This video has two parts, the first for new viewers of aot and the second part is for people who have read to the manga ending.
My hope is that at least one new viewer of attack on titan watches the series as I propose in the video by watching to episode 80 and then skipping to episode 87 and ending it there.
hope you enjoy the video! I'll be posting more soon I promise

Attack on Titan truly teaches a valuable lesson:
Nothing you do matters because people will hate you no matter what, violence is inevitable, in the end we're all simps, some mysteries should remain unsolved, and most importantly trying to please everybody will please nobody

I personally think a different ending is going to happen. The anime literally cant adapt chapter 138, because the see you later panel isn't in episode one, which remember, was overseen and altered by Isayama. Why would he remove the single longest piece of foreshadowing if it wasn't for a alternate purpose?

Ever since I read the ending of aot like 5 months ago I wondered why people were so furious with the ending because while I did think it was flawed I still thought it ended the series really well. This video perfectly encapsulates the reason why some people despise the ending so much and it's given me a broader understanding on the world of aot and hatred of the ending. While I still really enjoy the ending I appreciate having your point of view to pretty much answer all of the confusion I had when I read the ending. Thank you for creating this. Keep making content bro!
Also having that one panel where Eren wishes selfishly to have Mikasa love him for ten years at least, only to be read in a whinny tone instead of cool Eren voice was hilarious. Really good use of Paraprosdokian

  • @drexnog1905
    @drexnog1905 Рік тому +39

I took Eren crying in the end as him breaking down after so many years of repressing his emotions, him saying he doesn't want mikasa to look at anyone else, is just him lashing out and regretting not being able to be with her, all of this is really in character for eren,
as for the Ymir and mikasa relation, it's never stated Ymir herself can look into the future, in my opinion she's just watching Mikasa since she was a kid because she relates to her, and wants to see if it really is possible for someone like her to let go of her blind love, it's not that mikasa was the one destined to show her that, it's that she happened to show her that,
armin being "the one who saves the world" and talking to the marleyans to let the eldians live is a nod to when he convinced the soldiers to let eren live, eren trusts armin will be able to advocate for the eldians, he trusts he's capable of doing that as he has trusted him before and always,
as for eren killing his mother, it's not that he is a slave nor that he really wanted to do that, but the founding titan can't change the past, only interact with it, the past is already set in stone so there was no other way forward, it had to happen, it just unfortunately ended happening by Eren's hand, same as when he talked to his father,
eren is a tragic character, yearning for freedom and happiness, but never being able to achieve it himself, instead he achieves it for his friends,
also the last panel of the new tree doesn't mean titans will come back, it's a symbolism that no matter how many years pass or the wars in the future Eren's legacy will never fade,
in the end he managed to do one thing: he wiped all titans of the face of the earth
P.S: sure the ending was rushed and it shows in the dialogues, but i think Isayama got across the points he wanted for the story and it's conclusion, even if not in the best quality, but it's all there, it's a satisfying ending if you understand it, the issue it's that it's not that easy to understand, i just hope the anime fleshes out the dialogues and scenes more, to get those points across better, and no i don't want any AOE or any ignoring of the cannon as i think the overall ending was perfect, just the execution wasn't ideal

I agree about the laughing bit. Eren was having a mental breakdown at Sasha's death. C'mon after going through all that with your mates you'd probably be closer than family. Hearing one of them died in the room next to you then last words were one of their signature lines would have broken anyone. He took it differently considering how his mind was all mixed up at the time. So this too applies.

