I think the laptop and smartphone were the most important things in elevating international travel.
I remember the only way to travel was to go through a brick and mortar travel agency. They would print out airline tickets and hotel vouchers.
And the only way to keep in touch with family while on a trip was using a calling card in a pay phone booth.
And that was not very long ago...maybe a little over 10 years. We've come a long way!
I budget traveled Europe for 6 months before internet and I did just fine. Never reserved, just used guide books and pay phones. ANd word of mouth from other travelers. Oh yeah, Eurorail Pass made making connections irrelevant too.
I didn´t have a laptop when I first when travelling, only an old Nokia cellphone which switched itself off mid English channel. (I left the UK on a bike and rode across Europe) I had a tent for accommodation, other accommodation was just found as and when needed by simply asking local people or other travellers. Not being in touch was great. It meant I was where I was. I called home once a week from a payphone, and sent postcards from countries as I was leaving them. I spent 5 & 1/2 months travelling around Europe like that, managed to get a ride crewing in a sailboat for a month around the Greek Islands, and I still think the lack of planning made it the best trip I´ve done.

i preferred backpacking before the internet as it was more of an adventure. Was in 92 so no cellphone just guide book and phone numbers .But its true its a lot easier now , but dont feel as much of an adventurer
@@acidthunder1 100% agree with you. And that's why I run into so many ignorant travelers now, because all they need is a cellphone, no common sense of adventure and they can travel around the world 🙁 And they're everywhere now!
Gabriel, I think you forgot one important reason and that's being single and without kids :)
For me the passport is main difference, I started traveling by watching your videos and liked your simple style of making videos. but I face so many difficulties in getting visas to different countries. even for Thailand visa, we have to gather a bunch of documents and then send to the embassy and wait for weeks to receive the visa. and since I'm married and have 3 kids, this is the second most difficult part of my travel journey. but still I'm trying hard to overcome it and have visited 29 countries in last 3 years.
I'm agree to the rest of your points. and I'm also making videos sometimes in English and most of the times in Urdu/Hindi.

Another thing that helps, is having a really long layover, so you get a bonus country while you're on your way to a destination!

I am working fulltime as a nurse but make sure i travel once or twice a year. Your my inspiration to travel full time in 3yrs time when my daughter finished her Uni. Until then i just have to tag along with you every time you post a new video. God Bless you🙏

The WW1 torpedo boat 'Drazki' at 6:40 built in 1907 is pretty cool. It's a nice beach to just sit in the sand & chill out. I was there last year.

Very true Gabe, English is really a universal language. It's also handy to have a powerful passport, not needing a Visa for most countries.. In 2017, we cruised from AUS to Greece (33 days) but needed to get Visas for Sri Lanka and India. Sri Lanka was easy enough as I did it online in 20 mins and was Free. The Indian one however, took 2 weeks and I had to mail our passports into their office in Melbourne to affix a Visa page in our passports. It was a multiple entry visa and was valid for 6 mths. Even tho we were on a cruise ship we needed it to even be able to sail in Indian waters. Cost was around $105 Australian dollars. The entire time I was thinking I hope they don't lose our passports in the mail.
Luckily India now has an evisa option in which you can apply online, so that you don't have to mail in your passport. I hate doing that.

Aren't some flights cheaper when you fly during low tourist seasons (as I see many of your trips are not in the peak travel periods)?

very true. first time i left the country besides canada, i got jumped on busy street by 6 people for my wallet which had 25 dollars in it. Nearly died. If i was as tall as him they pick another guy
I dont think its about size. Its all about how one carry oneself in a strange place. If you have that fearful, doubtful and lost look in your eyes, people will spot you and take advantage of you. Just be confident and show some street smarts and you will be ok.
Of course if you are not willing to be brave, then you should stay at home. Gabe may be tall, but he is a very skinny fella. He carries himself very confidently and in a street smart way.

It's a plain fact that large males are by the odds a less attractive target for physical attack.
Physical stature dominance among humans is an instinct held over from pre-historic times when the decision to take stuff by force was influenced mainly by the size and thus apparent strength of the targeted individual. I'm a 6'3 male. I'm not bragging and I don't start fights or steal but I go out at night and don't even think about how I carry myself.

Hi Gabriel i am from Romaniaand i recomend going to the city Brasov in Romania not far from Bucharest. You can get the train for 2 hours . well.... I speak English,Arabic, am learning German,and can say a couple of sentences in Español, and I can use the Internet, BUT I have a Syrian Passport😢 and the Currency is not so good!😑 only main two factors I lack! ☹
Try to get a job in one of those countries, apply for a job, get your resident card, than apply to be a citizen of that country than get the passport.

