When I draw now, if I'm not drawing one of my OC's, i tend to just have a set of presets to choose from. The areas that are most important to make a character distinction (in my opinion) are the nose, face shape, and eyes. And once you learn how many variations there are it can feel very powerful

Sam, I want to say you’ve helped me grow so much with my art. I have learned so much from you and I’m so grateful that you have become like a mentor to me. Thank you Sam! 😁
Y'know what's funny, before you posted this video I've been getting out of my comfort zone and improving my art. Everyday I remembered and practice the tips you've taught me. Slowly getting my art back to being me, I lost myself with my art when I kept drawing everyday and just trying to post everyday. My art wasn't me anymore and shattered, so I took a break from social media as I knew it was getting serious and destroying my mental health and connection with art. Throughout this break I've been slowly getting back to loving art and allowing myself to make messy lineart and draw whatever came to mind. I'm a horror artist and I would have not expected myself to draw hello kitty one day and that says something haha but in all seriousness, this video made me feel less alone knowing someone else was doing the same thing. Watching you go out of your comfort zone inspires me so much and today I was not sure how I wanted to do my digital art but watching you just paint and do it in a messy way truly inspired me. I wanted to do that but thought only clean art was better but you made me realize art isn't about how it looks it's how it makes you feel. Followers, likes, shares don't matter. What matters is if art makes you happy and is something you can feel creative with. Sam, you've helped me with my art journey for the longest time and I can't thank you enough. Wither or not you see this, it makes me happy knowing I've told you. Much love, Mickoy
This is something i can relate to i have been in art block for 6 months and let me tell you that it wasn't fun i just recently got back into drawjng a month ago and it feels awesome to learn about art again

You're OC's beauty and characteristics will pop up more if they're surrounded by more natural, normal looking people. You don't appreciate a beautiful person in the middle of other beautiful people, but put them next to me.. you'll never forget about them. Or me. I'm ugly enough to hunt you in your nightmares. (And incredibly proud of it)
I’m glad that this was spurred from your twitter post! Not glad about the things some people were saying but glad that you realized, even tweaked your last of us work, and even a step further, put out a video admitting you’re still learning! I look forward to seeing your progress reflect in your future pieces! ❤
It feels really encouraging to watch another artist actually learn because people usually only post the stuff they're used to. I could never really finish your videos because of this, but this time I could see how uncomfortable you were, I think this is a really engaging video. Keep improving Sam!
Real!! Ive watched a few of his vids and I love his commentary + advice but I was confused as to why he didn't really change the features up a bit more. This video slays I love seeing big artists moving out of their comfort zones
This is so wholesome! I wasn’t bothered by your TLOU fanart that caused drama but I admire how you actually thought about the feedback (even tho some comments were inappropriate and pure bully), you reflected and now you are ready to learn something new and grow as an artist. This makes me very excited for your future art ♥️ very inspiring Sam
I like how Sam can show us how to develop as artists, as a content creator for UA-cam, and as an artist sharing his work, he’s my biggest motivator because he’s so good at getting his points across in an understandable way, and he’s my biggest inspirer because his art is always a scope into true beauty and technicality I haven’t yet mastered; even when he draws less desirable characters, it glosses my eyes in the art I see of his in face value, they’re so vibrant and lively and fluid with nicely done details. I just love what he does (best art teacher and best developer).
This is so nice to see !! There are so many different faces and features, it’s great to branch out like this and helps grow all of our art. I’m glad you addressed it like this Sam!
I like these sort of 'learn with you' type of videos :) I feel more normal still learning when I see these type of videos from an experienced artist so thankyou!
thank you for showing that it's okay to make mistakes along the way! it's important to trust ourselves as artists and help ease that need of immediate perfection. 💖
Glad to see Sam address this. I love Sam's old portrait drawings. His recent drawings are cute girls, but very one note. But even with the Same Face Syndrome, he still challenge himself with the background coloring...
I respect you so much as a content creator for talking about a place you are weak in and bringing us along for the journey. I really wish I saw more of this instead of everyone only talking about what they are good at. This sets a good example for us baby artists at being able to talk about places of growth. Thanks for making this sort of content! And thanks for inspiring me to work on things that I'm weaker in!