I've always thought that the whole entire point of the story was to show the struggle between "humanity" (the love, respect, and camaraderie people have for each other) and "biology" (the need to ensure the survival of one's kind so that they can give rise to future generations). Eren is the physical representation of this struggle, as he as a person has immense love for his friends (like what he expresses during the train scene) but is also somewhat controlled by the Attack Titan (the titan whose whole purpose is to continue pushing forward to secure the survival of the Eldian race). In the end, Eren chooses his humanity, and in turn, his friends.
When Eren gains control over Ymir, it's because he is the only one who understands how deep her love is for the world, however sick and twisted that love may appear. Zeke couldn't do it because he was too focused on solving world peace. I imagine similar holders of the Founder's power failed for the same reason. They were too focused on solving problems to understand why the fuck everyone is actually born: just to live and have a decent time doing shit that you LOVE. This information is literally spoon-fed to readers in chapter 137 during the conversation between Zeke and Armin in Paths.
I think Eren thought that the only way for peace to actually occur was to make titans go away. The only way to do this was by setting Ymir free. How does Ymir get set free? She sees Mikasa kill Eren. Why does this set her free? Mikasa's immense love for Eren was comparable to Ymir's love for King Fritz. King Fritz was doing super shitty things as the man at the helm of the Eldian Empire, just like how Eren was doing shitty things himself (like killing billions of people). The only way to stop King Fritz was to kill him, but Ymir "loved" him (I agree that this is gross and weird, but keep in mind this is the only love that she knew as a slave), and refused to kill him. The only reason that Ymir was still alive in Paths is because she was still a slave to her love for King Fritz and the family she built. If Fritz died, then her whole reason to keep living within Paths would die too, ending the power of the titans. Mikasa LOVED Eren, like a lot, obviously. But she knew that the only way to get Eren to stop was by killing him since he literally told all his friends via Paths that it was the only way to do so. In the end, she chose to kill him. Ymir saw this, and was like "oh damn maybe it's okay to let go to this love if it means ending thousands of years of violence" and promptly peaced tf out, taking the power of the titans with her.
Eren didn't want to Rumble the fuck out of the world (there are countless scenes showing Eren's grief) but it was the only way that he could draw that parallel to King Fritz that caused Ymir to learn the lesson that would eventually FREE the world of the titans. Freeing the world from titans would temporarily end the hate the rest of the world has for Eldians, leading to his friends living out the rest of their lives in relative peace. Eren didn't give a fuck about the future of humanity, only his friends. Does that seem illogical? Yeah, but love just be that way sometimes.
I believe in your video you say something along the lines of "if Ymir can see into the future, then why didn't she end things sooner" (or maybe you didn't but I want to address this anyway). I think it's because to the Founder, everything happens all at once. It's like what Eren said: his thoughts had become incoherent because the past was happening at the same time as the future. I'm not going to explain further because describing how omnipotent beings perceive time is impossible but I think I've made myself clear.
I am an ending defender, but I do have to admit that the way that all this info is delivered in the story is MESSY. It is very difficult to piece together and it took me a while. I'm not here to say that I have supreme media literacy, but I enjoy diving deep into narratives. This is just what I've pieced together. Isayama could have done a way better job getting this stuff across to the audience, especially since so much of this is introduced at the very end, which leads to a feeling of dissatisfaction.
There's a lot I haven't been able to explain in this fucking essay I ended up writing, but oh well. I might add more later.
Great video by the way, I think your proposed way of watching the show is really cool.

The ending was about putting events into perspective. Just as we see events from thousands of years ago is how they wanted to show the lives of all of our favorite characters. They are a blip in history and war and fighting never really ends. This puts more focus on who they were rather than what exact impact they had on the world because people always fight no matter what. They wanted to show many themes getting tied up at once:
They also wanted to show that the titans weren’t the only cause of war.
They wanted to show that Ymir and Eren both yearned for freedom and while being difficult to understand and so powerful were both really just children in the end with uncontrollable emotions and urges.
The ending was meant to be confusing and unsettling so there can be no simple way to end the show and stop thinking about it. It’s realistic in the way that nothing is wrapped up cleanly. There wasn’t some grounded meaning to all of their actions or all the lives lost but instead it was just something that happened in history. I think it would have felt cheap if they just said there was peace forever after the battle of heaven and earth.

