Fun fact: the great Walter Röhrl had a quasi photographic memory of the tracks/stages and could drive them without any guiding from his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer after driving them once or twice. In interviews, Röhrl often joked he mostly needed Geistdörfer for balancing the car and booking their hotel rooms.
Hahahahaha Brilliant 👏, this is what these games are missing, a good co-driver is as important as the driver, many actually improve the driver and adapt to them.
My favourite pacenote yet is from a UA-cam video of the Carrick Forestry Rally: "Double caution right two into double caution left two - they might have hay bales or something, they said at the meeting."
@@QemeH Curious, I presume they were referring to the chicanes made with hay bales on that track? Though normally they would just say something like "Chicane entry left" for those, so I figure there was something extra interesting going on with that one.
As the man who made the stages and wrote the pacenotes for the WRC Games since WRC 9, I am so happy to see this part of my work put in evidence somehow ! The most difficult part of making pacenotes for video games is the timing. Because unlike real life, the AI telling notes will have trouble to adapt on what's happening in-game. I obviously take most of the time adjusting the timing for pacenotes for it to appear/disappear, as I get some external help from real rallye driver for the writing. I can't count the number of times people asks me how this works thinking numbers are the gears so thanks for getting this part of rallying under the spotlight !
I can image that's very tricky to get right, and It's probably why I often recommend that players set their calls to arrive a little earlier. It's less risky hearing a note too early than too late. Thanks very much for the comment and for all of your work, the notes are fantastic so you have done a brilliant job! I'd love to know your process for refining these 😄
@@TraxionGG The difficulty is to set the "medium" value so everyone can change its settings. Thank you ! I can't talk too much about the creation process because it must stay confidential, but I can still talk a bit about it without going into big details (like I did with the pacenotes)

My dad used to rally, but retired because of a broken femur (hit a tree while doing 100 or so in his mazda 323 after an unwritten crest). He told me that here in centeral Europe codrivers usually use numbers 1-10 for the turns. I prefer words, like fast, medium, sharp and so on. Great video!
Thanks so much for this video! I'm 64. My son introduced me to Dirty Rally a few years ago. When he moved out last year, he gifted me with a PS4 and a full VR rig including wheel, shifter, and peddles. I love playing Dirt Rally! Besides being just good, clean, non-violent gaming fun, it's a good stress reliever. Being I have a minor handicap of audio-video sensory processing delay, I have relied on the visual aids in the game more than the audio because I do not quite understand the audio. This helps a great deal with both the video displays and audio input!! Looking forward to improving my rank! I'll get a chance to play again with my son later this month. Hopefully I'll be able to surprise him with some improvements. Thanks again!
"Stress reliever" yeah right, just wait until you're 9 minutes in a 15km long stage, a few corners before the finish line, and you accidentally hit a bump at the edge of a corner, the car goes flying and you get terminal damage, having to redo the stage all over again, then maybe you'll change your mind if rallying games really are "stress relievers" XD
I know this comment is old but I wholeheartedly disagree, although I see what you’re saying. The onscreen notes provide a visual example to what the words actually mean. Players begin to recognize what 5 right actually looks like with a visual example

I picked up on quite a few of these when an old roommate and I would do time attack against each other on Colin McRae Rally 3. Thank you for the breakdown, it helps round out some of the words I never quite picked up in real time with only audio.

Helpful tips when taking Jumps. ALWAYS remember, Once your tires are not on the Ground, DO NOT Turn. Why? I don't know how much this works for cars, but with off road racing trucks or buggies, breaking in the air causes the truck to take a more nose down attitude and accelerating lifts the nose. The flatter your vehicle lands the less damage to vehicle and crew. Landing on your front wheels bends the chassis, tears the suspension loose or bursts tires. Its hard to drive hard with your co-drive mostly screams over bumps and jumps and worse when its the driver.

Dude thank you so much! I am a Brazilian and is specially hard to understand some parts when playing dirt 3, now with your guide, I can fully understand what the co driver is saying, tysm!
Just wanted to say that not every rally game uses this system. Richard Burns Rally uses the Easy/Medium/Hard/Kay system, while Rallisport Challenge used a 1-9 system, with 1 being the easiest and 9 being the hardest corner.
