How is it a bitch move? Is the runners fault for missing the bag. And with the tying run on second all they needed was a base hit to tie the game. Sorry if playing by the rules is a bitch move, but the awareness from the players, coach, and umpire for that matter was great.
+HLGCeltic24 tf was the awareness all he did was watch a guy the entire time no one in their mind would have watched a guy in real baseball like seriously all e did was watch the guy instead of the play u idiot way awareness are u serious in guessing u either play for that team or u have never seen baseball
Jesus Christ dude your english is atrocious. The awareness I'm talking about is being able to focus on the play while also paying attention to the runner. If all the did was play and not pay attention to the runner, no one would have noticed he missed the bag and then he wouldn't have been out. Damn man, asking me if I've ever seen baseball. Have you ever seen a classroom?
Totally not a bitch move, that is why there are rules. If they were aware of a missed play, congrads to the winning team. The 3rd base coach and/or the manager did not come and try to get the play overturned. This is part of baseball . . .
+Game Changer- Madden Minecraft and more you're taught to run into the bag to avoid these kinds of plays... he cut the corner so to speak forcing the ump to decide whether his heel grazed the bag in passing... bad base running regardless of whether it was the correct call or not. The fact Miami's 3rd base coach didnt bother trying to argue it though suggests he knew the heel missed.
as an umpire I can tell you, when you see it you're thinking to yourself...they need to appeal this correctly...and you're going through the steps in your head before they do it.
This is actually a VERY good ending. Props to the kids for keeping their heads in the game and realizing that he didn't in fact touch the base. On replay, if this video had better quality, would show clearly that he missed the base. Honestly, I think he missed it. Nice heads up play by those kids. Not a bad ending at all.
umm that isnt the worst baseball ending. that is just baseball. the ump called it. Not sure what your getting at here. I feel sorry for the other team, but hey, it happened, nothing to do about it but learn. Yeah it sucks, but thumbs up and bravo for both teams for making it to that level.
A time out is not a play, it's a dead ball. Once the ball is put back into play, then the appeal can be made AS LONG AS THERE IS NO PITCH MADE, because that would be a PLAY. Also the reason the runner isn't called out for not touching the bag is because in that situation it was the SECOND runner, who then could have gone bag and attempted to touch the base while the appeal was being made, BECAUSE it's a live ball.
Max Moore Not in the case of home plate. He would have to retrace by touching home first and then back to third. Once he touches third he's safe and can advance home at his own risk. Playing high school ball I saw that very thing happen. We were playing on a field that had no outfield fence in right field. (yes very bizarre). Our player hit a ball over the right fielders head that would have clearly been a mammoth shot out any field we played on. But in this instance the runner at second missed third, tagged home got about halfway to the entrance to the dugout and our coach sent him back to third. He stepped on home ran to third and ran back home while the throw came in to third for the play.
Shane Thomas Brandon Wieckert's point is valid. Once that runner is in the dugout, he is no longer a base runner. If he attempted to retrace his way to third base, it wouldn't be allowed by rule.
that is very good coaching and poor coaching. no excuse for any runner to miss the base. if you do miss the base, the coaches have to teach the runner to return to the base. not continue because if the defense is watching, 'You Are Out'. proud of the kids on defense for their awareness on the play.
Actually you are paying attention to the game if you're looking at if a runner touched a base. That makes no sense how you wouldn't be. You know the runner is part of the game right?
steve b Ok BUT it was the other teams fielder who saw/said he missed the bag not the ump. The umps didn't call him back or out right away cause they didn't think it was an issue! That means your going on the word of the infielder. The 3rd basemen can say he missed the bag all day but if the ump didn't see it, it doesn't matter! Just giving my opinion is all.
This isn't the worst baseball ending. It was a heads up call by the players and coach of the California team. Someone saw it and the coach was great in instructing his kids on how to properly appeal the play. Watching the slow motion of the runner, his foot completely missed the bag. Good call.
I disagree. Not clear at all. There was not a chance at a close play at home so an intelligent baserunner would step clearly on the bag. This team deserves to lose for making that mistake.
This has always been a terrible rule. If the umpire knows the runner missed the bag, then he should call him out right then and there. Otherwise, the umpire knowingly allows a team to score a run that he knows is not a run. How can that be good for the game? What if all sports officials saw a penalty occur and chose to call it only wait if the opposing team also saw the penalty? On its face, this rule opens up the opportunity for corruptness to enter the game. It's a stupid rule.
***** I know that. I was questioning tntkop's logic in his original post. Under his scenario, an ump would call an out the moment he sees the baserunner miss the base. That doesn't make any sense.
For everyone saying "it's questionable" there was no doubt in that umps mind. You could tell he was waiting for it and the second it was thrown over he called out, no hesitation
Right. Ump's a lot closer than the camera, and he saw everything. He doesn't make that call that emphatically unless he sees dirt between the foot and the base. Likely that foot that looked so close was a half inch or so off on the z plane (IE behind the bag from the camera angle)
Gotta hand it to the Hawaii coach, he could have raised holy hell, but he took the call like a true sportsman and went right over to his team to do some "coaching" and "teaching" about the integrity of the game. Personally, I think it's bush league to point out a technicality in little league, there are much more important lessons to be taught and learned.
David Lamb To me the issue is did he really miss that bag - I think you've got to be 100% sure he missed it to make that call and it looks like his back foot came close to getting that bag.
Bill Cenne its the perfect lesson to be taught, always be aware of the rules and whats happening during the game.. you think a better lesson would be if you can get away with cheating then you should?
Well, there was a pretty important lesson taught as is: make sure you touch every base. Rules are rules. There is no grey area. And that's a good thing.
no way this is the bad ending. The players picked up on the fact, the umpire knew that the runner didnt touch the bag, the 3rd base coach didnt argue is the key that they ump got it right.