I totally agree with you. How eren broke down and wanted mikasa to love only him, also how the founder's power messed up his mind. That's something way off his character. Not to mention the fact that founder ymir loved the king(this sucks). I believe the ending is not good. The point of never getting freedom and that eren died without changing anything can be a little acceptable, still not that much but its atleast better than how eren's character and motivation completly took a downfall. I hope things make more sense in the anime ending. Who knows if we will get an original ending, but i look forward to it.

but Eren always cared about his friends and Mikasa. @@superrio5374 Yeah that's true. Eren is the true hero. He make the world seeing his friends as heroes. Like saving the world..although they're eldians.
And you know like..his dream, who wants to destroyed all of the titans in s1, it becomes true. When he dies in manga, the titan power has gone from the world. And, it's for his friends too. Like connie can see his mum, annie can see his father, also they can live longer than just 13 years right? Its for them. He loves his friends. He cares about his friends. He's doing that for them.
And what about paradis island? Yeah, eren choosing to trust them. And choose to die. Yeah. He wants his friends to KILL HIM. Its his plan.
Cause he's already help them. Like, destroying the 80% of the world. And, its help paradis so much right? But at the end, paradis is destroyed. It's so hard going through all of this for him.
So personally, i think eren doesn't really want to do rumbling..for his freedom. He is doing that, because of his friends. Its just....temporary freedom for his friends and paradis.

titanfolk and other morons online have completely destroyed the minds of people, I honestly loathe all of them. The ending was great, when its animated it will be even better, the internet or really the mainstream audience absolutely loved the newest special that was realeased, and they will love the 1 to 1 ending of the manga when it comes out. I think the problem AOT faces is that there is a loud minority of people on the internet that are sour just because they didn’t get their way. Its not that they didn’t understand the manga, the manga makes sense its why they nitpick small inocuous things that aren’t important to the story(eren crying about mikasa for example)
They thought things were gonna go one way, they sat and theorized with each other ever month about what was gonna happen next, and they became so sure of it that when isayama pulled the rug out from under them they felt stupid cause its like “what? He can’t do that! IT WAS SUPPOSED TO END LIKE THIS!” it is sunk cost fallacy and like children they started trashing things that were honestly not deserving of such pointless, childish criticism.(lets save the world alliance panel and eren crying because hes gonna die and can’t spend the rest of his life with the people he did this for, comes to mind)
Me personally I read the manga all in one sitting when it all came out, I thought it was great, I thought it made sense, It wrapped up many plotholes and questions I had, every action made by each character made logical sense to me based on how their individual character arcs played out, and they all fleshed together to make 1 cohesive story. The series ended in a way that was grounded in reality and rational emotions from very complex characters it was a hurculean task and isayama did it in a way that was still satisfying and happy considering everything that has happened, and that is something im more than ok with.
The endings theorized on the internet for “how it should have ended” are all cringy stupid traumaporn where eren stands over rubble with his blond historia baby proud of the destruction hes made(like that makes any sense for how erens character is from what we’ve seen) its cringe, its a terrible poorly written ending that honestly spits in the face of a complex character like eren.
Eren is a 19 year old who saw the future and was unable to change that, he didnt want to be anyones slave and yet he became one in order to save the people he loved from their imminent demise. Its a tragically beautiful story. Hes a flawed character, but his motivations in the manga are well spelled out to the reader and people still make fan theories that would have went completely against his character.
Tldr: the ending was great, id really like to argue with anyone that disagrees with it, could it have been more fleshed out? Sure. But the themes are all still there you just gotta find them.

