You made a great choice! Your reasoning for changing from a larger ADV bike to a smaller one is spot on. I downsized to a Z400 due to age and strength. I find going on the back country roads are so much better then the freeway. When I get to my destination, I am relaxed and discovered little towns with character. Small bikes are not beginner bikes, they are fun. I have had mine for 3 years and I still have a smile on my face. Congratulations on your new bike and I hope you have many wonderful adventures on it. Cheers.
YAY! Me too-I went from an Africa Twin to a 390, LOVE IT. Since you aren't too concerned with blasting down the highway, you may consider a very popular mod; going to a 14t on the front. That will give more grunt in 1st gear yet barely noticeable at highway speeds. Oh also some Doubletake mirrors :) Have fun!
Great bike. You will enjoy it a lot. I, myself, downsized from a heavy 550Lb BMW R1150 to a new KLR 650. 100# lighter and the ability to wander off on unpaved roads is a blessing. Though I also enjoy taking my wife 2022 RE Himalayan. I am not excluding the idea of downsizing to a 400cc class in the next 5 years. Keep up the video coming.
Wow ! That is a good deal, if you were to deduct all the taxes and fees, the price of the bike itself would be around $6000, thats about what most people are asking for a used one. Congratulations 🎉
I just started watching your channel and really enjoy and relate to the journey of discovery you are on. Aging has a way of grounding us in what is real when it comes to our physical and spiritual needs, and that sure does change our riding for the better.
Congrats on your new bike. This spring I bought the Norden 901 Expedition. I've got just over a 1,000 miles on it now. I pinch myself every day, every mile. While a bigger bike, I'm 6', 1" (6', 3" in my boots). I run a saw mill and a frontend loader wrestling logs and boulders just about every week. My feet are flat on the ground sitting on the bike. Weight seems fine so far.
I just bought my 390 Adventure a few weeks ago and love it. It is very stable and confidence inspiring, plus it looks awesome. I think you'll enjoy it very much especially where you're riding.
Nice bike. I've done the same sort of downsizing since getting into my 70's. Got a Versys 300X now, but I stay on the pavement for the most part. I would encourage you to get some knobbies on that thing if you're going to spend much time on gravel/dirt roads. I had my front end nearly wash out on a well maintained gravel road just going around a gentle curve at an easy pace. I ride with Shinko 705's for the occasional short stint on gravel, but no longer tempt fate on dirt roads.
The 390 Adv was born from the 390 Duke a street bike. The foor pegs are tilted forward so if you want to stand comfortably you will want to replace them with aftermarket ones along with the handlebar risers.
Awesome! Im at 3k miles with my 390 and love it. Big kudos to BlackDog Cycle foot pegs and heavy duty skid plate. I swapped out stock windshield for the MadStad windshield, can adjust lower for offroad, really great wind buffeting for longer rides. ADVMatt has great info on suspension, im 6' tall 215lbs and I jacked preload to about 80% front and back and it made a great ride even better, especially offroad. Happy trails!
Yes don’t forget to trash those slanted foot pegs that just want to throw you over the bars every time you stand up. Happy you listened to the many folks who suggested this bike as a T7 replacement/supplement 🍻🍻 Enjoy

Glad you're happy with your new 390. I can tell from your voice how it's boosted your confidence, which is great. Look forward to future videos of your adventures on the 390. Ride safe, Pete UK.👍🏼
Great review - I'm thinking of getting the same motorcycle! I'm a Senior rider down-sizing from a Kawasaki Versys 650. As you are well aware, as we get older as Seniors, it becomes physically challenging to ride tall and heavy motorcycles on rough terrain
Good choice. I should show you some of my favorite routes not too far from you from when I lived in that area. So many logging roads to explore on that little beast.
Great choice! Happy to see you took the plunge. In addition to the handlebar risers I’d recommend the BlackDog foot pegs (larger platform, 1/2” lower overall, LEVELS the angle which is a big deal when standing), and consider the slightly taller 1-piece enduro seat from KTM (allows you to slide back and forth to adjust the effective seat height without having to “scoot up” on the pillion seat. I’ve got one you can try on your bike next time you’re up in Bend. I added a Givi windscreen device that clips on and diverts just enough air to eliminate buffering around the helmet. I’m 5’9” (also enjoying my “Senior Moments”) but my inseam is 32”.
Congratulations ! I picked up a KLX300 in April for my 74th Birthday , had been riding a 500+ pound 100+ hp butt kicker since 2009 , I find the lower hp , weight and nimbleness of the Bike to be an absolutely charming new experience , 35" seat height and me being 5'6" a bit of a challenge at first but have adapted well , Bike makes me giggle and yes , it is constantly calling "C'mon ! Let's go somewhere !"
