However, those two cities have many great museums, beautiful architecture (especially Bucharest), and a very interesting history. AND they are very affordable!
I'm a solo traveler and go to restaurants all the time. Just not expensive ones. I hate cooking in an apartment and eating alone when I could be outdoors exploring and eating at a place that looks interesting (always ask locals for recommendations!). I found the key to food savings is to eat a light breakfast and then dinner (or whatever meal they offer) between 3 and 5 p.m. Dinner typically costs twice as much as lunch. You can snack a bit during the day (buy a to go sandwich and coffee and enjoy your lunch in a central park!). Just my input.
Yes, another vote for Tirana, Albania here. Also, as I am sure Mark knows, Berlin. I am always surprised how little we seem to spend when visiting there.

Dubrovnik is really nice city but make sure to visit it couple of years from now when the GoT’s popularity drops a little. It’s too crowded and prices are too high for Croatia
I agree. Dubrovnic is a delight. A bit pricier than most places in Croatia but not too bad. The Got tourists are not really a problem ( I admit it was a factor for me ) but the real problem are the cruise ships.
No one from Croatia would go to DU. It is a beautiful city but a tourist trap, overcrowded, overpriced due to the cruise ships constantly bringing toursits...go for the islands Hvar, Brac, Vis, Korcula, Krk
It is. It's the most expensive city in Croatia. If you are going to stay there, get a BnB. Rick Steves does a great episode on Dubrovnik. Croatia is cheap in general.
I haven’t been to the Baltics yet, but this list is spot-on! I’m glad to see Krakow getting some love as well as Portugal. I think Split, Croatia also deserves a spot somewhere on the list.
Yup Vilnius over Riga. And pretty much any city in Poland apart from Warsaw over Krakow. I didn't find Krakow great value, but some of the other cities are insanely cheap. And no way Dubrovnik, or even Split, for "cheap". However he was very clear it is his personal choice so no criticism. I appreciate his effort. Phillip.
I was literally standing where you are in this video, I visited Krakow mainly from your poland video about Krakow, and how cheap it is. youre a blessing!
It's only expensive depending on where you eat and the type of accomodation you stay at. I rented a one bed apartment a few minutes from the old town (had an amazing balcony view) for 50 eur/night. And I didn't eat out in restuarants in the old town as they charge a lot. Most things to do in Dubrovnik don't require spending much money. I wouldn't necessarly include it in a list of the most inexpensive cities in Europe to visit though, as there are cheaper alternatives, although very few places compare to it.
I used to see Croatian cities in the list of "cheap places" in many blogs. I think their price blew up thanks to Game of Thrones, and then now people are starting to go to Croatia after they placed 2nd in the world cup. Zagreb is still a lot cheaper, but everybody keep saying it's not really worth visiting long.

@@tilikumtim5562 Restaurant prices in the Old Town are like that in western Europe, from my perspective. But everything else is pretty affordable.
Couldn't agree with you more! I find it meh and too touristy to my liking too. My personal favorite cities in Croatia are Rovinj and Zadar though. Greetings from Hong Kong!
Dubrovnik is expensive!!! And not authentic... And Prague is full of scams... Check out Sofia, Tbilisi and Sarajevo. Those are truly cheap and super authentic, they don't look to you like an stupid tourist wanting your dollars, but grateful that you visit their country.
This summer I was blessed to see Prague, Vienna, and Budapest. Coming back to the states has been quite the European hangover lol. Ready to get back to Europe!! Thanks Wolters World for the great videos and suggestions!!
Lisbon is a fabulous city. Compact enough to get around easily. Great architecture, fascinating history and culture, friendly people fantastic food and a great vibe. What else do you need?
My patents moved from UK to General Toshivo in Bulgaria a few years back. It's right near Dobritch and Varna and also a short drive from Costantine in Romania. Bulgaria is a beautiful country, the people are so nice and when I first visited with my wife and kids the locals would often stop us as we walked by their houses and run inside for gifts for the kids such as fruit and colouring books. At the local bar we struggled to buy our own drinks as every time we went someone had already bought our next round for us! Nasdrave!!
Also the food out there is amazing! Free side salads with almost everything and they are a meal on their own! 6 of us had a 3 course meal for 80 lev which is about 35 gbp.
I really have been enjoying all your videos on traveling through Europe. I was born in Lisbon , military family. I spent my first four years there and am now thinking of retiring there. Full circle at all. And from there it's just a skip and hop to all those other wonderful places you talk about. I hope I can pull this off. Thanks again
My favourite city in Poland is Wrocław but I have been recommended to visit Torun. Dubrovnik is expensive and can get overcrowded when the massive cruise ships dock. Hope to visit Sofia, Bulgaria this year and get bus or train to Istanbul.
Belgrade in Serbia, Skopje in Macedonia, Bucharest in Romania and Sarajevo in Bosnia. Membership in the the EU has shot up prices for tourists. My advice follow the backpackers.
Athens isn't so cheap, but beautiful. Only the ticket for Acropolis is 20 euro, hotels in summer time are expensive. The best time to visit Athens is Autumn, or Spring.
Mapinguari it’s free on the first Sunday of the month. I saved SO much money visiting Athens and Aegina just a few months ago, in comparison to Paris, Rome, London, and Tel Aviv. Some weird things were pricey, compared to Berlin, but I found it pretty reasonable.

Been to 3 out of 9 (or 10) of your recommendations, not too bad! Just got back from Prague and Krakow a week again and they were awesome. We had a day in Wroclaw as well, which was a very cool place for a short visit.
Lisbon is amazing! The cobblestone sidewalks with the mosaic designs, Jeronimos Monastery, the Monument of the Discoveries, Barrio Alto, St. Anthony’s Church- love them all and the prices are very reasonable!
I went to Poland in 2015 and I loved it! The zloty (at that time at least, dunno if it changed) was valued at about 1/3 of a USD, but what was cool was the NUMBER AMOUNT for things was the same as US. So if a bottle of coke is $1.50 USD at home it was 1.50 zloty, but because of the conversion it was more like 50 cents US!
Nice video, thanks for posting. Looking forward to seeing more. Could you do some European budget tips for mobility challenged and seniors, including accommodations and eating please? I'd love to do as much of "The Grand Tour" as I physically and financially can, so I would encourage you to consider doing a series in that vein. It seems to be a wide open spin on travel genre that hasn't been addressed very well as of yet. Could get you a bigger audience!!! Yayyy... we're currently in Krakow - arrived on the 10th March 2020 and decided to stay when the borders closed on the 16th March... BEST DECISION EVER! I am in Belgrade, Serbia for a month right now for $245 and going to Sunny Beach Bulgaria for $9 a day studio with pool. These are for non Shenzhen folks looking.
Europe is amazing. I just have to find places to go outside the Zone several times a year. I am going Romania for July. It is out of zone too. CHEAP!!!
IMO Belgrade is an acquired taste so to speak, but Bulgaria is an excellent suggestion Angela. It is a largely overlooked destination, even though the country is serene and beautiful, the people are genuinely helpful and friendly, plus things are very reasonably priced.
I live in a small cute village 30 minutes from Belgrade. It is so quiet and reminds me of Slovenia. I had ambulance called on me in Nis last year for preaching. It was very funny.
@@richtervonihnagod7234 you guessed wrong,I live in Belgrade, one of most friendly people on the earth that will always help the strangers and tourists. If you ever come to Belgrade, visit Kalemegdan(Belgrade Fortress),Temple of St.Sava(biggest orthodox church in the world),Skadarlija(boem street full of serbian food that will suprise you, like cepavi, pasulj, karadjordjeva snicla..)Knez Mihajlova(main pedestrian street in Belgrade full of old buildings and nice cafes),then Church of St.Marko,Kosancicev venac(in my opinion most beautiful part of Belgrade, old buildings and nice neighbourhood)..
One good way to judge prices in European cities is to look up rental prices in AirBnB. The same $450 apartment in Bucharest may command $1,450 in London. Look up the monthly rental price as opposed to the daily rental price.
I don't know if someone else said it in the comments before, but one thing that might be interesting to add is that, Valencia (Spain), is very well known for its "paella". This is because this dish originally comes from this zone, even though you can have "paella" all across the spanish territory. This is not like that with the "tapas", that makes no difference between places in Spain. I hope this fact to be useful to somebody, and encourage Mark to keep making this enjoyable, friendly and quality content. Greetings from Spain!
We have just got back from Albania. What a beautiful country, welcoming people, and outrageously cheap. I maybe not the easiest to get to for budget flights unless you fly to Corfu and take the ferry perhaps.
I've traveled to Prague several times. Back in 2000 it was manageable, but now it's so incredibly crowded all year long except during winter. Spring months are overrun with school groups from other Euro nations. Lots of scams and shady characters in the tourist areas. Cabs scam tourists. I recommend Brasov, Romania. We rented a car and drove from the Bucharest airport. We didn't have time to visit Bucharest. Brasov is near the Carpathian Mountains and within a manageable drive to Bran (Dracula's) Castle and other cool sites. Great food too! My biggest regret is only spending 3 days there. Needed more time. I agree with Krakow. It's my favorite Eastern European city. Beautiful sites, great food, affordable, and friendly people.
i love your channel and how you are describing cities foods smiling all the time. You are great man with a lovely family. Take care Come to Greece more often.
Absolutely agree with you Mark! Honorable mention: Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Cheap cheap (and I come from a cheap country) with traces of the Yugoslavia's war(I personally like that), friendly people, the greatest preserved Ottoman architecture in Europe. Cons: it's not that easy to get there, it's touristic. But is a great cheap pearl!
Replace Dubrovnik for Kotor & Budva just short drive south in Montenegro...so much cheaper & a massive wow factor. Also I would place Ohrid in from 'Northern Macedonia'. Stunning and cheap as!!! Keeping it Balkan..y. Northern Serbia Subotica/Palic/Sombor has to be a better shout than Budapest. Not sure what Turkey is like today, travelled early 2000's and really cheap and unbelievably good holiday destination
Ljubljana, Slovenia is also a beautiful town and quite cheap. Well I think all of Slovenia is beautiful, it’s so small you can go mountain climbing and then swimming in the same day:)
Great video! We just visited Dubrovnik last week and loved it! We walked the walls, and we drove south about 30 minutes and found the coolest beach! We've actually visited and loved quite a few of these cities and a few others are definitely on our list!!
Sofia, Bulgaria belongs on the list. It would still be my favorite city to visit even if it wasn't so cheap. Gorgeous architecture from all the different periods of Bulgarian history, great food, the open air book market- all in a really walkable downtown core surrounded by parks.
I have been there and I loved every minute of it. Overall a beautiful city (despite having its share of run-down areas). Everything is inexpensive - the accomodation, the eating and drinking, the attractions, the transport. Well worth a visit.
I would add Bucharest, I found it super cheap. Especially food and accommodation. Very nice video! I am flying next month directly from Crete to Kraków. So cheap Ryanair flight! I can't wait!

This travel video was an amazing way to experience a new culture and explore a beautiful country. There was so much to learn and discover throughout the journey and I loved every minute of it! The video was shot in an engaging way that made me feel like I was part of the journey. Overall, this video was a great way to explore a new culture and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience something different.
Excellent advices overall. The key for the tourist to get a less hectic and more value oriented travel is to avoid those huge metropolitan areas in Europe, where it is always crowded and most tourists tend to congregate, thus competing for services, such as hotels, restaurants, museums etc. Also, it is in these places, where the danger of pickpockets and sundry tourist scams are the most acutely present. In a way, the same goes for capital cities most of the time. That's why I particularly loved the Krakow, Dubrovnik, Porto, Valencia suggestions. In this more adventurous spirit, I'd substitute Prague with Brün, or Budapest with Pécs, Szeged, or Debrecen.
Yeh Prague’s not as cheap as it used to be. Thanks to travel bloggers like you and honest guide. I was lucky enough to get out there just under the wire. But it’s over, now.
Great vid, and great to see places not nearly as oft mentioned as other European destinations. Been to several - Prague, Porto and Lisbon - loved them all. Prague was a nice, inexpensive side trip from Germany, which was already mostly fairly priced. Did Porto and Lisbon after a month in Spain back several years ago. Was sort of an afterthought - "hey, we're already in the peninsula, why not?" I really liked Lisbon, but (very walkable) Porto was the surprise of an action packed trip. Hoping to visit a bunch of the rest this year.

MAXIM, Holland Nederland, the Netherlands. What a pathetic attempt to squeeze in your unearned smugness and facile stereotypes. This is a TRAVEL CHANNEL, giving TRAVEL ADVICE, and you’re bashing him for purporting to “know everything”? What a child you are. And by the way, if you were to actually listen to the video, you’d hear that he was including several factors, such as immediate accessibility and his own personal favorite experiences. What’s more, Dubrovnik is very much a bargain destination for international tourists, even if locals know of a less expensive but lesser known local place. Seriously, the desire to respond by satisfying your sad stereotypes, however forced and embarrassing a manner, is truly pathetic.
All true about Tallinn. This city is breathtakingly gorgeous, filled with history, and inhabited my some of the kindest and sweetest people I've ever met.

It's certainly not the cheapest, but its definitely on par with other countries on his list. It's very budget friendly partly because its not a popular tourist destination.
Shhh! It's managed to avoid the flood of tourists and expats/digital nomads that other cheap European cities have gotten. Ljubljana is beautiful and the country ranks pretty high in international rankings for those that live there, ahead of the other former Yugoslavian countries.
Hey thanks for all your videos! I’ve been watching them non stop for about two years. I think it’s great you get to live this amazing kind of life but at least let us know what it’s like a bit!
Hello Mark. You're in my hometown! And you picked the perfect spot to film you're video. Definitely agree with this list, with one exception: Dubrovnik. I was there last year and it was really expensive.
Everybody knows about pierogi in Poland BUT there are so many other wonderful dishes in Poland you can try. There are plenty of really good, tasty, affordable restaurants in Poland, particularly in Kraków and also Zakopane where the menus are in English as well as Polish. My personal favourites in Kraków are Szalony Widelec (Crazy Fork) just opposite the posh theatre, for a more formal meal try Miód Maliny (Honey Raspberries) in Groźne Street or Kogel Mogel just by the small square as you're walking towards Planty. Also please try the cake shop, Lajkonik (Hobby horse). They do the most wonderful sandwiches, baps, rolls and cakes you could wish for and fabulous teas and coffees. In Zakopane there are lots of places to eat that do pizza, pasta, ribs and the local cheeses, but my favourite place was Góralski Pstrąg (Mountain Trout) which does the most wonderful fish dishes cooked in the most imaginative ways. Smacznego
I spent a week in Romania, Bucharest and Brasov. Bucharest has great nightlife for adults at the weekend. Brasov in Transylvania is beautiful and charming and more suitable for families.
Amish Ashcroft Albania is the land of sun and hospitality ! You can find in Albania beaches, lakes, mountens , archeologic sites, friendly people, cheap food and accomodation. Better to avoid August and Jyly. You can enjoy !
Can you do a video on which places in Eastern Europe are cheapest to fly to, as well as which Eastern European countries have a lot of vegan and vegetarian dining options? I eat meat. But I know other people who don’t eat meat or any other animal products. I also have been told that Eastern Europe is pretty much a hidden gem! Way less tourists and also a good option to look into for someone who doesn’t have a very large salary or just wants to travel on a budget and for a bargain.

It is. It's the most expensive city in Croatia. If you are going to stay there, get a BnB. Rick Steves does a great episode on Dubrovnik. Croatia is cheap in general.
Go during the winter.
Istanbul!! Loved it and miss it! Great food, great sightseeing, and I came home with so much money.
I haven’t been to the Baltics yet, but this list is spot-on! I’m glad to see Krakow getting some love as well as Portugal. I think Split, Croatia also deserves a spot somewhere on the list.
Split is disgusting
Baltics are awesome, especially during the summer month.
Visit Vilnius in Lithuania and you will be suprised by the beauty and cosiness, relatively cheap also.
Phillip.
I was literally standing where you are in this video, I visited Krakow mainly from your poland video about Krakow, and how cheap it is. youre a blessing!
thanks! i wish i could rock like you! My guitar skills are limited to 4 chord songs :) Caleb is already way better than i ever was at guitar
Four chords is all you need :D
Dubrovnik is so expensive! I rather would include Sofia, Bucharest, or St.Petersburg.
Been to Krakow twice and Budapest once. Love both and would go back in a heartbeat!
What "Constantine' are you talking about? It's CONSTANTA.
I'm in Porto again mark and it was watching your videos that made me decide to come here. I love it.
Awesome!
i love your concept of the best bang for the buck not just a cheap place that it is cheap for a reason ... thanks Wolter
Veliko Tarnavo in Bulgaria Is my favourite. Beautiful place and the people are amazing, so friendly and welcoming.
I agree! I like Veliko Tarnavo and Plovdiv way better than Sofia, Sofia is just dirty and a bit boring. Greetings from Hong Kong!
My two favorite cities in Spain are Seville and Valencia. They are community and family oriented with the town squares and the rich history.
@ok 01 . funny, I have the exact opposite opinion.
My favourite city in Poland is Wrocław but I have been recommended to visit Torun.
Dubrovnik is expensive and can get overcrowded when the massive cruise ships dock.
Hope to visit Sofia, Bulgaria this year and get bus or train to Istanbul.
Wrocław is just plain beautiful :)
Yeah I live in athens and I totaly agree. +The weather is nicer in autumn and spring
If you're studying in the EU you can enter to this places for free
Theres a pass you can buy for 30 euros that gets you into 20 different archeological sites/museum's. It includes the acropolis
@@peterj.andros3996 HOTEL Athena is centrally located. Good From its Rose rooftop restaurant one can have a birds Eye view of the city. GREAT in the evening
Been to 3 out of 9 (or 10) of your recommendations, not too bad! Just got back from Prague and Krakow a week again and they were awesome. We had a day in Wroclaw as well, which was a very cool place for a short visit.
I recomend visiting baltics, Vilnius in Lithuania, Riga in Latvia and Tallin in Estonia are not that big but nice, clean historic sities.
Lisbon is amazing! The cobblestone sidewalks with the mosaic designs, Jeronimos Monastery, the Monument of the Discoveries, Barrio Alto, St. Anthony’s Church- love them all and the prices are very reasonable!
Central Europe is simple: Old capital city with a great river and a castle hill. (Poland, Hungary, Czech Rep.)
You could be among the first, or maybe even THE first, to get a corner on that angle!!
Yayyy... we're currently in Krakow - arrived on the 10th March 2020 and decided to stay when the borders closed on the 16th March... BEST DECISION EVER! We love this city and were so fortunate to be in a country where the supermarket shelves were always well stocked... no toilet paper shortages here 😁 Thank you for another wonderful video! 🙏😃😀
Valencia is amazing, glad to see it in the ranking
I am in Belgrade, Serbia for a month right now for $245 and going to Sunny Beach Bulgaria for $9 a day studio with pool. These are for non Shenzhen folks looking.
Thanks for the heads up! I was debating it making the list.
Europe is amazing. I just have to find places to go outside the Zone several times a year. I am going Romania for July. It is out of zone too. CHEAP!!!
Where will you go in Romania? I recommend Sibiu, Sighisoara, Sinaia and some more. :)
You forgot balcanic cities, like Belgrade, Sarajevo, Liubliana, Sofía, Zagreb and Mostar.
Not a turist friendly cities I guess
Richter von Ihnagod they are very tourist friendly but some small towns might not be
@@richtervonihnagod7234 you guessed wrong,I live in Belgrade, one of most friendly people on the earth that will always help the strangers and tourists.
True , compared to Prague and Budapest the ones mentioned by you are a steal.
@@richtervonihnagod7234 I disagree as a matter of fact locals are more friendly in these countries than the list by Wolters :-)
Berlin? What a great vibe...Prices reasonable and no more than Prague.
Wroclaw in Poland is also very nice.
Why Belgrade is not on the list? It's so cheap for foreigners and even for citizens. You should go.
Greetings from Serbia 🇷🇸
You have helped me so much!!I put your videos on and do the treadmill.Your a life changer for exercises, that awesome..thank you!
Prague and Budapest are my favourites cities on earth!🇨🇿🇭🇺
Both are beautiful!
I am from Czech Republic and I am glad you like our city ♥
Thanks for letting me know that both the cities are on Earth 🌍
One good way to judge prices in European cities is to look up rental prices in AirBnB. The same $450 apartment in Bucharest may command $1,450 in London. Look up the monthly rental price as opposed to the daily rental price.
Prague is relatively inexpensive but Brno is cheaper still and has lots to see too, and beautiful surroundings!
Agree, Brno is great, pretty and on the budget
♥️
Morava
I don't know if someone else said it in the comments before, but one thing that might be interesting to add is that, Valencia (Spain), is very well known for its "paella". This is because this dish originally comes from this zone, even though you can have "paella" all across the spanish territory. This is not like that with the "tapas", that makes no difference between places in Spain.
I hope this fact to be useful to somebody, and encourage Mark to keep making this enjoyable, friendly and quality content. Greetings from Spain!
Dubrovnik is not cheap what are you talking about?
Cheaper than Paris.
@@indie8189 okay but what ISN'T cheaper than Paris?
@@aidanw9378 Tokyo and Vienna
@@indie8189 That´s right, but it still not cheap. Paris is much cheaper than Oslo or Zürich. Is Paris now cheap? No! Dubrovnik is expensive
@@davidtuttle7556 stupid!" Tokyo is very expensive
Been to Lisbon, now going again but with stops in Porto and Albufeira.
Yay! Portugal 2x; I may get some extra benefits from speaking basic Portuguese in the USA these past few years after all
We have just got back from Albania.
Great list! I can personally attest to three of them - Krakow, Prague, and Budapest!!
Informing us about the delicious food is my favorite part.
Agree
Sarajevo, Prizren and Ljubljana are so underrated. I recommend Prizren, Kosovo to anyone. It's so beautiful.
Was in Sarajevo the other day and is one of my favourite places!
Keep quiet about Prizren. Fantastic place and so few tourists.
Ljubljana, Slovenia is also a beautiful town and quite cheap. Well I think all of Slovenia is beautiful, it’s so small you can go mountain climbing and then swimming in the same day:)
Going to Portugal in June! Whoot!:)
Riga is so beautiful 😊 delicious food and cheap places where stay!
Yepp, Riga is one of my favorite European cities.
GREAT list, Mark. Will have to watch it again when planning our next European trip.
awesome! thank you.
Valencia is amazing. Perfect combination between futuristic buildings and classic buildings
@@butlerson , I did not know that they ban jewish people in Valencia, where Cani find info to verify that? I used to live in Valencia.

@@PS-uz4ep , I agree with you that all visitors are welcome. There is a history in the 14th century, of Spain kicking out the jewish people. It was during that time that Columbus discovered America and the jewish people, went into the new land.
Great list, my only issue was not putting in Vilnius, which is amazing. I would also add Gdansk, which is great! Lots to see and do there, and very affordable.
Prague & Budapest......beautiful cities. Will eventually get to the others.
Morgan Smiley both great spots
This travel video was an amazing way to experience a new culture and explore a beautiful country. There was so much to learn and discover throughout the journey and I loved every minute of it! The video was shot in an engaging way that made me feel like I was part of the journey. Overall, this video was a great way to explore a new culture and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to experience something different.
Athens is my favorite city ever. I've been to most European countries as well! It's such a phenomenal city. I'd highly recommend it.
Nice video, I agree, Prague is like been in Mexico, it’s inexpensive... Greetings from Mexico 🇲🇽
If you want to sample England on a budget, try Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds!

Slovenia is another great option!
If I had to move somewhere, I would definitely go to Slovenia. I was there this year and it was wonderful. One of the most underrated countries in the world.

Slovenia is amazing country but I wouldn't say cheap
It's certainly not the cheapest, but its definitely on par with other countries on his list. It's very budget friendly partly because its not a popular tourist destination.
Shhh! It's managed to avoid the flood of tourists and expats/digital nomads that other cheap European cities have gotten. Ljubljana is beautiful and the country ranks pretty high in international rankings for those that live there, ahead of the other former Yugoslavian countries.
I would love to visit ljubljana Bit the flights are too expensive

Hello Mark. You're in my hometown! And you picked the perfect spot to film you're video. Definitely agree with this list, with one exception: Dubrovnik. I was there last year and it was really expensive.
Dubrovnik is beautiful but it is one of the most expensive cities in Europe
Shane Owen they try to milk the tourist money they gained from GoT’s popularity
Is it? Because Scandinavia(especially Norway) and Switzerland are insanely expensive
