The Steam Deck has been hands down the best gaming device I've ever owned. I've had my LCD one for almost 2 years now and have installed over 400 games from almost all the old gen consoles from SNES up to PS3. Hell, I was even able to emulate Windows 98 so I can play games from when I was 6 years old (I'm 36 now), games that I never thought I'd even see again, let alone play again. It's crazy what this thing can do. If I were to upgrade to a Steam Deck 2 OLED, that would probably be my last gaming device, and I would only want that one to be able to play more PS3 games and FF7 Rebirth when it comes to Steam eventually.
Deck is good. I will buy another when resolution gets 1080, mostly for field of view in same games. And I need an easy dual boot, some mmos are windows only.
Do you have a video you used to install these old games? I’m pretty new to emulation, and I just bought my first Steam Deck. I’d LOVE to play some old games from childhood too!
How did you emulate Windows? I can play pretty much all my childhood games, including The Sims 1 (I'm one year older than you), but the one game I have troubles with is Gangsters 2. It's now a freeware game, I try installing it through Lutris but I always get the SystemChecker notification and then the installation stops cause it's unable to check the system. Do you think there's any solution to this problem? I love my Steam Deck. It's everything I've ever wanted
Steam deck is your grand dad that is well versed in everything although he's not the best, but you still think he's the best because he shares everything with you.
I find it hard to blame the Deck hardware when the newest AAA games don't run well. Generally most of the games are unoptimized to begin with and don't run great on full desktop PCs too
Ya my pc is solid and theres several games i have that just run poorly for the hardware i use. Alot of modern games just dont run well its sad. The fact this handheld device can even launch games like cyberpunk and red dead show how solid it is. There is honestly no reason for a game to not be able to run on that at 30 fps on decent settings aside from a few rare instances.
just got my steam deck oled 2 days ago and I'm more than satisfied. Most of my games average 30+ fps on high setting + the emulation capabilities are just sooo good!!! Great video:)
I got my Steam Deck earlier this month, and have been loving it. Only about 50 hours of gaming so far (35 of which being my first Elden Ring playthrough). The main reason I decided to buy this, over a regular desktop computer, was the simplicity and the console-like experience. I’ve been playing exclusively on PC since around 2011 when I made my Steam account, and while it is my preferred platform for gaming, I’ll admit that I am still utterly clueless when it comes to understanding PC components. I have tried - I have made a legitimate effort - to learn about parts, but I still struggle with it. I still have no idea how the hell you tell the difference between different models, or figuring out how good something is compared to a game’s recommended specs on its store page. That’s why it appealed to me: Valve took all of that hassle away and allowed you to be able to play games on PC like you would a console. The Steam Deck isn’t simply a PC in the shape of a Switch, it is a device built and formatted specifically _for_ video games. And that just works better for me.
I’ve been wanting to buy a Steam Deck for so long! I’ve watched all of your Steam Deck videos some of them more than five times lol. I finally got a Steam Deck OLED last week and I still can’t believe I have one. Every time I see it I can’t help but say It’s huge or It’s beautiful! Thank you btw for making these awesome steam deck videos.
Got my LCD Deck July ‘22. Had some amazing times with it but also for months didn’t pick up. But this last year it’s been my go to console/PC due to the Xbox/PS streaming apps (non official) within my house. I cannot stop buying games off CDKeys for less than a £5. It’s become my addiction 😂 Just sold my 512 LCD Deck last night and today the LE White arrives. The extra battery is a must and the OLED screen will be an even better experience. Never thought at 45 I’d be hand held gaming More than my consoles/PC.
Same here. I pre ordered the OLED on Oct 2022, got it sometime after, bought one game for it and never picked it up again until last month of this year. I’ve been replaying RDR2 on it and im addicted. I have a switch that i dont pick up and i have plenty of games for xbox and ps5 that are still in the shrink wrap. The Steam deck has actually revived my love for gaming. I play it 75-80% of the time now when im gaming but on the times im not , im actually going back and playing those games on other platforms again. I ordered the LE white version of it and should be getting this Saturday 🤞. Im also waiting until black friday to pick up a Anker power bank so i can play while at work ( i get a lot of downtime 😂). Good luck with yours
@ I’ve just been playing RDR2 for the last few weeks as well. Bought it on my Xbox One X. And hardly okayed it. The Steam Deck sale last year for £8 had to be done but still sat there not been played. What a game and the SD is the perfect couch handheld. My Switch was turned on for Zelda but got bored with the building elements tbh. Now it’s again not been turned on. I still pant my consoles and PC but the SD has the majority of my time. On long flights it’s mega. Enjoy it pal and a man after my heart
I've been debating for the last few days and looking at all the pros and cons and this video literally solidified everything. That was very important to me and deal breakers. So I guess a steam deck OLED is the way I'm going to go. Thanks for this info
I was considering getting a Steam Deck, and even though it was cheaper than the Ally X, I still went with the Ally X. I like having the extra power available from the X, the compatibility from Windows without needing to pay extra for it, and I can still get everything from a Steam Deck by installing Bazzite. I upgraded to a 4TB SSD anyway, so I have more than enough room for an extra OS.