First Timeline (Cabin) In Ch.138, Eren didn't want to kill billions of people, so he didn't do the Rumbling and died from 13yr Titan Curse. Second Timeline (Manga) Eren woked up peacefully in Ch.1, Did 80% Rumbling and wanted to make the alliance look like heroes (Code Geass did it first) and then died from Mikasa by getting his head cut off. Third Timeline (Anime) Eren woked up shooked from a nightmare in Ep.1, eventually he remembers the Manga Timeline if you watch episode 87 closely. These memories give motivation to Eren so he could do 100% Rumbling and save Paradis from Discrimination and Cycle of Hatred unlike Manga Paradis being bombd

I prefer that people read the ending themselves and make their own conclusions since I have seen some people love. I'm in the middle when it comes to the ending. I liked Mikasa stopping Eren. Levi finishing off Zeke and him seeing his past comrades. Jean c*cking Eren. Reiner surviving to end. However Ymir being love with Fritz and Eren not knowing why he did it was a fumble.

Honestly the plot points of the ending are fine, its when you look with a maginfying glass it bgets muddy. All we need is some better writing, more fleshed out motivations. It seems Isayama just wasnt given the time to explain everything that he wanted and so it came out...weird. Im not an AOE believer, I think AOE people are missing the point of the whole story, but im also not a 100% ending defender, i see and admit the flaws. I disagree with eren crying though. It makes total sense, for years he was supressing his emotions, and now in his final moments he admits them to his best friend. Gotta realize Eren isnt even an adult, hes 19. Practically a child still, the age of a freshman in college. You think college freshman are adults? hell no! thats just me though. I like the ending, but it NEEDS to be expanded upon for me to fully say i think its the best way for it to end

How I interpreted the ending is different and I'd like to share my perspective.
I believe the theme of giving up one's dream is prominent in AoT. As Kenny says "Everybody is a slave to something". There is always something that pushes a character to do what they're doing. An example of this would be Erwin. He seemingly fights for the good of humanity, but we later learn that what's pushing him is a selfish need to know the truth. He was contemplating abandoning the Survey Corps to reach the basement before he dies, but ultimately he chooses to let his dream go. We can see the same scenario with Armin giving up the ocean as well. The narrative treats this action as heroic. On the flip side, we see Reiner who seemingly fights for the good of Marley, but we learn in his conversation with Eren that what drives him is his need to be recognized and become a hero. Ultimately, Reiner was not able to let go of this dream despite being fully aware that he is killing innocents.
For Eren what drives him is freedom. The problem is it's very difficult to define freedom, so we have to ask what is freedom for Eren? There are others who would interpret this as the survival of the island, but I disagree. I believe Eren's freedom is visually represented in "This is Freedom" scene. Every action he does, from casting his friends away to activating the rumbling is so he could reach this scenery. Like Reiner, he realizes the actions to get to this point is pure evil and it eats at him, demonstrated with Ramzi. Ultimately, Eren is not able to let go and essentially sacrifices everything around him, including but not limited to his mother and a chance to have a life with Mikasa.
As for the consequences of Eren's actions, we see that Paradis is destroyed at the end. I believe this is thematically consistent with the cycle of violence AoT portrays. We have learned that Eldia and Marley have essentially been at war for 2000 years, committing the same atrocities to each other. The rumbling perpetuates this cycle of violence, in fact Eren even describes it as the "ultimate violence". We see characters like Sasha's dad aware of this cycle and says that the current generation must shoulder the hate so that it isn't passed down to the next generation. We also see that this hate can be changed to understanding through Gabi's character arc. Eren isn't really concerned about this though, and so the cycle between Eldian and Marley continues as implied in the last panel.
With all that being said, I don't really disagree with your interpretation. I still thought the Ymir/Mikasa connection was poorly done. I could see this working if King Fritz wasn't portrayed as pure evil, but how it is at the moment, it's pretty terrible. To be honest I didn't like the ending when I first read it. I was watching the anime with my anime only brother only through this "rewatch" I was able to piece this interpretation of the ending. I don't know if it's because the anime portrays its themes better or it's because I've had these ideas cook for a longer time. Anyways, sorry for the essay I wrote, hopefully you have the chance to read through this.

