The FIA World Rally Championship is one of the most varied and demanding forms of motorsport in the world.
Manufacturers and drivers take race-going versions of road cars through snow, ice, gravel and tarmac, in any country, any time and any weather to set the fastest times.
Modern WRC cars feature complex hybrid systems similar to Formula 1, with highly sophisticated suspensions systems built to handle the extreme conditions these cars are put under.
To succeed in WRC you need to be incredibly brave and precise.

About a year late but anyone have any extra questions? Feel free to ask a codriver, me!
Do you adjust the pacenotes after the climate you drive in? For example, changing a 6 left to a 5 left when its snowing or when it rains a lot?
@@Xilef-iu2jp Yes! Usually we prefer using terms like “slippy”. Surface is a key thing in rally, you always note surface changes so the driver knows how the car with react, like tarmac to gravel to mud to sand. As much as the degree makes sense to downgrade, it’s more the shape of the corner that matters. If you downgrade a 4 to 3, that’s a significant difference in entry speed and exit versus noting, “slippy exit” or including a “care” or “caution” notation to the corner itself!
tripple caution! TRIPPLE CAUTION!
is there anything you would like to change about the sport?
@@las10plagas that’s always a tough question. Racing in the US, we have a bit of a different atmosphere compared to rallying elsewhere in the world. Any of the rally1, rally2, etc cars are hard to get into the US due to import laws, so I’d probably say a law change that would make a part of the sport a bit more accessible to people that don’t want to build a grassroots car!
@@awhllie that's an awesome answer :) didn't know that. thank you, codriver Oliver!
As an F1 fan getting into WRC, this was the PERECT video to get me up to speed. Really looking forward to this season with the new regulations. Cheers PJ!
Glad you liked it 🙂
11 months late to this but boy is it overwe=helming a bit. how did the first year for you fair? also, its difficult to get idea how much time main rally would be for(!), does it clash w fp2/fp3/sprints?
for more info, as you all saw on the video clips of WRC, DO NOT expect these drivers to grip through every corner like you see in normal motorsport. These roads are mostly narrow and tight and powersliding/drifting is practically the only approach when driving flat out.
The thing i love in rallying is the quote "When in doubt, Flat out"
Finland is a gravel rally and the tbc round is the Ypres Rally in Belgium (tarmac). And Ogier is not the only driver to become World Champ with three different manufacturers as Juha Kankkunen managed this trick before: 1986 with Peugeot, 1987 & 1991 with Lancia and 1993 with Toyota.
But I must say I am a huge rally fan since childhood and into rally reporting and statistics since longer than I can think, and I couldn't have explained the WRC any better to a new fan than you, PJ, absolutely excellent video!
Thanks for the kind words, and the corrections 🙂
I wish they'd make a rally game, where you would have to transport them from A to B between stages.
Working for a game developer, I know that would be an extremely demanding task. Would be cool though.
Closest you can get right now is Forza Horizon 5.
dirt rally
Euro Truck Sim style simulation between stages but with heavier traffic would be sick
Forza Horizon?
@@angelodignomo1360i wish dirt rally did that. That would be amazing because their cars handle perfectly. Forza feels like mario kart 🤮
This video is perfectly timed. Last year in April I started playing WRC9, I was super amazed by it, but never got to see the 2021 season because I didn't get the channel. Now I'm super hyped to watch this year, tomorrow Monte Carlo rally gonna start 🤩
Monte is a real unknown as it's the first time these cars compete 😯
@@PJTierney yeah will be interesting to see these new gen cars on the track! Would love to compare starts from last year as well because as far as I know the hybrid motors will also be used at the starts
In the US we have NASCAR, which had humble and gritty origins. It's pretty bland now but as child I was always fascinated by rally and Baja races but never truly understood how it worked. Thanks for simplifying it all. Cheers from the US. Subscribed!
man, Rally is much more fascinating then I thought. I watched a little bit of rallying when the WRC Akropolis Rally was on and I was amazed
Excellent summary. I love rally, but as an American I often get confused looks and questions when I say that. This sums it up better than I ever could.
You answered nearly all my questions. Thanks for the video brother!
Nicely put together PJ. Well done!
Thank you so much for this video! Starting to watch wrc for the first time, this is sooo helpful!
Glad I could help 😀
Love these type of videos pj, it’s nice to see this content more
Thank you, will try 😎
I'm learning via dirt rally but you just helped me connect the puzzles! THANK YOU SO MUCH 🤘😭🤘
Glad I could help 😀
Great video!
I remember wanting to watch this series as a teenager, but I just didn't have any way to at the time. No TV channels I had access to carried it and UA-cam was just starting out. Glad it's easier to be able to watch it now!
Much easier to watch now, yes 😀
Can u suggest me good youtube channels where I can watch old rally races

