold. It assumes that several rounds were fired and hit the target. Otherwise, in the event where only one round has been fired or hit the target, then one round of .44 Mag at 900 ft/lbs is by far more effective than one 9mm at 363 ft/lbs. Moreover, the ballistic metrics fail to consider the reality of anatomy. Hundreds of deep needle pricks to a person are likely to be more deadly than one mallet blow. The problem is that the one mallet blow is likely to stop someone immediately because all of the energy is dumped at once. This point can be demonstrated with the effectiveness of birdshot vs buckshot vs slugs. As far as revolvers vs semi-autos, yes, semi-autos are lighter than revolvers, but the need to carry a full spare mag almost negates the weight advantage. And as outlined above, the advantage of the faster semi-auto reload compared to a revolver is tactically hardly necessary except to clear a malfunction.

The "hard to get magazine" and the "they don't made a speed loader for that revolver" argument is very valid. I've had a couple of those over the years and would hate it if that was the only option I had. I thank my lucky stars that I don't live in one of those "it's legal to own, but not legal to buy" locations.

For the first 30 years I owned my first pistol I only had one magazine. After I bought another that used the same magazines that came with 2, I also bought 2 spares, so now for the two I have 5 magazines. It does happen. My father has a top break .22 that belonged to his grandfather. No speedloaders for it in over 100 years of ownership. Again it happens.
Sure it happens, but do you carry one mag and a bunch of loose rounds, or do you carry 1 mag and whatever happens after that, happens. Or alternatively, do you carry an entirely different gun that has 2 or more magazines. Genuine question, I would never carry a gun that only has one mag, if you're someone who did/does, how would you go about it?

@@neurotoksyn I had at one point bought a Makarov pistol. Came with 2 mags but after a few outings with the gun one of the magazines completely broke, turns out it was damaged and I never noticed and recoil caused a crack in the magazine body that caused malfunctions.
I'd tested the pistol thoroughly enough to deem it reliable so while waiting for a spare mag to arrive I carried it for a while on just one magazine. Truthfully, I never felt bad about it. I've been involved in a few defensive shootings and my experience in those scenarios leans more towards what the statistical average on the matter shows. Most gun fights are over in 3-4 rounds and an 8 round magazine with one in the chamber is plenty to carry you through that. The one situation I had where it wasnt resolved in 3-4 or less was resolved in 8 but that WAS with a 15 round magazine.
Realistically, it's kind of once you're out you just hope that the 8-9 rounds you have are enough to end the situation. Be it you run, they run, they die, you die, etc... I wouldnt go into a situation where you'd be likely to need more than that and not have enough. But one never knows how many rounds they'll need until they know that they need it. In most situations, simply having a gun is already giving you an advantage. So for people who dont carry spares... I dont blame them. If you dont own any spares, I still wont blame you but I'd suggest if nothing else getting spares for range use but also that rare chance your magazine goes bad.

@@Predalien195 thank you for the reply, I'm the have it and not need it over need it and not have it type. So if for example some drug addict (which unfortunately are present in pockets in my community) refuses to go down or leave after the first mag (I carry a g43 with a +1 extension so 7+1), having the spare is added peace of mind. I've even considered swapping over to the sig 365 because round count is one of my primary concerns and 23 rounds (10+1 and a 12 or even 15 round backup) is a very compelling argument. I understand not everyone has the same mindset or opportunity for capacity so getting a little insight into a different circumstance is greatly appreciated.
The only thing we can be thankful for these "what if" brigades that they give ideas to great content from time to time

When I purchase a firearm I consider additional magazines as part of the cost.

I have one on layaway, and have been looking at buying the extra magazines now before I even have the gun.
IKR, even for my very first gun purchase I ordered a total of 5 magazines for it. But then again... we are fans Paul Harrell and logic.

I think this comparison is very useful for SHTF scenarios. In a completely unpredictable scenario like that where you're likely dealing with scarcity, it's very likely you won't have extra mags or auto-loaders. Obviously a true SHTF scenario is an extremely unlikely situation, but so is a civilian being in a normal self-defense fight where they would fire more than 2-3 rounds so we're already in the realm of unlikely scenarios with this discussion of putting rounds down range.

Hey Paul, I saw on mythbusters when they were shooting a gun in water, that the FASTER bullet was moving, the less it penetrated. It seemed that handguns actually travelled further than the rifles. It would be awesome to see you test that and see what you find, thanks for the vids!!

