    The thing that stuck out to me the very first time I ever played Planetside 2 (and PS1 before it, though it was the twilight of that game, so I never got to enjoy it at its peak) was that "it feels like a war."
    You step out from the spawn tube at a base and head outside, there's shells flying overhead from tanks bombarding the place, a friendly fighter crashes nearby riddled with holes from an enemy ESF. There's twenty men manning a wall ahead of you, two of them on turrets with heavy machine guns, blazing away at an approaching column of enemy infantry supported by light armor. A Dalton roars down onto the wall and seven of the soldiers there collapse, and medics hastily patch them up, but the gap in the firing is exploited by a pair of jump-jet infantry rocketing up onto the wall with shotguns blazing, taking out most of the men on the wall before being taken out. You're almost to the wall, when you hear the ripple of a Vanu cloak, and a silenced SMG slices through you, and you fall. Tracers chase the cloaker as he sprints for cover. You've respawned, and head to the wall again, only this time you see the men manning it have leapt off and are heading off in pursuit of the fleeing foes. You grab a Sunderer, pick them up on the way, and drop them off at the next base over, and the ad-hoc squad quickly takes control. A friendly armored column visible in the distance sends in a rolling barrage on enemy tanks attempting to dislodge your foothold, and the exploding wrecks encourage your little squad to push on to the next base. You meet stubborn resistance, but the friendly tanks from earlier deploy in support, and a friendly gunship flanked by a pair of CAS fighters roll in to provide cover while you hold. In the distance, you see a flock of enemy aircraft, maybe thirty or more, coming your way...
    Those sorts of moments are what I remember fondly from the early days of PS2. Before the Lattice, before Redeployside, even before player base building. It wasn't like jumping from lobby to lobby in any other shooter game on the market, it was a grand battle on a grand scale, and it didn't feel like pointless matchmade fights. I'll be honest, I even miss the times before the massive, all-powerful Zergfits started sweeping up hundreds of players and throwing them all at little fun fights just because an alert was on. I miss not having these massive bulldozer outfits pushing me and the rest of the kids out of the sandbox because they had a little too much sugar that afternoon. I miss having that meat grinder that had to slowly push across the map to take land, not the current norm of "94+ enemies held onto a 10x20 room for 3 minutes, so you just lost a mile of territory and have to fall back two miles to hold onto the next 10x20 room." The magic of the old days has felt like it was simply missing for a long time now, but it's been refreshing to see a bit of that coming back. It's been heartbreaking to have a great fight going on at a base, maybe 30-40 friendlies fighting a similar number of enemies, just to have a hundred players drop in from a Zergfit and push us out, then vanish, and when we push back to retake the point, we find out that the hundred players already stacked the point at the base behind us, making our fight completely moot and forcing US to redeploy. It's not fun, it's a chore, it's a hassle. I know the game wasn't perfect before the Lattice system, but I honestly feel like it was the start of a lot of the problems that have come about since then.

    I reinstalled the game with the release of this update. I first played the game way back when it originally released, and whilst I played it for a short while at the time, it didn't take long for me to move on to other games as per usual for me. Over the years since, I came back occasionally to retry the game - I remember the updates for Hossin and Oshur distinctly as they drew me back in for new locations. However, I can safely say that this is the first time I've felt committed to sticking with this game; and that I'm really enjoying it.
    There were great moments before, sure, but this update seems to have broken the mould for me. I couldn't quite put my finger on why, until I saw this video. I realised I've had several similar experiences to what you've described, and it's probably the most fun I've ever had with the game. There was one fight recently in particular, on Oshur, along one of the outer lines. A large group of us had pushed through and captured several territories, destroying bases on the way, until we finally met some strong resistance. We started losing, and getting pushed back, and I found that others had built up bases along defensive positions in all of the bases we had captured 30 minutes earlier. Eventually we regained the power to go on the offensive. The battle continued for ages and the lines constantly moved back and forth.
    It was a real treat to have this moving battle, whereas historically battles in Planetside would be over within a few minutes (or stagnate and go nowhere), until eventually all would fall quiet, and you'd inevitably have to deploy to a different battle on the opposite side of the map. That still happens of course, but it's now more likely for battles to continue naturally, like my recent experience, because of this update.
    10 years on, and this game is still improving. Great stuff.

