Dirt games are surprisingly easy on a keyboard, maybe with the exception of rwd cars. I was usually around top30 on dailies on a wheel in dr1, and when i tried hill climb event on keyboard one day, I finished 9th overall
@@Andruspl that's interesting. I suppose the game must do a bit of input smoothing of the keyboard inputs, and/or the fact that on a rally course you often are operating past the limit of the tyres on corners with 4wd might mean delicate inputs aren't as important - unless your hill climb was the tarmac version, in which case maybe the keyboard forced you to drive in a more boring but faster style?
"The mere idea of matching them in a single segment became an insurmountable challenge. Even along Seemingly Simple Straight Sections they'd Soundly Secure Superior Scores, Surpassing my Subpar Struggles as I Soon Succumbed to Settling for Second place."

I'm a filmmaker. I often have anxious thoughts about if what I'm doing matters. Videos like these give me solace in those worries, as when Philip said "This game bettered me as a person" I was reminded how media can make us reflect and feel emotions we didn't before. That is what matters when making a game or any other creation. Even if that feeling is just fun, or it it reminds us to have perspective like Dirt did here. Thanks for this video.
Man, these types of videos are why I like Philip so much more than most other youtubers. He doesn't just talk about video games in a general sense, but he'll have these occasional videos that are so insightfu andl humbling. I like how here he's saying its not about trying to the best, but the best you can be. I really love that quote at 7:58 with "And my ego melted away as my respect for this game grew." There's just something inspiring about this, especially with the up beat dirt rally soundtrack playing in the background. I also liked that Asda video where he mentioned how enjoyable it was to just listen to music while walking to Asda and how certain tracks would mark certain parts of his journey. I tend to listen to music while drawing or working so I tend to associate whatever songs I was listening to at the time with some of my finished works. I really enjoyed the game making journy series too, especially as someone who is studying a game design course.
Good to see another life-lessons-with-phil-but-its-a-video-game on the dirt rally series :D And yes I did watch the entire video already I was part of the 1 minute club :))))))
this is one of your greatest videos of all time. listening to your experience being humbled and to not give up was really inspiring. I really love the videos like these where you just talk about your experiences. this is a great video!
First thing I do after a Online Rally stage with hundreds or thousands of players is look how far up the Scroll bar is on the right lol. But for real, this game can be so frustrating. One little mistake and you end a monthly 200 places further back. But there are these moments, when you drive a stage, hit every corner as good as you can, 6 or 7 minutes of driving, and you finish alot quicker then you have before. It feeld amazing, like you have achieved something impossible, that you have showen all your skill. A feeling that cannot be recreated by anything else.
That's how racing works. Sometimes in order to be going faster you have to slow down. Driving within your skill level and slowing down is always going to be faster than crashing... Then as you improve, you gradually push it, a little faster, a little faster.
After watching this video, there are many things I want to say but, all I want to say is, Thanks for making this video, I left this video a lot more happier and motivated in life
I don’t know if this reaches you but this is the motivation video I come to time and time again. I’ve been struggling with addiction for years and now I am clean but motivation was something i have been lacking but this gives me such helpful advice. I picked up irl karting and sim racing as a coping mechanism and your mindset towards this is game is my mantra towards real life karting and sim racing ‘’just keep going no matter what’’ (finished p4 in my first karting race because of this approach). And in real life I also found solice in what you said at 12:06 and i keep with me everyday, I may not be the best but I am consistent and I just keep better everyday.
I rarely intentionally look up youtube videos to rewatch them, but today I did it with this video. This might be my favorite out of all the videos you've uploaded.
"I've learned how to get out of a skid in a RWD car, it might even save my life one day" Yeah, I guess it could if you drive your car with a keyboard. In third person.
I was always good at drifting with a controller, but when I got a wheel it still took me 80+ hours of practice before I could hold a drift in Assetto Corsa. Skills with a wheel totally did save me when my car went sideways at 70mph IRL.
Hey , I was just looking for some cornering tutorials and ended up with this AMAZING VIDEO. Man, that is some formidable storytelling !! And the way you’re telling it is very immersive! I just couldn’t stop watching it and listenening to this amazing story of yours - and you know what, I think I’m gonna really take it slow with group B cars in Spain 😅 Thank you again for such an amazing story!
I really enjoyed this, it felt like all the dirt ralley stuff up until this point were small teasers for this video. I can really tell this game has meant a lot to you, and can really see why as well Ever since being a child, you always have that fantasy of spending weeks and months dedicated to mastering a game, and this one would perfectly scratch that itch (if I was any good at driving games haha) 6:20 stuff like this shows sincerely how much you sink into writing these videos. I can picture it perfectly, you see a small pattern of s words and just run with it. Stuff like this puts a smile on my face, because it demonstrates you still really enjoy making these sorts of videos Nice one mate
Your first video on Dirt Rally always stuck in my head for some reason. And I recent;y have started playing it, and thanks to the mindset your video had given me, I've been having tons of fun with it. I'm super glad to have a video on 2.0 by you, as I loved your first vid. Thanks for making such good content!
Hey mate, I really appreciate the advice! After the first stage I was ranked around 1200 (typical for me) so I decided to just try driving more patiently. It was kind of awkward at first fighting the urge to just lead foot it, but I watched my rank slowly rise to my new best of 520! You also gave me a whole new appreciation for the game and my personal adventure through it!
10:57 "It might even save my life one day." This x100. Most of my racing used to be done on a controller but the understanding of the techniques helped me stay on the road during my first winter of driving when my Front wheel SUV started sliding towards the ditch in 2 different corners on my way to work.
I can feel your passion as you talk, you make me wanna play this game simply because you love it so much! great video as always, keep it up, you're amazing