I passed my driving test 2 weeks ago. I got an instruction to take the 4th exit on a roundabout. ''4 Right over crest'' I repeated back. Instructors eyes lit up because he's also a Rally fan :D
As someone who used to find the co-driver annoying as can be, i now find myself having wanted to learn what the callouts mean. Thank you for explaining everything i understood it all and now i can race better and hopefully be more prepared
I’ve been doing well racing online by trial and error. Finally decided to actually learn.. thanks for being informative and clear, i really appreciate finding the exact video I was looking for ❤
thank you to bring me the first stage in every event ..... from drift and rice sim games to rally you make me understand how to mix it both and get the best result of rally ....i never thought i can drive that fast and drift that smooth knowing what i'm gonna face next over and over ,,, after few days of practicing i learned how to drive the co-diver sights on my gearbox and engine sound then i start to understand how to tune my car for different stages ..thank you so much ..
I turn these to simple whenever possible so they sound more like the old Sega Rally (Easy Left, Medium Right, etc) If I can't do that I always turn it off... if I can't do THAT... well now I know how to at least get information from their constant chatter, so I appreciate the video!
It's crazy how important it is to use your own language for pacenotes. I really like rallying in Assetto Corsa, but there are only english pacenotes avaible. Even though I can understand english absolutely fine and the range of words used are very limited, I still need that extra little bit longer to process.
Dear Colin McRae of the Rally sim, thank you for bestowing this knowledge upon a wonder-lust driven novice rally enthusiast. I shall use it wisely and inform Sammir to LISTEN TO THE CALLS!
Started playing dirt 2.0 when in hs on controller and absolutely loved it and got a cheap sim rig that still feels good and after all these years and many thoroughly enjoyed hours, I can pretty masterfully get through any of the stages in just about any car really really fast now, that’s prolly not worth anything to anyone bc the times aren’t really close to world records but my god my head feels so massive after I put down a nice time in a rwd. learning how to “rally” has given me so so so much fun, what an amazing sport.
Haven’t really played rally games before, but liking this video for “the numbers, mason.” (That and how cleanly composed this video is; wonderfully informative and detailed.)
This is a very helpful video, as I've been sucked into dirt 2.0 and ended up muting the guy after my first race because I didn't understand what he was saying and just thought it was distracting lol. after watching this, I think I'll let the guy speak again.
2:19 I’m happy you said that because I used to play WRC on PS4 all the time and used to just try to keep the number in mind with what gear I was meant to be in as a fast way to get comfortable with the pace notes. Glad to know I wasn’t crazy or cheapening the system too much.
Great job on this vid mate. I've been rally gaming for decades and have gotten by on the information I was given, with good results, but some of it was instinctive reaction to situations because I didnt REALLY understand what my co was telling me. This has clarified a few for me. Thumbs up!!!
It's a great guide, well done. One minor point though. You did mention that, for example, medium corners usually mean third or fourth gear, which is fair enough. BUT it's important people realise that associating the number of a corner to a certain gear (3 left = third gear), is something people should avoid at all times. Especially if you want to improve your times because in quite a few cases you will be either too slow, which means you lose time, or too fast causing an accident. The numbers for corners in the most common pacenote systems refer to the angle of the corner and not the gear you should be in. It's a very common mistake players make and takes a while to unlearn.
@@shadeburst True. The main reason is probably because it would get too complicated for the casual players. The only game I've seen it used recently, is Assetto Corsa. Having said that, it's a co-driver tool developed by a modder. I created my own voice pack for it, which people can download. Has been part of all my AC rally videos I've released, in case you are interested.
You're right. Using the gear was a neat trick when i started rallying but it's really hard to lose that habit even after hundreds of hours, especially when you drive a wide range of cars with different settings on different surfaces.
I have been playing Dirt Rally for more than 100 hours and always ignored the Co driver. Then when I play the 2.0 and actually listen to the co-driver, my experenice and composure is much better. this leads more better timing and more fun. I used be to very cautious when my gear was 4 or more because I didn't know what to do when a square or haripins are ahead. Now, I can go on 5 gear on full thorttle with no worries. and my tip, Dont cut
Yeah it sucks because i like to play while listening to music but obviously that hinders your ability to concentrate/listen to your notes. I might try to see if i can get used to it
Quite interesting that the only reason I could never understand the instructions were because of the big numbers they say - I just couldn't fathom what it means "5 right 100". The 100 just somehow converted into km/h in my head which of course is nonsense lol. Thanks for this video, now I understand the instructions fully!
