Wrestling Bios Presents - Brawl For All: The Real WWF Tournament
When many think of World Wrestling Entertainment or American professional wrestling as a whole, the general public's first thoughts are that wrestling is scripted and pre-determined, and they aren't wrong. Wrestling has rose in popularity despite not being legitimate and fans of pro wrestling have always understood that their favourite encounters in the ring are planned well ahead of schedule. But what if the WWE allowed their wrestlers to have real showdowns in the ring? That is excactly what the Brawl For All tournament was, a chance for professional wrestlers that worked for the WWF to compete in real and legit encounters.
This video takes an in-depth look at the Brawl for All tournament held on WWE Raw back in 1998. From competitors like Dan Severn and Steve Williams being hot favourites to win the whole thing, to the underdog Bart Gunn rising up to surprise everyone. Topics covered include:
00:31 - What was the Brawl for All tournament?
03:31 - Why the Brawl For All didn't sit well with wrestling fans
05:37 - Vince Russo creates the Brawl for All to get back at JBL
08:01 - The Brawl for All entrants and the lack of Ken Shamrock
11:35 - Brawl for All rules
16:24 - Dan Severn's first Brawl for All match
18:10 - Steve Williams becomes the favourite
24:08 - The Brawl for All Final
24:51 - Bart Gunn vs Butterbean
    - Loads more!

It's a real shame what they did to Bart in the end. SOOOO unfair that they put Butterbean in there to kill him. I have a feeling you are right, that this was literally "punishment" for beating Dr. Death earlier on in the tournament. I feel like JR himself may have had some pull in making that Butterbean thing happen.

Dan Severn is not only a super fight champion, he's first and only triple crown UFC champion. Severn won 2 UFC tournaments, and also held the UFC heavy championship.
What has shamrock achieved in the UFC? Just that one fluke guillotine choke on Dan Severn, his only legitimate competition victory.
Most of shamrock's opponents were tomato cans, and whenever he stepped up against a quality opponent he'd be made humble.
Severn did beat shamrock in their second fight. If not for that fluke guillotine victory, shamrock wouldn't have any accolades in the UFC.
He's not on Severn's level, he's not enough to even lace Severn's boots.

@@igorivanov299 the were both top MMA competitors at their time. Shamrock lost to Gracie and then took Gracie to a draw, where Severn lost to him in their one fight (although Severn was inexperienced at that time). Shamrock also beat Kimo fairly easily, where Gracie had had trouble with him. Shamrock also had a very good run in Pancrase in Japan, beating Bas Rutten for example. You can argue that Severn was greater and maybe he was, but it´s far fetched to say Shamrock couldn´t lace his boots, especially since in their two fights, Shamrock won one by submission and Severn won a long and drawn out second fight on points.

"Pancrase" oh you mean those slapping matches. lol.
Bas Rutten another overrated fighter, what's his UFC record, I dare you to look.
Kimo isn't really in the top echelon of fighters. Shamrock hasn't beaten anyone worthwhile besides his first encounter with Dan Severn, and by which he fluked.
The second match against Gracie was pathetic, he just layed there looking for the draw, didn't attempt anything the whole match. Shamrock is one of the biggest frauds in MMA history. In professional wrestling on the other hand I believe he was underrated and deserved a title shot and more recognition, but for his name to be spoken within the same breath as legends like Dan Severn, Royce Gracie, Oleg Taktarov, Don Frye, Mark Coleman, Marco Ruas is a travesty and MMA historical revisionism. Those aforementioned fighters all did something shamrock couldn't get close to, actually winning the UFC tournament. That was the goal was it not in the early days?. The super fight match was created specifically because shamrock couldn't get it done, so they created that spot for him. We have to be honest here, shamrock gets underserved recognition for something he hasn't really achieved in.

