Monster’s of Moscow… EPIC! It’s definitely worth while listening to the bands talk about the experience. A lot isn’t captured in the clips like Russian soldiers beating the shit out of people.
If I remember correctly, about a month before this concert a group of Soviet hardliners had attempted a coup, trying to wrest control away from Gorbachev. Soviet youth came out in significant numbers to stand against the coup attempt(Gorbachev had been more of a reformer than they wanted). When Gorbachev asked the youth how he could thank them for their help, they asked for Western rock bans to come perform. Metallica was already touring in Eastern Europe at the time, so they were part of the lineup for this concert. The Soviet Union would collapse by the end of that same year.
In the early 1980's, Metallica is one of the few bands still going strong today. Some others disbanded or even retired from touring as another band, Whitesnake with lead singer, David Coverdale forced to retire from touring because health issues. But there are still least bands started in 1960's are still going strong: Rolling Stones (even though they are not metal) and Germany's Scorpions.