donjen3 ok, so I adjusted my screen, and it's clear he missed the bag completely ... what is wrong with you ? Had a bad experience in Hawaii or something ?
donjen3 sounds like those unwritten rules are all made-up by the likes of you ... but I know enough to know that the calmwas bang-on, and you hate Hawaii ... (you probably hate Obama, too)
The kid should be paying attention to what his outfielder is doing, not waht the runner is doiing. Only people who like lawyers would call this kid "paying attention". The Petaluma coach should off himself for teaching kids what he did. I love that town too...
For those that missed it, the runner did tag third base. His heel caught the side of the bag facing home plate. Both the ump and the third base coach couldn't see it.
I thought that was a great ending to a game. Reminds me of those NFL plays where some idiot blowhard punts the ball before he crosses the line. A valuable lesson in why it's important to play the game properly.
wilfrid55 Well of course it should count. Apparently you don't know that if any part of foot touches the bag it counts. When a game(especially this important) is on the line, the ump should not have made the wrong call. The runner clearly was going to score. Bad call and bad reply on your part.
donjen3 I agree with you, but you said it "looks like" he did, which is inconclusive. In my estimation, he ran over it, it was close, but not enough for me, it's not a bad call ...
wilfrid55 I said "looks like he did" versus saying looks like he didn't should be by default as skimming bag. You could make the case every night watching major league baseball when the second baseman barely skims or doesn't skim bag turning a double play. In this case there was no play at the plate and ump should have kept quite. Horrible ending to a game as titled and I bet the ump is taking crap for the call.
+Chris Aplin totally different topic. Total difference skill set. How hard is it to touch the white thing as you make the turn for the next bag? The "banana" turn you make is so you touch the bag are the middle of apex of the turn, also allowing you a better push towards the next bag. Hitting and base running are two totally different topics. If you want I can discuss that with you as well.
Rules say that the appeal must be before the pitcher faces the next batter, or another play begins (which did not happen) therefore, he is out on appeal.
Al Burbank Never said that wasn't a rule, you misinterpreted my comment. 'A play' is something like a pickoff or a hit, a ball in play is whether or not the ball is alive or dead. An appeal has to be with a live ball, but cannot be before another play commences or the pitcher faces (pitches to) another batter.
Matt Patton Look up the challenge play on the Browns Jaguars game when Couch was QB. Even though the rule states if you get a play in before the challenge is made it you can't go back and review it. It happened then, game was cancelled and Browns lost their playoff chance. So regardless of what rules may be, we see them bend from time to time.
I think this is one of the best endings I've seen! For that kid to be paying attention that well right after his left fielder made a costly error is outstanding. Also give credit to the ump also for making the right call.
This is bullshit. Runner didnt touch the base but appeal should be done right after the wrong play. If next batter already come into batterbox and started play, nobody can claim this.
So heartbreaking for the kids from Hawaii, but so heads up by the kids from NoCal to see that he missed the base, and for their coach having them do the appeal
Very good play by the thrid base who called the missed base and asked for a time out. The coach did well too, instead of starting to talk to umps, he made the good decision.
He probably didn't. Years ago, I was working a game with a new umpire and he heard the coach yell about the runner missing the bag, so he banged him out on appeal. After the game, the rookie ump admitted he didn't see the runner miss the bag but felt pressured to call the runner out.. 99% of the time, the coach making the appeal is wrong.
The only things I will say is that the left fielder needs to work on his fielding of ground balls. Also the 3rd baseman should have said who's he's appealing to make it properly done. As a umpire he missed the bag plain and simple no touching happened.
You are trying to see if he touched the bag from one angle, an angle that isn't very good due to depth perception. The third base ump was at a completely different angle where he could see space between the base and the foot and called the out on a correct appeal. What you don't hear is half of the Petaluma stands all crying out at once that the runner missed the bag as soon as it happens. I'm sure that is what tipped off the coach initially. For anyone who says that he shouldn't have called it, where do you draw the line on what to call? You don't call this because it isn't fair to the kids but it isn't fair to the kids who saw the play and made a correct appeal to rob them of their diligence because you don't want the game to end that way. As an umpire, you are not to put personal feelings in the way of calling what is there in front of you. To do otherwise is to cheat one team out of what they earned.
if your foot gets so close to the bag you cant tell for sure if he touched the bag or not after watching it in slow motion, then just give the runner the bag
That is a tough one. Ump had a good view, and was watching, but it was tight. Almost impossible to tell if the heel would have grazed the bag. If i was the ump, I never would have made that call.
Slowing it down, it appears the second runners left heel nipped the bag as he was rounding third, but that is me being able to pause the video. Umpires don't have that luxury.
If a baserunner misses making physical contact with the bag as he passes it, he has to go back and tag that base to be safe. It has to happen entirely at the discretion of the baserunning team, since the umpires are just there to judge plays. The defense realized that one of the baserunners missed touching third on his way to home and made an appeal play by tagging third base with a live ball in the following play. Since the umpire was aware of the situation, it was called out.
heel touches the bag. umpire screwed up. umpires absolutely adore being able make calls like that. it makes them feel important and like they are the ones in control, and that they know more than the players/coaches. some umpires live for that, you can tell this guy is that way by how excited he was to call the kid out. at the most you could argue that the foot touching the bag was "to close to call" in which case as an umpire you would never opt to call him out and end the game on such play.
12kevinnivek21 as a former player, coach and umpire the unwritten rule is this: MAKE SURE YOU TOUCH THE BASES WHERE EVEN A BLIND MAN CAN SEE YOU DID IT! his heel didn't touch shit. if you look at his shoe it doesn't move as when friction is applied through touching the bag. because it wasn't there. that 3rd base coach and the runner should be flogged. terrible fundamentals and base awareness. aloha and buh bye!