Hey, I just did they same thing. I own a T7 and bought a 390 yesterday. I now have to sell the T7. I haven't picked up the KTM yet, but can't wait to get started. Everything you talk about with the T7 is exactly what I go through and the bike will be missed. I bought the BMW g310gs, loved the bike but it was too small for my 80 round trip to work and back on highway and interstate. I did buy the bar risers with bushings to cut down on the numb fingers and helped with standing
Congratulations on the new bike. I agree it is smart to know when to downsize. If I had any dirt roads anywhere near me I’d already have an ADV bike and at my age it would be a small ADV.
The best mod to date on the 390 is Fuel X lite. No more jerky throttle under 4000 rpm’s, nice and smooth and less clutch feathering while crawling. Still get that rush of power at 6300 rpm’s.
@@MySeniorMoments All it does is richen fuel throttle body from the factory lean setting that the manufacturers need to pass emissions. The “Lite” is a no fuss no muss. Install it and it learns the best setting while you ride. The “Pro” has the option of changing the settings, which can be a hassle to find the right setting. I have the Pro on my KLX and it took a month to find the best setting. They give to the setting on what mods you’ve done, but it only made it worse
I have a FuelX Lite on mine as well and I enjoy it. Bike did not want to tractor at all before I put it on there. Now I can lug it a little and clutch control is a bit easier for me.
Great choice! I am 50, 32" inseam, and very strong for my age (I am a personal trainer), and even then I decided to downsize from my 2018 Honda Africa Twin Adventure Sports DCT. I actually don't struggle to pick it up that much ( (at least on flat ground) but I just never feel totally confident on it, especially off pavement. Even as strong as I am once it starts to go ... there is no stopping it. Your expression nailed it. It didn't call me from the garage because of that little bit of nervousness.
I replaced the 15T front sprocket with a 14T, and I like it much better. Makes offroad so much better, and it doesn't cause any drawbacks on the street. You'll run out of power before you run out of RPM.
Congratulations on the new bike👍. I have done the same. I have a Triumph tiger 1050 which is perfect for trips on tarmac, and can also (like all other motorbikes) be used on gravel roads. But feeling in control with the ktm on gravel roads is a completely different league. Unfortunately, the summer here in Norway has been very rainy, so the irony is that I have never ridden so little in a summer, even though I now have 2 bikes.🤣
Congratulations, brother. I'm writing this during my moto camping adventure as well and I'm thinking about getting KTM890R adventure. I love my Street Glide but I want to explore off-road camping. Anyway, cheers and be safe.
Congratulations on your KTM! I’m sure you’ll have lots of fun with it. I have a ‘22 KTM 1290 Súper Duke R EVO and just got back from a ride this morning. My ADV bike is a ‘22 Honda CB500X and that was a very good choice for me too. My cruiser is a ‘06 Victory Kingpin. I’m rooting for you to bring us lots of videos of camping in the great Oregon Outback and other places of interest. I’m in Sacramento, California.
Congrats on your new bike. It's a nice one. I got it myself. I've ridden the T7 briefly and previously owned the Honda CRF300L. On dirt roads the you'll be churned a lot more than what you're used to. The T7 and the CRF are a lot better there imo. Both, the CRF and the 390Adv have very little vibrations. I think it will depend on the amount of off-road riding if you'll be happy with it. The more off-road, the better the CRF. The CRF isn't really taller than the 390Adv...only on paper. On tarmac the 390Adv is the nicer one, but the CRF can do that too. Just not quite as fast and comfortable. Tensioning the chain on the 390Adv is a tricky one I figured. Strangely enough it tensions when the bike is loaded. That means you have to leave a buffer when it's unloaded on a stand...very odd and difficult to manage...I wasn't able doing it by myself. It was a time consuming exercise. Doing it by the manual didn't work. Is there anyone else having this problem?
Great choice! I agree with the other comments re bar risers etc. Will also add good tires make a gret difference. Yesterday I traded my 2020 390 for a brand new wire wheel model.
In your table you stated Honda 300L Rally has tubeless wheels. It does have have tubes. Your KTM is great choice. I consider it as another bike to my Rally. More suitable for riding on tarmacs. Thank you.
Thanks for your option I’m much like You I’m 76 looking 😮to down size from my BMW 1200 GS . You confirmed what the KTM dealer was telling me the 390 was just to small and lacking preforance for me . I’m not sure where to go I need tobe able to road ride some to get area that to ride dirt. And most BDR required some road riding . Good luck keep us posted.
