The way Bret Hart was booked after the montreal screwjob going to wcw is the all-time worst booking ever hands down.

The ‘Birmingham Screwjob’.- HBK beating Bulldog at WWF One Night Only. Tasteless.

The Lex Express in 1993. Luger was supposed beat Yokozuna for the WWE Title. But Vince McMahon decided to have Lex win by count out and having Bret Hart beat Yokozuna for the WWE Title instead.

      No
Lex was booked to win the strap.
Leading up to the event, Lex blabbed to a reporter, spilling the beans about his upcoming win.

Putting the ECW world title on Steve Corino at November to remember 2000. I was there and the crowd Shat on it. 1st the match was a clusterfuck and nobody understood it. Most people wanted Jerry Lynn to retain or Sandman to win. After the eliminations the crowd started cheering Justin Credible then they overbooked the finish. Tommy:
    10) I always wondered how Southwest got canned. And, given what Tommy said... Yeah, I believe it.
I disagree with Dave, though. I believe WWF would've just kicked the door in, especially with how Vince started paying stations to carry his programming. And wasn't he already doing some of his Capital Centre cards on USA too?
    9) Yeah, you either pull the trigger on Lex or you don't even start it. You had to find someone to pay off slamming Yoko there, or you kill the entire face side of your roster in one shot. Problem: That pretty much has to consummate with the belt, or you find somebody else who will.
    8) When Vince said he had WCW by the throat, he meant it as a shoot. One of the things which sickens me about the business in late 2023 is that WWE/TKO have the initiative to put AEW out of business and basically reduce the opportunities for other places to work.
But this had no chance. Vince wasn't going to let it be this way.
    7) There are any number of those in wrestling history -- Hell, we just saw one at Tommy's #9. But someone like TNA has less margin for error.
    6) That's my #1. Because, if it was a matter of not willing to do business, you don't have the match at Super Sunday. And that basically sealed the deal on Verne. Because not only does he lose Hulk, he basically loses most of his roster to Vince just poaching it out from under him! And within two years, he's a minor-league promotion on the way out, but it takes another five or six before it completely shitcans.

Did Tommy ever do 5-1 once Sam got on it?
    My Top 5:
    1) Hogan gets screwed on Super Sunday. Killed the AWA outright.
    2) Luger and the Maryland State Athletic Commission at Bash '88. Finished the job on Jim Crockett and it took Bischoff and Nitro (and five years?) to save the company temporarily.
    3) Fiend-Rollins, stopping a Hell in a Cell match. That's about the one match type you do not stop, even under present sensibilities. Killed The Fiend character, and pretty much killed Hell in a Cell.
    4) Aborting the CM Punk situation or hotshotting it or whatever. You could well have solidified arrangements with companies all over the world you wanted to work with if you were Vince at that point by actually HAVING Punk defend the title in New Japan or something like that, and you could still have the home promotion say he's not the legit titleholder. But then you hotshot the whole thing and shoot it clear in the head.
    5) I'll put the Fingerpoke here because I think WCW was already swirling the drain, largely thanks to Vince enforcing, iron fist, on his locker room. THAT, enforcing the Screwjob and making it clear who ran the show, won the Monday Night Wars. The Fingerpoke was a counterexample.

    • @GenGamesUniverse
      @GenGamesUniverse 3 місяці тому

With the "Summer of Punk" angle, they indeed were actually going to do what TNA ended up doing with AJ styles and that was have Punk go to different indy companies and go to Japan and defend the "WWE Championship", but he would end up coming back and taking John Cenas spot, but because Triple H and Kevin Nash didn't "like the idea", they got into Vince's ear and Vince ix-nayed it and it was supposed to have set up the whole "Nash vs Punk" angle where Nash was to be the heel and say he was fed up with Punk being on his high horse and that the reason he screwed him out of the WWE title was to show him what he can do" etc, but when Punk eviscerated him on the microphone (the "OMG Kevin Nash, thought he was dead! LOL!" text message bit)
And with the Rollins/Fiend HIAC match, I remember Sean Waltman watching it and going "that was a fucking piece of shit!, you DO NOT have DQs in a hell in a cell match!"