I bought the lcd at launch loved it, bought a rog ally z1 extreme and that thing was garbage absolutely hated it so bought the deck oled and love it just like my lcd deck.
When you don't really own ROG ally extreme I have lcd steam deck and bought ally extreme.. games work better just look how monster hunter wilds beta works and lags for steam deck stop with your lies steam deck is old and having a hard time playing new AAA games, the only suck with rog is battery life.
Just got my first Steam Deck OLED on Monday and my goodness is it worth every penny. The fact that everything from the OS to the way it plays games is just amazing and i can't wait for what Valve has in store for its next iteration of the Steam Deck.
Bought my OLED deck a month ago with some hesitation never owning a handheld console before. Honestly, I love it. The customisation options are great and pretty straightforward. You can tinker as little or as much as you want. Imagine how good it will be when the hardware is updated.
How's your OLED's battery health doing at this point? Rarely see what people say about their battery capacity percentages after a year or so of playing on it.
Just looked at my battery health. its at 100% with the last charge being 51.97 Wh. 1.97 Wh over the 50Wh the deck is rated for. after 11 months of use. i wouldnt really worry about the battery with the oled. been using it every single day charging it randomly when its between 30-60% and also keeping it plugged in for hrs and using it as a secondary display while i work.
I have a thousand dollar pc but it's remained untouched because of the steam deck. Something about sitting anywhere in the world I want and playing a game I love is amazing.
i got my steamdeck last month, its been the best gaming purchase ive had for a while, and ive bought almost everything i can get my hands on, im going on a long trip in a few months, and thanks to the deck i will not miss any monster hunter gametime with my boys!!
I got my Steam Deck almost 4 months ago, and no lie, I’ve probably played (and bought) more PC games in that time than in the previous 4 years. It literally saved my love of gaming. Also, on the battery life front, it’ll still give me a solid 4 hours on a big newer game like Hogwarts Legacy. PS2 emulation will give me 8 or 9 hours, and older games 10 to 12 hours. I don’t play for that long at a stretch (anymore lol) but it’s nice to know I could
I found this video because I don't know if I should buy the SD OLED or an Ally Z1 Extreme, despite all the drawbacks from Asus. I'm a fan of Monster Hunter franchise and I play Fortnite a lot with my friends, but I want to play the insane backlog that I have in my gaming accounts, specially Steam and Epic Games, but sometimes I ditch my gaming PC after work because I'm tired.
I have a sizable steam library that I just haven't gotten to simply because I can't play my PC in the car or on the toilet. I've debated holding out for the Switch 2 and hope the games are available on there, but I'm seriously considering treating myself to a Deck this Christmas.
You had mentioned in previous video hit older AAA games. Just for a vague idea you’re talking 2022 and prior games would run at decent settings and high fps ? Also are controllers connectable to a steam deck and use this connected to a screen ?
Got this for a few specific games that I never played but have wanted to for a while: Sekiro, Disco Elysium, Tyranny, Cyberpunk and Talos Principal. This thing is pretty much my only spare time between a being a single dad, working a job and writing my own stories to hopefully show my son that dreams are worth chasing. It fits in my backpack that I carry around everywhere anyways. Customization and battery is just very impressive. And for me Nintendo doesn't have shit on Valve, both as creators and entrepreneurs, so the Switch was just never even a thought for me. The only thing I don't have is a high res display for the docking station, but all in due time.
While I can agree on almost all points and when I got rog ally x with 4Tb and dualboot, I can't imagine myself going back to my SD -.-. I understand that that's somewhat more money for rog +m.2 but man oh man, is that a beast!
@@markaznar1979Or an even better desktop. 3 totally different form factors. I have a high end Desktop, I bought the Ally X for travelling and for times when I didn't want to play game on a desk. I honestly don't see a laptop as a portable device so not sure why so many compare a laptop and a very portable device like the ROG Ally.
Ok the iFixIt partnership pushes me right over the fence. I gotta get this thing! I love how consumer friendly Valve tries to be over the competition. That really means a lot to me personally.