I downsized from a R1200GS to a KTM 890 adventure. It is a night and day difference from the BMW. It handles exceptionally well and is confidence inspiring. You also don’t notice the weight like on the BMW while riding or pushing around in the garage.
I am super glad you got a smaller bike the T7 was too heavy for an old man to ride ! I know I'm and old man too ! the issue I think you'll notice the most with the bike is the power after the Monster power of the T7 it's going to feel lack luster at best.... But give it a chance and after break-in just give it more throttle than your used to giving a bike... I noticed that on my XR650L.... you have to give it alot more throttle than I am used to... if you do that you will quickly be impressed with the power of the smaller bike ! I know that sounds kind'a stupid like DUH you gott'a give it more throttle because it is a smaller bike ! but seriously I think the throttle's are more placid now than the old days back in the Honda 350cc days a twist of the wrist gave you full throttle but now that is only about half way on the throttle my XR650L is that way the throttle is very slow ! and I suspect the KTM 390 is the same way. this is actually a good thing.... on rocky roads your not likely to throttle up when you don't want to, because of a bump ! and with a torquey bike that can get you into trouble ! Hang in there neighbor ! and ride safe !
i am 55 and currently nursing a broke ankle , riding a husky 901 that i am hoping i can continue to ride for years to come but my next bike will be the 390adv or something similar , i strongly considered going with a 390 or building a 690/701 into an adv bike prior to buying the 901... the 390 likes to rev from what ive gathered ! i was actually quite surprised about the vibration on the T7 i figured it would be less viby and smoother than my 901 but it was the opposite my 901 is alot smoother although i am running anti vibe bar inserts among many other mods so stock to stock who knows
I did the exact same, due to a neck injury my 2020 Tenere 700, which I loved, was a constant worry as I knew I'd be in trouble if I dropped it and had to lift it. After trying carrying a winch and all sorts of insanity, I was finally honest with myself, and 'downgraded' to the crazy 390. What a brilliant bike it has proven to be. Enjoy the bike!
@@MySeniorMoments same. I ride alone. I rarely go anywhere extremeish and very rarely actually drop a bike, but it was in the back of my mind all the time with the T7. Enjoy every mile.
I’m pretty sure the 390 also has the integrated software for the Tft screen to control heated grips and seat. Very highly recommended along with Mosko Moto extotherm heated jacket. Really makes the chill no issue at all
i tries those tusk rackless bags but did not like them and went back to the tusk rack and olympus bag set up , gave the rackless bags to my son he loves em
Nice deal, I like my XT250 it suits my needs of bike enjoyment. When I decided to get back into bikes I had no desire for a big bike and if I come across a 68 to 73 175 Yamaha Enduro I like I just may buy it to have a throttle full of fun.
Great stuff. Delighted for you. Keen to know given we're not from your part of the world.....how do manage regards wild life especially bears. To some, that may sound rediculous but here in NZ we have nothing like that. Cheers
Congrats on your new ride...sounds like a good fit/choice for you. I'd like a smaller ADV bike in the near future but love my BWM R12GSA for sport touring/camping.
Congratulations on your bike!! Great choice on the 390. I’m sure you’ll enjoy this bike on your shorter trips and maybe the T-7 on your 4-5 day outings. Great video.
Congratulations great choice! I have downsized to the Ktm duke. 60 kgs lighter than my previous Versys 650. Same reason as you pretty much. I was on a moto camping trip, dropped it and couldn’t pick it up by myself. Anyway enjoy the new ride 😁
Very nice choice. I, on the other hand, ride a 250, keeping up with 500-800-1200 bikes. Lots of shifting, and totally sucks on uphill big mountain twisties. If drz had a sixth gear I would be all over that. Husky 701 if I was rich! I'm in Oregon too!
Would really like you to chronicle the problems you have with the bike over the next 2 years so we can see if the KTM reliability issues appear and how you resolved them.
I like that choice, as I sure like my husky 501s versus larger bikes, the 500 s are kind of tall, I'm 6 1 and I still think it's tall We forget these new EFI bikes have more smooth usable power than the older carb bikes. I look forward to full review.