Thanks for this video! I’ve really gotten into WRC this year; I bought WRC+ (since streaming and TV options are nonexistent here in the U.S.) and WRC 10 on my Series X. This is super helpful!

hey, i wanted to get back to you about the chris video. I want to say you are right. I was unaware he had hurt so many people, and that isnt okay. thank you for opening my eyes.
I just got back into rally sims and I basically just got a feel for what speed I could carry into corners for the 1-6 but I had always wondered that after bit of say "Left 6 100". Glad your video explained that and a few other things I was unsure of!
"Flat very long...into unknown hairpin...into...deadmeat..." happened all the time for me when i started playing DR and had no idea why a co-driver was there.
Good to know, well made Video sir. I'm getting better everday in dirt Rally 2.0 and this will help me alot of course. Maybe i'll try wrc 10 some times again but i had some big issues with the car handling in that game 😅
While I think these rally tutorial videos are helpful, I also think the little nuances of Rally are much better learned through driving experience and learning the hard way. It's kind of magical looking at these videos if you learned by yourself seeing how without teaching you most likely adapted to the same majorly used techniques by most drivers Whats so special about rally is how ingeniously simple it is on the surface. Everybody uses the same techniques (depending on the car/drivetrain) and yet it comes down to the driver's experience to perform them which sets people apart
Im with you on that, 100%! I was a bit like that myself, have been playing rally games for long enough now that when it came to writing this script, it didn’t really require any research. I had to check to make sure I was on the right path with certain things just in case, but generally it I’ve picked things up through hours and hours of playing myself. Might be trickier for some than others though. Some may have a language barrier that makes it less natural, some might just want clarification over specific instructions, whilst others may never have the time to learn the notes themselves and just want a less frustrating experience from the get go. Thanks for checking out the content, and best of luck with your rallying!😊
Thank you so much for this, been looking for smtn like this for a long time. Now i have finally found it and can actually try to play the damn game seriously again. Cheers
As the director of technology for xboxerialisms who bought this game and never understood the gibberish I absolutely love this video guide as I'm finally able to play on a competitive level against children and win!! I rock! 😆 team me! 🤣
I just purchased a G 90 yesterday it’s very good. The steering is not that heavy or not that light the shifters are very good. The petals are amazing and especially the brakes when you slam the brakes is very good for like immediate stops. The clutch is also very well when you’re by shifting in between gears and also, it is very good for a racing games like need for speed and WRCRC 10
Hi, this simply means try and keep to the inside of the road as you exit the corner. Usually it will be because of some danger on the outside of the corner as you exit 🙂
I remember Wales in dirt rally 1 had a lot of keep in calls at the many tight corners in the forest because the good camber helps the car turn in nicely and I dont think they say good camber in pace notes as opposed to bad camber haha.
As a co-driver my self this is very well made and super easy for people to understand if they are not familiar with pace notes

Dude thank you so much! I am a Brazilian and is specially hard to understand some parts when playing dirt 3, now with your guide, I can fully understand what the co driver is saying, tysm!
That’s great to hear, thanks! Best of luck 😄
@@TraxionGG 😁
Just wanted to say that not every rally game uses this system. Richard Burns Rally uses the Easy/Medium/Hard/Kay system, while Rallisport Challenge used a 1-9 system, with 1 being the easiest and 9 being the hardest corner.
I passed my driving test 2 weeks ago.
I got an instruction to take the 4th exit on a roundabout.
''4 Right over crest'' I repeated back.
Instructors eyes lit up because he's also a Rally fan :D
Really well made videos. You deserve more views
Appreciate the comment!
As someone who used to find the co-driver annoying as can be, i now find myself having wanted to learn what the callouts mean. Thank you for explaining everything i understood it all and now i can race better and hopefully be more prepared
Great to hear!
Not really confused about the pace notes but I still enjoyed watching this, great job
Thanks!
I just got into dirt 2.0 and im absolutely in love. The challenge is refreshing
+++ points for including Sameer's co-driver
I’ve been doing well racing online by trial and error. Finally decided to actually learn.. thanks for being informative and clear, i really appreciate finding the exact video I was looking for ❤
This is one of the best pacenotes guides I could find. Thanks for the Video 😁
Bro this is the best video to learn this fast. Concise, paced and segmented perfectly.. Thank you genuinely for teaching me!
