@ I botched the term. It is called the pendulum turn. I think that technique goes by both names. Type in rally pendulum turn and it says that it is known by both terms.
Cutting down the HUD elements is a great tip and I've used it for years. Not only could you say its more realistic that way, but it definitely helps not getting pressured by the state progress bar on the left and the +- difference between you and the leader that pops up from time to time in the middle of the screen. It distracts your eyes and needlessly make you push yourself too hard, just like PJ says.
I think that depends from driver to driver. In F1 for instance, the drivers regularly hear how they are doing with their time and how many seconds they are ahead/ behind someone (for DRS or Qualifying for instance). I personally leave the HUD because 1. I automatically try to only focus on what my co-driver SAYS instead of only looking at the icons, but i keep them in order to still know what he said if he was to quick or I didn't listen in time. And the progression bar on the left is kind of like Cuphead- it motivates me more than it distracts me....
Good discussion in here. Depending on the game, having lots of information to hand is great. For example when I play F1 I like to have the gap ahead/behind, the minimap and sometimes my Drifferential and Brake Bias settings on the screen. In rally though I just want the car and the road as Phil can tell me the corners.
I agree 100%. I found that by removing the progress bar and section time updates I was able to drive a lot more consistently. I was more focused on the driving and not concerned with my time.... just focused on making it through the stage.

I'm a controller plebe so some of the breaking techniques (left foot) aren't as easy to emulate, but holy smokes what a great video tutorial. Now I'm jazzed to go back in and climb the ladder. Thanks so much, PJ
Lfb should be easier on controller imo. You don't have to split your attention between clutch and brake as much. You can just hold down both triggers. I've played racing games on controller before and the most difficult part was throttle and brake control rather than the ability to lfb. Tbf you don't really need to use clutch but I like to on certain cars for realism. I don't on sequential though
Yup, once you're comfortable on the safe parts of the road, you need to get greedy and chase the limits. Then, take a single step back from them and you'll be rapid.
The "left foot braking" is very useful when driving a car with a sequential gearbox, but do you have some tips for H-patern? Or how to learn "heel & toe" easily?
Damn PJ, I wish I had found you earlier! ;-) Great advice, and I can't believe I've yet to hear about this ladder climbing tip. What a useful tip indeed! Great points all, good job Sir. While I generally agree on removing distractions, I do feel the progress bar is pretty useful. I've started stages way too conservatively sometimes and the progress bar allows me to compare to the leader and begin to push and drive loosely. Great tips, anyway!
If it works it works 😅 I have considered a more traditional setup but it'll require a bit of investment. I priced it out including the addition of handbrake, shifter etc. and it's a bit... pricey at the moment 🙃

I play dirt rally 2.0 with the keyboard and i'm very good but i often get distracted, this video helped
Keyboard players are surprisingly fast in this game 🙂
Thank you for the great tips now my screen just has speedo monitor visible and its helped a lot plus the gearing situation turning the gears up you notice the difference in speed it takes longer to hit the limiter thanks PJ brought me up to scratch there have a great day
Glad I could help 🙂
This actually helped so thanks man :)
Happy to help 🙂
One the most challenging video games ive played, yet the most rewarding. It feels like i constantly improving on an actual skills...bit useless mind you, but it is getting easier on a wheel
Great tips, thanks - finding them quite useful!
That was a very good lesson 😍
I'm a controller plebe so some of the breaking techniques (left foot) aren't as easy to emulate, but holy smokes what a great video tutorial. Now I'm jazzed to go back in and climb the ladder. Thanks so much, PJ
Lfb should be easier on controller imo. You don't have to split your attention between clutch and brake as much. You can just hold down both triggers. I've played racing games on controller before and the most difficult part was throttle and brake control rather than the ability to lfb. Tbf you don't really need to use clutch but I like to on certain cars for realism. I don't on sequential though
The leaderboard tip is an awesome tip!
I have no problem driving on gravel and dirt etc but driving on a smooth track that’s where I struggle haha
On tarmac you should try not to slide around so much as it slows you down.
I figured out the timer one myself eventually! Lol it fucks me up everytime
Sometimes I turn it back on, crash and immediately go "nope, off you go" 😄
5:50 oh wow, i didnt even know you could do that, lol. that could be handy!
Really helpful tips , thank u 👍
great vids thanks mate! Such an epic sim
Game's always fun to play, even though it's hard 🙂
Great channel and great content! Savage to see another Irish sim racer doing content. We should look at collaborating at some stage.
Thanks, and keep it up 👍🏻
Maybe once I start streaming on UA-cam (I only do it on twitch right now) we could work something out 🙂
@@PJTierney yeah man either way I think it would be great to spot opportunities to help our channels to grow
thanks for the tips! Loved the ladder-climbing one.
Glad it helped 👍🏻
You need to cut a lot. By that I mean A LOT!! Cut corners straight, achieve higher average speed, get better times = win.
I haven't used H-Pattern so I'm no expert I'm afraid. I'm a paddle-shift guy.
Damn PJ, I wish I had found you earlier! ;-) Great advice, and I can't believe I've yet to hear about this ladder climbing tip. What a useful tip indeed! Great points all, good job Sir. You've won my sub. (hopefully more premium members will sub you as well, I'd like to see where you go with this channel.Good Luck!)
Glad you're enjoying it all 🙂
The ghost tip is gold
I use it in lots of games 👻
Great vid, subbed.
Great video! Very useful tips
thank you for the weight transfer tip
It helps, tricky when you get it wrong though 😁
While I generally agree on removing distractions, I do feel the progress bar is pretty useful. I've started stages way too conservatively sometimes and the progress bar allows me to compare to the leader and begin to push and drive loosely. Great tips, anyway!
Some drivers don't mind it, others pay too much attention to the bar 🙂
Brilliant channel PJ very informative and very well presented cobber
Thank you 😎
"left foot breaking"
Me on keyboard: you mean ring finger breaking?
Ladder climbing is kind of genius though
I know some people who can set Top 100 Time Trial times with a keyboard, they're insanely good.
@@komrander7497 because the game is fun and I'm broke
Have fun however you like. I use an F1 rim; people hate it but I'm fast 😅
No distractions help a lot I put them all off other then co driver signs!
Everything off except for the rev meter for me. Sometimes I have the split times on when I'm working on a setup.
@@PJTierney
So update.
Switched to manual transmission
Turned on speedometer.
And I don’t know how to turn off co driver signs.
rallying wit a f1 wheel? legend
If it works it works 😅
I have considered a more traditional setup but it'll require a bit of investment. I priced it out including the addition of handbrake, shifter etc. and it's a bit... pricey at the moment 🙃
I didn’t know you can select ghost car from the leaderboard lol thx for the info.
You can select up to three of them I think 👻👻👻
Fantastic. Cheers PJ
