1:38 Notice how Sigma steps away, knowing full well that Mr. Halpen won't shoot. The transformation is nearing completion, and there is nothing to fear any longer.
Funny thing about this episode, the Doctor didn't actually do anything. This one time, he and Donna were just witnesses. The Ood revolution happened around them. They were willing to help but really they just got shifted around in the tides of events already transpiring, and in the end they allowed him to flip the switch they could just as easily have done themselves. I don't know why they gratuitously thanked him at the end. All he did the whole episode was run around and get repeatedly captured.
TheFounderUtopia maybe they thanked him for supporting them? I mean, it's no secret that once the doctor disagrees with something he puts a stop to it. Maybe they thanked him for not opposing, and inevitably stopping them from doing what they intended to do.
He was the first person who had shown up in god-knows-how-long that didn't treat them like disposable trash. Yeah, he didn't free them, they did that themselves. But once they were free, they remembered those few who treated them like they were worth something. It speaks to the inherent gentleness of the Ood. They praise those who are just nice to them. Think of the phrase "those who wear their heart on their sleeve." This is a species who offers their brain in their hand. They offer good thoughts willingly to those who would accept them.
They thanked him for doing what he does best: Run around, talk a lot, and pull all of the attention on to himself. It left them free to finish what they had started. He was their distraction.
"Natural Ood must never kill, sir." That's actually a very chilling statement. Not only because of how calmly Sigma says it, but because he states that they have no intention of killing him, so they have something far worse (by Halpen's standards) in store for him.
A decade later, I still love how Donna reacted to this. About how she said she doesn’t know what’s wrong from right anymore when she is with the Doctor, and he replied with the perfect answer.

Think the point was Donna and tennant showed them compassion from the start to the very core of saying friend of the Ood others saw them as slaves or property the journey end the ood came back in his dieng moments as a friend to friend moment a really heartfelt moment
As some people pointed out. The Doctor was a great distraction for the Ood. He also disarmed the bombs that were gonna destroy the ood brain. He also treated the ood with rare kindness and compassion, and didnt get in the way of their revolution. He might not have led the revolution, sure, but the Ood clearly feel grateful for what he did do for them.
This entire sequence is what got me into Doctor Who, funnily enough. This episode is by and far my favourite of what I've seen, and also was one of the first I watched. Some call this sequence disgusting... I call it art.
Of course, not all Humans treated the Ood as slaves as not all Humans are assholes like Haplen. Still, the villains WERE Humans, just not all Humans. Haplen and his lackeys give the rest of Humanity a bad name. I'm definitely on the side of the Ood here as slavery is an evil institution that Humans have fought other Humans to put a stop to.
I wish Donna and the Doctor would have, you know, contributed more to the outcome of the plot. Really they were just specators, the Ood did all the work.
I think that was the point. He cant always be the one saving everyone all the time. I think he relize the only way they could be truly free was to do it them selfs

This scene was truly horrific to me a child, i miss this era of who.
Golden era of doctor who
I remember on the vanilla release of series 4 volume 1 for dvd the 12 certificate said "includes one gory moment" and I thought "I wonder what it could be?" This scene stuck with me.
Brilliant episode! One of mine favorite episodes in series 4.
What an actor though, round of applause for this man.
One of the few times when humans are the obvious main villains of the story and the few times when the villain suffers a fate worse than death
Idk why... but this episode just brought back so many feelings... like all the episodes compressed into one... the feels
"He's an ood."
"I noticed..."
Don't be *revolting*, Darling!
I wouldn't lick an ood if he was glazed in honey!
Out of many Modern Dr.Who I’ve seen. This was a great and shocking scene. I’ve always Loved David’s Performance.
2:05 you can tell right there that even the doctor was shaken by what just happened
I think the Ood is my favourite species in the series. Their both disgusting but incredibly cute at the same time.
This was a good episode - it's a shame that the Ood gave a load of credit to the Doctor and Donna when the Ood created their own freedom.
Think the point was Donna and tennant showed them compassion from the start to the very core of saying friend of the Ood others saw them as slaves or property
the journey end the ood came back in his dieng moments as a friend to friend moment a really heartfelt moment
Well the doctor did break the circle
As some people pointed out. The Doctor was a great distraction for the Ood. He also disarmed the bombs that were gonna destroy the ood brain. He also treated the ood with rare kindness and compassion, and didnt get in the way of their revolution. He might not have led the revolution, sure, but the Ood clearly feel grateful for what he did do for them.
