I remember the Bret Hart-Isaac Yankem cage match with Jerry Lawler suspended in a shark cage. Lawler, legitimately scared of heights, started having a nose bleed (which he deliberately caused) and was hollering for Vince MacMahon to get him down. This was before Vince was revealed to be the owner and was still only thought to be a commentator.

17:50 - One of my favorite moments of the early genesis of the The Attitude Era. Bret’s promo was absolutely incredible and the way they played it with McMahon made it seemed like there was a high level of truth behind it all. Everyone from Bret, to Austin, to UT and Micheals were at, or near, their absolute peak and the angles were awesome. 1997 was my favorite year for professional wrestling. The WWF changed significantly and NWO was still going strong in WCW.

However I would absolutely love a video detailing the history of the house show circuit and how they were similar/different than TV events. In particular, how did house shows work while wrestlers were also doing TV work. Could anyone get tickets to these events? I think other more casual fans would appreciate a deep dive into the concept of house shows and how they were used in major promotions.Thank you so much for creating these videos! I’ve heard that even tho it didn’t appear on TV til the 1980s, that the cage was originally designed like that back in the 60s or 70s when Bruno Sammartino was feuding with THE SHEIK (Sabus’s Uncle) over the WWWF Title. Made it easier for them to work and for the Sheik to climb with his crazy boots.

This is a great history of the cage. May interesting talking points. The traditional mesh cage is my go to because it looks more hardcore. Never a fan of the blue, but it's easier to see what's happening more clearly in the blue & black cages. You always seem to find the best vintage photos- the Hakushi photo is badass! It's odd that a good number of Diesel title matches were dark matches, even winning the title in a dark match. Great show of confidence.

IDK it always seemed weird to me that you work to get locked into a cage with your rival and the way to end the feud is to essentially run away. I've personally always preferred pins and submissions in cage matches. The sniveling heel should be made to get his comeuppance with his shoulders pinned or by tapping out rather than not being able to escape which is what they usually did every time leading up to the cage being booked. It's all semantics though, if the match was quality the finish could be anything and still be good.

@@Mayhem5150 In the carny days and early territory days, that was actually the idea of the cage. They didn't use the cage itself as a weapon back then (well I'm sure they did but that wasn't the draw), but it was a common heel tactic to just run away from the babyface and lose the match by count out to either prevent a championship loss or for the heel to just taunt the face and work up the crowd. The cage was intended to force a definitive end to the feud.

The Big Blue was easier for Hogan to climb, and was also easier to get a handheld camera between the bars to get a good shot, and in general was easier for wide cameras to focus on the wrestlers. The ability to drop the cage from ceiling was a game changer. Before that, any cage match required a lengthy intermission to set up. As my dad commented to me after the Snuka/Muraco cage match (Buffalo, NY edition), It took twice as long to set up the cage as it took to have the match.

Years later while watching NWA I was so disappointed that their "steel cages" were simply large panels of backyard fencing. I couldn't believe it & to me as a little kid that fence 'cage" was just oh sooo lame.

Thank you for these wonderful videos. Captures many of the best era in Pro Wrestling. Miss the "Big Blue Cage" days, and the epic Evenings watching "Saturday Night's Main Event!" Where do you find the massive database of WWF/WWE Results lists, like this 12:00? Eager to revisit the "house Shows" I saw here in Las Vegas, back in the late '80s. Thanks again for a great channel!

WWF's "Big Blue Steel Cage" is, was and will always be my favorite cage! So many great matches in that cage, so many great memories! Macho King vs Ultimate Warrior - Ultimate Warrior vs Rick Rude - Bret Hart vs Owen Hart. I just loved this cage and it fit in pefectly during that era of the WWF it was used in! Long live the "Big Blue Steel Cage"...And "WWF"

Wow what a nice surprise! Only a few days ago I was wondering about this old style of cage used in so many good old WWF matches!

Great video! Thanks a lot! I knew that there were 2 different cages, but never gave it that much thought. To hear the full history of the big blue cage was very interesting! Nice work!

16:04 A still picture of Rene Goulté grabbing Jerry Lawler. Hahaha! 😂 I always remember seeing Goulté in stretcher jobs or when "security was needed" but I remember seeing him wrestle SD Jones way back in the day so I thought when wrestlers retired that they were forced to be security!😂

Great video.. I always loved the Big Blue Cage.. Was lucky enough to see a few live matches at the los angeles sports arena back in the day.. Ringside seats costed $18.00 back early 1990s.

You forgot about the Kennel from Hell match between Al Snow and Big Boss Man. That used the old cage and the Hell in a Cell.

The Hogan vs. Andre cage match at WrestleFest blew my mind. When Andre dropped his elbow on Hogan with that primal howl you could hear in your living room... I didn't think Andre could do anything like that at that time.

Havnt even watched vid yet but I remember watching Warrior v Rude with my dad, (who wasn't a wrestling fan). Warrior did his usual run around the ring and my dad burst out laughing. I asked what so funny and he said " The dozy hippy cant find the door". Well I was an absolute mark so there was a lot of friction in my house that night. Good times. Thanks for making a vid on the cage my friend.

I feel the hell in a cell is used too much and I feel the standard steel cage should return to take it's place in matches that don't require things taken to that extreme. Great video 👍

Tito would get his new belt two weeks later on tv 👍. Check here on youtube (or on network for better quality) Tito Santana and Ricky Steamboat vs Greg Valentine and Brutus Beefcake from Maple Leaf Gardens..this is the start of Valentine Beefcake team and Tito working his way back as no 1 contender . ..one of best tag matches I ever saw.
