    That was a beautiful tribute. My mother's funeral is tomorrow and she asked me to sing at it a week before she passed. I told her I wouldn't be physically able to do it and would be horrible for everyone but will record something instead. I ended up doing Amazing Grace for her. This is great advice if I ever get asked again in the future. Thank you. R.I.P Dennis & Mum

      My mother asked the same thing of me - that's really hard. But I think you'll find that since your mother has past - nothing else will ever reach that level of the floor dropping out from under you. Grief is the price of love. I'm so sorry for your loss. You're officially all grown up now. L.I.P. (live in peace)

    Just watching that made me cry! My secret weapon is pain. I will do something to cause myself pain when I feel myself start to cry - like make a fist and dig my nails into my palm or pinch myself. I’m not talking drawing blood, just something to redirect my emotional state briefly in order to get over that hurdle and back into being composed again. It really works! Especially when singing a song that is very slow and doesn’t have room for rhythm. Great advice as always though!

    Your singing is so free, in control and to detail in style Mark. This is so encouraging to see your example your age. I am 37 and still am a beginner. But over these 3 years. I have been exploring vowel and closure. My exploration had to be in detail to ever find most accuracy, without which I would never mind more ease in higher range. This year...my life happened so that I didn't succeed to keep up the practice. I am looking forwards to continue it and enjoy the journey. Carl John Franz took about 10 years to learn to sing. I hope I will also learn in a few...

    Wow, this came out great, Mark. In fact, I'd say this is one of the best performances I've heard you do. I'm so sorry that circumstances prevented you from physically getting to the memorial...and I'd like to think you would have performed just as well in person...but, perhaps in some way this way was better. The universe can be, well, weird, in ways we don't understand. But thank you so much for this topic anyway, because I am struggling with "You'll Never Walk Alone" for a friend learning to walk again. Damn hard to balance the emotion and the performance, especially playing guitar at the same time...I'll try some of your tricks. RIP to Dennis and best wishes to you Mark and your wife. A pat on the back to you for making lemonade out of lemons!

    I was asked by my father in-law to sing at his funeral which sadly only happened only a couple of months ago. I recorded a version in case I couldn't muster up the courage to do it on the day. Thanks for this, especially at such a vulnerable time. One of my biggest obstacles is keeping emotions in check when I sing (been trying to sing Mama for my mother for over a decade but keep choking up at "I know you had dreams" and "I hope you're happy with my life") I'll try snapping my fingers. Condolences for your loss, sorry you didn't get to be there.

      Thank you. The thing to remember is some moments are already emotionally loaded - so it's OK to pull back and focus on rhythm. It's doesn't mean you're not heartfelt - it means you want to be able to finish the song!

    I can relate! I sometimes choke up while rehearsing something sweet and sentimental. Very worrisome, how am I gonna get through performing this song in public without dissolving into a puddle of tears? What gets me through is remembering that some folks in the audience really need to hear this song and be touched by it. So like you said, I sing *for* that audience, not *to* them. Singing for your brother at his funeral, that’s a challenge on a higher level. Whew! I hope it brought some peace for you. Thanks for sharing!

I think God let me here. two and a half years ago I lost my father due to cancer unexpectedly and I also sang at his funeral, I was overwelmed with all the emotions, grief, nerves (because I get nervous when I have to sing in front of a lot of people) But I did it! I'm having trouble in my choir -- there's one a cappella choral song -- "Sing Me to Heaven" / Daniel Gawthrop -- that I sang for the first time right after the funeral of a friend. Since then, I can't shake the association, and tear-up pretty quickly. I'll try concentrating on rhythm (that's easy) and intent (not so easy). Thank you for the lesson. -- Charles

    My sister and I joined my mom's band and we played So Cal. and Vegas for many years. We did (and do) everything from The Andrew Sisters to Zeppelin and Bowie(my hero) To Patsy Cline Sons of the Pioneers. 3 part harmony with the family blend. We have done many funerals and there one song we ALWAYS do called 'true love' the Everly Brothers covered it. I always feel like it is a duty a calling to sing for them. Like a charge from God. A job. When I'd feel choked up I would lose my close up focus and go long in my head. I'd see beyond the room. So Mark I sang professionally for 30 years straight. Not until I watched your warm up videos did I know how to sing. I am so happy. I AM who I always was but I couldn't access it. I love you for that. I had be warming up with another "let's start wis-za hum" video. It made it little easier to sing- but I found myself in your teaching. I just like everything you do. I could start listing but it is just everything. Thank you. Laura Paxton if I could have only found you 350 years sooner lol

    Wow! I am a professional funeral singer. I sing in about 20 funeral services a month. I’ve also recently sang at my grandmother’s and Father’s funeral even while my dad was saying his final goodbyes and by the grace of God I have learned to do it. The Rythm is a great idea but also singing that song prior letting all the emotions come out. Once I do I service I focus on the execution, by then my voice has already grasped the emotion from my practice so when I sing it I’m only repeating what I did. It’s like the recording you sent. the difference it’s you just become the living recording. I hope this makes sense.

    • @voicelessondotcom
      @voicelessondotcom  2 роки тому +1

      Yes - you're right - rehearsals allow us to compartmentalize from the emotion. If I was able to sing at the actual service I either would have been fine by altering my focus or sung through tears - no second takes in live singing!
