Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Steve Blackman in the WWF
When in came to the Attitude Era, the general rule was to be over-the-top, turn the volume up to 11, and you'd get popular. The formula worked for many superstars, but Steve Blackman went in a totally different route. Not being well versed on the mic meant Steve had to prove himself in the ring, and seeing how Steve managed to remain in the WWE during the entire Attitude Era, we can definitely say that he was good enough in the ring.
From his debut in the WWF in 1997, his tag team with Ken Shamrock, his heel turn that saw him battle Shamrock in a range of different match types, to his partnership with Al Snow and the "Head Cheese" faction, Steve Blackman may not have been in the main events but he was consistent and fun to watch in the ring. Considered as one of the toughest men in wrestling, Steve Blackman's story gets told in this mini documentary from Wrestling Bios.

Blackman was the real deal. He had the thousand-yard stare I've only seen on dudes that could take you apart before you could blink.
Steve Blackman could legitimately carry that stare, not everyone can back that stare up, I've seen guys with that same stare who got their ass kicked, but Blackman is the real deal
Thinking someones stare is conducive to how dangerous they really are is your first mistake.
@@TheGlobuleReturns It's more the ability to notice the calmness in the stare than the actual gaze. It's hard for some to know the difference. There is a difference.
James Thompson vs. Alexander Emilianenko is a decent enough example.
If anyone is starting a fight with someone and you sense that calmness while you know you are forcing yours, best to just walk away. If not, it's gonna hurt.
@@MrJadedGreen I mean that’s just each fighters mindset.. doesn’t necessarily mean anything regarding the outcome of the fight. A lot of guys who have that calmness only have it because they’ve never actually been in a real fight. Not saying that’s what this is, but just an example of a situation where calmness means nothing.
@@TheGlobuleReturns Calmness is the absence of fear, nervousness, anger etc. All of which can get someone hurt. Most people who've never been in a fight are nervous at the least. People fear what they don't know or haven't done. Human nature. The calmness comes from either knowing what one is capable of or just a natural ability to not fear. When the body is in check with emotions and the spirit is when a person is at their peak. You are correct though. The stare means nothing. It's what's behind that stare.
I met him in Atlantic City. I was going in the hotel and he was coming out. I called his name. He stopped, walked back to me and shook my hand. Cool dude. Underrated attitude era wrestler. The best Hardcore Champ
How was he? Probably still in good shape eh?
Still fit like he can step back in the ring.
That's awesome to hear he's a cool dude, I always thought he was back in the Attitude era and I felt he was severely underrated.
Isn't he an actor now...
Prove it
As you said “attitude era fans will nod in approval” I was already nodding my head. Lol
Haha, same for me. He is a legitimately good man and extremely hard worker. His recovery from malaria while slowly progressing and never giving up is equivalent to his in ring work. He started off barely a jobber and eventually found himself and became a solid upper mid card guy. He also had some awesome matches with Owen Hart.
1000% love the gimmick and it was a really good wrestler, super underrated.
Martial Arts is awesome, Blackman was a must for the attitude era
lol me too
Two years bedridden with Malaria, and still able to muster 50 pushups, and 10- 15 minutes in a gym.
#RESPECT
two year bedrest from malaria? Is this a meme?
@@pajeetsingh He had Malaria... and came back to be one of the legit most badasses backstage... and back to his wrasslin career. Now, as far as I can tell, he is a Bounty Hunter.
@@pajeetsingh it was explained in the video
After reading the linked article in the description, it shows he really did go through Hell, and the issues lasted for half a decade.
Underrated worker and legit hardman. Loved his gimmick, his feud with Shamrock and his iconic match with Shane McMahon.
Steve Blackman should be in the hall of fame by now if you ask me.
Right there with you. Blackman was one of the single most underrated performers I can remember. Loved his stuff.
I agree. I always thought Jaime noble was underrated has well.
@@TG5455 I agree but Steve came out against the WWE after the Benoit murders and I don't see Vince being that forgiving.
@@Rockhound6165 Knowing WWE they will take a while to forget about that one and put him in but who knows.
Steve Mufuggin Blackman !!
Steve Blackman loves his fans. I live in Harrisburg PA and when I got locked up in DCP it was Steve Blackman who bailed me out! I told him what a huge fan I was and he smiled and laughed and he loves his fans.
That’s pretty cool. Why did he bail you out? Did he know you or something?
"I'd put him in the same class as Meng" - Bob Holly
Wow, you know someone is tough when they get discribed like that ... by Bob Holly, of all people
Meng must not have gotten wind of that statement, since Bob Holly is still living.
