I own a place way out in the middle of nowhere in Texas. I use that place for getting away from civilization, hunting, weapons training / practice. Walking around my place one evening, I see a man slinking through the brush. He does not see me. I took cover behind a tree. He is making his way towards my cabin. When he is in a small clearing, I said "HALT". He jumps, looks around, and can't figure where I am. I asked "Can I help you". A long pause, no answer. "You are trespassing." He lit out towards my front gate. I saw him hop the gate and head down the road. A bit later I heard a truck start and depart down the dirt road at a high speed. I had a single action Ruger 45LC on my hip. I now carry my AR-15 16" barrel rifle around when walking. What was he going to do? Rob the cabin? Probably. Things can get weird anywhere, anytime. Paul is right. Carry a handgun that can defend you.

The Glock model 29 chambered in 10mm is an excellent choice for a remote area because it's as light and compact as a standard 9mm carry sized gun but shoots a round powerful enough to stop a bear. You never know what you might run into out there whether it be a bad guy or a predator like a bear or a cougar. My favorite round for personal defense is Double Tap 135 gr. Hollow points. For predator protection 220 gr. Buffalo Bore hardcast lead will destroy pine 4x4 boards with ease.

    • @theeddorian
      @theeddorian 4 роки тому +106

@@scockery The woods can be pretty wild and wooly not that far from civilization, maybe an hour's drive. In the late '70s I worked for one of the National Forests in California. Energy costs had gone up thanks to PG&E antics and and unemployment was really high. There had been a boom in "poaching" firewood. Now, at least back then, it was no big deal to cut wood in the forest. You stopped at the District Ranger Station, explained your intentions, and bought a pretty inexpensive permit. Then, as long as you didn't start taking down anything bigger than six inches or so, you could cut a quite a lot. They are still pretty cheap compared to buying cord wood commercially. Things became surreal out there with cord wood "pirates" simply picking a spot with trees they liked and starting to cut. There several sections (the 640-acre kind) where black oaks were completely wiped out. As the preferred wood became scarcer, the wood cutters started going armed, and would shoot at each other, passing Forest Service vehicles. and just about any thing they thought might interfere with their freedom to take whatever they wanted. As things became clearer, most of these guys were not there for cord wood for their use. They were out to haul away as much as they could for a profit. We were stopped by a badged ranger and told to report any cutting we saw but not to interact in any way. The day before, to entrepreneurs had gotten into a shootout and one had been wounded. The other guy was still at large and apparently cutting wood. Later we had to watch out for booby traps and armed guards around pot plantations, and not being "badged" employees, mere "seasonals," we were not allowed to carry on the job. Probably anyone that has worked in the woods has stories.

Back when I was 18 I used to go to an observatory at night to look at the stars, nebulae, galaxies etc.
It was a ways out of town and up a winding mountain road.
One night i came upon a car stopped with the hazards on.
Being a pretty good mechanic, i had a habit of helping people with car trouble so I was already focused on that when I stopped and got out.
It was at that point I noticed some debris had clearly been drug into the road to block the on-comming lane with the "broke down car" blocking my lane.
It would be nearly impossible for me to turn around on that narrow mountain road.
A lady steps out of the drivers side of the car and I ask if she needs help.
Right then a man comes out of the treeline above the road to my left.
He looks at me, his expression changed from somewhat menacing to sorta neutral.
    "Naw man, we're okay."
He gets in the car and pulls it forward so I can drive around.
Now, they may have just been cutting brush, in the dark, using a small car.
Or they were setting a trap for someone and i wasn't on the menu.
But I never forgot the way he startled me and particularly the facial expression he had when i first saw him, before it changed.
There were no cell phones in those days and no pay phones on that long dark road either.
When i came back down the mountain later, they were gone, the brush was on the side of the road.
I got chills as I passed by.

@@coolguy2475 a lot of really good deer rounds need faster, 1/8 is a good twist, 1/9 if you're only using up to 69gr lead core ammo, you dont loose much practical accuracy going faster on the twist, but you do lose a lot of practical accuraccy by going too slow. Also 1/12 twist barrels aren't nearly as common as 1/8 and 1/7 barrels are, and usually are more expensive for either being a "clone" barrel, or a target barrel that takes advantage of the the slight increase in accuracy for varmint/bench shooting where you're only using light bullets and are trying to squeeze the maximal amount of accuracy form then.

Lesson I learned long ago hunting deer on state land. Yeah I might be deer hunting with a shotgun and with the loads used have been known to be top notch fir defense. But when somebody is messing with you their eyes are glued to that long gun, they don't notice the 4" 357 coming out of the jacket pocket and going to a low ready. Me being right handed and preffering it to shoot I screw with alot of people that may not know me well enough, they think I'm left handed until I shoot because I've taught myself through instinct to always carry my long gun by the receiver in my left hand incase I need to get to my pistol. Never liked slinging a rifle or shotgun, seems like every time you see something worth shooting the guns in an impossible place to get to it without being noticed.

When I heard a car door slam up the hill a little ways. Two men came toward my camp yelling that I was trespassing , at least one of them was carrying what looked like a shotgun. Well as the men approach to about 30 yards and within eye sight I yelled back to hold it right the he’ll their and put my hand on my dads 38 police special . I told them this was national forest land and to stop right there and by the way my grandpas 30-30 was in arms reach. The two men stopped and said they were just kidding and turned and got out of there. Always go armed.

