The Tenere ticks a lot of boxes, but the even simpler, tough as nails, air cooled DR650 is a better bet for Africa. It bugs me that we can't buy new DR's here in Europe due to pesky E.E.C emissions laws. The crazy thing is, I get stuck behind poorly maintained or worn out diesel trucks & buses every day, that push out more pollution in an hour than a DR would in a hundred years.
All the bells are whistles are shinny, and shiny tends to get our attention, but what's not there can't break and cause grief. The HP wars, reminds me of the megapixel wars when digital cameras were first a thing. It's an easy marketing point but not as important as they make it out to be. The T7 could really be were the DR650 is today in 20 years. The solid reliable bulletproof bike that won't kill your wallet.
Bret, I attended your 230PM talk on Saturday. We were both wearing the same shirt! haha I was dazzled that you had your GS in the Adventure Out! booth. It's the real star of the show! ;) I carry dehydrated food with me whenever I'm camping. Its bulky but not heavy and its great to have a hot meal in camp. Mountain House Breakfast Skillet + instant coffee = bush heaven!
I went to the show last Saturday and saw your seminar for packing as well as your second seminar. So much great information. At 6:34 in the video is me taking the picture of my friend Ken with Brett.
Hey Brett, could you do a really specific video on the clothes one should take for adv rides, may be for a month long tour !? I mean the quick dry tshirts, liners, semi formal/casual clothes for formal scenarios, the shoes or slippers !? Also, the riding gear and what do you wear underneath !? The A to Z of complete clothes and riding gear, how do you plan to wear them and wash them, going from less than 10 degrees to upwards of 35 degress (celsius) in one trip !
I do a ton of riding in Asia (tropical, very wet, and sometimes cold). My base layer is compression shirt, socks, and pants (all full length). I like how light they are and how they slip under my gear and don't chafe. Also, they are drip dry so when I arrive, I just wear them in the show and hang them overnight. Super light, cheap, and I only need to bring 2 pairs.
Adding to it, could you show us the packing bags you use in more detail? I mean the hole assortment you use for packing clothes, camping items, tools, etc. and what is important when deciding which to buy, from size to materials.
@@nathanboeger9329 thank you for your info. I have searched the entirety of UA-cam for those suggestions type of videos but none of them are specific. "you don't have to worry about antenna failure" - that certainly resonated with me. My key antenna failed and left me stranded a few states from home on my Tiger 1200. Might be trading it straight across on the tenere 700.
I'm one of the first ones to get the Tenere 700 in Australia all my precious bikes have been dirt bikes eg YZ250 Crf450x 300exc the tenere dose not not feel big to me and has more than enough suspension and even more power than what you need on dirt
I am a hard core dirt biker, but the Yamaha peaks my interest immensely ! I like the simplicity and like you said “ not damaged with a small crash or tip-over “ and of course the price point ! Thanks for the great review.
@@protectork9831 exactly, 10.000€ for a bike like this ? Great suspensions, great engine but absolutely no electronics and very very cheap plastics, switches etc...
DR650 may be ancient but at half the price of the Tenere it is twice the value. The DR650 outshines the Tenere on most of it's "redeeming qualities". 1. Simple electronics on the Tenere - The DR has even fewer 2. Steal frame to be welded - The DR also has a steal frame that is more accessible 3. Lack of damage prone areas on the Tenere - DR has even fewer damage prone areas 4. 9.5 inches of ground clearance on the Tenere - DR has 10.5 5. Inverted Forks on the Tenere - Unless I am on a race bike on the track, i'd rather forks that don't need immediate attention once i get a leaky seal. Inverted forks will leak oil all over your rotors and tire. DR is also lighter. i will admit an 18" rear on the tenere outshines the DR's 17" Ultimately, the Tenere is going to be a better handling and more powerful bike. Is that worth twice the price though?
