    These two are the best wingfoil teachers I have found on the internet. I have used them at every stage of my wingfoil learning. At a certain point, I looked around online to see what else people were offering that might help me progress. I was amazed at the amount of unhelpful, ego-driven "instruction" out there. Teaching is an art. It requires a lot of thought and understanding of how progression works. You don't just pontificate on the beach for awhile and then show some videos. STRONG appreciation for Christian and Karine for this excellent series. I am on the foil and very happy!!!!---Rod on Maui

    Wish I'd seen this very informative video before I went out the other day. I'll definitely be starting with my front foot up next time! If you've got any watersports experience you can learn on a weight +30L board but be prepared to spend a couple of hours working out points of balance, etc. I went from "how do I even kneel on this thing?" to "OK, we're trundling along quite nicely now" in about an hour. I'm 61yrs and 81Kg on a 110L board with a 6m wing. There is hope for everybody!

    My first try was in Dingle, Ireland a few weeks ago. Bullying instruction, a big slop and unreliable wind led to a very challenging few hours. Did a lot of upwind ‘walks of shame’ in freezing surf.
    Learnt a lot more from your video and now have my confidence restored. I’m buying the gear and will follow your guidance.
    At 75, I look forward to years of exercise and pleasure.
    Well done. Many thanks.

      If you're Kerry based then Ventry Bay (Dingle) or Scraggane in Castlegregory are worth checking out as they're relatively flat water, castlegregory has quite a few winging now whereas you might be flying solo in Ventry

    This is an excellent video. I'm already a fairly decent windsurfing foiler and I wanted to give the wing a try. Everything in this video helped me. At first, I took a lesson using my own foil board. I ended up way, way downwind and my instructor had to rescue me. For my next session (without an instructor), I tried borrowing a friend's large, beginner oriented windsurfing board with a center board and tried again. The larger board was much easier to deal with and I did much better, but once again, I ended up downwind repeatedly and had to paddle upwind multiple times with the wing dragging behind me. It turns out that paddling straight into the wind with the wing dragging behind you is not as easy as you might think, especially if any distance is involved. The next time I go out I'm going to a place that has a long beach where I can walk my gear upwind in shallow water rather than paddling. This video mentions the importance of staying upwind, but it's not easy when the board is drifting downwind FAST whenever you're not actually in the process of sailing upwind. When you're kneeling on the board, flipping the wing, trying to get oriented, etc., the board is practically screaming downwind. My advice to any beginner reading this is to find a place where you can walk upwind easily, or have someone else available with a boat, jet ski, or paddle board to tow you upwind.

    • @CKPerformancetv
      @CKPerformancetv 2 роки тому

      Thanks David, and sound advice. Depending on conditions, having the mast and foil attached can offer a surprising amount of resistance.

    • @dairyairman
      @dairyairman 2 роки тому

      @@CKPerformancetv Yes it can. As an experienced windsurfer I was surprised at how fast I was drifting downwind when I was not actually flying the wing. I guess I'm used to the windsurfer sail lying in the water, which acts as kind of a sea anchor to prevent you from drifting downwind quickly.

    • @dairyairman
      @dairyairman 2 роки тому

      Since my disastrous downwind drift sessions I've discovered a couple hot tips for staying upwind that are touched on in this video. The first tip is to not go out if the wind is really light. By really light I mean less than 8 or 9 knots. If the wind is too light, the wing will not fly and it's practically impossible to do much of anything, let alone stay upwind. Assuming the wind is reasonably strong (10+ knots) the next hot tip is to look upwind a bit while you're flying the wing. They mention that in this video and it's true. If you twist your neck forward and look a little bit over your front shoulder so that you're looking upwind, then that will help.

    Well done! Complete wing lesson right here.. one thing to note is that is that a nice big board to start with is ideal, like a windsurfing deck or a paddle board. Getting your center of gravity over and centered on a smaller volume board on rocky water poses more of a challenge. There just needs to be enough wind to brace against in the wing when standing.

    Great tips. You make it look easy but using the wing as a point of balance is essential. The other trick I learned is to Punch The Water - when the wing dips and gets dangerously close to touching the water, punch down on your sheet hand (counter intuitively) and that pops the wing back up over your head. Works like a charm

    I am an advance windsurfer and intermediate kite surfer.. (Of course SUP often too😁). I just started learning wing foiling and this clip helps especially getting on the board. Thank you..
    For non-water sports folks though, I would recommend 40 L more than your weight at minimum (even preferably 50 L more) rather than 30-40 L more as explained in the clip. I and other windsurfer friends were able to stand up on a board (40 L more) on the first day after practicing wing handling on the SUP for a few hours. However, it took all of non windsurfer or non SUP friends a few days to stand on the board although many of them were lighter than windsurfer & SUP group(?)..