Bungle 0h I remember Bob saying that and my own jaw dropping, knowing that Meng would of killed him lol
Cool story here. My uncle who married into the family was friends with Bob Holly. Use to play basketball with him here and there. Still has a WWF racing jacket Bob gave him in his closet
Yeah those so called though guys. Bob Holly , JBL ,Ron Simmons Billy Gunn and Godfather would get murdered by Blackman I'm not saying those other guys aren't tough I'm sure they can fight
@@georgemunro319
They roughneck tough, Blackman disciplined tough
I haven't watched a wrestling match since 2002, but I can't stop watching these vids!
I feel the same way. Crazy, these videos are addicting. Great work.
same here. stopped in 2000 but love these vids .. bringing me back to the teen years Von Erichs vs Freebirds , Surfer Sting 4horsemen etc !!
Same here, I stopped somewhere around ‘00.
I don't watch much wrestling anymore either but Wrestling Bios is awesome!
I stoped watching around 2001-2002 but these videos got me back into it. Ive been watching again for, about a year now.....thanks a lot 😲
Blackman is one of the most underrated guys of the attitude era.
To this day I think his entrance music is the best.
@@flightofthebumblebee9529 Which theme? He had 2 of 'em.
I remember Blackman had a t-shirt that said sumpin like "YOU WILL TAKE THE PAIN AND LIKE IT"
It said Take the pain and like but your version sounds cooler. :)
I love how you focus on the ones who aren't Mega Stars all the time. Always great work! 🖒
Me too! These are the guys that never got their own DVD or documentaries.
Agree whole heatedly
Yes I agree fully. I really enjoyed several mid card matches back in the day. So many guys deserve a mention
Definitely appreciated.
Iron Mike Sharpe Duane Gill Barry Hardy Italian Stallion Jumping Jim Brunzell all need coverage
Steve should've been Kano!
Facts
That would be interesting. Probably could've been Scorpion or Sub Zero if he wanted to be a ninja too, to be fair
Mind blown
Oh damn 🤔
still can!!!
Legit Hardman! When his theme played you knew it got serious.
You also knew that when he had that awesome first theme with the guitars that played that all Hell was gonna break loose.
He was one of my favorites back in the day. The Lethal Weapon nickname definitely sold it for me.
Blackman's legacy is definitely fine wine to me. While I always appreciated his contributions, I didn't realize the true value of what he added until years after he retired.
It's rare for a WWF star I know to leave on his own terms while still being used and promoted. He was just all around solid, and I loved watching him. Sounds like he had no problems in the WWF and again, that's extremely rare. I'm glad he was able to showcase his talents to us.
The real Mufuggin' Problem!
He is mufuggin amazing
He's as cold as ice
And willing to sacrifice...
I miss Blackman. I remember when I used to watch wrestling back in the late 90s and early 00 as a kid/teenager. I loves his hardcore matches!! Missed those days.
Back when wwe was arousing good old days 😥
Steve is the real deal. His matches with Shamrock were legendary.
He and Lance Storm would have been an interesting tag team: Serious Business
Correct
J Dub Would've loved to have seen that.
As much as I disliked storm that sounds cool
Lethal Boredom lol
hi
I watched this the week I came down with covid in New York in September 2020. I sat there on my own in my apartment, throwing up, burning up, unable to breathe, numbness in limbs, and just generally feeling like hell. I knew of Blackman's story but listening to this gave me hope and inspiration at a time when I really needed it. All I could do was sleep and I lost about 30lbs of muscle. I knew I'd have a long road ahead of me, but Steve's story has and continues to inspire. Thanks for making this.
Glad to hear you came back strong, currently I am suffering from COVID , I never took the vaccine and never will however I have got hit with it hard and have also lost lots of muscle and it will be a long road to get it back... I thank the good Lord for muscle memory do.. Steve's story will help me get there also. Greetings from Dublin Ireland 🇮🇪
I am in a much better condition now and only recently got over a third bout which was more a blip than anything else. Like yourself, I'll never get the vax.
My advice is to allow your body time to rest and only slowly work individual body parts back into shape. If you can, get blood tests done and check your hormone levels as C19 has been shown to drastically reduce testosterone. Also check your B vitamin levels. Clean diet, fresh air, and plenty of sunlight when you can get it in Ireland (from Derry originally so I know the difficulty there).
We'll all get through this.
@@joeryan82 great advice mate , I appreciate that, ahh Derry , it's been so long , last time I was i was boxing in the early 00s.. anyways thanks for the advice I believe we think the same in many ways..
It's a cold
@@bryangray936 this was no cold
Steve was intimidating just with his prescence. And it worked
Steve was a badass for not saying much. Like you said his work spoke for itself. Always liked his matches against Shamrock.
Wrestling needs more Steve Blackmans.
@@toddsleezer3580 Really? Like whom?
@@toddsleezer3580 There aren't.
UA-cam: This video does not meet our terms or conditions
Steve Blackman: Come again?
UA-cam: This video meets our terms and conditions 😁
Good one
😂😁
Steve Blackman needs to be induced in WWE Hall of Fame
That'd better than a coma.