  • @Mask60YT

Although i do agree that the series ended terribly, i dont think eren announcing that he will commit the rumbling should be the end, it just feels like an abrupt way to end the series. I think the way the series shouldve ended was eren explaining to armin in paths that he is destroying the world because he has no other option that would protect paradis, and that he and everyone else has the freedom to stop him, but if they do try one of them will have to die and that armin should stay home and live a long fulfilled life and that would be the last we see anything of eren from his persepective. Then it continues pretty much the same fixing a few flaws and only 80% of marley gets destroyed instead of 80% of the world and then in the epilogue have it so that paradis was able to sign peace treaties with the surviving nations, however due to the mistrust that lingers in the populace since most of the world didnt actually have to witness the horror of the rumbling a world war with paradis inventing the atom bomb and ending it like the US did in WW2 leads to a cold war where one day the worlds arsnel destroys the world due to peoples hatred. So essentially a similar epilogue to the manga, however i think paradis inventing the atom bomb causing everyone to hate them again them helps prove erens justification of commiting global genocide, like yeah you can create treaties and integrate paradis into society, but you cant solve a millenium old grudge, and eventually that grudge will come back so its best to wipe out all the hatred in the world. Anyways i think this gives the story a bittersweet ending, the bad guy was defeated but the problem that created the bad guy was never solved and it caused much more carnage than what the bad guy intended, making you question would it have really been better for the bad guy to have succeeded

The current manga ending happens in the anime, and it's the first timeline. The second timeline is when Eren completes the rumbling and finally frees the Eldian people but kills all his friends. The final timeline is Eren completing the rumbling, but everyone aside from the Allience is killed, and he ends the curse of Ymir and removes titans from the world.

and what I get from people who hate the ending is that they hate romance or they're less human, there are so many character changes whether it's sudden or slow. eren whining to armin how he loves mikasa and wants mikasa to think of him even if he dies is the most humane thing I've ever seen, eren knows he loves mikasa but he only has 4 years and he's also tied to his future (arguably becoming ymir's slave) to end titan's power (freeing ymir) hence why eren made a timeline where mikasa & him live in the cabin for 4 years and then he dies because of titan's age, then "see you later".
but still I respect your opinion about the ending, as a person who is "OK" with the ending, opinion of people who hate the ending makes me Hype this Part 3...

They were bombed when Mikasa was an old lady lol, they lived a long life because of him. Eren wasn't some Eldia nationalist like young Grisha with a greater purpose, he is literally a crybaby killing the world because it wasn't what he liked. Just like a kid getting angry when the toy they longed for wasn't all that they expected, the child throws a fit. In this case, this child has a goddam Nuke, so think about how cool is it from that point of view, a story about an ignorant child given the power of a god, not a story about "freedom"

There are so many loose ends but you’re right
If it ended with eren destroying the world that would be the inevitable ending to his dogmatic belief that only his people mattered.
But also all the Ymir stuff is confusing
Why does that worm thing have to do with Ymir’s power after death???
Bc that worm thing started all life???
Ok so why does she have power after death but no other
Eldian does ? Once they find the worm why are they trying to kill it??? Wouldn’t make another founding titan. Is it stuck just to Ymir l???
    wtf is going here????
And definitely if Ymir made her own choice why the hell is it still connected to zeke????? Who cares about zeke he couldn’t do anything
And didn’t he die bc eren used all the dead. 9
I thought this was following ares type deal. Ares believed that mankind was the problem and getting rid of man was the way to a peaceful world . This is closer to the truth as ridding the world of titans doesn’t fix the root problem. Getting rid of titans is no different then getting rid of guns. You can make anything a weapon and man will still war and suffer. So Zekes plan will not work either