@@mark500mo Higher velocity = exponentially higher coefficient of drag. You experience less overall drag when moving slower, even when you account for the increased time period of exposure to drag.
This is why there's been a trend over the last few decades for container ships to move slower - for relatively small drops in speed, they can save enormous amounts of fuel, because they just get a lot less drag from water. This is also why pistol barrels can remain functional for 50 000 - 100 000 rounds, while heavy rifle barrels, for most calibres, don't function properly past 5000. The rifle barrels experience much higher drag coefficients that wears the rifling away much faster.
Finally, next time you're at pool, run your hand slowly through the water. It's pretty damn easy. Then move your hand through as fast as you can. The increase in resistance is much higher than the increase in speed, even if you don't really have a way of measuring it.
This principal is also at the core of the differences between fast, light projectiles, and heavy, slow projectiles. The reason that heavy projectiles are better at conserving their energy over distance is simply that they experience less drag than projectiles of the same energy, lower weight, and higher speed.
If you're trying to shoot far through water, the best option might be a 158 grain bullet from a .38 special load. I'm not aware of any other handgun loads that have a higher weight/speed ratio.

In a real life shootout how many people could really reload a revolver and keep shooting? Paul can do it faster than I ever could and it takes him awhile even when he’s not busy ducking. If I’m that nervous I’m bringing a semi auto that I know works. Best part of the vid was the end where he shot off maybe 15 in ten seconds.
I never bought a speed loader for one of my revolvers, granted that's because this revolver is a cap and ball black powder revolver.

Justin h , I’m an ordinary civilian. I will never drive a police car to a bank being robbed by 5 criminals. I will never jump on a tank and be driven to the front lines of a battle. My 5 shot revolver, with no reloads, is plenty of gun for me. I never, never, leave my house without my 38spl revolver.

I'd like to see this contest again, no mags, but this time between a Dirty Harry .45 magnum and a 1876 gatling gun.
David Burroughs Harry had a Smith and Wesson Model 29 in .44 magnum. It came to market in 1950. The M1865 Gatling was .50 caliber usually but used various calibers depending on the buyer.

@Hater Oftheleft "Loading 45-70 into the Gatlin gun was considered a slow process, due to the length of the cartridge, and the amount of ammo needed on the belt. The .44 magnum was told to be able to "blow a mans head clean off". This leaves the potential of no available head to continue to load the Gatlin gun belt"....
Uhhh, I believe the Gatling originally used a proprietary cartridge, not .45-70.

Speaking of mags, this is one reason I love Glock. New Gen4's + 5's come with 3 mags in the box and additional mags can easily be found & often sub $30.
4th reason not to carry speed loaders is printing. In the summer when I carry a snubnose revolver, I carry speed strips instead of speed loaders, because I don't want the speed loaders to print and give away that I'm carrying.
Remember most people do not even know what a speed loader is. As long as it doesn't print clearly in the shape of a gun, people will assume it is your phone, wallet, etc. (If they notice at all.) When I carried a revolver I carried speed strips just because they were far less bulky. Also it is highly unlikely most people will need to (or if you need to, get to) reload the revolver in any realistic self-defense scenario anyway.

Yeah that should not be a concern of yours. If you saw all the crap I carry in my pockets you would shit. Like seven people on earth could see a speed loader in your pocket and know what it was. I think an auto magazine is more identifiable, and I keep one in my back pocket all the time. Never had anyone know what it was. In fact, in my old job, one of the girls I worked with asked what it was. It became a year long guessing game with the women at work. They kept trying. They never guessed. It drove them crazy that I had something in my pocket every day that I wouldn’t tell them about. They would give up for a month or two then start up again.

That is one of many reasons that I love 9 mm, when I don't feel like carrying an extra magazine around it's not a big deal because I already have 18+1 rounds
I carry a Glock 43. i leave the house with 3 mags in total, but I usually leave the two spares in the glove box. I can go about my day more normally without two decent sized mag pouches on my hip. But they arent at home, they're just however far my truck is from me. Worst case, 6+1 in the flush fit, and I can run like the wind if my life depends on it. my goal is to get out.
I don't even carry a stick or a handful of pebbles, so a spare magazine or a speed loader would seem a bit over the top in my case 😁😁😁
Just a quick point about the partial reload. You could drop a single round in the auto, drop the slide and store it while you reload the mag... So if the threat manifests before you complete you have at least 1 shot.
Paul has an even better (for him, at least) solution. He literally counts the rounds as he fires them off and reloads with one still in the chamber. This gives him that single round capability without having to drop a round in as an extra step. Surprised he didn't mention it, now that you bring it up.
@@kleinbottled79his ability to do that with all pistols rifles shotguns that he shoots is incredible. That's one of the first things I learned from him a few years ago. Definitely a good thing to practice, hard to do
this is a stage in a few autoloader training scenarios/matches.

I would love to see a speed strip thrown into the mix, just for the fun of it.
It is more concealable than a speed loader, so it does have some value.
Obviously slower than a speed loader, but having additional rounds for a six shooter sounds like a good idea.
The good point about speed strips is that they facilitate a partial reload better than a speedloader can. All through my duty career when I carried a revolver I had speedloaders and at least one strip.