Inducted btw
Pwi hall of fame
Steve Blackman was an awesome performer and athlete. He didn't need a label like heel, or face! He didn't need a gimmick. He was just Steve Blackman!
Alot of people might say Blackman doesn't have much personality or character but to get over being bed ridden for two years to make it into the WWF takes alot of character.
9:39 he wanted to clock in go home without any drama, god I wish every body did that at work
retepoteil ikr? I hate it when co-workers bring their stupid problems with them to work and expect everyone to feel sorry for them
This upload needs a mufuggin revisiting, my friend! 😁
I like how you say “shenanigans.”
Very underrated wrestler I enjoyed his character, the al snow backstage segments were gold
Steve Blackman was the perfect Hardcore Champion!
Steve Blackman and Shamrock was one of my two favorites growing up. I always liked martial arts so it made me happy to see guys like them. Glacier, Earnest the Kat were another couple favorites.
Blackman had that booming tribal drum theme which made his titanrton "light up" to the beat. I say that's the most awesome I seen!!! Each time it "lit up",we get to see different scenes of him training and using those nunchucks etc.
Hardcore LEGEND. Didn't care about his promos. He had SKILLS.
Steve was one of my favorite wrestlers. He was truly missed used.
Blackman was such a badass he didn’t need a gimmick or clever words. He just walked in, wrecked his opponent, and leave. Top notch worker.
He still is a badass...
I remember when he went off on Marc Mero bout steroids and wrestlers dying young lol he was intense
I'm convinced Head Cheese have one more run in them. 2020 needs to be their year!!! Another great vid man
Fair play, I forgot about the Blackman, Shamrock and Farooq team up. That should've been an almost unstoppable faction.
A great wrestler. I always wished they would’ve put him with a really good manager who could’ve done all the talking.
That's a really good point mate. It's sort of like how Paul Heyman helped get Brock Lesnar over. Brock is obviously legit but at the start I felt he had zero charisma, and without Heyman it wouldn't have been impactful as it was.
Cornette would have been a good mouthpiece for him. But inevitably Steve would have had to turn heel at some point, and he's a natural babyface.
Who would be a great manager during the Attitude Era?
@@roryslaine7896 Brock had no charisma? Lmfao that's great
@@kingofkings69ner He didn't though? Lol. Compare him to Stone Cold or The Rock. Did he have charisma? He had presence, but not charisma. His whole shtick was being the big beast who didn't talk but beat everybody up. That's hardly charismatic is it?
I loved and still love going back and watching this guy. He was so skilled and he didn't need to talk. He was the Barry Sanders of WWF.
Here in South América Steve was one of the Top wrestlers in the 90's. Martial Arts are very popular back then here.
One of the best physiques in wrestling.
Great video. I was one of the Steve Blackman fanboys when I was a young teen during the attitude era. Guy was just killer to watch. Had a lot of underrated matches
The man, the myth, the legend. I'm stoked someone's took the time to put this together. What a beast Blackman was/is.
Steve Blackman was everyman, if everyman could drop erm everyman. (how stupid am I).
Hope everyone's doing good.
Blackman earned my respect as a wrestler 👍
Blackman was a badass. Wouldn't wanna provoke him. He'd smash your face in. I think if he made a surprise return in wwe, imagine the pop from the fans when his intro music hit. We'd all freak
Most people wouldnt recognize the music or even remember who he is.
@@dildonius Yea the squeakers wouldn't you're right, lol
The new generation dont know about him they all about cena and john cena sucks
His style would be perfect for today where martial arts and strong style are so massively pushed
He's almost 60 now but damn at some point between 2010 and now that would've been too good
Blackman always when I was a kid reminded me of a swiss army knife, he got a move for that and he is badass
Steve Blackman was my first wrestling figure that wasn't one of the WWF rubber figures.
Wish he'd do one more match
I'd like to see a Val Venis episode. Keep up the great work!
Goldust Vs Venis is legit in my top 5 favourite fueds off all time.
Goldust saying "Hello Val" on Raw is still my biggest ever wresting pop!
Val's cheesy one liners were always great
@@ashleynewman3360 my favourite was when Blue Meanie/Bluedust did a Goldust style video on Goldie😂
*HELLO LADIES* followed by the cheesy 70's styled porno styled theme will always hold a special place in my heart and I'm straight all the way it's just something so generic and genuine that's how well Val Venis pulled his gimmick off! You're god damned right he needs an episode! .😎
Val had good in the ring skills
Malaria almost killed this man, instead, he recovered when most men would of died. I think this was the most badass thing about Mr. Blackman. Even his name is badass!
Imagine blackman being a paul heyman guy. Where heyman did all the talking, letting blackman do all the work.
Love Steve Blackman I thought they should’ve pushed him more his very talented.