The ood design is so good and unique.
It brings tears to my eyes... So beautiful.
I just realized that the song they play at the end of this is the same song they play when taking the Earth back home
Ah yes, the scene which was the fuel for 70% of my childhood's nightmares
This is why I'm too scared to re watch planet of the Ood...
This entire sequence is what got me into Doctor Who, funnily enough. This episode is by and far my favourite of what I've seen, and also was one of the first I watched. Some call this sequence disgusting... I call it art.
This bit is and was always soooo traumatising, but the music from the old afterwards, always cures it
I didn't even realise that Halpen was Tim McInnerny, AKA Captain Darling!
1:52 Baldurs Gate players biggest fear xD
Is it weird that I watch this over and over
Ood need to be a bigger part again, like they were in this season of the show. They were awesome.
Guess he takes the word 'kill' em with kindness' to the whole new meaning 😂
That transformation could have been even more disgusting and terrifying...let's be glad they decided to go with this.
3:49 they formed a new circle . this is beautiful
I cant help but draw comparrison of Ood to illithid. The tentacle mouths, the telepathy, the big ass brain hivemind.
Writer is a dnd fan probably.
“and then there was patience” is such a good line, and what a poetic justice this was
2:33 the doctors face 😂 I can’t
One of the most iconic scenes in Doctor Who history.
This episode was amazing! So was the rest of series four! Not one bad episode. I miss Russel T. Davies and his fantastic writing...
The doctors daughter was shit but thats about it
I liked the Doctor's Daughter
Series 4 and 5 were the absolute peak of DW
Not the daughter's doctor imo
I miss Russel T. Davies being able to write fantastically
So it's like Ceremorphosis in a way. Only differences is that no tadpoles are involved and the Oods are mostly chill, unlike the Mindflayers.
2:02 he's barfing spaghetti!
Its strange how merciless the doctor is being right now and I love it
This episode was amazing. The villain for once wasn’t the aliens. They were the victims this time. The villains were humanity enslaving the Ood
The Ood are the most interesting alien race of the whole series
1:54 - 2:08
Family friendly
Yeah Right!!!!
Who said this show is family friendly
Looks family friendly to me.
the doctors face through the transformation was priceless
It’s like he thinks it’s beautiful.
A great episode! Would love to have an Ood as companion of the Doctor for a few episodes.
I'd love to check in on the Ood again and see how their civilization has grown. Love an Ood.
It would be nice seeing the Ood again.
This was a brilliant episode.
I played Baldur’s Gate 3. This looks like Ceremorphosis. The Ood are mind flayers
The ood will always be my one of my favorites.
Love the Oods ❤ One of my favourite episodes. They just ones peace and harmony.
I wish Donna and the Doctor would have, you know, contributed more to the outcome of the plot. Really they were just specators, the Ood did all the work.
Well, you can't always be the cause/resolution to a problem. Adds more variety to the show rather than Doctor shows up and fixes the problem.
I think that was the point. He cant always be the one saving everyone all the time. I think he relize the only way they could be truly free was to do it them selfs
You think The Doctor is part of every solution ever?
This kind of thing probably happens thousands of times across the universe, without The Doctor present
Their sympathies with the Ood were what they needed, the psychic boost for their will to freedom.
I love the Doctor's and Donna's faces at 2:04. I'm in stitches! XD
I thought it quite respectable that they were still willing to take care of him instead of shunning him even though he was on of them at this point.
One of the most surrealistic and beautiful scenes.
That music in the background is in the end of time
This is so freaking close to what a mind flayer colony looks like
This has to be one of the darkest fates in Doctor Who history
Still one of my favourite episodes and 10th Doctor and Donna Adventures
Forget the face transformation, literally everything about this man is now an ood. Just think on that for a second.
And we thought doctor who wasn't dark back then
I like how they're holding hands and singing like Cindy-Lou Ood and all the Oods in Oodsville
I Love doctor Who so much 😁🤗
who doesn't?
I see what you did there.
When they sing...they always make me cry
ah that were the intro of BG3 COME
Man got tadpole'd. "Power courses through you, authority"
Imagine getting succ off am ood
*The* greatest scene in NewWho, hands down.
I saw this scene when I was a kid, I have been thoroughly traumatized.
This episode went form creepy to beautiful in a couple of seconds
Man I should start watching this show again