Another awesome video! WRC is something I know very little about, but always kinda had a little interest in it. Glad to actually learn something about it.
Glad you liked it 😀
I watch it since I was 6, and I still cant get bored!
It's different every time 😀
Great video, told me a lot of stuff i didn't know about WRC and makes me want to watch it, thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it, season starts this weekend 😀
Great video PJ. I like the format. Well done.
Thanks, video came out well 🙂
Thank you, just starting playing Dirt Rally 2.0 and I enjoy it a lot though I don't have any idea how rally race really work. But now I have some background knowledge.
I've watched WRC for a long time but I still liked this video. Thanks for helping new fans!

love the video btw! kinda overwhelming and still so much to know about but this is interesting!
There's a lot to the sport but you pick it up over time 🙂
Thank you so much for this video it was just perfect. I've always been interested but never took the dive. I'm trying to do so now We'll see how it goes!
Glad I could help, rally's fun 😀
Monte Carlo is where the madness of Group B took place.
wow this is a great video for new people, fantastic work!
What a wonderful job by explaining everything so basic and sorta intermediate level in an eloquent manner.. appreciate your efforts mate.. Thanks.. good luck . 100th comment
Awesome video PJ! great work
Thank you, glad you liked it 🙂
Absolutely brilliant video!
RIP Craig Breen
Great video!
Well put together
Thank you 😀
this video is the definition of dedication and quality content. it's so easy to understand that even alien in mars knows what rallying is
Thank you! 😀
Good stuff as always!
Thanks 😀
Fantastic video, the explanation of the co driver was some but make a lot of sense. Finally will be able to understand him in Dirt Rally.
Thanks, glad it helped 😀
Very good video, lovely explanation. Thank you! 😄
Glad you found it useful 🙂
Great video--I am learning
This is so good.Thanks!
Glad you liked it 🙂
PJ WE NNNNEEEEDDD YOU BACK. Plus I love the vid and hope you get back into streaming
Thanks 😀
I am still figuring out what I want to do with my UA-cam (and any potential streams). Not sure what the future of the channel looks like yet but we'll see 🙂
What a perfect video to get informed. Thank you
I'm happy you found it useful 😊
Great video PJ. :) Edit: I would say another main feature of the top rally cars is the widened track width, not just body panels (they are not always the same thing in history)
Yup, a good example in fact is the Lancia Stratos in DiRT Rally 2.0. On snow/gravel it's got narrow tyres (like most cars) but it also looks like they're set deep inside the wheel wells.
Thank you! Really cool
Glad you liked it 🙂
Awesome video, I have a much greater understanding of the sport now!
Enjoy, it's good fun 😀
Great video! very informative Thank-you!
Glad you found it useful 🙂
Great video, I just got into WRC playing the game on steam.
Thanks for making this. I’m a car enthusiast, and not knowing at least the basics of rally just seemed wrong.
I'm glad I could help you out with this video 🙂
Rally Croatia is next week, that will be a good one to watch. 👍
As an f1 fan. I want to expand my knowledge on motorsport like WRC, Extreme E, Formula E and Motogp. I might not be able to watch the highlights of practice, qualifying and race due to F1 events happening on the same day. But it'll be fun to know about other motorsport competitions.
Fia-WEC is also a good one
WRC Highlights are good on Red Bull TV. 30 minutes at the end of each day.
I recommend checking out Rallycross when it starts in the summer too.
@@PJTierney Thank you 😊
@@doughnuts5364 Thank you 😊
Love this video, Could u do a video on the history of rally? Your commentary is very good and i prefer you over WRC+
That seems like a good idea 🙂
excellent production value on your vids!
Thank you 🙂
WRC I love it! Wish the coverage was a bit better from the website. And they need to do something about 720p being the highest resolution for paid subscriptions. If it wasn't for that I would still be subscribed.
I've not tried WRC+ yet, may do this year. For me, the 30 minute Red Bull TV show after every day of action is a decent way to catch up, and I normally do a decent job of avoiding spoilers.
Hey man! loving the content! I see you put out content for both f1 and dirt 2.0. Do you got plans for more videos for dirt? i think today i watched all your videos on it. the game was on sale and i read the comments it being the dark souls of rally so i came over here to youtube to learn about rally as i truthfully know nothing up until i found your youtube page so i look forward to seeing more!
No plans to make more videos on my channel for the game, but I do help run the official channel and may get a few more guides up on there 😀
@@PJTierney appreciate the response!
I learned so much from this. Like if you want your child to be good at Rally you should consider naming them Sebastien.
Lame jokes aside thank you for this! I’ve always admired the sport from afar but it seemed intimidating to get into even as a fan. This helped a ton.
Glad I could help. Rally is pretty cool.
Idk why.. But petter solberg will always be my fav driver.. He was such a good sport..
He's very entertaining, and Oliver is like that too 😀
great work
Thanks 😀
good explanation, tks