This is not how currencies work. In your case if you have UA-cam pay you in say Bulgarian Lev, they won't pay you the same Lev as they would in Dollars. So for instance if the exchange ratio was 2:1 USD:Lev, then for each dollar you would have received UA-cam will pay you 2 Lev. The reason that it's cheaper to buy a substitute item in BG versus the US, is that the costs to produce the item in BG are lower. I think you'll find that if you try and buy US items in BG they are the same cost in US dollars, or more than if you were in the US.

One thing - what I see is you always marching to somewhere. The reality of travelling, is where time is spent and doing what, other than sleeping. How much time do you spend planning, which sites do you use, how much money do you carry generally....?

You can travel the US VERY cheaply by van/RV camping/living. You can buy a cheap van and boondock every nite for free and cook with a campstove or whatever. Hundreds of vids on this. This goes for almost anywhere in the Americas but far easier in US and Canada.

There is an Indian YT travel Vlogger called "mountain trekker".... he traveled a huge part of Russia with just 230 US dollars and parts of Europe like Hungary Czech Austria for just 150 USD (excluding flight tickets)... just by couch surfing and hitch hiking... so yes, if you really have the desire to travel from your heart, not even your average financial condition or currency power can stop you :D

I have a Canadian passport, and I speak fluent Cantonese, Mandarin, and English. I can speak a little bit Italian, Japanese, and Korean (only up to the point of reading signs, greeting, shopping, but not asking directions). I have no problem in money. But my problem is physical condition. Too bad, when you are old, you have money (enough to travel), but not physical.

Honestly, it's cheaper to travel in a lot of countries (eg SE Asian countries) it's way cheaper than living in a Western country.

Question? I am retired, and travel overseas every summer, but for the last 15 years or so, only to the UK, and for the last five years to Spain. Always to hike and explore in the country. For the last few years I have been traveling on one way tickets so that I can return to the US when I want. I understand that some countries require you to posses a return ticket back to your home country before they will let you in. How do you handle this? Or do you always travel round trip? I enjoy your videos immensely.
hey Tom, yes there are indeed some countries that expect you to have an onward flight, such as the Philippines, Indonesia and Colombia. However it's loosely enforced. When I visited those countries I made sure I had another flight because of what I'd read. I was never asked about it by the customs officials, but I was asked for proof of a flight by the airlines. So you do want to do some research about the countries you're going to and be prepared in that regard. You can always just buy a cheap flight to somewhere nearby if you aren't sure of your plans and then if you don't take it then it's no big loss.
Most of the time it's cheaper to buy three single tickets, then one two-way return ticket. It also gives you more options for finding cheap flights
Having a lot of money is also good. You will not get stressed if something happens to you during the trip.

American passport holders still need to apply for visa to visit Turkey. It's just a matter of 20 minutes online and aprox 25 euro. Turkey is so affordable outside Istanbul. Mamaris is 1 hour 15min away by ferry. From there, you can go Islands hoping

@@GabrielTravelerVideos Prior to 2019, I also didn't choose the visa upon arrival option for Turkey, I always wanted my visa to be approve before my travel (e.g. Cambodia/Vietnam).
I did a lot of research last year for Turkey so that I can travel the entire west coast by bus & Gulet( yacht). There are many Gulet company which offer different routes along the Turkish Rivera and also by charter to Greek island of Rhodes & Kos. The all inclusive Gulet package are aprox 100Euro/day~breakfast/lunch/tea/dinner + sightseeing. Low season is May/June/Sept so it'll be cheaper.
If you just want to take the ferry to Greece, it can be either from Bordrum, Marmaris or Fethiye. and go thru custom. I love the combination of travel between Turkey & Greece this way, I get to see more places and the Turkish buses are so affordable and excellent service with a few free drinks+ snacks.
@@worldcitizeng6507 Sounds good! I might end up going back to Turkey sometime this fall. So the visa on arrival is no longer available? I was there in October of 2019 and got the visa at the airport.

When you visit Turkey again, don't forget to treat yourself to a Turkish bath and make an episode about it, your fans will love it :) It was difficult to video it on the ladies side, lol

Yes, that's the way they talk to each other in Greece while Bulgarians go on holiday in the summers or Greeks go to Bulgaria for skiing🎿 in the winter.

It sure does help when you're from a country with a strong currency to kickstart your life as a traveler but anyone can make money off the internet. Key here is the language. No matter where you're from, if you learn to really master the English language and you learn a skill (whether that's programming or making UA-cam videos, it doesn't matter) then the world is at your feet. A strong passport is nice to have but it always comes down to money. When you have money you can get a visa easily. I know people from Thailand and Indonesia who travel at least as much as I do as a European. Sure they need to get visas for countries that I don't need but they just consider that a formality. It's mostly about being able to show you can afford to stay and if you can because you have a successful UA-cam channel for example then you can basically go wherever you want. You just have to acquire the right mindset and not be stuck in whatever situation you are.
In the end its not at all about where you're form. Free your mind, monetize the internet and the planet is yours. :)