    As someone who just came back to the game recently, a little primer on the new features of the latest round of construction would be wonderful. I can't find any good videos that talk about things like the modules, or what the new buildings are.

    I`ve been playing planetside since the first game out then watched that die with low pop servers, then played PS2 at launch and watched it`s ups and downs and the last weekend was delightfully surprised with good fights, its a noticeable difference

    Remember to put spawns in the construction bases even if they have some already. You can put down an elysium spawn tube, rebirth center and command center to allow for different spawn angles when enemies push in the base. Also, pull vehicles from bases to counter enemy vehicles. Fun to be had!

    in my recent nighttime playsessions, lowpop oshur wasnt terrible, the new middle base is quite nice but it also has fields around that get planted with fortresses and it generates a "giant" 3 way battle even with only 20 people on each side

    Probably the only way building will last against vehicles would be to make them almost invulnerável with durability modules, but as soon as the module is overloaded they will be easily destroyed like its now

    It's feels like Levelution. Everyone was saying this would kill the game and construction but I was just thinking about that north village on Golmud Railway that turns into rubble five minutes into the map but it's a blast still

    The game's definitely entered a new era with this update. It's still got all the old rough edges, but there are types of fights happening now that just weren't happening before, even when I played into late night Monday, which is always the time when population craters. The construction base fights were smaller and not as chaotic as the weekend, but they still had something to them that wasn't as linear and predictable - I'm seeing increasingly in the low-pop scenario that players will give up on the idea of a speedy base kill and accept some back-and-forth infantry play instead, and that's actually a really good sign that it's working as intended.

    While I haven't played PS2 for many years, it's great to see it's still going regardless. Was good friends with one of the game's concept artists (Ukitakumuki), and we had a blast playing as the TR when we weren't chilling as Vanu on the Oceania/Aussie server. Can't for the life of me remember when we stopped playing but things have certainly changed in the last decade. x_x

    It's insane how many new players Emerald has gotten in the past few days. Hopefully they're enjoying themselves and continue to play. I think the construction bases fights have been pretty decent. More darklight spotlights built into the already existing bases would be nice. Just as a solid "fuck you" to the rats who main infiltrator.

    This is exactly what I wanted to accomplish with my Delete Dev Spawns pitch. Let us build the spawns, and fights will just flow between the logistics we create. This is a great step.

      What do you do when there are more people looking to destroy spawns than build them? What's the solution to low pop when there isn't enough players to build spawns and create natural fight flow?

      Just build it again. Defend it.
      The second question seems lazy. You can easily build spawns yourself.
      As for the "Flow" of combat... Its low pop. Low pop has no flow.

    *I find Esamir bases are insane fights. Can see them from miles off but they can also see you miles off and react* Also we know a great HELIOS set up but not revealing until nerfed.

    once durability is tweaked i'll probably be pretty happy. I liked being able to interact with the enemy base as infantry dramatically more than just shelling at a wall as a vehicle. Even as a base builder it feels a lot more fair for infantry to actually invade rather than grouping of tanks just shelling me from across a hex lol. Overall, I think this update definitely made construction dramatically more fun for the attacking side, but I think it should get some work done on it from a defensive stance.

    Big thing with construction engagement is the fact that it still requires the presence of players that have splurged thousands of certs on unlocking all the relevant structures and a squad of helpers feeding them cortium fast enough to reactively build a base on a lane before the enemy zerg just rolls on to the front gate of the next base.

    Bring back AI modules, have it only slottable on AA/AV turrets.
    Bring up resistances of construction, give all buildings passive repair.
    Turn the flail into a support weapon instead of dumb damage-only artillery, let it use multiple ammo types like havok, nanite heals, EMP, repair, etc, let it fire into devmade bases.
    Give us a special building that's basically a self-contained outfit armoury that lets the owner build and deploy ANVILs/shields, etc out of high cortium/cooldown cost.