"Samir you're breaking the car Samir!!"
Thanks for sharing mate ✌😉
No problem!
@@TraxionGG Aye, Carry on, stay healthy for all of us & Safety First! Peace across the Globe ✌😉
thank you to bring me the first stage in every event ..... from drift and rice sim games to rally you make me understand how to mix it both and get the best result of rally ....i never thought i can drive that fast and drift that smooth knowing what i'm gonna face next over and over ,,, after few days of practicing i learned how to drive the co-diver sights on my gearbox and engine sound then i start to understand how to tune my car for different stages ..thank you so much ..
I turn these to simple whenever possible so they sound more like the old Sega Rally (Easy Left, Medium Right, etc) If I can't do that I always turn it off... if I can't do THAT... well now I know how to at least get information from their constant chatter, so I appreciate the video!
Not a bad idea to be fair! Glad you liked the video 😊
It's crazy how important it is to use your own language for pacenotes. I really like rallying in Assetto Corsa, but there are only english pacenotes avaible. Even though I can understand english absolutely fine and the range of words used are very limited, I still need that extra little bit longer to process.
I watched this video and my lap times increased by 20 seconds, Thank you.
Very helpful! I wasnt sure what the heck my co driver was talking about. Thanks!
2years late and the basics already helped me alot to understand how to turn corners smoothly in my games 😂 thankyou so much for thus video!
That's great to hear! You are very welcome 😊
I love Dirt Rally 2.0! And I love this video! Anyone enjoy Dirt Showdown? I sure did.
Dear Colin McRae of the Rally sim, thank you for bestowing this knowledge upon a wonder-lust driven novice rally enthusiast.
I shall use it wisely and inform Sammir to LISTEN TO THE CALLS!
The closing words, mentioning Derek Ringer from way back in CMR4, among more popular Phil Mills and Nicky Grist, was a nice touch :D
Doing a night stage with broken headlights was what proved to me how invaluable the pace notes are
Thank you, really informative video! Just yesterday I was watching an onboard rally video and I assumed the numbers were the gears 😂
You can get away with that sometimes, but not always😂 Appreciate the comment!
I just got this video recommended to me while sitting and taking a break before starting my next round of Dirt Rally 2.0 haha
One thing to note: in some countries the numbers to describe corners are the other was around
Ah thanks for the info!
Haven’t really played rally games before, but liking this video for “the numbers, mason.”
(That and how cleanly composed this video is; wonderfully informative and detailed.)
as a beginner, this has been so helpful. thanks for the video.
Great to hear! You are very welcome :)
Very very well explained.
Would be so epic, if either wrc or dirt rally ever put in Samir’s co driver 😂
RBR Pro actually has a Samir mode, well worth a look😂
@@TraxionGG woooow rly ?? Definitely will ! 😂

This is a very helpful video, as I've been sucked into dirt 2.0 and ended up muting the guy after my first race because I didn't understand what he was saying and just thought it was distracting lol. after watching this, I think I'll let the guy speak again.
Great to hear! Give it a go😄
Funny thing is I learned these on my own on these games they are really self explanatory
As a DiRT Rally 2.0 player this video is now in my possession on my SSD.
🙌
Playing dirt on my wheel in VR
I can’t explain how much this helped
2:19 I’m happy you said that because I used to play WRC on PS4 all the time and used to just try to keep the number in mind with what gear I was meant to be in as a fast way to get comfortable with the pace notes. Glad to know I wasn’t crazy or cheapening the system too much.
This video helped me a lot to improve, thank you! Keep up this amazing content:)
Glad to hear it!
Thanks for this content, man. I have started to understand and finally enjoy this game as I thought I would now.
I’m glad to hear it, enjoy 😊
Great job on this vid mate. I've been rally gaming for decades and have gotten by on the information I was given, with good results, but some of it was instinctive reaction to situations because I didnt REALLY understand what my co was telling me. This has clarified a few for me. Thumbs up!!!
Great to hear, thanks for the comment!
They don't seem to use the plus/minus notation used IRL.