    You always stand up on both legs before trying to move upwind. This need already a good balance, which I don’t yet gain.
    I am learning on a small lake and I am rapidly pushed to the shore with only little water depth. I do some paddling to get back upwind, but I loose this ground just to move up on the board and place my first foot. Then I struggle to move upwind with only 1 foot on the board and get stuck near the downwind shore.
    What are the tips to ride upwind with one foot on the board, or is it just very difficult for a beginner ?
    I have tried the well known tips : looking as much upwind, pushing the wing back and quite vertical at the limit to catch water but the best that I get is to not loose ground.
    Do we need to have the front foot more heel side, or to move the foil to the rear, or something else to improve , and let me time to have a better balance and move up on my second leg? 🤗

    Thank you for your very useful video. I’m presently focusing on the way to move up on my rear foot. I am not sure of the way you do! Is it the rear foot which pushes up or is it the rear knee which does it (in addition with the wing push up )? Does the knee leave the board after the rear foot so does it need to absorb the force during a small while, so being perfectly centered at this moment ?

    • @CKPerformancetv
      @CKPerformancetv Рік тому +1

      Hey Nicolas, ideally use the wing and your front leg to stand, However, you can push down through your back foot to help lift your back knee:)

      @@CKPerformancetv my main issue is the lake where I am learning. The wind is very unstable, and may move from zero to 20kts!
      Due to so I cannot always wait the next gust to stand up and my board 110L is quite unstable for a beginner ! So I am trying to find the best way to stand up (the second leg) without the help of the wind.
      I use help from the wing on the water for the first foot as you shown, but the second leg is more tricky. The best option I found is to put the rear knee exactly on the middle of the board, and my rear foot on my toes, at the exact position of its final position when I will stand up and turn on toes plus heel. With this position, I can push properly on my rear toes, lift my rear knee, and turn my rear foot without unbalancing the board sideways .
      During this action I keep the wing over my head as much as I can without wind.
      I also manage to keep a good balance between board front and rear by balancing my body on my front leg then adjusting when I will stand up.
      Does it make sense or do you have a better option?

    Thanks Christian and Karine, this is a great pragmatic instructional video and easy to follow! I have a question regarding the lenght the wing foil board, I'm 6"...in your opinion what would be a right length size for someone like me (getting into the sport)? One store I visited told me 7' or 7'6" however, I think it is too big to maneuver and pumping

    Buonasera. Innanzitutto grazie per i vostri video, volevo porvi un consiglio: sono un principiante, ho un poco di esperienza con windsurf, secondo voi va bene una tavola cabrinha X-flay 6'2'' litri 111, quale foil mi consigliate. Peso 70 kg per un'altezza di 1,78 cm. Grazie anticipatamente

    great tutorial! thanks a lot.
    How do you place your foil? I have heard that you place it up front at the beginning and once you know more you can adjust it to the back. Any tips on that?
    tomorrow will be my first day in the water with my wing

      Without wanting to sit on the fence, middle to start with, gives you choices either way later on. Lots of variables at play, but at first you want to be able to keep the board down, which can be harder if the mast is way forwards. Hope it goes well.

    Great video thanks! A must-watch for the learner.. concise, insightful and clear. I'd recommend a waist leash for the board. Looking forward to part 2!

    Excellent…no pumping to get onto the foil?. Just head slightly downwind to build up speed?….sounds good.
    My issue is in my head! I don’t head anywhere downwind. Obsessed with keeping upwind. Too much history of learning to kitesurfing I think.
    Maybe that is where I am going wrong……

      Hey Simon, wind dependent, just bearing away in light wind won't be sufficient! Next episode is all about getting up on the foil...

    Hey man,
    Great info ,you convinced me to start. From your experience, what size wing do you think would be good to practice on a SUP and transition to a foil? I'm 5'11 70kg. Intermediate surfer.

    • @CKPerformancetv
      @CKPerformancetv 2 роки тому

      Brilliant:) Really depends on location and conditions. Best bet is to speak with your local shop and they can advise on size and design. Something around 4m or smaller will make it simpler off the foil, anything too large you're likely to catch the wing tips and find it a tad cumbersome. Enjoy!!!