      The AI modules were toxic crap, one of the main reasons why no one wanted to fight infantry in player bases. It's not fun to die in a split second from a literal aimbot. If you can't defend the base on your own, you should consider making friends.

      @@xWHITEx And that is why I said for it to only apply to Anti Vehicle and Anti Air turrets, NOT Anti Infantry.
      The whole "infantry playspace" part gets negated when you can roll bases over with armor/air balls.

    Construction need buff for sure 100% over the weekend we would valk around killing cortiom silos just deleting bases by killing the silo… even with it having squad defending them. Silo Hp buff hugely neeeded

    I just played oshur for the first time this past week (may 2024) and it immediately became my favorite continent. It's more focused, the frontlines are more clearly defined, and there's a really nice flow due to the custom bases. I'm no pro or old player (br 20 some time in 2015, never played since) so I don't understand a lot of what's happening but it's okay cause I feel like a pawn in a war. Every man's dream lol

    As someone who's Auraxed the Helios twice so far.... it really needs a bit of a balancing pass. It seems that the primary fire is bugged, given the Hipfire and ADS spread is the same, and the alt fire is just.... busted.

    Awesome update on the gameplay from Fortification! I wish life would stop dunking on me so I have time to play it! I'm glad it is giving those huge back and forth conflicts.
    You mentioned beefing up the health of buildings and structures. I had a thought pop into my head here as I put on my game dev hat, would it help to make bulwark walls different than regular walls by making them almost immune to tank and rocket rounds, in exchange for making them much weaker to c4, cortium bombs, and AT mines? If the problem is tank shelling from a distance, allowing you to have real tall refuge walls to block tank shell spam might further encourage this awesome back and forth behavior? Or is this too drastic?
    Either way, keep it up man!

    all the points you made about construction are really accurate and would make the game 1000 times better, the no deploy zones are TOO big and the new constructions are too easy to kill... one more thing, the turrets now are kinda useless if there's not many ppl on ur base your base its easy to get invaded

      for the turrets thats kind of the point the bases need to be defended by the faction, not just the builder/building outfit, on the other points i agree

    Really enjoyed so far building bases with other unknown players from one silo, espe ially since I do not have all the buildings yet.
    But yes, constructed bases give fluidity, hotspots of fighting and sieging (although I wish the walls would not be taken down sooo quickly so infantry has to push more instead of letti g armor and artillery do the work

    I have to stop you there on the the flail. I had to use the flail at sunken relay just so our forces could push and it wasn't a big Force, it's just the area around that map was way to open a very no man land. I can understand the frustration with a guy who's just invisible launching darts. But having to try to find cover an area where snipers or just literally popping you just for moving from one rock to another it's far worse than that flail. If you want any kind of compromise I would say remove the repair module and make that default on all structures and add the sky shield on the walls so that you're either having endurance or protection from flails but not both. Also just so you know they did find me. If there had to be any kind of real change in classes infiltrators need a cool down when they go invisible and reappear the whole peekaboo thing has annoyed me.

    The secondary spam fire sounds alot like the Plasma grenades from PS1....literally spashy blue fire..which also gives DOT if your caught on fire for few seconds...Woth narrow corridors and indoor 15 min caps it was the ultimate area denial weapon and the Thumper could fire them also.

    The ONLY issue that I have with the construction is when the players who are building drop a wall or whatever, and your running through just as they place it. You get stuck in the wall. This has happened to me more than 4 times this past Saturday. Because your stuck in a wall and it’s still “in transparent mode” you sometimes can shoot out and get shot. I was both shot at and killed, also shot out from inside the wall and accused of cheating. Even though with the big battles sometimes you forget “oh I’m stuck in a wall” just scrambling to find cover. Anyway that’s the only issue I experienced. I hope that others will come forward as I have, so this issue can be addressed.