Dude, watching Sam try new things and different styles is just so cool and makes me want to draw. His last The Last of Us fanarts made me really love his style even more, its just so well made and beautiful.
So much respect for you and this video. It's hard to take the kind of "criticism" (I'm hesitant to call it that because a lot of it was vitriol) that you did with grace, let alone to accept it and embrace it and use it to learn and teach others. You've been one of my favourite artists for a while now, and this video is just another reason why.

You were able to not get down with all the hate that you were given, and listen to the ones that were giving constructive criticism to improve your work, you are a wise one, man. Congrats!
I feel like yea, every cartoon or animated show, series, movies or anything have distinctive features Tom differentiate them. My favourite is how the show total drama does it. The eyes, nose or any facial or body feature is recognisable within each character and they do it really well!

Love this topic! I highly suggest working on Fanarts if anyone is stuck with the Same Face Syndrome for their works. It used to be the same for me, but then I started learning a lot more about variety in facial features by drawing tons of Fanart. Later on when you get back to drawing your own original compositions, the variety you’ll notice in facial features while also keeping your own style will be a lot more prominent 😌❤️
I am a young Frenchman who is in love with drawing and these times with the advancement of AI I was afraid .... but seeing your video gave me hope and makes me want to fight and draw for me and others! I know you will not see this message but if you ever see it THANK YOU
What I've been doing recently is sculpting my characters in Blender, and even going so far as to render them, so that I have a 360° reference for my characters that I can go back to. They all have different facial features, structures, and skin types, so it's very helpful in not falling back into a copy and paste production line when you're trying to crank out a comic or project.
@@eemansuhail It took me about a week or two to learn enough about Blender to get where I wanted to. The first week I was close to giving up, thinking that Blender couldn't offer good enough quality work, so I began to think about ZBrush (sooo expensive). But I was wrong. I was watching Blender speed-runs of character art, and saw professional quality results. I had to ask myself, "Why isn't it working for me?" In the end, the solution was me having to understand and utilize the Dyntopo tool. So, my advice is to make sure you understand exactly what your having difficulty with so that you know exactly how to form your question. And yes, there is a specialized website for Blender users to ask and answer questions. Anyways, I also use Unreal Engine to design my worlds in 3D so that I have references and backgrounds at the ready for any comic/graphic novel work. It's really useful, if you have a PC that can run it, and some patience to learn the software.
I have very bad same face syndrome. After this video, I'm going straight to drawing an elderly person from a reference because I have no idea how to. I always draw teens or younger adults. So, my list of things to work on is drawing older people, animals, fixing my same face syndrome, and learning more on lighting because I've realized that I haven't been adding highlights and only shading. Nice to know that a lot of people also struggle with these things
i would love to see bigger/plus size people in your art style! it's great to see you using the criticism (albeit some are quite harsh) as constructive criticism and utilising it to improve. i suffer from same face syndrome too and this has definitely added to the motivation to change that. great vid!
Saw the title and instantly clicked! I respect and appreciate your efforts to make things right, and as well as talking about the problem and make it educational for us. You've been a great help to me especially for my learning process in art and I thank you for that. I hope you're having a wonderful day!!

For the first time (maybe in a while) Sam draws old people and not just beautiful people. I've been a fan of Sam in a long time and I always think that Sam have an amazing and distinct art style but also always think that he have this same face syndrome. Im really glad he's going out of his comfort zone to try different things and be better in making arts. I always thought that (as coleen said) "you should always draw beautiful people (and as reference)" is a bad advice and mistake, cause this will be some of the result if you only do that.

When I draw now, if I'm not drawing one of my OC's, i tend to just have a set of presets to choose from. The areas that are most important to make a character distinction (in my opinion) are the nose, face shape, and eyes. And once you learn how many variations there are it can feel very powerful
extacly, i do the same
I love how it still looks like Sam's art, even though it's different from what he's done before. What an artist. What an artist. 👏👏👏
its really nice to see people improve and grow, so I'm glad sam made this video :D he not only acknowledged his own mistakes but taught others to not make the same mistakes he did!