Pretty sure he sued the WWE in the early 00s.
Being young, I love Steve Blackman, really sold the Lethal Weapon. He came, kicked ass and left, that was his gimmick for me.
The Lethal Weapon was class. I really enjoyed his teaming with Al Snow
He's as cold as ice ❄
Steve Blackman could be just as effective saying nothing at all than a lot of guys could cutting a promo.
You should have included all the stories about Steve Blackman real life brawls and shenanigans. The stories are some of the funniest and coolest lore within the WWF, the dude was the most legit guy in the WWF.
I shook Steve Blackman's hand. Dude was super serious when the rest of the wrestlers at the airport were just cool as hell. Paul Bearer, Chris Jericho, Dean Malinko, and Undertaker were there. All pretty awesome dudes.
He should atleast win the intercontinental title and tag titles.
He didn't play!
I really enjoyed watching Steve work. We need more guys like him with his skill set and toughness.
He worked over Sunny backstage blowing her back out leaving her panting like a 50yr old cigar smoker.
Once recovered she piped him off.
Al Snow gave Sunny hell for leather, hammer and tongue in a wheelbarrow, again he worked her over like a good un.
Lord help anybody that jumps bail on this guy.
Steve Blackman was beast! One of the few wrestlers that could actually fight lol.
Yep. Him Shamrock and Angle.
If you took blackman and angle together, you got Ken Shamrock, lol
Dan Severn
I don't even know who this guy is and I loved every minute of this video!
I always enjoyed watching Steve Blackman in the WWE. I loved his intro song! I always thought that he was criminally underutilized.
Hollywood could've made this guy an action hero star.
Wow he scared malaria out of his body and Vince didn't punish him for his wardrobe. Incredible.
Even tho his promos weren’t great he still had the intense look which helped to keep his credibility. I hope he’s living an awesome life nowadays because he was such an amazing mid-carder, which is absolutely a compliment, I think the reason WWF beat WCW is because of the depth in the roster and he was definitely an upper mid-carder. I loved his Shane McMahon match and the Hardcore title win.
Such an underrated performer, I heard he got sick before his wwf call up
Pretty cool guy, he used to frequently come to the deli i worked at back in PA. I think he owned a gym in the area somewhere.
When Chuck Norris goes to bed, he checks under his bed for Steve Blackman
Thanks for this video. Blackman was one of my favorites back in the day.
Loved Blackman for all the reasons you highlighted. Silent killer, no nonsense and an all round good guy. Not forgetting to mention insanely talented in the ring. Loved watching him in the hardcore division aswell- a definite nod of approval from me. Great video.
I love how much knowledge the wrestling bios presenter has.
My friend across the water
Drew Nelson.
Edinburgh Scotland.
Steve Blackman is from the next town over from where I live. I never actually met him but I have a friend who goes to the same gym as him and talks to him on a daily basis.
Awesome video! Steve Blackman was great back in the attitude era. You do wrestling a wonderful service telling these stories.
good to hear a story of a wrestler actually making a career after wrestling...so many tragic story so thanks for this one!
I wish you would’ve mentioned his finisher, top rope kick to the sternum.
I remember the first time I seen it, I nearly jumped through the ceiling. This had to qualify him as a serious contender moving forward.
I always thought of him as a poor man's Ken Shamrock but I now have a new respect for the guy
I always rooted for him back in the day. Ttremendous respect for him after watching this
Man looked like a real life Tekken character with that squead
(Square - Head)
Shamrock vs Blackman was such a massive moral dilemma for my 11 year old mind, pitting my two all time favorite wrestlers against one another. But that lions den match was epic
Cold as Ice!
Great video like always. You always do videos of someone no one else thinks to do a video of. Each one is very informative and brings up things i forgotten or genuinely didnt know. Great research and amazing presentation.
Ahhh himself and dlo were my 2 favourites back then. I just liked to cheer the underdogs n mid cards dunno why tho. Great vid I've been recommending your channel to my friends who used to watch back in the day. Great work. Try not to over do it with work. Your videos are worth the wait. Dont burn out. Stay safe
These are great I haven't missed one since I subscribed
The closest thing WWE ever got to having Street Fighters Ryu on the roster =P
Legit Hardman! When his them played you knew it got serious.
You always come up withe these underrated wrestlers. Thank you.
one of the coolest wrestlers of all time and i would have loved more of Shamrock vs Blackman
Grossly underrated worker! Glad you're showing him some love.
His look was taken from the movie The Perfect Weapon. I remember my cousin telling me he was the real deal.
This is a awesome bio thanks man for posting this as I now know more about a highly underrated and legit badass dude
Used to love this guy! A man's man!
Vince about the karate pants:
"But nobody's going to see your package?"
Superb content as always. Big john studd must be up soon!
He was underappreciated. Great video!