Great video! Thx! Currently on a 990 and the Tenere is appealing to me for the reasons you mentioned. 790 makes me nervous with all the tech on board when traveling long distance far from a ktm dealer. I doubt I'll ever get rid of the 990 but when it is time to retire it from full-adventure riding duties I will be looking for something more along the lines of the Tenere. Hopefully by that time, some other companies will also be entering that category.
It is the engine of the MT-07 a little modified, but it has 75hp, 68Nm max, 204 kg with full fuel tank. What you have to be aware is that despite it is written "tubeless" on the Pirelli it comes with chambers...I have tried it on road, it is fun to ride despite the small engine (I have a 2015 GSA) but couldn't try it off road. But I can't wait to see if the new Husqvarna concept bike is coming on production: Norden 901 it has the engine of the Duke 890, it could be a revival of the 990 adventure....
As a dirt bike rider with a plated WR 450 in Colorado, I look forward to trying out the Tenere 700. We saw it at the Denver International Motorcycle show and I was impressed with the simplicity and pricing of it. I look forward to you getting your hands on one and reviewing it.

Hey Bret, I just did a comparative test T7/790S/850 GS Adv and I can tell you that during those 3 days on on & off road, T7 behaved quite well, the best in highway the most planted (speeds in excess of 170-190 km/h), very planted on twisties, but because of the very stiff suspension it was a bit jumpy, you could feel that much more in off road (compression and rebound both very stiff) but I have a 950 Adventure and I'm used to that :)) seat was comfortable for those 200+ km range that the 15 litres tank gives you. Consumption at around 5,5-6 liters for 100 km. To me it felt like a lightweight 950 Adventure and you don't feel the lack of power, those 70hp are more that enough, the engine is super-smooth compared to the 790 S & 850 GS. Overall a good bike but the 790 Adventure impressed me in all departments, on road - on rails, off road confidence inspiring and very able. The 850 GS was a heavy sofa on wheels :( I hope this helped a bit :) Cheers!
I had the 3 Tenere's before this model and can't wait to get this one. It is reliable, if something goes wrong it is easy to fix, for an adventure bike it is light, engine power is more then enough, it is off road capable - what's there not to like ? :)
You poor US guys... I've actually tried the Ténéré 700, had one for 24h while my SuperTen was on the mechanic. Only ridden it on road, and my off-road experience is very limited (not to say nearly null), so keep these two things in mind. My final conclusion, after ridding it, was simple - if i could afford to have a 2nd bike, THAT would be the one. It's quite lightweight, it moves around very well. I'm used to the SuperTen 1200cc torque, so for me the 700 lacked a bit, but nothing critical and that you won't get used to it. It rev's higher than the SuperTen (as expected), and it lacks no power - actually, on a steep climb on a highway (yes, we have those in Portugal), i tried to twist the throtle in 6th gear, starting at 70km/h (a little under 50mph) to see how it behaved, and it reached 140km/h (about 95mph) in less than notime. I'd change three things if i purchased one: the seat (the original is quite stiff, not the sofa-like i'm used to on the SuperTen); add chashbars (they're small, so the weight won't go up much); and the licence plate holder (it goes waaaay too far back). Other than than, i really loved ridding it, and i'd love to try one offroad.
Hey Bret, it’s so good watching and learning from your channel whilst being here across the pond in England. Every episode brings new ideas, new techniques and inspiration to not only how I set up my bike, but the way in which I travel too. If you ever get chance I’d like any feedback you might have on my very own, and very new UA-cam channel I just started, especially as I plan on filming my next big trip to Kazakhstan in 2020. Keep up the good work, it’s so valuable to us out here.
