2000-2005 Impala (8th Gen) Ignition Lock Cylinder Replacement

  • This week, the Fred-centric content continues unabated as our 2004 Impala has developed a worn Passlock sensor, rendering the starter inoperable for 10 minutes. The symptoms of a worn Passlock sensor rear their ugly head when you turn the key to start and instead of the starter turning over, nothing happens and after you release the key the SECURITY light flashes.
Watch along as I take the dash apart and replace the ignition lock cylinder.
I purchased a new lock cylinder from eBay that already has the "recall" keys included (if you've had your Impala recalled due to the issue with the ignition key, you know what I'm talking about.) I chose not to purchase an entire matching set (ignition, door, and trunk) as I certainly don't mind carrying around another key. And TBH, that extra key is redundant as long as the key fob works.

It may take up to 3 tries (30 minutes total) to get the PCM to recognize the new key.
    This is the procedure:
Insert the key and turn to START
Release to ON when vehicle doesn't start, and leave there for approx. 10 minutes.
Watch the cluster for "SECURITY" to stop flashing.
Turn to START release, then switch OFF
    Turn to START again.
If it doesn't work, continue to repeat the procedure. The PCM will eventually recognize the new key.

I have been trying to program a new ignition and key all day long on my 2004 impala and then I came to your instructions. Others say don't go to start but go to the on position. Well that didn't work but yours did when you said go to the start position first. Three attempts and started right up. By the way I had a flashing security light and when it went out ( six to eight minutes) I turned the key off for about 10 seconds and back to start and release again. Thanks for saving me.

This is the second time i tried this method; I tried it yesterday with no success. There is a very important step that i had overlooked.. make SURE that the vehicle battery is holding good charge! I ended up having to buy a battery charger to maintain the charge level, and about 45 minutes after i got home from the auto parts store, I revisiteded this method and my wife's Impala fired up without a hitch! @@CertifiedShadetree Please make a video to depict this..... These instructions are for the 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala (Eighth generation) Turn Signal Cancelling Cam replacement. Once you use a PowerBuilt Streering Wheel Removal Set RENTAL from AutoZone to remove the steering wheel, after you removed the airbag, then you must use "snap-ring pliers" to remove the snap-ring from the Steering Air Coil Kit GM part # 26089982, 26088931, or 26092622 aka "Clock Spring". The next step is that one must use the Lisle 57340 Steering Wheel Lock Plate Tool and a small vicegrip to compress the turquoise/emerald spring, which pop the "Lock Plate Ring" GM part # 05694191 up from the lock plate. You can use picks - mine were from AutoZone - to move the lock plate ring from the lock plate... Once removed, then you'll be able to slide the "Turn Signal Cancelling Cam" GM part # 26086061 off the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247. You must be very careful NOT to disrupt the connection of the "Bearing Spring Set" GM part # 15231641 and "Bearing Kit" GM part # 26001827 from the "Upper Steering Shaft" GM part # 26064247.

@@notyourbusiness1850 Sounds like you're describing how to tear apart an old "Saginaw" steering column from a 1.5 Gen W-Body! I'm not sure the 00-05 Impala even has a lock plate in the steering column, as the steering wheel doesn't lock when you shut off the ignition.
My other question is, why do you need to replace the cancelling cam? Out of all the possible items to shit the bed inside the column, the cancelling cam is the one item that's the most durable!! If your signal lever isn't cancelling, it's most likely the switch that's shot, not the cam. At least in my experience anyway...

@@CertifiedShadetree I am not sure that it is a an "old "Saginaw steering column from a 1.5 Gen W-Body" or not.... I'm sure that it is a 2005 Impala (Eight Generation 2000-2005) and that it does have what people have told me is a "lock plate" and "lock plate ring" in the steering column. Although, the GM diagrams and part list don't show a lock plate.
I can send you pictures and/or video if you contact via Facebook.com coachapbrantley.
I actually didn't need to replace the cancelling cam until I broke it trying to replace it. A Chevrolet dealership outside of Detroit, Michigan told me that it was the only part that controlled the horn. A Chevrolet dealership in Norfolk, Virginia seconded that opinion. However, each were wrong... The Turn Signal Cancelling Cam does just that... It was the "clock spring" - see above for the GM part name - that controls the horn, if your horns are working properly.
I asked someone like you to do a video of how to replace the Turn Signal Cancelling Cam, because it is the final part toward removing the Upper Steering Column Bracket and/or Housing; and will show people how to remove the "Clock Sping" which controls the horn... It seems that I'm currently stuck per the shaft at the sphere --- bearing seat, et al seems to be out of place aka "sunk in"? Perhaps someone knows what I mean and/or can post a video. I can share some images with you if you want to help.
I'm being affirmed that "If you want something done... you gotta do it yourself". Since no video is apparent to assist people with this common vehicle, then I which I will share a description video... Hopefully, someone like richpin06, 1A Auto, Chris Fix, you or someone else will decide to take my description to display the entire job.