I love the pacenotes in dirt 3. Probably my favorite racing game ever
I might try to see if i can get used to it
Thanks for your explanation! This is so helpful to know what co-drivers say. I only hear they are rapping all the time😂
thank you for teh video. I'd really love to see which footage is from which game though
Appreciate it! Any particular clips you would like to know about? Happy to let you know what they are. :)
Quite interesting that the only reason I could never understand the instructions were because of the big numbers they say - I just couldn't fathom what it means "5 right 100". The 100 just somehow converted into km/h in my head which of course is nonsense lol. Thanks for this video, now I understand the instructions fully!
Great to hear! The big numbers used to confuse me too 😂
Thanks for this video! I’ve really gotten into WRC this year; I bought WRC+ (since streaming and TV options are nonexistent here in the U.S.) and WRC 10 on my Series X. This is super helpful!
You are very welcome! I'm also a WRC+ subscriber, the championship has been in a really strong state now for 4 or 5 years and it's just epic to watch😎 - John
Just getting into rally. Thanks for a great video, it's very clear
hey, i wanted to get back to you about the chris video. I want to say you are right. I was unaware he had hurt so many people, and that isnt okay. thank you for opening my eyes.
(0:38) Oh Samir, your still crazy as ever! 😜🏎️
I don’t even like racing games, but i found this guide helpful and interesting
I just got back into rally sims and I basically just got a feel for what speed I could carry into corners for the 1-6 but I had always wondered that after bit of say "Left 6 100". Glad your video explained that and a few other things I was unsure of!
Great video! since i just started with Dirt Rally 2.0 i really needed this tutorial since i barely know what the co-driver's saying lol
Glad to hear it!
I just started playing and I thought number call outs were telling me the gear to be on lol, thx this will help a lot
i just bought wrc 7 (its now downloading) thank you so much for making this video.
"Flat very long...into unknown hairpin...into...deadmeat..."
happened all the time for me when i started playing DR and had no idea why a co-driver was there.
Respect for every co-driver🔥
Thank you for a basic introduction to pacenotes. I have a better understanding.
Glad it was helpful!
Good to know, well made Video sir.
I'm getting better everday in dirt Rally 2.0 and this will help me alot of course. Maybe i'll try wrc 10 some times again but i had some big issues with the car handling in that game 😅
A horror story in two words:
"Don't cut"
Regret is imminent.
"Don't cut"
"Don't tell me what to do Phil!"
TERMINAL DAMAGE
I always give it as Don't, because we were told if you say don't cut, it sounds too much like cut.
Which is the last thing you want!
Me being an American and knowing nothing about rally. Thank you for this, it was very helpful.
Glad it was helpful!
While I think these rally tutorial videos are helpful, I also think the little nuances of Rally are much better learned through driving experience and learning the hard way.
It's kind of magical looking at these videos if you learned by yourself seeing how without teaching you most likely adapted to the same majorly used techniques by most drivers
Whats so special about rally is how ingeniously simple it is on the surface.
Also the codriver's skills. There is a lot for them to think about and manage, not to mention keeping their head when they've almost gone off!
I rock! 😆 team me! 🤣
Amazing😂
I already understand but this was fun to watch
This is extremely useful for me
I ran through dirt 3
It's still fun as hell and with this i know what they said even better
Thanks brother
4:17 The Numbers, Mason 😂😂😂
The numbers, mason. I love that call of duty link
Excellent!! Thoroughly enjoyed that video. Lots of detail and info that was well explained.
This explains soo much just starting out with wrc10.
What a great video. I needed this as I'm getting back to wrc 9. Subbed.
Glad it’s been helpful!
In WRC 10 I hear a lot of times “keep in” after a corner call. What does this mean ?
Hi, this simply means try and keep to the inside of the road as you exit the corner. Usually it will be because of some danger on the outside of the corner as you exit 🙂
@@TraxionGG So, if there is an obstruction at the inner apex of the corner, would the copilot say "keep out"?
@@largol33t1 yep
@@largol33t1 the copilot will say "farewell"
I remember Wales in dirt rally 1 had a lot of keep in calls at the many tight corners in the forest because the good camber helps the car turn in nicely and I dont think they say good camber in pace notes as opposed to bad camber haha.
Absolutely brilliant driving. What an amazing rig setup you have. I’m sure you get real practice value out of that.