Hello Bret. Love following you (and Ryan (F9)). Your channel are the best made and informative ones. You are a very good pair of entertainers. I wish I could go to this event and meet you in person. You did mention t the beginning that you are doing 5 shows like this but have you ever thought of participating in Montreal's Bike Show (Salon de la moto) ? My friends Sylvain Gallea and Court Rand of Ecuador Freedom Bike Rental did last year and saw their business from our part of the world increase a bit. Say hello to them for me please, their booth must not be far from yours. Thanks again and keep on riding, teaching, entertaining !!!
what do you think about those two pipes on the right side engine? im guessing coolant lines coming from a pump? Having the "lip" facing forward scares me. Also that type of oring connection has always leaked on me at one point or another on anything that vibrates...
Nice video ! When camping in the summer or warm area, you should look at hammocks. Pack tiny and easy/fast to set up. A couple months ago i went for 3 days in UT camping in the mountain riding my drz 400s and it was a blast. I wish i could do that for a living :-)
Hey, if you don't mind, I have a couple questions for you about packing for motocamping. Myself and a couple buddies are going to go all the way down Pacfic Coast Highway, then up through the Sierra Nevada Mountains and through Yosemite. I will be on a Ninja 650. My first question is: how do you pack light enough to travel, but carry enough for coastal/desert/mountain/forest conditions?
I see you rode with soft panniers, are they better than hard panniers for an Africa trip? I'm planning a SADC ride in a few and gauging which is my best option but also leaning on the experience of folks like u
Couldn't agree more about the dehydrated food! I've survived on burning sausages over fire, than watch dried up grains soak water back. Bret Almost 50 ! with energy of 30s. We need your food chart. :)
Good informative video but what you think about the 16 ltr tank? I have a 23ltr tank on my XT660Z and was on my tours through the desert very pleased with it. I think an ADVENTURE bike have to have a larger tank than 16ltr!
Ouch, I've never seen inflatable mat which could be 3" and packed so tightly. Typical Thermarest (and copies) is much bigger and/or thinner :-( What modes is it?
I don’t know how to sleep on the ground. Hammock hammock. I bring a tent for emergencies, but it’s nightmare each time. Just can’t sleep flat anymore. I even sleep in a hammock at home.
Like a lot of bikes, those indicators look like they will bust up in a fall over. Needs tough flexi LED. There is body work, so possible damage. My ancient DR650 has none and I've fitted flexi LED blinkers. Not concerned about damage if I ever drop my DR. Still, I'd like a Tenere 700 anyway. As well as my DR that is....
You didn't say anything about the Honda XR650L I have had mine for six years and put over 24,000 miles on it. I recently returned to the U.S. after riding it over 3,000 miles through Mexico. It's a great bike!!!
That new Ténéré looks great, but the incandescent turn signals look out of place. LEDs would allow a little extra power for things like heated grips. I hope this is the start of a new trend for lighter weight ADV bikes.
Bret, what was the bad news? It looks like you liked it?? And BTW, I got to start up that specific bike a few weeks ago in Georgia at the Yamaha HQ while they were swapping out the euro lights to DOT😏 It sounds awesome!
@Bret you should really check out SWM Superdual. Cheaper, smaller and lighter than T700 (thumper!) most importantly available right now. You are welcome to try mine except that it is stored for winter in Kazakhstan; I'll be back there next spring to continue travels.
I feel like its not enough bike for the $10k asking price. Its essentially a FZ07 on offroad suspension, but not sure that justifies the $2.5k additional cost.
I paid 7k CAD$ for my 2016 FZ07 and put down a reservation for a 2021 T7 at 12k CAD$. I dont feel like the T7 is worth 5k over the FZ07, but that price difference is because the FZ07 was really cheaper than it should have been! Having seen the european specced T7, I do think its worth the 12k preorder price. At 13.5k after launch, it gets closer to the base 790 and it is not such a clear decision anymore.
maybe you should turn a fz07 into an offroad capable bike and tell us how much money you spend. But has to have adjustable suspension, which the FZ07 doesn't have, the fairing, the tank, the 21/18 wheels, the skidplate, the inforced frame for offroad riding etc.
@@Racer57 Really? Talking to you is useless. You don't get it anyway. Buy a FZ07 and put some off road suspension on it and then you have mrsnowrocks Tenere 700.