Brawl For All is one of my favorite laugh out loud behind the scene stories. They paid winner purse twice, first to Steve Williams, then to Bart Gunn. JR hyping Steve because he's Boomer Sooner. It pretty much ruined almost everyone's career whoever was involve in it. We saw the last of Brakkus and PCO after this. Henry Goodwin, who still got messed up neck, didn't last long after this. Williams never recovered. As punishment for winning Bart got fed to Butterbean

One good thing you could say about the Brawl For All was the tournament-style format. It would give wrestlers more exposure and make the matches more meaningful instead of just random filler.

Yea I liked the concept too but they just needed to tweak a few things. 1. Do not have a real super heavyweight champion box the first brawl for all winner at WrestleMania. Because no matter who won and how badass they thought they were, the chances of beating a legit world champion were extremely slim so that's a lose lose situation. Also do not try to shoehorn in your picked winner like Dr death. They set the whole thing up as a way to push him in his wwf debut as a legit badass but You can't push someone in a real SHOOT style tournament because you cannot predict the outcome. They should have just picked all the guys and let it go the way it goes tournament style, And then when you have the winner, have something figured out for him in a big payoff match.

Honestly when it was happening I was also pretty interested in it but I do see the problems with it. I think Scott Hall said it best that “wrestlers are built for show not for a go” there is a huge difference in working out too heavy good looking body for television versus working out and exercising and training for a combat sport.
The main problems with it I saw besides it being a stupid idea is how mainly Bruce Prichard keeps saying that everyone was chosen at random and they weren’t really trying to fix it so Steve Williams would win.
I rewatched A few of the brawl for all fights earlier this week and honestly there were at least two fights I remember watching where you could tell that they were trying to rig the fight with their point system. I forget which fight it was I was watching but the guy that was really winning the fight that have actually landed like four punches had zero points and there was his opponent who had landed one punch and he had 20 points.
I want to see the other fight that I watched was actually the one with Steve Williams and Bart Gunn I want to see that one they had Steve’s points ridiculously high to the point that if Bart did not knock him out he was going to lose that fight on points.
The other thing that I thought was stupid about it was they shouldn’t have had it takedowns be a thing in it. This should’ve just been a straight up tough man contest we’re all you did was punch. You’re going to award points for takedowns but everyone’s going to be wearing boxing gloves? That just made the WWE look so socially awkward to me like the really don’t have any hip to them at all and they know nothing about real sports.
You can’t put those boxing gloves on guys and say it’s a mixed fighting style tournaments because if guys can’t really use their fingers to grapple than your takedowns are really just guys wrapping their arms around each other and trying to throw them.
And if they were going to do a point system they should’ve had a third-party come in if this was going to be a shoot and everything was going to be on the up and up then it wouldn’t have mattered if a third-party was there or not if you weren’t trying to fix this thing. I have someone that actually knows how to keep points do this and not just have WWE put who they want out there so they can try to fix the fight.
The other thing that I thought was very low class of them was once things didn’t start going their way was that they felt the need to have to start punishing people who they talked into doing this. So you tell a guy to go into the ring and fight for real but he’s not the guy you want to win so when a real fight he wins you get your panties in a bunch? I’m sorry but the idea of real life pussies like Bruce Prichard and Vince Russo, guys like that that would get their manhood took in less than a minute if they were in prison being able to dictate what happens to someone’s career either by burying them or putting them in the ring with someone hoping they would get seriously hurt really is irritating to me. Butterbean straight up said that he was brought in by WWE to basically ruined Bart‘s career. If you don’t like the guy because he embarrassed the guy you thought was going to win then just be a man about it and tell him to his face and send him at home. Honestly that’s what they should’ve done with all the WCW and ECW wrestlers. Just be honest and say that you’re a little bitch and you can’t get over the fact that as a grown man you worked had another company because at the time you didn’t have an opportunity to work here but since I’m a bitch I’m not going to tell you that to your face but I’m just going to bury you for the next year on television so you’ll be worth nothing for the rest of your career.