    Dave Part II:
    5) No it wasn't, Dave. It was an openly racist angle, from Vince. What HHH said was not only what a lot of promoters believed back in the day, but Vince loudest of all. In fact, so much so, he turned Kofi Kingston's win into a patronizing moment that, given the opportunity, he completely nullified. Another match which never should've taken place.
And for those who think you couldn't effectively do something like that "BECAUSE": Ron Simmons says hello.
    4) That's a tough call on The Streak. And here's the worst part of it: Heyman's a shitstirrer. This almost certainly was stirring shit. But if Lesnar wanted to shoot on Taker, at Mania, to end The Streak, could Taker have done anything about it? Especially with a concussion? If you know what I'm saying and what I might be implying... If you don't want to end The Streak with Lesnar, then don't have the match at Mania. And if you don't want to end The Streak with Lesnar, who DO you end it with? Roman???
    3) I said that WCW was basically gone long before Arquette. Vince pretty much had the dagger in, Hogan, etc. finished it with the Fingerpoke.
    2) That was another company-killer, especially given the context. Oof.
    1) I don't see how that's a bad _booking decision_, more than just it was executed so shit with the False Screwjob (which wasn't a false screwjob to begin with!). Sting has to win that match or you have to give company over to the NWO, and they weren't gonna do that.

    The invasion angle

  • @michaelfalkner1186

    Dave:
10 (and really 9 as well): Vince thinks he's the sole Alpha Male, up to and including rape and murder (which I believe he's done to members of the roster). The bad booking decision in Mania 31 was letting Vince jack off on what he hoped was the corpse of the industry by having this match at all. I was at Mania 31, and that made NO SENSE.
As for The Nexus: Vince, for all of what he says otherwise, HATES NXT and hates even giving opportunities to all but the very cream of the top who will literally kiss his ass. The Nexus was a great way to get NXT over in a way which would make them relevant, but you couldn't do that -- because 1) Vince hates anything he doesn't create -- even when he farms it out... and 2) Daniel Bryan was really hated by Vince, 22 ways from Tuesday.
    8) As I said in the other comment, that's my #1. That ended the AWA. The AWA could've been a national third promotion, especially with what it ended up getting in ESPN. The fact is, though, they had The Man. I don't think anyone can underestimate how much Hulk could've done for that company. But there were two problems: One was the merch money and that Hulk and Verne both knew Hulk was bigger than the company. The second was Verne thinking he could wrestle his way through this. It wasn't wrestling anymore, especially in Verne's view of it.
    7) By then, I don't think WCW was saveable. The saddest thing about it: The more you know about Arquette and his approach to the business, the less you have against this. He gave all the money from his wrestling to the Pillman family (IIRC), and really, even to this day, has tried to take the business seriously to "atone". This was above Arquette.
    6) See #9 and #10. They even began to trial-run the match in a number of house shows, and even did some screwjob wins for Flair that didn't change the belt, etc. But then Vince had to Vince and you know what happens from there.

The problem with some of these is that, in many cases, these are matches which never should've sanely taken place.
HHH-Sting in WWE with Vince running the show was a non-starter.
So was Booker T-HHH, especially with Booker T being the last WCW champion (and that's before we get to how much of a racist prick Vince is).
The Montreal Screwjob never happens if I'm booking: Bret is fired for insubordination (or Cornette, now that he admits he was the genesis of it with history, sends someone out to shoot on Bret and take him out of the equation legit!), the match never happens, the belt is given to Shawn at the next US card.
Neither, even with it being my #1, does Super Sunday. If this was a merch deal or Japan money or whatever have you, then Verne can't let that match go on and screw them again. He's either gotta give Hulk the strap or move on.