The feeling of having an art problem and seeing Sam post the solution is just ❤❤💖💅💕✨️✨️✨️😊💯
I never had a problem with his characters looking the same but I’m still glad he acknowledged it. Love you sam
I love it when artists are self-aware
This is something i can relate to i have been in art block for 6 months and let me tell you that it wasn't fun i just recently got back into drawjng a month ago and it feels awesome to learn about art again
i just love this type of art content, keep up
Really cool to be able to see the change in your work since this video, you can almost see the point on your insta page where things start to change, and you just keep getting better. Major props to you
That's not true? I literally was on his ig 30 minutes ago. It's still the same face, the same body type etc.
Draw as you want sam , we love you and your works!!
Love the way Sam so maturely handled the way people were acting.
I'm very happy to see someone so successful that see room for improvement and doesn't say "I'm perfect, because I have followers" like other ones ❤️
I really enjoy sam making this kind of video! Since he's fixing his own same face syndrome as it shows that professional artists with over a million subscribers can still face the same common issues that beginner artists face and I'm sure it can definitely inspire beginners who feel ashamed of having problems like this
You're OC's beauty and characteristics will pop up more if they're surrounded by more natural, normal looking people. You don't appreciate a beautiful person in the middle of other beautiful people, but put them next to me.. you'll never forget about them. Or me. I'm ugly enough to hunt you in your nightmares. (And incredibly proud of it)
You had me there😂😂😂
Good on you Sam, for identifying the things that are holding you back and sharing them with us. Its a good lesson we can all learn and grow from.
It's so cool seeing you challenge yourself and staying humble mate. Those faces you drew were fire and I definitely saw your style in them.
I can't get over Sam calling Jamie Lee Curtis "Grandma" the whole time! She will always be young in my heart! XD
im glad that instead of ignorance, you're actually trying to improve yourself and also helping others. good job sam!
I have a syndrome of changing art style frequently, nothing stays the same. Also I'm so proud of you Sam.
Glad to see Sam address this. I love Sam's old portrait drawings. His recent drawings are cute girls, but very one note. But even with the Same Face Syndrome, he still challenge himself with the background coloring...
after the recent commotions, im really happy to see you taking this step!! now im feeling inspired... exams first though,😅
Watching the very ends of his videos is becoming my reason for watching his videos.. that and the buttload of inspiration to draw ofc
im glad sam was able to take the criticism and try to learn and improve his work!!!
8:23 "you're gonna pick up your ipad right now, and you and i, we're gonna work on it together" 🥹 never have i been this motivated, THANK YOU SAM!
This is the best response to criticism i’ve ever seen on there internet. you’re my idol and i’m happy you listened to your fan base :)
Dude, watching Sam try new things and different styles is just so cool and makes me want to draw. His last The Last of Us fanarts made me really love his style even more, its just so well made and beautiful.
This was SO helpful! Seeing how you analyze the reference photos to change your process and challenge your habits is incredibly useful
This is probably my favourite video you’ve done! Really informative, down to earth, doing some studies. Really nice!
And your recent pieces are also some of my favourites of yours! Practice be payin’ off!
4:51 WHAA- * ad plays * and THE END!!
Omg finally. I lowkey got fed up with seeing the same face on your ocs/art. Was almost gonna unfollow his IG but now imma stick around some more to see the ✨growth✨
didn't expect you to do a character study on Deirdra and Evelyn from EEAAO but here we are. I love them
I just saw that movie yesterday on a theater that was celebrating oscar winning movies. Loved it. Weird, but I loved it
I have great respect for someone that takes harsh criticism and turns it into a learning moment that develops themselves and others :)
I've been in such an art rut lately but this video has actually helped inspire me to push through! Thanks Sam!
i absolutely LOVE seeing you draw these dynamic faces! its such a fun process to watch and I hope you make this a series because I rlly like this video
Thank you for the new art vid uncle Sam
No problem nephew
Not going to lie, some Twitter users can take it way too far with their criticism, tapping into insult territory. You took it all with so much grace and humility instead of feeding the anger cycle. Kudos to you 👏
You were able to not get down with all the hate that you were given, and listen to the ones that were giving constructive criticism to improve your work, you are a wise one, man. Congrats!
I'm very proud to call Sam my favourite artist. He took accountability and he didn't run away from his responsibilities. ❤
Even though the facial expressions look the ''same'' on Sam's characters, his artstyle will never change. (Sam's art style is beautiful)
I feel like yea, every cartoon or animated show, series, movies or anything have distinctive features Tom differentiate them. My favourite is how the show total drama does it. The eyes, nose or any facial or body feature is recognisable within each character and they do it really well!
hey sam i was kinda worried about you after i saw some tiktoks bullying u.... i hope ure doing good and remember that ure a talented artist who is genuine about teaching us art!!
