  • 5 months to the day after I crashed a motorcycle in Mexico, I am back riding my Yamaha Tenere 700 adventure bike. I am recuperating from broken bones and wounds in my leg and arm. I am not yet ready for an extended ride, but I have time to reflect on how I could have avoided the accident, and what I will do differently when I resume adventure traveling.

Glad to see you back I'm 65 and I just refuse to install a phone mount or camera. That stuff goes in my top case. You don't need distractions on a motorcycle. I just ride locally and no long distance rides.

@@samhill3496 I’m 70 and owned a big adventure bike, just came back from a five weeks adventure ride…loved it!….. I have two cameras, phone and ride with the music on……couldn’t have it any other way…..but hey, like driving, riding a bike requires concentration….so concentrate on your riding first and foremost…..it lessens the risk of accidents……common sense really.

I'm in my late 70s, but don't want to stop riding motorcycles, not yet anyway. But my kids didn't think I should ride two wheels anymore, so I switched to four (ATV) wheels instead. A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do for the joy of riding a motorcycle.

A other 70 year old. Just returned to riding after a 15year hiatus. BMW GS310 fit the bill for me, light weight and just enough power for my riding. The Adirondack back roads are enjoyable on two wheels again. Safe Travels to All!

Hay Brother ! I too am 70 yrs old and I had a RX4 you may remember me from previous comments.... I sold my RX4 because of it's weight ( I called her Miss Piggy!)
and I got a 2001 XR650L and I am super happy with it ! it is over 100lbs lighter than the RX4 was... but extremally tall at 37" seat height... I lowered it to where I can touch flat footed with my 30" inseam and am super happy with the bike... I can even get a wheelie out of it by throttle alone if I hold my mouth right.... I added a back rack and side guards for the rear and a Harbor freight waterproof box to the back rack. and that works great !
I recommend the XR650L if your thinking of getting rid of the heavy Tenray 700...
it will take a while to get it set up for adventure riding but the cost is just a few hundred bucks
and well worth it. I currently put a 13T sprocket on the front and can still hit 70mph on the road if I want but I wanted the front to be Light so I can go over logs ! i can cruise at 55 to 60 all day long like this and that is fine for me or I can add the 15T sprocket and cruse at 75mph all day..... it's to each their own ya know...
this lighter bike has a larger gas tank (one of the major failure points of the XR650L)
and I have no issues of the small gas tank. I suggest you find a used XR650L and fix it up for YOU..... and then come see me in Weed Ca. LOL just sell the 700 for as much as you can get and that will leave you with plenty to buy a new XR650L and the goodies to set it up and have cash left over ! it's really a no brainer !

Nice to see you back! I took a spill the other day due to rushing to get home. Rear tire caught some of those oak tree spinners that had mud under them. Totally missed seeing them because I was looking at traffic coming and had small window and rushed through. Bike landed on leg just above ankle and even though I had adventure boots on man I have some deep tissue bruising and went to get x-rays a few hours later to make sure I didn't have a fracture. Thinking about buying some motocross boots for street riding. I need a little more lower leg protection.

Glad you’re back in the saddle, Bruce. You continue to inspire and remind us all that you’re only as old as you allow yourself to be. I know this sounds crazy, but I’d encourage you to test ride a 1200GS. The boxer engine, coupled with shaft drive makes for a bike with very low CG, and really feels lite and easy to ride. And with those cylinder heads sticking out as they do, she’s easy to pick up in the event of a drop.Kind regards, AD

The GS is a flagship bike, but I don't ride long distances on pavement. As I almost always ride alone, I would not be too confident if I had to pick it up in an awkward position off on an isolated dirt road.

So glad you're well enough to ride again. I'm looking forward to your research into a lighter bike. I'm on an Africa Twin, and the T7 is 50 pounds lighter, but it's hard to lose a lot more weight and retain the road riding ability along with the off-road capability. I'm doing a solo ride in the US this summer (I'm from Canada), and I will definitely have good insurance. But I agree that a solo ride in other countries is probably not for me.

I am coming back to the valley in June and will be there until Nov. Going to fish for steelhead and ride a bunch. It is too damned hot this time of the year in Thailand. Great to see you riding again. Bad luck combination basically. You prioritized grabbing your phone over holding your bike which was likely instinctive. I've experienced a bit of that at some point. I think it's a dicipline scenero; meaning let the phone go and keep holding on, at the same time no knowledge of the rut in the road. Easy to say don't grab the phone but that was the reality I guess. Basically riding diciplin. EDIT: I wear leather pants with some armor, Garne Fastback endoro boots, helite turtle II vest, full gauntlet gloves. Good luck and ride safe as you always have.

From what I've heard, T7's are hard to come by in the States so should be no problem selling and getting your price. I'm 73 and have the CB500X and while it is definitely a good bike, I long for something a tad bigger with a bit more go, eg. Triumph Tiger 900GT. However I'm not so sure that it would be a good decision because although I am capable now of handling it, at my age who knows how I'll be in the years ahead. Good to see you're still going to keep riding. Good luck with your choice.

Yippee ki yay you're back! I'm near your age and ride almost every day. Just got off my DL1000, and it's tall and heavy, but I love it. I also have a fjr1300, which is even more heavy, but it's lower to the ground . I've evolved from a Harley Fatboy to Japanese engineering and will never go back. Is it possible to get a more fun, exciting, and reliable motorcycle than a Yamaha , Suzuki, Honda, or Kawasaki ? As I am a senior, and I demand reliability . I often contemplate a less heavy adventure motorcycle, and then I realize that if I pay attention to where and how I ride , I don't need a smaller motorcycle, Yeah! For me, half the fun is twisting the throttle and feeling the power. Power on neighbor and hope to see you on your Yamaha someday.

My husband had a accident back 7 yrs ago. He has rides bikes all he's life he is 67 yrs old now. But he's streght and balance is not like it used to be. But he has now got himself a ryker can am. 900cc the 1 he got is equipped to go off road, like dirt roads back road and highway. He likes it alot. But you might look into those. It's got tge 2 wheels up front and 1 rear wheel. But check them out.

I have a T7 as well and for all the same reasons you are thinking about selling, I am as well. I've done a lot of research and it has come down to one bike that I would consider and that's the KTM 390 Adventure. The Honda CBX500 is to close to the weight of the T7 and weight for me is the issue. I carry a jack made for lifting motorcycles. The 390 is a lot of bike for the money. I did have a Honda CRF250L but it lacked power and I was blown all over the road on windy days. I do love the T7. Good luck.

Same thoughts as mine. The KTM looks mighty nice and it will likely be on my short list too.

@@MySeniorMoments The new 2023 has spoked wheels. For me, I like spoked wheels only. More visual than anything.

The Kawasaki Versys 300x, it does sit up pritty high with the top heavyness that goes with it, otherwise a very manageable fun riding bike. I'm 52 and this was my fist bike, i bought it in july of 2022.

I have a brand new T 700. It's nice to have a bike where you can put your feet flat and have a fuel tank lower than the steering head. That said a Honda Transalp is coming home and a R1200 Nine T Urban GS. Lot of miles on a similar machine. RTW capable.