Nice display review of the T7 with good spots on adv upsides. Look fwd to follow Your Africa adventure, let is know how your packing will do it for You.
what? Bret Tkacs at the quebec city bike show in february!!1 ;) would be awesome :P. if not you should have a ride here, i am doing a big adventure on the east side of canada next summer. its gonna be my first big trip on a bike and i can't wait for it . ty for the nice video. you are the #1 for motorcycle content.. fortnine come in 2nd .. Just talked to a local dealer and he has 2 deposits and mine should be the 3rd . Can't wait to park next to the DR650 , wait I mean I can't wait to ride it ofcourse . Is this show coming to Northern California ? Would definitely go if it's close enough to home .
Thanks, Bogdan! That's all great info.
Hi Bret. What is your boot dryer?
I had the 3 Tenere's before this model and can't wait to get this one. It is reliable, if something goes wrong it is easy to fix, for an adventure bike it is light, engine power is more then enough, it is off road capable - what's there not to like ? :)
The one thing that will break on the Tenere when falling over is the shifter linkage. Might be a good idea to carry a spare
Thanks for the tip.
Good show. Encore!
Great entrance to the show. Like your style.
Thanks, Mike.
Will be at Chicago IMS working with the BDR group. I think you are going to be there too. Look forward to meeting you.
Thanks for the info, Mike!
I should of added, any feedback you might have on my filming or communications to the viewers would be great. But don’t worry if not
Saw the Tenere at the Brussels Auto Show a few days ago. Man oh man, what a gorgeous motorcycle and so cheap.
Much respect from everyone here at Vikingbags!
How are the bikes ergonomics? Do you like it's ergonomics? Seating position, foot peg etc.
what do you think about those two pipes on the right side engine? im guessing coolant lines coming from a pump? Having the "lip" facing forward scares me. Also that type of oring connection has always leaked on me at one point or another on anything that vibrates...
I've already put my hands on it...its a great bike.
We're jealous, Marco!
Yo bret. Your tent look small in size.. any specific link that i can refer to??
Hi Brett I rode the T700 in the summer. You will love it. Rode the 2020 AT last week. That's a great bike too. Different markets though.
My test ride on the AT. No off road I'm afraid. ua-cam.com/video/DP5JH5PFg5I/v-deo.html
Thanks for the feedback, GB.
Damn I'm so bummed I missed your seminar. I really appreciate all your videos and have learned so much from you.
Great vlog what dates and show locations you have coming up
Bret's event calendar is at brettkacs.com, Rodney.
I really look forward to your review of this bike, and indeed the comparison of this Ténéré 700 and 790 Adv.
Theres no such thing as enough powaaah 😁
Bret, what sleeping bag is in the video? Thanks!
I see you rode with soft panniers, are they better than hard panniers for an Africa trip? I'm planning a SADC ride in a few and gauging which is my best option but also leaning on the experience of folks like u
Supposedly itinerary will be available in Cali June 2020 Hope to be there the first day it’s out and ride home with it
Please give us a complete list of the gear you packed!
Couldn't agree more about the dehydrated food!
I've survived on burning sausages over fire, than watch dried up grains soak water back.
Bret Almost 50 ! with energy of 30s. We need your food chart. :)
Will you have some thoughts to convey on the Norden 901 adventure bike which is now going into production?
Good informative video but what you think about the 16 ltr tank? I have a 23ltr tank on my XT660Z and was on my tours through the desert very pleased with it. I think an ADVENTURE bike have to have a larger tank than 16ltr!
Ouch, I've never seen inflatable mat which could be 3" and packed so tightly. Typical Thermarest (and copies) is much bigger and/or thinner :-(
What modes is it?
EXPED
Jon Moran ...usually Exped don’t come in Thermarest bags 03:13
I wish he would post links to his camping gear.