    Paul, please consider this.
I would also like a video directed towards the daughters many of us have. I’ve already lost one daughter and don’t want anymore, and I don’t want anyone else to go through this. I believe Paul can make a great informational video for self protection and awareness. Many young ladies are oblivious to their surroundings and naive about the crazies in the world. These anecdotes can be pure gold. Please think about it and maybe bring in a lady to demonstrate how to be aware and prepared. Not all women are attacked with guns, my oldest daughter was stabbed while at work during a robbery at noon. I don’t think she was aware that a 21yo would be hiding a knife in his sleeve. Some people would say I should’ve bought her a gun,..I did and she wanted nothing to do with it and would never have carried it. The younger generation are brainwashed at school to think guns are only for murderers rather than tools of protection. Besides, a gun would not have helped her in that situation unless she was very observant of her surroundings. You can’t see danger coming if you are not watching for it. So... dads like me,.. . really want a good, (non-political) video that all of our daughters can watch (often forced to watch) for their own well being. My middle daughter loves the outdoors and camping and doesn’t think that she needs to carry her gun because the rabbits won’t attack her, not thinking about your store of the man ‘up to no good’ possibly on the same hiking trail that day. P.S. to get political for a moment.. she as stabbed by a 21yo whom as just released from jail on a PR bond, meaning no money bond, after the second or third time he stole a car, and had couple of drug/alcohol dui records and previously a Sex offender , yet released because of a democratic governor’s new law and now will also not be subject to death penalty also because of democrat governor. Our governor also decriminalized small amounts of meth, heroine, and some others. I think a lot more crazies are on the way. And to all the fathers out there, please take care of your daughters and teach the to protect themselves. Thank you.

So about eight years ago, myself, my two brothers and father drew out for archery deer. In the state that we live in, if you have a concealed weapons permit, you can carry a handgun while archery hunting, and since none of us had one, we only had bows. So we had a fairly successful hunt, but there was a moment when we were hunting a spot that we perceived as pretty far from anything, and we were for the most part alone in the woods. Well, when we came out of the area and moved on, my older brother who was 17 at the time, told my father that he'd seen people moving around, not wearing camo, not carrying bows, etc. it wasn't maybe a week later, that we were at the local gun shop and there was a big hubbub, turns out that the area that we were hunting was a "farm" where some less than reputable people were growing some less than legal substances, and they shot and killed someone who was hunting in the area. Anymore, I don't walk away from the truck without at least a reload for my rifle and one for my handgun.

I, too, like rifle/pistol combos. .22 short Remington gallery gun with Astra Cub in .22 Short; Ruger MkIs and IIs to go with the 10-22s; High Standard Sentinel revolver with Marlin 60; .327 Federal Single Sevens and a Marlin 1894CB in .327 (thank you Ranger Point Precision); Ruger Blackhawk and Rossi 92 in .357; Super Blackhawk and assorted other .44s and Rossi 92 in .44; 1911 pistol and M1 Garand; 1917 S&W and Springfield rifle; Walther P38 and K98 Mauser; Browning Hi-Power and Enfield #1 MkIII. A Uberti Stallion Target in .22 with a pre-Henry Iver Johnson lever action. This one has the magnum cylinder, so we are currently searching for a .22 magnum rifle, of the lever action variety, probably a Henry as Marlin and Winchesters are priced out of range. Be careful. A guy could get carried away with this whole concept...

I had the same experience horse back on a back road, a fellow in a van was hostile drunk and I must have taken his manhood away on my horse, he rode slowly beside me doing everything he could to provoke a fight, I pick an open spot in the woods and simply rode away from him. Sitting in my jacket pocket was a Copy lawman MK III Sub nose. He never saw it, but it was there.

I have always wanted Savage to bring back the model 24 Camper 22lr over 20 gauge. None of the current Savage or Chiappa combo guns satisfy me that well. That would be a brilliant "if it makes gravy shoot it" gun.

I have four rifle/handgun combos now. #1 Ruger 10/22 and Ruger Mk IV both in 22 LR, #2 Marlin 1894 and S&W Model 60 both in 357 Magnum, #3 Ruger 44 Carbine and Ruger Super Blackhawk both in 44 Magnum and #4 Big Horn Armory Model 89 and S&W Model 500 both in 500 S&W Magnum. Good for anything except long range in my combos.

Paul I was up on 5427 at a pond with family. I was in water getting gold fish... I left my pistol in the truck. We had a guy drive up to my wife and kids. He approach my wife and kids. He didn’t see me and I was with out my pistol in the truck.... I was able to talk with him which he didn’t see me and drive off. When he drove up to my wife he ask my wife if she was alone how long she been here etc... very spooky way looking around etc.. I never again won’t have my pistol on my person. Great thing is my wife starting practicing with her pistol again that day!!!

@@GunFunZS The same rifle is used today only with more rails and furniture. Some would say that 1911s were too old in Vietnam but they are still in use today. 60 years later. If anything the m4 pattern carbine is an inferior rifle in many ways to the 20 inch A2 and A1 patterns.

9:45 I've ran into a similar situation hiking in the woods by myself unarmed! It's a very scary situation and I could have gotten murdered! Most people you meet on trails are generally nice and decent people, but you got a few trouble makers that think they own the public land and are looking for nothing but trouble... This is why I'm getting my CCW permit.

One day, it was too muddy to hike, so I was walking home, and some small, yappy dog runs up to me aggressively barking while the owner watched... Eventho I used animal psychology to make it back down, I still had my hand on my gun the entire time. Looking back tho... i guess i should have just shot it & put it on my application to the ATF ?