      You need a graphic card with Directx 11 support for PS2 now. ~4 years ago PS2 worked on old cards with Directx 10.

    the only reason the fight continued is because there were a ton of people on the server at the moment, and everyone wanted to try the new construction buildings, so every single piece of realstate was already fitted with construction, this is temporary measure that will dry up like what happened to oshur. Also thanks for telling the devs to defang construction, now were back to 1 single infiltrator just getting to a base and blowing it all up without issues. You made construction a bigger waste of time for construction players.

    I had some truly great fights this weekend in the new fortifications. The people complaining about them seem to be the type who only view them as ":I can shoot them until they blow up so therefore that is the point of them and that's boring" crowd.
    But I suck at the game, so IDK.

    It is really do not take much to make this whole thing work
    *Shrink down* No-Construction Zones, tune down all form of artillery (OS, Flail), increase survivability of building and later on add more open-field bases
    Just another little step, but with a much greater potential

    I would love to see them do more marketing and maybe sponsor a couple big streamers that can bring their communities to the game alot of big names think the game is dead which just simply isn't true the core gameplay loop is feeling really good I think of would pay off more for them to run some more advertising and marketing for a while to let new people know of the new balance and game play features

    While I have been having a lot of fun with construction, the flail spam is just obscene. One cloaker with a flail can destroy an entire base, spawn camp a sunderer, or just make an entire area inaccessible. Nobody likes being farmed continuously by artillery, it makes people hate construction even being in the game, at least OSs have a relative cooldown but not artillery.
    They need to seriously address it. Make the shooter blink like the sun, make it not affect buildings, limit the damage on vehicles, or bar it from certain classes. Something! Because right now nothing spells the end of a good time than 1-3 people playing their point and click strategy to free certs.

    FYI Cyrious..as a viewer, watching the background fighting in night scope as you narrate is not the greatest viewing experience for 15 mins. 5 or 10 maybe. yea I'm nit picking lol, but true for me. Otherwise thanks as always for the valuable intel!

    I know this is a random comment that has nothing to do with the subject of the video but the voice at 12:30... is that from EVE Online? Sounded like "autopilot jumping". Is that recursion doing that? I had to rewind and make sure I wasn't imagining it. EDIT: It is from EVE Online, please ignore this question. Heard it again later. Think that's from before they changed the voice.
    Also, I had a good laugh when you killed that cloaked infil while using infravision and it came up saying "repeat customer" XD Not the stealthiest player there.
    Finally, something weird happens about the 14:50 mark dude, looks like this part of the video repeats itself and goes back to an earlier point in the battle.

    Why do you recommend smoothing off? It helps with input lag when it gets too hectic and mitigates the thing with the firerate being tied to FPS. Especially relevant for the TR

      It bottlenecks your CPU even more. This game is already very heavy on your CPU. The last thing you wanna do is bottle it up more.

      @@BrainBurnStudios Nope. For most people it will do the opposite because it’s that much more the CPU has to take care of. Only for extremely high-end setups will it actually improve anything.

    I am sitting here like a big ? wondering what the construction nerf had to do with the fight being the best you have had in PS2.
    Nothing in the video really has anything to do with the changes, people could already build bases with spawns in them before just as they did here. Give it a week, month or whatever and we will likely be back to pre-update levels of construction bases... hopefully, because the alternative is that we have fewer due to them being unable to defend themselves.

    TBH the forts being useful is just a by-product of the new update period. when the directive is finished, construction will be abandoned again. Except this time there will be less left overall, logi bases will always be around because artillery, routers, no nanite cost for vehicles. Once frontline bases are no longer given the necessary life support of the event directive, they will disappear. I doubt entirely but it may become "shrouded ghost" level rarity for more than 1 expertly made frontline base per faction to exist.

    Flail and OS spam needs to be fixed - kills all momentum of gameplay particularly if you're getting into MAXs.

      Smoothing limits your frames and adds some input latency. Sorry I shouldn't say it so blanket, on lower end systems it can help. But lots of people are running higher refresh rate monitors these days and smoothing can limit the frame rate and make it feel choppy.

    this games servers hit reg and invis smgs make it straight up not fun for me used to enjoy it in about 2017 on ps4 for a while but other than that its awful