Hello @PJ Tierney. Thanks for this information. I am going to start a project with WRC and wanted to get all the granular details about rally racing. Is it possible to schedule and call sometime to go through the rally racing please?
Great video
Glad you liked it.
excellent!

I knew somebody would 😉
Rally kenya in about to start it's always been a treat
It'll be a fun one for sure, Portugal was good this weekend.

In middle finland the old neste rally and newly sector rally last year we were driving to the next stage and we raced kalle rovanperä
That's awesome 😃
Great video. Asked this in the past, if ypu can do a video on how to setup the car in some of the WRC games (wrc 10) It will be great. I struggle understanding the diffs
Thanks 🙂
If I make setup videos in the future I’ll definitely consider it.
@@PJTierney Thank you. I Actually qualified this year through the WRC 9 FIA Rally star Challenge to compete at a competition where the winner will get the pricr of competing in Rallying for real. I have a competition om a crosscar in March

@@PJTierney Thanks
I think WRC is my best sports on the planet and I hope to join one day....
I searched "Rally WRC explained" in the UA-cam, and... Nothing good popped up. Day later, I have *this* masterpiece on my main.
UA-cam wtf
I'm a big fan of rally about 35 years
But the one thing that's always had me is out the red and yellow board work. Like even the splits. Like have they some Internet connection or something when you pass them to collect Time you did in a stage. Its the one thing iv never asked about cuz I'm not part of any club I did marshel once but that's it
I believe you're referring to timing transponders.
I would need to look it up, but I believe it's essentially a laser beam from one side of the road to the other, and when a car breaks that line it gets recorded and transmitted to the timing systems. That's how I think it works in F1, and WRC might be similar.
@@PJTierney Thanks I was always wondering how they can get the correct times. It's similar to f1 then
Rest in peace to Craig Breen
I started yesterday with WRC 9 and I am having fun. Something about the stress and tracks sucked me in. New to racing games and F1 was too frustrating for me, although their wheels look absolute gorgeous.
Any tips for a newcomer to handle the speed? 😅
Brake earlier and listen to the calls, that's it really 😀
Tried to find a video like this, finally found it today, had to search deep
Glad you liked it though 🙂
What did you search for to find it? Maybe I can improve the title.
@@PJTierney it's fine, don't need to change anything. The video is below the official channel and wtf1
@@riptidev10 Hard to compete with those for now 😅
F1: oooo i grazed the barrier now everything is broken
Rally: hehehehe 10 ft jumps go weeeeeeeeee
Love both of them still
Different flavours of fun 😎
I really like watching rally videos on youtube from the inside of the car, it's so exhilerating! If I subscribe to WRC, is there an option to watch the rallies from this view? Or will there primarily be footage of the race from the outside?
I think Rally.TV has onboards for every driver. Not sure if live or post-event.
@@PJTierney Thanks! I'll check that out.
This is the best motorsport because everything was freaking insane at least in my opinion, heck they don't even modified the roads just to make it safer for the pilots instead the car is the one being adjusted even a dog is part of the track itself 🤣