Great video. Slow is fast, and the most enjoyable part of it is getting over that hump when you've really discovered the feeling of the car you're in and send it over the line just a couple seconds above the AI that you've decided is your enemy. The Dailies and Monthlies are absolutely critical to knowing that you're definitely not the best, but taking that as a challenge to get BETTER and keep going is a priceless feeling.
I just realized I play this game like an insane person. Slap on some eurobeat, tell the co-driver to shut up and only tell me left/right/or hairpins, and just wing it, with no worries whatsoever. This is also very inspiring and oddly emotional.
Watching early in the video: "Wow, this guy isn't very good." 10:12 O N A K E Y B O A R D Me, sitting behind the wheel of my Logitech G29: "Uhhh, sorry I take that back. I'm actually pretty impressed now."
It makes it very confusing why you'd play something trying to be a sim with a KB in third person view. It's basically the same as playing CSGO with a controller.
@@CIARUNSITE trust me, it is not even close to your comparison. Some people underestimate keyboard in racing games, because they always used gamepad. i play racing games since i was 3 or 4 years old, always on keyboard, because i didn't have any other choice. To this day, i play on KB and my driving style adapted so much that when im trying a controller, i simply cannot drive. im playing dirt rally 1 now and im easily in top timings. having a mechanical kb helps aswell. Im not the best, but definitely better than most controller players. You cant use controller in CSGO that good, not even close in my opinion
it is almost impossible for me to play with keyboard. I use XboxControler which it shifts the gear one by one. First Person is a must, a different game.
@@nokocu You're a moron. Key switches can either be on or off, this is terrible for any driving game. You will lock up under any significant braking because you will always be at 100% pressure when braking. Of course you can start to just tap the brake repeatedly further into the braking zone, but this is silly and slow. You will also have poor exits out of corners as you'll have to either wait until you're out of the corner to accelerate (even then you'd encounter wheel spin), or repeatedly tap the key to avoid wheelspin. Steering input on a keyboard is also fucking stupid. Overall a keyboard will never be able to provide you with the smoothness required to be quick. It is absurd to play a sim on anything other than a wheel (unless you're running unauthentic assists, which is also silly).
@Aluthos I am aware of this... Most people don't have an analogue keyboard though. I think it's absurd to play sims on a controller as well, an analogue keyboard is no different.
I was feeling really down because I've been trying really hard to improve at living my life, and after I push myself intensely I get hit by a wave of demotivation, followed by depression from not being able to get things done. This video made me realize that I need to stop pushing myself to a point where I crash, I need to take the turns slow and brake early. Thanks a lot for your video.
I dunno, man, being required to be always online to play this game kind of sucks. At least Gran Turismo Sports has a good reason for it and is on top of that only multiplayer. But Dirt Rally 2 is kind of a bummer, getting kicked out of offline races because your internet connection broke down.
They did it because there was such a problem with cheating and exploiting the game's systems to get impossible times in Dirt Rally 1. It was easy to just restart the game in the middle of an online rally and give it another go, and I regularly saw people get times of 0:00 or similar. IMO it's an acceptable tradeoff (but they should let you play free play (non-progression SP) and not erase your online progress, that stuff is kinda BS)
Plus, on top of a Deluxe version that has season pass 1+2, they push a Super Deluxe version with pass 3+4 (1+2 not included). Seriously? This kind of bullshit makes me want to refund and buy WRC 8, but it's too late for that now.
While watching the video I was slowly getting hyped up for the game until he said it's online only and my hype dialed down to zero. I'm not buying a game that will become unplayable when the devs feel it's not making them enough money anymore and pull the plug on the servers. Feels like playing the game with a gun to your head.
This game is pretty great. Catty is insanely fast. Me and a couple of my friends are top 50 in single stage times but still 7+ seconds slower. I have no idea where they can find so much time in the stages. (8bitMonkey on racenet)
They cut alot of corners, some cuts in Germany or Wales are ridiculous. I tried it myself, there is no penalty, and you gain up to two seconds on one corner.
I've been playing Dirt games for years now but I simply do not get how you manage to do so well with just a keyboard in Dirt Rally and Dirt Rally 2.0. I'm stunned pleasently and it gave me hope that one day I could be that good aswell
10:09 _"...on a keyboard..." Pretty hilarious how you earlier thought the top players must be cheating. How did you not know... _"What do you mean a race wheel!? Grats on beating Dirt Rally 2, I never could beat the Rally games, too hard for me. I did beat the mainline Dirt games though, that's enough challenge for me.
I miss dirt 3 rally mode where you could haul ass so hard you could catch up to the other drivers and you could pass them cleanly or destroy their hopes in the rally career by destroying them
Many times I love to drift at insane speed, to the maximum possible, maybe after 10 attempts, one of those times I do a perfect drift without crashing or ending up being damaged, but it is so satisfying that time, it is worth it above the another 10 failed.
I love the liveliness in Dirt rally, the crowd reacts when they see the car, the player caresses the steering wheel with his fingers, the attendants react to stop the car, and some of my favorite vehicles break down and stop on the side of the road, which is very car, and some of my favorite vehicles break down and stand on the side of the road, which is a very nice detail
Alright the start of this video was odd "Woah did they add new announcers in DiRT Rally 2?" "Hang on..." "No, that's the samir you're breaking the car thing" It legitimately sounds like something that would be in this game, though.
I’ve been doing vr rally 2 lately and it is hard to describe with words. Breathtaking. I’m learning my own racing zen and appreciating how far I’ve come since playing arcade racers on a gamepad, to simcades on a gamepad, to simcades on a wheel, to sims on a wheel, to sims on a wheel in vr.
try it with a steeringwheel, hoodcam und manual gearbox someday, it really intensifies your experience. it's tons of fun optimizing your driving and master every stage. deep respect for conquering it with a keyboard tho :D
Dirt Rally is almost impossible with Keyboard. After like 30 hours, I am still stuck at the 2nd championship. Dirt Rally 2.0 is suprisingly doable after 2 hours, and Dirt 4 is also really easy, but after playing DR for so long I can't cope with it.