correct
Bruh, title is not spelled tittle. Look it up.
Lol the ticker at the bottom... Chad Johnson arrested on domestic assault
lol it would've been the left fielder's worst day of his life if they ended up losing. Instead it was the kid who missed third
He didn't miss it lol

+rockstermaniac that is very true but it was Hawaii, not Miami.
According to that grainy video, he didn't miss it; at least, not enough for that 3rd base ump to call him out from the position he was standing.
Why does this say worst Baseball Ending? Thought it was pretty good that the players paid attention.
Definitely a learning situation and that is baseball.
More like the coach paid attention.
AJ Brandonisio Coach was listening to the kids who thought that a runner missed a base. This was the kids in the field picking up on something.

Brandon Wieckert Well said! I do not understand how people can get on here, have no clue of this rule, and act like everyone else is a moron.
People don't read rulebooks or don't like to ask questions...
Brandon Wieckert How could the second runner return to the bag from the dugout?? He's already well outside of the baseline, which is an automatic out.
Max Moore Not in the case of home plate. He would have to retrace by touching home first and then back to third. Once he touches third he's safe and can advance home at his own risk. Kinda sad, kinda smart. The ump knew it all along. Called the kid out immediately.
BEST ending not worst...that kid was paying attention to the game....not crying about the error. GREAT teamwork
Your not paying attention to the game if your looking at if a runner touched a base, your playing fake
Actually you are paying attention to the game if you're looking at if a runner touched a base. That makes no sense how you wouldn't be. You know the runner is part of the game right?
Kartkid024 correct!!and when tryouts come around this young man will be picked first
Agreed, way to pay attention and catch the mistake! Good teamwork and concentration.
no ur not supost to look at his feet and think dont touch the base ur supost to watch the ball
probably the best catch in baseball... no pun intended
oh you intended it
worst title for a youtube video, maybe
Close, but no cigar. The umpire knew *immediately*. Awesome coaching.
How was this the worst? It was a great heads-up play!
Worst for Hawaii.