It's so inspiring seeing you listen to and take valid criticism and then work on it and show you're capable of changing it up to better yourself. I need to get like Sam😭💕
It makes me happy to know that even art gods like sam make mistakes and it's okay to do it
Glad to see you took criticism the right way. A lot of influencers just focus on the bad faith criticism to excuse themselves from growing
Love this topic! I highly suggest working on Fanarts if anyone is stuck with the Same Face Syndrome for their works. It used to be the same for me, but then I started learning a lot more about variety in facial features by drawing tons of Fanart. Later on when you get back to drawing your own original compositions, the variety you’ll notice in facial features while also keeping your own style will be a lot more prominent 😌❤️
this is an incredibly mature response. thank you ❤️
I am a young Frenchman who is in love with drawing and these times with the advancement of AI I was afraid .... but seeing your video gave me hope and makes me want to fight and draw for me and others! I know you will not see this message but if you ever see it THANK YOU
I’m glad he actually took the criticism and didn’t get defensive, I love Sam😍🤞
I think observing the difference between the faces of your friends or family is also a good practice for avoiding same face syndrome
I think you making a video about that and realizing your mistakes is awesome
What I've been doing recently is sculpting my characters in Blender, and even going so far as to render them, so that I have a 360° reference for my characters that I can go back to. They all have different facial features, structures, and skin types, so it's very helpful in not falling back into a copy and paste production line when you're trying to crank out a comic or project.
i have been meaning to try blender for a while now. Is it difficult to learn? Like just for characters and n stuff.
I'm so proud of you, your attitude of learning from criticism although a bit harsh, you managed to come out on top and prove that you are a great artist
I always thought that (as coleen said) "you should always draw beautiful people (and as reference)" is a bad advice and mistake, cause this will be some of the result if you only do that.
i like how you handled the situation! i hope to see more various faces from you in the future 💗 also your energy is great, keep working man
It’s ridiculous how people just randomly started hating this man .
Glad you can have a very healthy outlook to having an outside perspective on your own art and seeing where you'd like to improve!
Glad you’re self aware
What
He took the criticism and apologised though?
@@remi4113 yeah that’s literally what being self aware is
I just love how you show and explain the things. You inspire to create 🔥
"even if you dont have same face syndrome, in which case I hate you" sam is the most relatable being on the internet
Please, people, refrain for commenting before watching the video. He already apologized, and he is showing how to break SFS and constantly recognizing this as a flaw in his art in this video. I think he worded his explanation with Ellie very wrongly, and he shouldn't have said attractive, but rather "appealing". I'm glad he is showing some growth by presenting his learning curve, let's have some good faith and believe him.
can we maybe get some bigger body tutorials / tips and darker skin ??
Sam I've been consuming a lot of your videos, mainly because I'm doing your DTIYS challenge, and I want to learn as much as I can, I follow and admire you for a long time but your videos have made me love you and your work more, thanks B)
i think ppl arent ripping on you for same face syndrome so much as ripping on you for "only drawing what you find attractive"
yea! especially since he drew kids the same way
@@mouse7355 right lmao if youre gonna say something like that then dont draw kids, period
@@womankisserjermaluvr frfr!
Can't see anyone mention it, I would love to see you doing the "100 heads"-challenge.
I really loved to watch you making other kinds of characters, even if your young girls are really pretty all different characters are so much fun. I never drew guys because I thought them were boring but now I love to draw all kinds of humans, I made a family of characters and it made to draw everyone.
dude got flamed so hard he changed his whole style
Masterclass in overcoming potentially harmful habits and handling criticism as an artist, using it to help you grow instead of lashing out or anything like that which people often do under that sort of pressure. Awesome work Sam
i didn't expect to see a video like this from you, ngl. but i greatly appreciate the initiative you've taken here, and i hope to see changes in your future art, where there's more diversity despite it still being your style
This is so inspiring. Someone like Sam where his style is so well known and beloved by most people, who are into art or not, still feels the need to grow and learn. I just wanna run to my sketchbook right now and work away thanks to this
Thanks Sam!