hahaha mate! I have been seeing your name pop up in the leaderboards of dailies from time to time :D I'm ERT_Jarod (I'm seen a few times in this video, in 1st place @7:35 :D ) I've tried to add you a couple times b4 to chat to ya about dirt and maybe help you out a bit as I've always been a fan of your vids for years now haha. Ofc you rejected me (no hard feelings) but man did I have a good laugh seeing you top 100 on occasion knowing full well you're 3rd person keyboard ;) But yeah man the competition and skill of some of the drivers in this game is incredible, I myself am a pro driver in this game currently working to qualify for the world champs and participating in pro level leagues against the best of the best and it takes a lot of time and effort to compete with these top level guys, its actually quite crazy how stressful and hardcore it is at times :) But anyway, congrats on beating the master ai dude, not even I have done that yet (mainly coz I dont play career ;) ) and I hope to still see your name pop up time to time :p ua-cam.com/video/c60847k7lqY/v-deo.html here is a run of mine on that exact Argentina stage that I won on that daily event :D You will see what the driving looks like from my perspective ;)

Dirt games are surprisingly easy on a keyboard, maybe with the exception of rwd cars. I was usually around top30 on dailies on a wheel in dr1, and when i tried hill climb event on keyboard one day, I finished 9th overall

check on my channel how you can rip this game with keyboard
@@Andruspl that's interesting. I suppose the game must do a bit of input smoothing of the keyboard inputs, and/or the fact that on a rally course you often are operating past the limit of the tyres on corners with 4wd might mean delicate inputs aren't as important - unless your hill climb was the tarmac version, in which case maybe the keyboard forced you to drive in a more boring but faster style?