the timeline of aot are the paths itself... there are infinite outcomes and infinite events with some moments in the show that have to happen like anker points ( like eren saving mikasa or erens mom has to die no matter what + many more) those are fixed events but everything else has multiple outcomes but we as the readers/watchers can only witness a single path and only get little glimpses of other timelines. only the founder sees all the paths all the outcomes at the same time that’s why eren apologizes to the random child that gets stomped later because in the end it doesn’t matter if eren decides to start the rumbling or not because there is always a path where this kid gets stomped because every decision and every outcome has already happened and only he is able to witness it eren probably saw every single event that can and will happen in every single path the moment he touched historia that’s why his brain overloaded
there is a path where eren runs away with mikasa but there also is a path where he starts the rumbling just like with ymir there is the path that starts the story we know where she jumps infront of the spear but also we see a little glimps of the path where she doesn’t do it and cares for her children and never starts the titan story at all because she passes away at some point and the powers will be lost forever because nobody eats her and that probably starts the filler school arc of aot so in my opinion even this off canon arc is actually canon

It's about showing that every generation in any place goes through a struggle and that in the end when enough people who lived through it have died and no one is around anymore to remember that it doesn't matter.
This is the human curse. History maybe doesn't repeat itself but it rhymes. The same things will happen again under different circumstances. This ending is so hated because it throws the viewer back to reality that this is the truth.
This is what humanity will be until it's extinction. And that makes us not feel good. People want fiction and fantasy.

One thing that gets me about all of this is how Ymir just happily smiles and watches Mikasa holding Eren's decapitated head. I get she was a slave and had a bad past, but making someone else a slave to you so you can use that person as your doll in a dollhouse to play out dreams of what you wish you did for yourself is disgusting to me. Also, being happy to see him be killed by someone who loved him just to make yourself feel better? Disgusting. Eren isn't the one at fault for wiping out 80 percent of humanity - Ymir is. Ymir is the one who basically led him to do everything he did for a very specific outcome, which was his death. Her being a slave, she should have been like, you know, hey wow it'd be pretty shitty to make a slave out of someone else since I understand that it's like
inb4 someone comes in hating on me because uwu she was a slave she can do no wrong uwu even if it means making someone else a slave right to their death and involving all these other people and wiping out 80 percent of humanity to see her dream of doll number two murdering doll number one to live out her dreams of being free at the cost of millions of people's freedom uwu
I do think Eren tried to justify what happened to himself and to Armin, such as using the Rumbling to kill the people who kept waging war against them to try to wipe them out (which was the entire world because they were creating an alliance together to kill everyone the island, so technically he, at seemed to be, justifying genocide with genocide. Saying hey look this is the fear you brought on my people and now it's your turn). Then there's also, well either that happens OR they come to stop me and kill me and be seen as heroes.
Since Eren is only 19, well, I think it makes sense that there would be flaws in both these plans. Obviously they weren't perfect but I don't think he could do much in his situation if anything at all except try to justify it to himself and give it a reason, because Ymir's influence was in true control as opposed to him in control of himself (which is supported by him telling Armin how his head is muddled and stuff).
Ignoring the lackluster ending overall, I think my biggest point of aggravation is how they didn't put enough explanation in to the specific fact that this was all Ymir's doing and that Eren was always calling himself free because he /wanted/ to be free but was not truly free. I wish it went more in depth about Eren was a slave to a slave and what his real feelings about all of these storylines really were (such as like, would he have personally desired to use the full, real Rumbling if it had been wholly his call and he hadn't been influenced by Ymir).
At this point I kinda wonder if Isayama's original ending of killing everyone would've just been better LOL.

If anything attack on titan, as every other story that fiddled with time travel did, tells us that nobody should EVER write about time travel. Nobody has ever done time travel well. Nobody has ever understood time travel.

Tbh the time travel shit is quite bearable...what bothers me most is how the show is trying to justify Erens actions and and how it was pushing for love as a theme which felt absurd...Isayama was trying to push for the "interpret the ending in your way" type of thing like other shows but he failed to do this...aot isnt that type of show for that...Isayama sucks at writing philosophy...what pisses me off more was that they kept the same ending for the anime yet we were promised an anime only ending

Just here praying the anime disappoint those delusional folks who think eren love historia and he's the baby father, want 100% of the world wiped, the alliance to be k1lled and Annie being executed, i hope Isayama never change the ending 😂