you forgot to mention how despite being held on public roads nowadays spectator safety is taken very seriously with marshals announcing the arrival of cars a few seconds before they come so everyone is on their feet in case of a crash, spectators are not allowed on the outside of corners or below roads which is enforced by marshals stationed every 50 meters or so. Also the rally1 cars give a live feed to race control where if they see something is not up to snuff they give the sector marshals instructions (or call for reinforcements from the volunteers). And in some areas you are still only a couple meters from the cars going by
All good points, WRC try to make sure rallies are very safe now given the history of Group B and all. They even threatened to cancel Rally Japan this year after safety was called into question.
Pj I can tell from the accent youre irish like myself so lets pray for a craig breen win😂🇮🇪🙏
He's finally got a full-season drive, he better make the most of it 🙂
RIP Craig 😢
I just started watching WRC after the 2023 season and after playing WRC9 and now I'm really sad because I came in right after Craig Breen crashed
I miss Craig too 😥
They need more car company’s or manufactures in rallying to make it more interesting , at the moment they only have Ford , hyuandi , Toyota and that’s it that’s pretty bad
Yes they need, but being in wrc is expensive and most car companys cant afford it. Citroen left couse money problems. You need 30 million for yearly expenses for staying in, if you wish to compete on high level you need alot more. so far only Hunday and Toyota has been capable to thouse expenses and thinking its woth for them and help them sel lthey cars better. Some reason i dont see BMW doing something like that or some other company. Ford barely stays in its more like legacy project for them.
The worst part of rally is getting pelted by rocks while watching.
Its also the best thing because the spectators dont have situations where they slap the biker on a track. And most of the time they embrase the rock flinging likr a water ammusiment park and jump and turn away
watching this in 2023 in kenya the safari rally started today.
It was a good one to watch 😀
How long (time) is a typical race? I have done a lot of research and I still can’t figure this out. Maybe I am misunderstanding something.
The easiest way to figure that out is to look up the standings for any individual rally, as the total time is the result.
Rally Japan last year was 2 hours 43 minutes for example.
RIP Craig Breen, seeing his name on the team listing made me realize this vid was a bit old
neat
What are some must-see events I should watch as someone new to WRC? Notable rallies in history, legendary ones, etc. I'd like to go through an "All-Time Best of Rallying" experience.
In terms of classics, watch Spain and Wales 1995, in fact check out the 95 season in general.
@@PJTierney Thanks! I've been an avid rally sim fan for years but for some reason only just started actually watching. Do you have any recommendations for where to start out with the best of Group B rallies and the best of Colin McRae's career?
@@evorm7329 ua-cam.com/video/8Tasxu_ig5M/v-deo.html
My historic knowledge is limited, but for McRae the 95 season is important. I would also suggest the 2001 season because there was a great battle between Burns and McRae.
When it comes to Group B look up the seasons the Lancia 037 competed in, and the years Michele Mouton was at Audi.
@@PJTierney Thank you so much. I now have an entire playlist of rallies saved including your recommendations. I'm currently watching through the 95 season and it's tense as hell. These drivers are made of pure adrenaline and reflexes. I didn't expect things to go wrong with a car during a rally this often though lol.