It's a stupid rule.
The ump is there to enforce the rules, it's up to the teams to point out or appeal.
He would be helping the other team if he did. It would be like the umpire letting the catcher know that the runner at 1st is going to steal.
Well what if the player went back to tag the base knowing that he missed it??
FrankReynolds, Paddys Pub, CEO
Then he would have been ruled safe. But he didn't and the catcher tagged him for the out.

Right. Ump's a lot closer than the camera, and he saw everything. He doesn't make that call that emphatically unless he sees dirt between the foot and the base. Likely that foot that looked so close was a half inch or so off on the z plane (IE behind the bag from the camera angle)
Umpires are taught to "sell" close calls...emphatically.
That poor secound runner! A Cenimeter away!!! I would have cried!
Such a great coach
Ikr better than my dad
This isn't cheating
donjen3 He didn't cheat.
donjen3
He never cheated it was a fair play....
lmCIoudz
He didn't cheat, but he cheated Hawaii out of a win...This call is bullshit and the Petaluma coach should be ashamed of even pursuing that.
It's a great ending. Great awareness from both Northern California and the 3rd base ump.

It's not the worst ending, it's the smartest
Looked to me like the heel brushed the bag but tough to tell, and the fact that the 3rd base coach didn't even argue speaks volumes.
Either that, or he wasn't paying enough attention himself.
no way this is the bad ending. The players picked up on the fact, the umpire knew that the runner didnt touch the bag, the 3rd base coach didnt argue is the key that they ump got it right.
He missed it buy way to go California for even seeing it!
Worst? This is awesome! I've done this to someone before, it was great XD
no, it's NOT tough to tell ... he missed the fricken bag ....
Wrong,he not only skimmed bag,his heel hit the bag on the way down. Adjust your screen maybe?
donjen3 ok, so I adjusted my screen, and it's clear he missed the bag completely ... what is wrong with you ? Had a bad experience in Hawaii or something ?

Oh Ok Wilfred. It was my OPINION. Grow up
How is this the worst ending ever?
It was for Hawaii I guess-- lol.
Clickbait
Smart coach I'll give him a ok👏
How can this possibly be called the worst ending? That is fantastic awareness by the player, coach and umpire. A great teaching moment.
A worse baseball ending would be if it was a blown call, or straight up wrong call
You gotta make sure you touch the base. Even if you have to stutter once, it's kind of an obvious thing to do, and clearly the umpire noticed it.
Not a bad ending at all this is a very baseball minded young man at third paying attention to the game
That was reigonals
BlockBuilder03
100% agree, great baseball play

ant banks 'he shoul be watching his outfielder'?!?...Who the hell coached you as a kid? Stupid ass.. rules is rules son. Handle up
this is awesome and funny as hell
nice catch by the base man
Wow. What a weird ending.
How is this worst? He missed the bag, he's out. Good job of the defense noticing.
Worst way to lose for the other team.
For those that missed it, the runner did tag third base. His heel caught the side of the bag facing home plate. Both the ump and the third base coach couldn't see it.
+Greg N ---I agree.
+Greg N its a bang bang call. not a terrible call. you can see why the umpire thought he missed the bag.
I thought that was a great ending to a game. Reminds me of those NFL plays where some idiot blowhard punts the ball before he crosses the line. A valuable lesson in why it's important to play the game properly.

I can't explain how sad I would be if I was that close from Williamsport
In the spirit of the game, I would never make this call if I were an ump unless the bag was missed by a foot or more.....
how is this the worst baseball ending? i think bud selig saying that the all star game ends in a tie was the worst endng.