You’re gonna love this bike bud!!! I’m in the same boat as you.. older guy and don’t want to deal with the weight. I did some serious off-road today by accident. Senior even though I had a map…. Anyway, I dropped it twice.. and the second time it was really too much. By the grace of God., and the distance I heard her side-by-side with two guys in it come by.. They were good enough to help me write the ship.!! so you made a great choice. It’s under 400 pounds and handles really well.. if it holds up as well as the Yamaha does, it’s all good for both of us! I’ve got 4000 on my 2023. 👍😊🏍️
By the way.. I am 5’7” 30 inch leg. I love the difference the. Rox risers made. Also getting some different foot pegs, not canted forward like the stock. The stock skid plate is junk. I bought the KTM power sports edition. Trouble with it is, it’s OK for light offloading. It is bolted to the bottom of the engine… not so good. It will cost twice as much for a better one…. I also recommend, you consider eliminating the muffler. It weighs probably 5 pounds., and is cooking the rear shock. I spent the money for a good one made in Oregon, WerkesUsa not made China. The stock muffler is fine. I happen to have a akrapovic slip on, so a little bit loud. They’re still keeping the catalytic converter., and the oxygen censoring place. It will run fine. Today convinced me I made the right choice , replacing the stock mirrors for doubletakes. I would’ve broken the stock ones… enjoy your new bike!
Congrats on your new ktm I actually thought you would go for the honda 500.Just keep an eye on it the ktm wouldn't have a great record but a fabulous machine nonetheless
Hi, I think getting something You Like that you can handle the Weight of, is what Riding a Bike is about. Just because everyone is getting the Big Adventure Bikes doesn’t mean that’s what you should get. It’s more fun to Ride a Bike you are really comfortable with. My biggest question on something like the 390 is does it have enough Top End for Freeway Speeds. I don’t mind going smaller and lighter, but I still need to be able to Cruise at 70MPH. Does the 390 do that? If so I would be interested in downsizing to one of these maybe.
The 390 is not meant to travel on divided highways at freeway speeds. It gets blown around by trucks and wind but it can easily cruise at 70mph. I avoid divided highway riding, so it works for me, but if you intend to ride more than 1/2 hour a time on the freeway then you probably need a larger and heavier bike than the 390.
I'm glad you are liking the KTM 390. Good price on it as well. It looks like you have spoked wheels, but do I guess they aren't tubeless? Ride on, be safe!
I’ll be very interested in the reliability and durability experience you have with your new KTM 390! I’ve looked at this model a number of times but the rumor mill has it that there can be, they say too often etc etc, engine issues. So many times this sort of thing is just made up and not true. So I hope your experience is positive and sets this more to rest. Cheers.
There was some problems on the first year's of the 390A. But those seemed to be fixed as I too have a 23' model. Only real extra that's needed is a FuelX Lite to help make the lower RPM's more usable. Everything else is preference. Also, the next 390A (2025) will be a lot different and then engine will be bumped up a little.
Came across your channel looking for reviews of KTM 390 ADV ! Im 58 riding a BMW GS 1200 thinking of buy a small and lighter bike I have a bad knee and came to a conclusion that 600 # bike is too much for me . I will be following your videos and just like and subscribed
Yes I am riding stock tires right now. They are great on pavement and OK on dirt and gravel. I will keep them for now but maybe get more off-road ability tires next year.
Congratulations on your new ADV rig! I agree with others that you made a wise choice. Dropping some weight, regaining confidence and still having usable power for your riding style makes so much sense. BTW, which Klim jacket are you wearing?
@@MySeniorMoments Thanks for the info. I have the Mojave mesh pants but realize Klim doesn't appear to have a matching mesh jacket for it. Guess the Induction is that match.
Congrats on the new bike! I had a hunch it would be the KTM....it seemed to give you more bang for the buck. I noticed that you have a white background on the TFT....is that something you can configure on your bike?

Rox has risers for the 390 nonstandard size handlebars. Tried shorter ones first and wish I had just gotten the Rox to begin with.
Congrats on your new bike 🎉. Wish you many unforgettable adventure with it. 😊👍🙏
Great choice! I agree with the other comments re bar risers etc. Will also add good tires make a gret difference. Yesterday I traded my 2020 390 for a brand new wire wheel model.
Congrats on the new bike!
Great choice!!!🎉🎉🎉 Looking forward to new videos/adventures on the KTM!
Good looking ride, congrats 👍👍
Happy New Bike Day! Enjoy your new ride
Congratulations on the new bike! It looks great!
Nice bike! Congrats!!
That engine will change in charter after about 1000 miles. It will get better and better!
I am super glad you got a smaller bike the T7 was too heavy for an old man to ride ! I know I'm and old man too ! the issue I think you'll notice the most with the bike is the power
after the Monster power of the T7 it's going to feel lack luster at best.... But give it a chance
and after break-in just give it more throttle than your used to giving a bike... I noticed that on my XR650L.... you have to give it alot more throttle than I am used to... if you do that you will quickly be impressed with the power of the smaller bike ! I know that sounds kind'a stupid like DUH you gott'a give it more throttle because it is a smaller bike ! but seriously I think the
throttle's are more placid now than the old days back in the Honda 350cc days a twist of the wrist gave you full throttle but now that is only about half way on the throttle my XR650L is that way the throttle is very slow ! and I suspect the KTM 390 is the same way.
this is actually a good thing.... on rocky roads your not likely to throttle up when you don't want to, because of a bump ! and with a torquey bike that can get you into trouble !