I don’t know how to sleep on the ground. Hammock hammock. I bring a tent for emergencies, but it’s nightmare each time. Just can’t sleep flat anymore. I even sleep in a hammock at home.
@@ronanrogers4127 Too bad - they're a superior product
I can’t wait to hear your real world impression of the T7! I agree with your thoughts on where it’s pointed in the market!
Some excellent tips on packing. I just love your comments about the food.
CONGRATS Bret!!!!! thanks !!! great video
I liked your video like packing and what to take on the bike ride.
Thanks!
You didn't say anything about the Honda XR650L I have had mine for
six years and put over 24,000 miles on it. I recently returned to the
U.S. after riding it over 3,000 miles through Mexico. It's a great bike!!!
Hi Bret, I’ve only just discovered your excellent channel. Just wondering if you’ve ever been (here) to Australia?
Hi, Bret! What's your jacket at the fairs facility ride? Thx
I notice that the subframe is welded. How important is it to have a bolted subframe on an adventure bike?
What convertible pants are those? I have the Columbia's and the Columbia's are too baggy.
That new Ténéré looks great, but the incandescent turn signals look out of place. LEDs would allow a little extra power for things like heated grips. I hope this is the start of a new trend for lighter weight ADV bikes.
OK i am confused, I see him constantly dismount on the high side(right side) of the Bike. Why? Why not the low side, ( left side)
Bret, what was the bad news? It looks like you liked it?? And BTW, I got to start up that specific bike a few weeks ago in Georgia at the Yamaha HQ while they were swapping out the euro lights to DOT😏 It sounds awesome!
Hi, Glen. The bad news was that we couldn't ride it :(
Hello!
Big fan of your channel and lessons. Are you coming to the Motorcycle Show in Chicago?
Safe travels!
@Bret you should really check out SWM Superdual. Cheaper, smaller and lighter than T700 (thumper!) most importantly available right now.
You are welcome to try mine except that it is stored for winter in Kazakhstan; I'll be back there next spring to continue travels.
Does the 700 have cruise control? I've been looking at the Super Tenere and it has cruise.
Enjoyed the talk and the review. Be safe
Oh nice, the middle part of the front fender seems to be bolted on so easy high fender conversion?
Don't buy one. 95% of us think it is a steal at that price.
maybe you should turn a fz07 into an offroad capable bike and tell us how much money you spend. But has to have adjustable suspension, which the FZ07 doesn't have, the fairing, the tank, the 21/18 wheels, the skidplate, the inforced frame for offroad riding etc.
@@legghorn Its cheaper to build them in bulk then it is to build a one off model.
@@Racer57 Really? Talking to you is useless. You don't get it anyway. Buy a FZ07 and put some off road suspension on it and then you have mrsnowrocks Tenere 700.
great video. Which other cities are you going to be visiting with this show
Nice display review of the T7 with good spots on adv upsides. Look fwd to follow Your Africa adventure, let is know how your packing will do it for You.
The other bike I’m interested in hearing your opinion about is the new KTM 390 Adventure.
Oh btw. you didn't talk about the new vstrom 1050, the panamerica or the new africa twin. can't wait for those video.
Top stuff, when are you coming to the UK? It would be smashing to see you at a show here .
Yamaha should have a Tenere with 31 inch seat height too. Older hips don't like the climb up on the stock over 34 inch seat height.
What’s the brand of the flash light weight backpack?
More info about the compact sleeping bag, please? I read every single comment, but I didn't see if someone else also asked this.
Mototrek if you want to see a good review on the T-7 then “MAD-TV Yamaha Tenere 700 first impressions” from Australia has just done a pearler, you’d probably appreciate it more than most.
Cheers mate.
Any good road bias tires in these sizes? I’m 90% road.
Are you going to be in the motorcycle show in Dallas?
Brett always good videos tips. I wish i had visit this show - unfortunately Brazil is far far way... let see videos! Congrats
Bery useful channel from a very usefull person
What stove do you use? Canister or multifuel?