+Vince Niederman Why. Do. You. Use. A. Capital. Letter. At. Every. Word.
The All-Star game is a joke anyway.
the play shouldn't exist anymore they already called it a score and then they waited an entire play after.complete bull shit it sounds like to me
He missed the bag, that is that. He is penalized. How would they appeal it during that play? They have to wait a play to do it
Rules say that the appeal must be before the pitcher faces the next batter, or another play begins (which did not happen) therefore, he is out on appeal.

I think this is one of the best endings I've seen!
For that kid to be paying attention that well right after his left fielder made a costly error is outstanding. Also give credit to the ump also for making the right call.
Misleading title is misleading.
How does the hitter only get to second on that?
Austin101123 slow runner plus little league fields are tiny
No point in making it a close play at 3rd. This is LL, not the MLB. With 2 outs it doesn't matter whether he's on 2nd or 3rd.
Best part of the video, the two guys in the comments fighting for a call that happened like three years ago...
Oh, man, Chad Johnson got arrested again? That dude can not stay out of trouble!
This is bullshit. Runner didnt touch the base but appeal should be done right after the wrong play. If next batter already come into batterbox and started play, nobody can claim this.
It was made right after the play. If the pitcher throws a pitch, it is over. That is why they had a conference on the mound. Play was never resumed.
1gallimaufry The appeal has to be immediate with no interruptions, if they mess up a throw somewhere or have time called the appeal can't be made.
Junghyun Park He never threw the pitch, has nothing to do with the batters box.
It's a time out. He can't appeal until the batter is in the box
Frankie S he can appeal as soon as the umpire says play
bad ending because of the rules of the game? whiners.
Well played, good game. Congrats!
this is just great
I felt so bad at first for the kid who missed the ball in the outfield
great job paying attention and getting the runner
So heartbreaking for the kids from Hawaii, but so heads up by the kids from NoCal to see that he missed the base, and for their coach having them do the appeal
great ump
That left fielder is the luckiest man since Lou Gehrig...
That's good heads up alertness to pick up on that base running mistake and use it to your advantage!!!
Very good play by the thrid base who called the missed base and asked for a time out. The coach did well too, instead of starting to talk to umps, he made the good decision.
Heh who knew Air could play baseball xD
That happened to me once, but I actually stepped right in the middle of the base!! It really does suck to get called out on something like that
That's actually amazing that the coach saw that. Who watches that closely?
He probably didn't. Years ago, I was working a game with a new umpire and he heard the coach yell about the runner missing the bag, so he banged him out on appeal. After the game, the rookie ump admitted he didn't see the runner miss the bag but felt pressured to call the runner out.. 99% of the time, the coach making the appeal is wrong.
You gotta touch the base. Even on a homerun.
The only things I will say is that the left fielder needs to work on his fielding of ground balls. Also the 3rd baseman should have said who's he's appealing to make it properly done. As a umpire he missed the bag plain and simple no touching happened.
Good heads up baseball
Please explain why it's a " Worst Baseball Ending" ? Rules are rules, he missed touching the bag.
This is good coaching!
Good call!
that was the best baseball ending for california
and me
if your foot gets so close to the bag you cant tell for sure if he touched the bag or not after watching it in slow motion, then just give the runner the bag
The ump totally knew he never touched
great call
Best baseball ending baby
In a championship game I played in, I missed 3rd base twice in one game, we still ended up winning, but it was still really embarrassing
worst? this was smart!
That is a tough one. Ump had a good view, and was watching, but it was tight. Almost impossible to tell if the heel would have grazed the bag. If i was the ump, I never would have made that call.
Saw the title, and saw it was a little league game. Figured the batter got beaned in the noggin and died or something.
I don't think it was a bad ending because it shows how aware the kids are
This was just A+ coaching and player awareness. Sometimes that will steal you a win when you least expect it. Good job.
Good job coach
Slowing it down, it appears the second runners left heel nipped the bag as he was rounding third, but that is me being able to pause the video. Umpires don't have that luxury.
Wow, that was really smart
good job.
you guys should even play base ball
The rules of the game for over 100+ years now. It's what makes baseball what it is
this is an excellent job by the coach! definitely the right way to end the game
He umpire saw the kid running and immediately saw that he missed the base but the other team had to appeal to get the out. He missed the base
The*
Bryan Bordes I know how an appeal works... 1:17 heel is touching the bag
I thought the kid's heel touched the bag too actually...but fuck it.
Great ending and a smart coach.
Wow...even in hockey they tell the player he's off-sides.
3rd base coach knew right away