Hope this helped 🙂
Also go check out dirtfish.com, they're the big news site for the sport now it seems.
Car go brrrr
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Hello im new to WRC
What happend if is a crash or mechanical failure for example in stage 10/17 and can not finished the stage is then DNF for this stage or for or the whole event?
And second question What determines who goes first and who goes last?
If the team can repair the car, it's normally a DNF for the day, but they can try driving again on Sunday to get to the Power Stage.
The running order is first determined by championship order (leader 1st) and then after a day I believe it's sorted by current event standings (leader last).
@@PJTierney
Thank you for explaining.. Great video👍
Where is a good place to get coverage and highlights for WRC? I live in America and have been told the redbull app is a good place to start
Red Bull TV or Rally.TV
Is there some sort of app where you easily can follow the rallyes?
Rally TV
Biggest issue of wrc is accessibility. RallyTV cost 2 times as much as a F1 TV subscription and typical sports channel don't have it. There only is really short highligts and very select onboards accessible on youtube
Sometimes @EASPORTSWRC run code promotions for playing the game, I know a lot of players who watched the first 3 months of this season that way. Should help a little so keep an eye out for when those come up.
@@PJTierney I got the game last week because of the VR update.
Amazing when it does not crash but it is EA after all haha. Did not get a code for RallyTV though unfortunately. I am relying on the RedBull highlights so far.

As an F1 fan looking to get into rally, where do I need to go to find out what rally fans are upset about these days? Everyone seems so happy chappy in WRC 😂
Reddit maybe, those bunch are constantly if not always negative
Most are upset about the few manufacturers, few compatitors, short rallies, something like that. At the end of the day, we still watch it anyway lol
3:05 They Rally Batman?
So each driver has only one chance to make a good time on each stage ?
(or they can retry a stage) 🤔
One attempt only.
If they crash during the stage they can continue if the car can able to go , or retire if it didn't work.
No!
Most stages are raced twice, with a few hours apart.
Usually something like this:
Thursday - stage 1
Friday - Stage 2, 3, 4, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 5
Saturday - 6, 7, 8, 9...
etc.
I can think it works by Class group A B International Rally or anything else qualified by BHP every car have like 285BHP to some 310BHP is the same qualification, Ford Focus RS RX have some 710BHP supercar like mostly after I was bought PC simulator Dirt 4, lot of them about rally it's based on level that bring doze of dozen houses team cafee, hotel tuning durability made by level like car engine can not be destroyed with even after high level of car crashes and performance upgrade in same time marked by stars as well super car rally.
I don't understand what you're trying to say.
@PJTierney Shortly I wished to say that good cars are everywhere like Ford Sierra I was tested it on DiRT 4 competitions with all world rally drivers weekly competitions for game cash, like Sierra version have 310 BHP, imagine all house yard these so good cars rust forever, like on Super car rally we won't be able to see lower BHP than 750, not like Historics raplly with power around 100-120BHP with car speed to some 180km/h to controll it we must drive, Ford Sierra is one of best cars ever I was found it works like Eminem song about heroes Slim Shady instead of Monster what was best it is gone therfore Slim Shady still laughts about Monster slayers same as car serial I was watched when I was been kid called travelling knight all enemies was tought car will be catched but it was not Ford Sierra is car like that totally is, it seems not driving and it only winns like same type of car can be overmodified from some 275BHP to 580BHP and it will always win it is cheat at all. things that are not allowed to be tuned ever on real rally, all rallys have BHP restrictions of it is QUALITY we can WINN rally same as car can have excellent stearing like Ford Escort it always escort you not by speed by most greatest headlining we will ever found.
What Rally Fury players should be watching:
