I hope this video helps you if you're looking for a way to draw side profiles for your characters. Too many art tutorial videos nowadays present only one right way to do things, and that's simply not true. There are exceptions to every art "rule." We need to start treating them as learning guides instead of absolute laws to live by.

As a mixed race person, I think what a lot of artists have to accept is that all sorts of people look all sorts of ways, and that all these rules are gonna not apply to someone. And even if you try to apply different rules to different types of people, you’re going to find people in that group who also break those rules and look different from how typing that group would suggest they “should” look.
I think, in art, we have to stop drawing what we think people should look like, and start drawing what people look like to us on a case by case basis.

Idk sometimes people just don't know how to draw us either that or they are scared. If your art has a specific style and or your used to something specific it can be hard to re wire how you draw. I draw A lot of POC people mainly because I am one. I am not critical of people who draw generally white characteristics/ stuff that doesn't look like me, I don't care because l do the same thing but with people of color.

The rules EXIST to be broken. Like the loomis facial thirds. Having some standard to keep in mind is how you notice what makes your subject unique.
It doesn't even matter if the standard is truly representative of the average person, so long as it gets you focusing on aspects of a face people are likely to notice the most.

      umm, yes he does…
_„They try to tell you it’s wrong“_
Let’s have a look at just the first two minutes:
At 0:46 he starts with an example where the guideline does apply, and only then proceeds to show with another example that it doesn’t apply all the time though.
After that he elaborates that guidelines are just that, that their purpose is merely to _„help you learn“, „to make it easier to draw your characters“._
_“They don‘t expressively tell you that there is nuance in proportions“_
      He not only _tells_ it:
10:11 _“That‘s why it’s not a rule and we can always go beyond the boundaries of these ✅❎ arttips.“_ He then goes on to criticise that there’s no more _nuance_ in this world and shows artworks that *are* more „nuanced“.
      But he also *shows* it:
He shows faces where the guideline applies, where faces exceed the chin-nose-line and when he draws his own face he shows that some faces don’t exceed or follow but actually fall short of the line.
„They […] cherry pick examples where it doesn’t apply“
That is not cherrypicking. He elaborated and proved that it sometimes works and then shows methods how more African looking side profiles can be achieved, for which he uses - surprise - African faces.

I'm happy that Sam stayed out of the drama and actually tried to teach us that drawing a side profile has no rules and easy ways how we can draw side profiles. as a person that struggles to draw side profiles these ways seem to actually be simple and understandable, i just want to thank Sam for being here to teach us and also for being so calm

This is why using visual references from real life are so important!! Relying on guidelines can be helpful, especially for beginners, but it can also get echo-chambery and risks making you stagnant in your art (ie you start assuming there are no exceptions to the guidelines and accept them as rules). Looking at real pictures will always force you to see details you wouldnt have considered, such as the nose/lip/chin ratio as shown in the video. Great explanations all around!!! I definitely learned something from this :)