@@notyourbusiness1850 I actually had a spare steering column for the 04 Impala collecting dust in my garage that I recently disposed of. If I still had it laying around, I'd have been more than happy to oblige you with a video.
Honestly, with all the trouble you seem to be having with the column, it might just be easier to locate a good used column for cheap and swap that in instead. If your car doesn't have steering wheel radio controls, you could find a column with the leather-wrapped wheel & radio controls and give your car a nice upgrade.

Just a heads up for those who don't want to remove anything but ignition. That square shaped hole bottom right of key hole. If you can put a small bend in the end of a small precision screw driver and fit it in there you can typically feel for the release button and pop it to get out the ignition. After much research and consulting my son, he has a repair shop, he downloaded instructions for replacing the cylinder on my 2002 Impala. You don't have to remove the switch or the panel under the steering column. If you insert an allen wrench or a bent rod in the space above the switch you can depress the latch and remove the cylinder. Just remove the dash panel.

    • @CertifiedShadetree
      @CertifiedShadetree  5 років тому +1

I could see that working, except you also need to remove the shifter interlock from the switch in order to get the lock cylinder out. Regardless, keep me posted on how it works out, 'cause if there's a simpler way I don't want to lead anyone down a path of redundancy!!

It came from a repair website they use and had confirmed 26 technician fixes using that method. I'm going to attempt it this week so we will see. I'll update my success. I'm having intermittent security messages and a few failed starts. Now I turn the car to On and wait for the security message before tying to crank it. Usually I just turn the key as soon as I put it in. I guess that gives it more time to sync? Mine only has 64k miles.

Are you getting the SECURITY message every time you go to crank the car? In my experiences, the car would go 3-4 days between Passlock failings. I would go to crank, and then get the message after it failed to crank...

@@CertifiedShadetree Just replaced the Passlock module. 3mm allen wrench will reach the release for the assembly. Just go in at the bottom right hole by switch. Took a few tries to find the right hole. I also removed the radio and re installed it because it quit letting me adjust settings and wanted to be sure connections were good.
Reassembled it, waited on the security indicator to show up and it cranked first try. Next time I will just replace the passlock housing. It's a hall effect sensor and there is a magnet in the tumbler that actuates it. Original tumbler has a retainer and you cant easily take it apart.
New one had to be rekeyed to match my key. Make sure you have key codes before hand. I figured it out but it's tedious. Key for 2002 has no chip according to dealer and Google. Key makers like ACE hardware can verify that.
I bought this replacement from Amazon: ACDelco D1493F GM Original Equipment Ignition Lock Cylinder. No keys come with it but parts to rekey your old key for it did.
Thanks for the tips. I did have to remove the plastic under the steering wheel for access to the screw by the steering column, but not the entire switch assembly. Make sure the car is in 1st gear and the steering lock will disengage. Cheers!

Question: You mentioned removing the radio, so I'll assume you removed the dash trim. Was it necessary to remove the entire dash trim panel or would you be able to slide the lock cylinder out of the hole after removing the little trim ring? Or would it even be possible to squeeze an allen wrench in that narrow opening?

The second one, which is the one I was posting about, would not ever try to crank.

How do you determine if it's the lock cylinder or the ignition switch that's stopping the key, from turning. I've seen several of these videos same symptom , but they replace one or the other but never say how they came to the conclusion.

    • @CertifiedShadetree

Honestly I've never ran into that problem on the Impala, but have on an old S10 Blazer. You really won't know which is binding up until you can separate the lock cylinder from the switch and turn each one separately. And in the Impala's case, you'll likely have to drill the lock out, rendering it useless anyway.

@@mattsimpson398 Just some other things to try: Shift into Neutral and see if it starts. It could be your neutral safety switch (or "gear position sensor") on the transmission that's failing. I've also had issues in the past with old cars that won't crank, and it turned out to be bad battery cables (the cables get so old they aren't able to carry the full current to the starter.) That being said, check the battery cable connections at the underhood fuseboxes as well. The W-Bodys are notorious for those connections loosening over time.