Hang in there neighbor ! and ride safe !
Great choice! I love mine , once you get some of the ergos and farkles sorted out, I think you’ll find it’s a pretty capable machine.
Enjoy !!
i am 55 and currently nursing a broke ankle , riding a husky 901 that i am hoping i can continue to ride for years to come but my next bike will be the 390adv or something similar , i strongly considered going with a 390 or building a 690/701 into an adv bike prior to buying the 901... the 390 likes to rev from what ive gathered ! i was actually quite surprised about the vibration on the T7 i figured it would be less viby and smoother than my 901 but it was the opposite my 901 is alot smoother although i am running anti vibe bar inserts among many other mods so stock to stock who knows
I like it so far. The T7 was fun, but I always felt a bit challenged riding alone should I drop it.
Glad you have a bike that suits you. It seems like a good choice. I'm looking forward to your future riding videos.
Nice choice! Enjoy your new ride!
congratulation on the new bike. Good choice.
Congratulations on the KTM. (Guess the tubless tires wasn't a do or die requirement. Thought for sure you'd be getting the BMW or the Honda.)
That healing leg break will thank you
Nice! I love mine! They're a ton of fun.
Great choice, after I’ve done my big trip over the next 5 weeks (10k kms), I will be down sizing to the same bike.
Nice deal, I like my XT250 it suits my needs of bike enjoyment. When I decided to get back into bikes I had no desire for a big bike and if I come across a 68 to 73 175 Yamaha Enduro I like I just may buy it to have a throttle full of fun.
Good choice!
Lots of shifting, but that is the tradeoff for a smaller bike. I may opt for the quick shifter.
If you’re happy we are happy. Glad you enjoy the new bike.
Great choice Sir! Congrats!
Was hoping you went with the versys. Only because I did! 😂 went from a KLR. Enjoy it so much more.
Nice, I've been thinking about this move.
Would really like you to chronicle the problems you have with the bike over the next 2 years so we can see if the KTM reliability issues appear and how you resolved them.
Awesome bike!
I like that choice, as I sure like my husky 501s versus larger bikes, the 500 s are kind of tall, I'm 6 1 and I still think it's tall We forget these new EFI bikes have more smooth usable power than the older carb bikes. I look forward to full review.
Congrats on your new ride.
Thanks for the update. I'm enjoying the sub-400 pound ride.
Great you look very happy.
I had the 390 duke I absolutely loved that bike wish I still had it .
390 great bike
Enjoy the new bike
I'm glad you are liking the KTM 390. Good price on it as well. It looks like you have spoked wheels, but do I guess they aren't tubeless? Ride on, be safe!
I believe they have tubes. Even the dealer was not sure, so I will take a wheel off and check myself.
I'm 90% sure "tubeless" will be molded into the sidewall....like the size and brand is...but fairly small print
They may be tubeless. I have a 890 adventure with spoked wheels and the dealer thought they were not tubeless, but they are.
Cheers.
I post any issues I have with the 390 to my channel. Hopefully not many!
@My Senior Moments - How did you find the tires for the type of riding you do? Looks like you have Continental TKC 70 on the bike ...?
Yes I am riding stock tires right now. They are great on pavement and OK on dirt and gravel. I will keep them for now but maybe get more off-road ability tires next year.
Congratulations on your new ADV rig! I agree with others that you made a wise choice. Dropping some weight, regaining confidence and still having usable power for your riding style makes so much sense. BTW, which Klim jacket are you wearing?
Klim Induction mesh jacket
@@MySeniorMoments Thanks for the info. I have the Mojave mesh pants but realize Klim doesn't appear to have a matching mesh jacket for it. Guess the Induction is that match.
I hope you keep the T7, and make videos about it too.
Will be interesting to hear about the reliability. Please report honestly 😉
Congrats on the new bike! I had a hunch it would be the KTM....it seemed to give you more bang for the buck. I noticed that you have a white background on the TFT....is that something you can configure on your bike?
The color of the TFT background automatically changes from light to dark depending on the ambient lighting.
@@MySeniorMoments Is your bike a 2023? I recently got a 2023 890 adventure and it doesn’t change although I would like it to.
i think it will need suspension mods and of course ergonomic mods
Smart man light is right