I like that video and your message. And the best thing is: You can replace the word Dirt 2 everytime with something else like learning a language, assessing software development, going to the gym, spending time with your loved ones. Your message is always true ;-)
I was thinking the same thing from the perspective of a string player
I'm a filmmaker. I often have anxious thoughts about if what I'm doing matters. Videos like these give me solace in those worries, as when Philip said "This game bettered me as a person" I was reminded how media can make us reflect and feel emotions we didn't before. That is what matters when making a game or any other creation. Even if that feeling is just fun, or it it reminds us to have perspective like Dirt did here. Thanks for this video.

This video is incredible, a whole arc with real character development and a good story. Bravo
Good to see another life-lessons-with-phil-but-its-a-video-game on the dirt rally series :D
And yes I did watch the entire video already I was part of the 1 minute club :))))))

this is one of your greatest videos of all time. listening to your experience being humbled and to not give up was really inspiring.
After watching this video, there are many things I want to say but, all I want to say is,
Thanks for making this video, I left this video a lot more happier and motivated in life
This was unexpectedly wholesome, i kind of felt it was life advice.
You are breaking the car Philip please you have to listen to me!

I love this Video XD
This might be my favorite out of all the videos you've uploaded.
when he said about getting top 50 was like "not bad pretty decent" then at the end when he said he was on keyboard i was like "this guy is a god"

A heart?!? Dude I had no idea you'd actually see this, I'm glad you can see at least a little bit of the positive impact you have on us fans!
This is the most wholesome gaming video I've seen in a long, long time. Well done.
Lurk even if you aren’t into cars, it a really fun addictive game
Yeah I love it, the challenges keeps you coming back....like the dark souls of racing games.
Its free at the moment on ps4, just saying.
I'm convinced 2kliksphilip could make me to even join a mass murder cult.
Indeed you have learned the most important skill of a rally driver: Focus on finishing the stage by driving just below your limit.
This is such a wonderful story arc. I eagerly await to see how much more you’ve grown by your next Dirt Rally video
So basically you play dr2.0 like a Finnish teenager joyride, i approve.
"I didn't need to be the best, I just need to be the best I could be. I took pride in my own journey..." This became a life lesson for me... Wow
I treat the game the same way, some people are just crazy fast lol

This is my inspiration for my journey with Trackmania Daily, and racing games overall.
Unemployment: a video diary
I dunno, man, being required to be always online to play this game kind of sucks.
At least Gran Turismo Sports has a good reason for it and is on top of that only multiplayer.
But Dirt Rally 2 is kind of a bummer, getting kicked out of offline races because your internet connection broke down.
yeah its good that you dont need to be connected to WiFi on ps4 with GTS.
Requiring an internet connection for singleplayer should be unacceptable, not annoying.
I really applaud your effort to try and get back on the track at 1:45 but that was a hilarious failure. 😂

This game is pretty great. Catty is insanely fast. Me and a couple of my friends are top 50 in single stage times but still 7+ seconds slower. I have no idea where they can find so much time in the stages.
(8bitMonkey on racenet)
I'm gunna have to start doing more daily's and seeing how shitty i am at this game lol
They cut alot of corners, some cuts in Germany or Wales are ridiculous. I tried it myself, there is no penalty, and you gain up to two seconds on one corner.
I love when a videogame makes you a better person. So many great games, hobbies, and competitions out there can really improve one's life.

Many times I love to drift at insane speed, to the maximum possible, maybe after 10 attempts, one of those times I do a perfect drift without crashing or ending up being damaged, but it is so satisfying that time, it is worth it above the another 10 failed.

I felt that RWD handling in my bones.
Nobody else can turn racing games into life lessons quite as well as Philip.