Just returned my ayokuhn and ordered a steamdeck. I play apex legends and this wasn’t working well with the ergonomics of the handheld. It is nothing like my victrix proBFG controller and It looks like the steamdeck will fit better. I ordered the 1tb model and will update again for you guys. Follow my channel for upcoming videos, thanks!!
@@sam.alexander.reviewsThat depends if you only play games on Steam, if not the SD is way more complicated than Windows to get other store games running. Tbh I hated SD desktop mode, I bought a SD LCD at launch, I having played the thing for over a year, to many things I just don't like about it. It has a alot of annoyances to me that consoles have. Way to much focused on Steam for my liking, I prefer that open garden.
For a first handheld, Steam Deck Oled is still the best choice or should I choose Lenovo Legion GO Or Rog Ally? I have many games on many platforms, not only just on steam. And would like to play ghost of tsushima or black myth wukong.
Literally watched a hundred videos trying to decide on not just buying a SD but should it be a steamdeck OLED (money isn’t growing on trees near me), should I buy a used deck off kijiji? And should I finish my switch backlog before even considering the purchase!? Also - with a steam sale likely days away and knowing I’ll be buying a deck (I’m not remotely married to Nintendo) should I create an account and look for sales!?
The Steam Deck is a great Handheld PC. But I still believe the Legion Go and the Rog Ally are better handheld PC's. But that's just my opinion. And I had all 3 Handheld PC's. And you still can't play every Steam game on the Steam Deck. Games like COD 6 Black Ops won't work on the Deck because of Anti Cheat. But great video.
I'm going to pick up a steam deck soon! Unfortunately I can't afford the oled or an actual good laptop or pc, But the LCD Model seems basically the exact same besides battery life and the screen
If someone can help, I've been wanting to get a steam deck for some time now and I think I will but it may be the 512gb version, will that storage capacity be an issue or is it easy to expand with a memory card? im a casual player
I'm saving money so bad to get myself a Steam Deck OLED next year. Wish me luck. I don't know but everytime I turn on my PC, I just wanna work and often get distracted by things around
That's the sad thing. It's not a technical issue at all. It's pure politics on wether or not the publisher feels like supporting it. Practically every anti cheat works perfectly and easy with proton. Games like Halo MCC, battlebit remastered, elden ring, dead by daylight, and vampire the masquerade bloodhunt to name a few. It's just devs refusing to support it. Which is a real shame. Valve put in the work for these anti cheats to work and they definitely do. Many Devs just don't care sadly.
Windows Modern Standby strikes again!!! Also the fact that you said a windows device is for tinkerers and a Linux device ‘just works’ is a wild place for the world to be.
The Steam Deck requires as much tinkering as any other PC handheld. Any games you want to play outside of steam requires tinkering. If you need to change versions of proton to get a game to work, that too classifies as tinkering. Its actually easier to navigate Windows Desktop than Steam OS desktop.
The dichotomy of the American consumer. "The hardware and performance of the Steam Desk isn't the best! I want a refresh every year!" vs. "I love that developers can pre-deliver settings for their games because they have a known target to optimize for. It makes the gaming experience so much better!" Valve: "We hear you and yes the SD will get a hardware refresh about every 5 years. You're welcome!"
Does it matter if the Deck isn’t as powerful as other handhelds? I don’t really see why we need to be able to play EVERY single game on PC when there are dozens of interesting games coming out at an insane pace, the majority of which of which run perfectly on Deck. Much less the thousands of incredible games that are already out. The Deck changes your priorities in the right way IMO. The Switch has also shown this bigtime: just make the right games available in a great package, and you’re good to go.
I really couldn't care less about power when all i play is old af games and the binding of isaac anyways lmao. I'll buy a Steam Deck not only cuz it's super reliable and a good replacement for my old laptop, But also because i have a ton of trust from Valve as a company in general. The only gaming company that has never let me down, on my own experience
the example given bout PS joystick replacement and steam joystick are very different and irrelevant ... valve not providing the owners the ability to replace the joystick would be bad for them cause that would mean someone has to pay hundreds of dollars on another steam deck as oppose to spending 60 or 70 dollars on a new controller
Not KING this thing has LOW PWM which no reviewer talks about it causes fatigue and eyestrain, many on reddit commenting about this,I had one ended selling it because it's the culprit that causes me low on energy...
the ally x and legion go have a lot of sales at the moment- cheaper than the deck oled in the UK. The steam deck 2 cannot come out soon enough, the z2 extreme will be out next year which will leave the deck in the dust
I have the LCD variant good for other games but with AAA games specially the new one I play it mostly on my Rog ally extreme the regular ally sucks don't even buy that.
You actually hit on a weird issue. Why don't devs make a Z1E profile? All the major handhelds use it. Yet they preset for the outdated steam deck that is literally one device.
@@playnicegames Yeah that makes no sense. The Ally and the Legion Go use the same hardware. So it's basically the same thing as steam deck only a lot better.
Also I have been trying to make up my mind. I bought the switch years ago, and I’ve been disappointed with the game selection. I’m older I just want a good experience I can get lost in… often Plus the constant hmmm 🤔 bully tactics or closed hand tactics of Nintendo gets annoying. ASUS and its horrible representation towards its consumer base… it seems valve is playing the long game. I like it. It’s what we called back in my parents day I scratch your back you scratch mine. Mind made up. Valve for the holidays. Probably
If you haven't bought a Steam Deck yet. Don't. I could not in good conscience recommend someone buy a Steam Deck if they want to play modern day games on it. In 2025, I predict, at most, half of AAA titles released that year will run on the Deck. My recommendation is buy the Ally X or wait until the next revision of PC gaming Handhelds.
stop using over 4gbs of vram and STOP using AA 0 reason to kill your battery up to 2x as fast... what lasts only 1 hour and a half, can lasts up to 4 hours...
For most this is true b/c you are spoon fed content, but the results are diminished. The ceiling is low. All the work is done for you. It’s almost the only option for console gamers who show up & know nothing about pcs & how operating systems function. But you know what they say. I took the road less traveled & it made all the difference. There is stuff on the market better than this. No just a little better, but way better. As if the dream deck is a Nintendo switch vs other things that are like ps5 pros.
Fair enough but for someone who doesn’t want to spend more than I need to, which one is comparable and plays well with Steam catalogue and doesn’t have Windows 11? Genuinely asking because I’m trying to decide.
Or…the steam deck is perfect for people like me as well, who already have a beast of a gaming pc and just want a companion deal for it. I play all the AAA games on my pc but I can go lay next to my wife and chill on the steam deck. I had a legion go and hates it bc I don’t want to optimize every game for casual content
While that is true, I feel like the Steam Deck is the best value for your money though. You'd have a hard time finding a gaming PC for $400 at the same performance.
you do realize that steam deck games are universal right? And if you had a handheld gaming windows pc & a windows laptop that you could share the storage in which those steam games are installed upon with no extra downloads? You are burning through god knows how much money to install all those games on separate micro SD cards so they can play on a steam deck & then whatever you pay for storage on that windows pc when you could have 1 piece of storage for every device you own. I do have a steam deck, but w/ windows installed, & I have a legion go & a one x player & 3 Aya Neos & a V3 tablet. That’s 7 devices but all you need is one storage device with Steam games installed on them & you can share it with all 7 of those devices. It’s really a poor investment if you own any windows pc device to also rock a steam deck with Linux.

For the money you spent, you could have bought a decent laptop which can play games even better
Personally, hardware ain't an issue, (its pretty damn powerful) Id like to see more games made with the steam deck in mind, like the Switch.
Totally agree, we need more games specifically optimized for these kinds of devices!
Valve is like the no.1 company who know how to treat their fans and customers with respect and love we deserve.
I got one coming I got the 1tb oled I’ve been doing research and I’m excited
Ok the iFixIt partnership pushes me right over the fence. I gotta get this thing! I love how consumer friendly Valve tries to be over the competition. That really means a lot to me personally.
Ayaneo kun vs steamdeck? If you have experience with both please let us know your thoughts.
I bought the ayaneo kun and had to return it. The ergonomics are not good for hardcore gaming
Should I wait for steam deck 2 or just buy the 1tb oled one?
i have a video on exactly that! check it out :)
@ alright, will do
Wouldn’t you say the ASUS ROG ally is better tho ? Specs wise?
hardware wise, yes, but its more complicated than that because of software implementation
If you are a tinkerer and wants to play triple A games on it get the ally x. If you only care about indies or old game you can go for steam deck oled
Revived my love for gaming after being done with stale consoles
Literally watched a hundred videos trying to decide on not just buying a SD but should it be a steamdeck OLED (money isn’t growing on trees near me), should I buy a used deck off kijiji?
And should I finish my switch backlog before even considering the purchase!?
Also - with a steam sale likely days away and knowing I’ll be buying a deck (I’m not remotely married to Nintendo) should I create an account and look for sales!?
and I've been considering to buy the deck for this year's holiday
Ordered mine last night and waiting for it to be shipping 😭
Super easy to expand with an sd card, and you can get multiple and swap them out
Have been thinking of getting one now that I am working evenings and can’t play black ops 6 on my pc.. if I can get 1-2 hours a night.. I’d be happy
The Dualsense Edge is a completely different controller to the standard Dualsense btw. It's a lot more expensive.
I'm saving money so bad to get myself a Steam Deck OLED next year. Wish me luck. I don't know but everytime I turn on my PC, I just wanna work and often get distracted by things around
Good luck with that! Hopefully you'll be able to get one!
@sam.alexander.reviews Thank you, I've saved your videos to a playlist. So that I can config well before play
The problem is, issues with games like cod and the anti cheat. Hopefully something changes soon so it can compete with the Ally
I cane here cuz i just discovered the PlayStation portal stupid question is the steam deck worth getting?
That's a great question, it really depends on what you're looking for in a handheld.
I really would like one but because it's already 3 year old tech I think I will wait for the next one
Windows Modern Standby strikes again!!!
Also the fact that you said a windows device is for tinkerers and a Linux device ‘just works’ is a wild place for the world to be.
Technically you can tinker a lot with the desktop mode and decky. It's the difference between forced tinkering vs optional tinkering
The Steam Deck requires as much tinkering as any other PC handheld. Any games you want to play outside of steam requires tinkering. If you need to change versions of proton to get a game to work, that too classifies as tinkering. Its actually easier to navigate Windows Desktop than Steam OS desktop.
i would also add that reselling steam deck is much easier compared to windows hand helds, if you got tired of yours
After installing Bazzite on my LLG it's the absolute best.
What game was he playing at 0:21 in the beginning of the video?
world war z :)
Still love my LCD after a year. I'm scared to see an OLED now that they're finally released here in Aus in case it makes me want one.
I kinda wanna get an OLED but I feel like it's obsolete already :/
Sold skins on cs2 worth 1000 euros. Think I might order a steam deck
The dichotomy of the American consumer. "The hardware and performance of the Steam Desk isn't the best! I want a refresh every year!" vs. "I love that developers can pre-deliver settings for their games because they have a known target to optimize for. It makes the gaming experience so much better!"
Valve: "We hear you and yes the SD will get a hardware refresh about every 5 years.
Sold my lcd steam for a legion go. Now I’m selling the legion go for an oled version. It just wasn’t the same for me.
I want to keep this console but I can't play on 7.4 inch I need 8.8 like Lenovo
Ohh now I want one!
I wouldn’t be surprised if they let you change the battery and cpu one day
I really couldn't care less about power when all i play is old af games and the binding of isaac anyways lmao.
I wasn’t aware, thanks for the comment!
the ally x and legion go have a lot of sales at the moment- cheaper than the deck oled in the UK. The steam deck 2 cannot come out soon enough, the z2 extreme will be out next year which will leave the deck in the dust
that misaligned screen protector is giving me anxiety
Steam Deck Oled is King
You had me at right to repair
I have the LCD variant good for other games but with AAA games specially the new one I play it mostly on my Rog ally extreme the regular ally sucks don't even buy that.
I'll wait for apple and sony's handheld , coming soon
You actually hit on a weird issue. Why don't devs make a Z1E profile? All the major handhelds use it. Yet they preset for the outdated steam deck that is literally one device.
Cause it one device (Steam Deck) they support it.
@@playnicegames Yeah that makes no sense. The Ally and the Legion Go use the same hardware. So it's basically the same thing as steam deck only a lot better.
Kernel level anti cheat sucks 😢😢😢
Nah, i prefer bigger screen and stronger hardware device like legion go.
Also I have been trying to make up my mind. I bought the switch years ago, and I’ve been disappointed with the game selection. I’m older I just want a good experience I can get lost in… often
Plus the constant hmmm 🤔 bully tactics or closed hand tactics of Nintendo gets annoying.
My recommendation is buy the Ally X or wait until the next revision of PC gaming Handhelds.
why do you look like Jacksepticeye older brother ?
Very subjective
Does no one have the issue with headphones buzz anymore? I just bought one and I has this issue. I guess I got scammed
Is ight
oh shiiiit space marine at 19 to 20+ frames XD hell no
stop using over 4gbs of vram and STOP using AA
0 reason to kill your battery up to 2x as fast... what lasts only 1 hour and a half, can lasts up to 4 hours...
steam deck for life (b ' ' )b
Ally x is better idgaf
You’re not fooling anyone, Nicepool
It’s really a poor investment if you own any windows pc device to also rock a steam deck with Linux.
its not a handheld tho its too big and ugly.
Keep telling yourself that
do you hold it in your hands?
Have you held one lol
best slowest habdheld with lowest screen res. 😂😂 its museum tech now
Umm the switch is old and was never able to run any 3rd party game well ... Steam deck can
